West Newton United Presbyterian Church December 1, 2013 First Sunday in Advent

All: As we begin our journey to the light, we confess that our lives have not always been lived in ways pleasing to God. Our shame has left us feeling distant from the One who is both Mother and Father to us all, the One in whose hands we are like clay. Yet even now, our longing for the One who tears open the heavens and comes down kindles like a fire in our soul. Even now as we wait, we dare to hope. Leader: We who are pregnant with anticipation feel hope rise up within us. And so we light this first candle and name it Hope.

* Hymn #168 Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus * Call to Confession * Prayer of Confession (in unison)

ORDER OF WORSHIP Prelude & Welcome Passing of the Peace ~ ~ Preparing to hear the Word ~ ~ Call to Worship ~ (responsively) Lighting of the 1st Advent candle Leader: As our days grow shorter and our nights longer, we who are people of faith turn to symbols such as candles, evergreens, and wreaths, to proclaim our belief in the unquenchable light. In hopeful anticipation, we prepare for the coming of the Reign of God. Listen for the Word in the words of the prophet for the first Sunday of this new church year: All: We open our hearts to the Word in the words. Leader: A reading from Isaiah, Chapter 64, verses 1 to 9

O God our Creator, by whose mercy and might, the world turns safely into the light. Forgive us our sins, when we let the world and our lives live in darkness, and our thoughts become impure. Forgive us when we give into temptation, and we become less than honorable people. We commit to your great love and protection, and we ask for your pardon, in the name of the Risen and Redeeming Christ, we offer our prayers and petitions. Amen.

* Assurance of Pardon * Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be; world without end, Amen, Amen. ~ ~ Hearing of the Word ~ ~ Old Testament Lesson ~ Isaiah 2:1-5 (NRSV) Choir Anthem Emmanuel, Expected Jesus R.E.Schram New Testament Lesson ~ Matthew 24:36-44 (NRSV) Children’s Sermon * Please stand if you are able

* Hymn #166 Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence Sermon “That Hopey Thingee” by Rev. Art Seaman ~ ~ Response to the Word ~ ~ The Apostles’ Creed (in unison) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. AMEN.

Offering * Doxology #382 Prayer of Dedication Prayers of the People The Lord’s Prayer (in unison) Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom and the Power and the Glory, forever. Amen
