West Newton United Presbyterian Church December 8, 2013 (Second Sunday in Advent)

Leader: A reading from Isaiah 40:1-11 People: In this season of hustle and bustle, we are tempted to get frantic and join the panic to shop our way into the holiday spirit. In this moment, we resist that temptation and choose instead to be at peace with who we are and where we are on this path. We will let this time prepare us, and we will hear God’s call to be those who prepare the world. Leader: On this second Sunday of Advent we choose to be a peaceful presence in this midst of a frantic season. So, today, we light the second candle as an act of preparation and call it Peace.

* Hymn #170 Thou Didst Leave Thy Throne (v1-3&5) * Call to Confession * Prayer of Confession (in unison)

ORDER OF WORSHIP Prelude & Welcome “Minute for Mission” – Pine Springs Camp Passing of the Peace ~ ~ Preparing to hear the Word ~ ~ Call to Worship ~ (responsively) Lighting of the 2nd Advent candle Leader: Advent calls us to prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ. All around us people prepare for parties, dinners and presents. These events could distract us from the real reason for our anticipation. On the other hand, they also could prepare us; they could be the voice crying in a wilderness of materialism: “Prepare the way for the coming of what is really important.” People: Rather than get lost in the wilderness of distractions, we will let the music and the lights make us sensitive to the voice that is even now calling our name. We will listen for the Word in the words and even in the noise.

O Merciful God, in our baptism you promise forgiveness and new life, making us a part of the body of Christ. We confess that we are preoccupied with ourselves, and we are separated from sisters and brothers in Christ. In our sin, we are separated from you. We cling to destructive habits, hold grudges, and show reluctance to welcome one another. We allow the past to hold us hostage. In your loving kindness, have mercy upon us, and free us from sin. Remind us of the promises you make in baptism so that we may rise to new life, and live together in grace. We offer this prayer in the name of the Redeemer who is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Amen

* Assurance of Pardon * Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be; world without end, Amen, Amen.

~ ~ Response to the Word ~ ~ The Apostles’ Creed (in unison) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. AMEN.

Offering * Doxology #382 Prayer of Dedication Prayers of the People The Lord’s Prayer (in unison) Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom and the Power and the Glory, forever. Amen
