Like the other schools in the West London Free School Academy Trust, the Kensington Primary Academy aspires to be one of the best state primaries in the country, renowned for academic excellence and the success of all its pupils, regardless of background or ability. Our aim is not only that every pupil should fulfil their potential, but that they should acquire a storehouse of essential knowledge and develop the necessary skills to thrive in secondary school and beyond.

In 2009, when a small group of West London teachers and parents set out to create a new type of school, we never imagined it would prove so popular that we’d end up opening a fourth seven years later. Yet it turns out that our formula – a classical liberal education, regardless of background or ability – is a big hit with local parents. This year, the West London Free School Secondary received ten applicants for every place, making it the most over-subscribed school in Hammersmith and Fulham.


It means all children start learning a musical instrument in Year 3. It means they all study classical civilisation, beginning with Ancient Greece. It means that as children move up through the school fewer and fewer lessons are taught by general practitioners and more and more by subject specialists – scientists, linguists, historians. We want children to leave our school with a storehouse of factual knowledge and we’ve introduced a new, knowledge-based curriculum to make sure we achieve that. This is the same curriculum we’ve been using at the West London Free School Primary since it opened in 2013 and which has just been rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted. The group behind the Kensington Primary Academy includes many of the same people who helped set up the secondary and the other primaries in our group, such as Jane Emmett, Principal of Fulham Prep School and Kathryn Cooper, a governor at Southfield Primary School and now the Chair of the governing body that sits above our two existing primaries. All four schools are non-selective, co-educational and secular.

The new school will fill up year group by year group until it reaches full capacity in 2022. Each year 30 places will be available in Reception and from 2017 36 in the nursery. The Kensington Primary Academy won’t be to everyone’s taste. Some parents will prefer a less academically rigorous education for their children. But if you do choose it, we’ll do everything in our power to make sure your child can access our knowledge-based curriculum. That means a solid grounding in literacy and numeracy before they move on to the more advanced stuff, such as learning The Lady of Shalott by heart. CURRICULUM AND LEARNING

We will be using an innovative, knowledge-based curriculum developed by the American educationalist ED Hirsch for elementary schools in the United States and adapted for use in English primary schools by the education think tank Civitas. We have worked closely with Civitas to personalise it for our primary schools and, so far, it has proved very successful. Last year, 83% of the pupils at the West London Free School Primary achieved a Good Level of Development at the end of Reception, compared to a national average of 60%.


• Communication and language

In order to deliver our curriculum, we will be operating an extended day from Reception to Year 6, providing an extra 30 minutes a day in the Infant School (Reception to Year 2) and an extra hour a day in the Junior School (Years 3 to 6). Our school days are longer than in a typical state primary, but we think this is the best way to prepare children for life at secondary school.

• Mathematics

The Nursery School

A typical day in Reception involves reading, phonics, English and maths in the morning, and art, drama, French, humanities, music, PSED, PE, religious education and science in the afternoon. By the end of Reception we want our pupils to have achieved a higher-thanaverage attainment level and be ready for their move to Year 1 – just as they do in the West London Free School Primary.

From 2017 the Nursery will teach the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, which helps each child prepare for their future learning. This curriculum, which is statutory, is for practitioners working with children from birth to the age of five. The Infant School Pupils in the Infant School will start at 8.30am and finish at 3.30pm. In Reception, our pupils have a more structured timetable than is commonly found in reception classes, something we believe is necessary to deliver our knowledge-based curriculum. Our Reception pupils will follow the statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage, as well as additional material we have added, to prepare pupils for the transition to Year 1. The Reception curriculum is comprised of seven areas of learning and development:

• Physical development • Personal, social and emotional development (PSED) • English • Understanding the world • Expressive arts and design We provide our pupils with a range of indoor and outdoor learning opportunities that inspire them to develop their communication skills, ignite a love of learning and build their capacity to explore and learn.

From Year 1 onwards, more lessons will be taught by subject specialists, including modern languages, music and PE. Not only will this mean the children are introduced to these subjects by teachers with a good grasp of subject knowledge, it will help prepare them for the Junior School. The idea behind this curriculum is that all children should complete their primary education with a storehouse of general knowledge, along with the skills to use it. We will, of course, use a variety of teaching methods to ensure that we cater for individual learning needs.

The Junior School

Our house system

The school day is extended by a further 30 minutes in the Junior School, with pupils from Years 3 to 6 starting school at 8.30am and finishing at 4.00pm. As the children move up through the school, we aim to develop their self-reliance and selforganisation. More lessons will be taught by subject specialists than in a typical state primary where the majority of lessons are delivered by general practitioners. The following subjects form the basis of the curriculum in the Junior School: art and design, classical civilisation, divinity (RE), English, geography, history (ancient and modern), maths, modern languages, music, PE, philosophy and science.

Every pupil automatically will become a member of one of four houses: Athenians, Corinthians, Olympians and Spartans. Houses are organised vertically and contain pupils from all year groups.

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) The Kensington Primary Academy is fully inclusive and committed to meeting the requirements of pupils with special educational needs. We aim to educate children with special educational needs and disabilities within the classroom and ensure they have access to the whole of the curriculum. Some children may require extra support, whereas others may require extra challenge. Whatever your child’s needs, we want them to reach their full potential at our school. English as an Additional Language (EAL) Our schools serve an ethnically diverse community. As such, we recognise and celebrate linguistic diversity at our schools. This means supporting pupils for whom English is an additional language.

Each house supports a charity and pupils are encouraged to participate in fundraising activities throughout the school year. The house system also enables us to arrange a diverse range of competitions, including sport, music, art and drama. Extra-curricular activities The curriculum will be enhanced by a range of lunchtime and after-school activities that promote creativity and encourage pupils to discover hidden skills and passions. We aim to offer a full programme of extra-curricular clubs, covering activities such as music, sport, chess and reading. These mixed-age activities will enable older pupils to play a mentoring role, enhancing the school’s sense of community. Code of conduct All pupils are expected to observe a strict code of conduct based on courtesy and kindness. We hope that a combination of high expectations, strong discipline and academic rigour will enable all our pupils to reach their potential, regardless of background or ability. We want all pupils to set themselves the highest possible goals and have the confidence to pursue them.


Pupil care is at the heart of the school. Each child has a class teacher assigned to them who is responsible for their welfare, behaviour and academic performance. The high standards expected of pupils apply to dress and appearance, their behaviour in and out of the classroom and manners. Community Parents and carers will be involved in the learning process from the moment their children start at the school and we ask each parent or carer to sign our ‘Home School Agreement’. This involves promising that your child will arrive at school punctually every day, complete all his or her homework in full and on time, adhere to our uniform policy and subscribe to our code of conduct. We also welcome parents and carers who want to volunteer their time to support us in reading with the children, join us on educational outings or help run an extra-curricular club. We hope to have an active and dedicated Parent Teacher Association (PTA), as we do in our other schools.

MUSIC Music is a key part of our school day and is a core aspect of a classical liberal education. Instrumental music lessons are included in the music curriculum from Year 3 and we expect all our pupils to make a serious commitment to their musical education.

SPORT We believe that sport is both a physical and intellectual exercise. Pupils learn the value of teamwork and enjoy competing against each other in games.

Admissions policy The admissions arrangements of the Kensington Primary Academy fully comply with the School Admissions Code and Admissions Law. The school is open to anyone and is non-selective. There are 30 places available in Reception each year, and from 2017 36 in the Nursery. The school will fill up year group by year group until it is at full capacity. Priority will be given to children with statements of Special Educational Needs or Education, Health and Care plans, looked-after children and children who were looked after but ceased to be so because they were adopted (or became subject to a child arrangements, residence or special guardianship order), founders’ children, children who are eligible for the Pupil Premium Grant and children of staff at the school who have been employed for more than two years. However, the lion’s share of places will be allocated according to straight-line distance from the school gate, thereby ensuring the school serves local families. Our Admissions Policy for 2016-17 can be viewed on the school website at www.wlfs-kpa.org/Admissions/ Community space The school site includes excellent facilities for community use. These comprise an 812m2 Multi Use Games and Activities hall with dedicated changing rooms, as well as two 78m2 community rooms, suitable as exercise studios or meeting rooms. These facilities can be accessed via a separate entrance from the school entrance, enabling community groups to use them during the school day. Details of how these spaces can be accessed will be published on our website in due course.
