Delta Gamma Chapter – October 2010

Delta Gamma Chapter Est. 1965 National Leadership Conference. Corre Stegall Winners. Recruitment. New Members. Confidence Coalition. Homecoming. Shenanigans. Bid Day.

Your Story, our History, was the theme for the 2010 Kappa Delta National Leadership Conference held in Williamsburg, VA. Over the summer, 5 Delta Gamma Chapter members traveled to Williamsburg, and discovered that not one, but two of our chapter sisters received The Corre Stegall Leadership award. Previous Treasurer, Laura Leigh Zimmerman and current President Rebecca Gogel have been awarded the highest honor an undergraduate can receive in Kappa Delta. Delta Gamma was the only chapter with two recipients. There were only 10 recipients across the nation. The "Story" of these two leaders will go down as Kappa Delta history, and will be in the forefront of the Delta Gamma Chapter's history for a lifetime. These ladies honorable awards were only the beginning of the recognition that the Delta Gamma chapter earned at NLC. The Chapter was named a 5 Star Chapter, which only the chapters who succeed in all five areas of chapter excellence can receive. The news of these

outstanding accomplishments propelled members to work hard during summer workshops to recruit only the best new members. Vice President of Membership Rachael Feldman, had many fun activities to keep members spirits up before recruitment began. This included a spirit day at the water-park for all sisters, complete with a karaoke competition. By the week of recruitment that number of potential new members reached 421; the largest amount of women participating in recruitment at Western Kentucky University in over 30 years! Of course Kappa Delta got the best girls on campus, once again. The chapter gave 41 women bids and all accepted and bid day themed “New KiDs on the Block,” complete with an inflatable slip and slide. Laura Beth Austin, VP of Member Education, has been very informative and loving to each of our new girls, guiding them in the right direction and helping

each one pledge to be a classy, Kappa Delta lady! The new members chose their pledge class name at the first retreat and will be known as the KaDet pledge class. Each week since bid day, each new member has been paired with an active member to get to know the chapter and the

Big Sister - Little sister Candlelight 2010! active members. This was not only a way for new members to meet different women in the chapter but also help both new and old girls to find their big/little sister. On October 13 Kappa Delta will host their first

philanthropy event of the year, Shenanigans. This year’s event will be held at the newly renovated Van Meter Auditorium at p.m. The KaDets will be formally introduced during shenanigans as they dance to their own choreographed pledge class dance. The Delta Gamma Chapter celebrated International Women’s Friendship month during September hosting two very successful events. The first event, the “You Make Me Smile” campaign was held September 27 outside of Downing University Center. Sisters passed out balloons promoting the Confidence Coalition and a campus wide sisterhood event to be held later in the week. Each balloon had confident phrases written on them like, “Smile, you’re beautiful,” or “You CAN achieve your dreams.” The event was a big hit on campus with over 400 balloons given to female students, faculty and staff. The “You Make Me Smile” campaign was followed by celebration open to all campus women for International Women’s Friendship Month. The event was held at the Kappa Delta house in the chapter room. Over 70 women showed up to the event. The evening was started off with a presentation of the Confidence Coalition meant to inspire all women in attendance to “Go Confidently.” The events speaker was Delta Gamma Chapter Alum Diane Derosa-Renyolds! The 2010 Pledge Class will be initiated into the chapter on

Saturday October 17 at 5p.m. The chapter is very excited to welcome all 41 pledges into the chapter and will be celebrating White Rose week the full week leading up to initiation. This year, Kappa Delta is paired up with Farmhouse fraternity and FIJI fraternity for homecoming. The “Thrill on the Hill” themed week will host events starting on Monday, October 25th through Saturday, October 30th. On Saturday, the chapter

will hold it’s annual Homecoming event at the Kappa Delta house, welcoming all alumnae with a breakfast the Saturday morning of the Homecoming game! We would love to have as many alumnae come out and visit and remember that there will be free parking in the Kappa Delta house lot!
