QUE STI ONS

PATRICK WALSH MUHS President Candidate

If you could found your own city, where would it be, what would you name it, and why?

What latin or greek textbook do you use, and what is your favorite story from it so far?

If I could found my own city, I would model it exactly like Ancient Rome, but I’d call it Reme to honor Remus, the obviously superior brother.

At MUHS, we use Cambridge Latin textbooks, and my favorite story from the series so far would have to be the epic battle between the Pompeians and Nucerians in Stage 8 because “Nucerini sunt stulti.”

What is your favorite latin or greek word and why?

My favorite Latin word would of course be “ecce!” (look) after the criticallyacclaimed high school Latin textbook Ecce Romani.

How many quarters do you think would fit in the Trojan Horse?

I would say at least four quarters could fit in the Trojan Horse. Maybe five if you really pack them in.

Pineapple on pizza? Explain.

Pineapple on pizza is a perfect combination of sweet and salty, and everyone needs to stop hating on it.

5

SAVANNA KACZYNSKI DSHA 1st Vice President Candidate

If you could found your own city, where would it be, what would you name it, and why?

What latin or greek textbook do you use, and what is your favorite story from it so far?

Considering I already share my name with a city in Georgia, I would make another city named Savanna right next to Savannah, GA.

Ecce Romani! My favorite story from there definitely has to be when the Cornelii got the raeda in fossa!

What is your favorite latin or greek word and why?

My favorite Latin word is quamquam. It is my favorite. It is just really fun to say. Pineapple on pizza? Explain.

No, pineapple should not be on pizza. I think a classic pizza is the best way to go, I also do not understand how the pineapple tastes good with the tomato sauce.

6

How many quarters do you think would fit in the Trojan Horse?

I think that 50,873,235 quarters would fit in the Trojan Horse.

MACKENZIE LAWLESS Homestead 1st Vice President Candidate

If you could found your own city, where would it be, what would you name it, and why?

What latin or greek textbook do you use, and what is your favorite story from it so far?

If I could, I would colonize my city on Mars since life there is a possibility and it would be a whole new world, distant from the negative influences of the planet Earth that we all know. I would name this city Jove since, in Roman mythology, Jove is the father of Mars and arguably the greatest god. This way, my city would be destined for heroism. What is your favorite latin or greek word and why?

We use the Cambridge Latin Course textbook and my favorite story is by far “Belimicus ultor” from book II Stage 16. In this story, Belimicus is upset about the outcome of the boat race, so he brings a bear into King Cogidubnus’s palace. I won't spoil the rest, but I love the unexpected twists and turns and ultimately the ending involving the King, Quintus, and the fate of Belimicus. This story was definitely the peak of Latin literature so far.

My favorite Latin word is eripere which means to snatch away.

How many quarters do you think would fit in the Trojan Horse?

Pineapple on pizza? Explain.

An absolute must. The sweet taste of the pineapple mixed with the savory taste of pizza sauce makes for an unforgettable flavor. Ham and pineapple pizza is unarguably the best combination that exists.

1,654,565 quarters based on a mere approximation of the volume of the Trojan Horse and the surface area of a quarter.

7

MATINA NAUM DSHA 2nd Vice President Candidate

If you could found your own city, where would it be, what would you name it, and why?

What latin or greek textbook do you use, and what is your favorite story from it so far?

I would want my city to be located on the Amalfi Coast in Italy because it is absolutely beautiful there. Plus, it’s only like an hour away from the Pompeii ruins. I’d name my city after some kind of staple of the area for which I would want it to be known.

At DSHA, we use Ecce Romani, and I love Cicero’s “The Value of Friendship” in chapter 63. He writes ornately, so it’s slightly frustrating to translate, but the meaning behind it is endearing and true.

What is your favorite latin or greek word and why?

My favorite latin word is probably facio because when I learned it in Latin 1, my teacher said the entire dictionary entry (facio, facere, feci, factus) really fast like ten times while looking at everyone dead in the eyes. It was so awkwardly uncomfortable that thinking about it now makes me laugh. Pineapple on pizza? Explain.

8

For me, there’s not enough money in the world to make me do that. The idea makes me sick. But if you like it then you do you I guess.

How many quarters do you think would fit in the Trojan Horse?

Well they say about 40 men were inside of the trojan horse, and I think men of that time were shorter than they are today. I would guess that 110,000 quarters would take up the same space as a man of that time, so 110,000 x 40 = 4,400,000. I guess about 4,400,000 quarters would fit in the Trojan Horse.

OLIVIA PATEL Homestead 2nd Vice President Candidate

If you could found your own city, where would it be, what would you name it, and why?

What latin or greek textbook do you use, and what is your favorite story from it so far?

I would be the founder of a city in the Caribbean because it is a very popular tourist destination, so my city, titled LiviLand, would receive lots of visitors. It would be named LiviLand so people know just who founded this amazing city.

My school uses the Cambridge Latin textbook, and the story my class refers back to most often is the first story we ever read, titled Cerberus. The first line read: “Caecilius est in hortō”, which translates to Caecilius is in the garden. This story from the first stage is definitely my favorite because it marked the start of the long journey following Caecilius’s life, right up until he unfortunately died when Mt. Vesuvius erupted….

What is your favorite latin or greek word and why?

My favorite Latin word, or phrase, is definitely Carpe Diem, translating to “seize the day”, because of the sole fact that my mom says it to me so often. Starting my day with a solid Carpe Diem everyday really inspires me to take full advantage of the day.

How many quarters do you think would fit in the Trojan Horse?

930,382,002.

Pineapple on pizza? Explain.

2

Absolutely. The sweet pineapple flavor with the smoky sausage taste is totally irreplaceable. It is definitely on my list of the top 5 greatest pizza toppings of all time.

9

ILIA MIKHAILENKO Homestead Parliamentarian Candidate

If you could found your own city, where would it be, what would you name it, and why?

What latin or greek textbook do you use, and what is your favorite story from it so far?

If I could found a city, I would first save Remus from being killed by Romulus, then found a city named Reme right next to Rome and give it to Remus. I would primarily do this because everybody deserves a second chance, but also because it would be super interesting and entertaining to watch Romulus and Remus interact as each brother tries to establish a better city.

At Homestead, we use the Cambridge Latin textbook and my favorite story is any that has Grumio in it.

What is your favorite latin or greek word and why?

My favorite Latin word is Volubilis. It's technically not a word, but rather the name of one of the characters in our textbook. Still, I think it sounds very dope. Pineapple on pizza? Explain.

Definitely. Pizza has this versatile ability to make anything edible taste good.

10

How many quarters do you think would fit in the Trojan Horse?

Let's just say that if the Greeks actually decided to stuff the Trojan Horse with quarters, they would have emptied their treasury in the process and lost the war.

RONIT GUPTA BA Secretary Candidate

If you could found your own city, where would it be, what would you name it, and why?

What latin or greek textbook do you use, and what is your favorite story from it so far?

I would go to Mars with Elon Musk and found the first settlement there. I would name it Musk Metropolis in honor of Elon.

I have used Ecce Romani in the past, and my favorite story was when the carriage fell into the ditch.

What is your favorite latin or greek word and why?

My favorite Latin word is “fossa”, because everytime I hear it I am reminded of Ecce Romani. Pineapple on pizza? Explain.

Putting pineapple on pizza is a crime. It is not traditional, and it ruins the identity of pizza. Gordon Ramsay, arguably the most accomplished and skilled chef in the world, when asked about pineapple on pizza, said, “You don’t put pineapple on pizza.” I believe we should follow this culinary trailblazer’s advice.

How many quarters do you think would fit in the Trojan Horse?

I estimate 55 cubic meters of hollow space inside the horse; converting cubic meters to cubic millimeters I arrive at the conclusion that there are 55,788,570,000 cubic millimeters of available space. Dividing this by a conversion unit of (1 quarter)/(808.53 cubic millimeters), I calculate that approximately 69,000,000 quarters would fit inside the structure.

11

TEGBIR CHAWLA BA Treasurer Candidate

If you could found your own city, where would it be, what would you name it, and why?

What latin or greek textbook do you use, and what is your favorite story from it so far?

If I could found my own city, I would have it be located in New York and name it Monke Ville because monkeys are my favorite animal. The only residents there would be monkeys.

I have been a scholar of Ecce Romani 1 and 2 as well as Fabulae Faciles and textbooks on Vergil and Caesar. My favorite story is when the Cornelii and their carriage fall into a ditch in Ecce Romani.

What is your favorite latin or greek word and why?

My favorite Latin word is periculum because I live life dangerously.

Pineapple on pizza? Explain.

Yes to pineapple on pizza. Haters say this sounds disgusting but a true fan of fine cuisine would realize how the acidity and sweetness balance out the savory, tangy sauce and cheese, providing a delectable experience.

12

How many quarters do you think would fit in the Trojan Horse?

Although the exact dimensions of the Trojan horse are somewhat ambiguous, if it was enough to hold a sizable portion of the Greek army with full armor and weapons, I would estimate that at least 420,000 quarters would fit inside of it.

SONIA ZACHARIAS Homestead Historian Candidate

If you could found your own city, where would it be, what would you name it, and why?

What latin or greek textbook do you use, and what is your favorite story from it so far?

If I could found my own city I would name it Sontroplis or just plain Sonia. I would want my city to be somewhere near Venice, Italy because of how beautiful that area is. I would love to spend some time there and explore my city.

We use Cambridge at Homestead and most of my favorite stories were from the first book which we used in latin 1. I think the last story of that book is my overall favorite so far because of how suspenseful it became between Quintus and Caecilius after Vesiuvius erupted. It peaked my interest and got me ready to learn more.

What is your favorite latin or greek word and why?

Vivamus is one of my favorite latin words since it is one of the first words I learned in latin and because of how it is simple but used often.

How many quarters do you think would fit in the Trojan Horse?

I would say around 10 million considering how massive the Trojan Horse was.

Pineapple on pizza? Explain.

I think pineapple on pizza is a really good combination because the pineapple brings sweetness to the savory; plus the pineapple is refreshing.

13

VISHRUT AGRAWAL BA TechCo Candidate

If you could found your own city, where would it be, what would you name it, and why?

I would make an underwater city called Nautus, derived from nautical, a word that is related to the sea. Underwater cities have always interested me ever since I watched Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. The underwater city of the Gungans looks quite fascinating, and I would love to have a city just like that. What is your favorite latin or greek word and why?

My favorite Greek/Latin word is definitely fossa, meaning ditch. This word is quite memorable from Ecce Romani, the latin textbook we read back in middle school. This was quite the turning point in the adventure of Marcus and Sextus, as they were stuck in the ditch for a very very long 10 chapters. Pineapple on pizza? Explain.

Pineapple belongs on pizza. The savoriness of the pizza is very nicely complemented by the sweetness of the pineapple. The polar opposites of the sweet pineapple and the rest of the salty pizza are meant to be.

14

What latin or greek textbook do you use, and what is your favorite story from it so far?

My favorite story from my latin career has to be from Ecce Romani. Chapter 13 opens with the Cornelius family traveling along the Appian Way. Marcus and Sextus are watching different vehicles and bickering about the differences between them. But, near the end, the iconic phrase “Cave Fossam! Cave Fossam! are uttered as Syrus, the driver of the carriage, avoids a terrible accident and falls into the ditch. How many quarters do you think would fit in the Trojan Horse?

After immense calculations, I have concluded that 126 million quarters will fit into the Trojan Horse. Knowing about 40 warriors were in it, it can be assumed that there was enough space for the volume of about 175 warriors, because of the height of the Trojan horse compared to the height of a warrior and the space between warriors. If each warrior is about 6 feet, they will measure 2 by 2 by 6 feet approximately. There are about 30,000 quarters that will fit in a cubic foot. So in conclusion, 30,000 times 24 times 175 will result in 126 million quarters.

EMMA CANGA BA Editor Candidate

If you could found your own city, where would it be, what would you name it, and why?

What latin or greek textbook do you use, and what is your favorite story from it so far?

If I could found my own city it would have to be in Iceland. I've never been there, but I know that the landscape and nature are absolutely stunning. I think it would be really nice to have a city near a fjord. My city would be called Em, short and sweet.

Right now we are reading Caesar, but the past three/four years we have used Ecce Romani. Of course my favorite stories are from those chapters in the iconic ditch. My latin teacher back then warned us the day we translated the fall that we would be there for a while. One may have expected to get bored after so many chapters, but Ecce managed to make it quite entertaining.

What is your favorite latin or greek word and why?

Compotato. It means a “drinking party” according to my Roman culture study guide, but the reason this is my favorite word is because it has the word “potato” in it and it’s fun to say. Pineapple on pizza? Explain.

There are many combinations of food that I can tolerate, but this is unfortunately not one of them. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love pineapple and love pizza, but the mixture of the fruit juice and the tomato sauce just doesn’t work for me.

How many quarters do you think would fit in the Trojan Horse?

A quarter's volume is 8.0853e-7 m2. I haven’t studied myth that much, but I think there were 40 soldiers in the horse. The average male soldier weighed around 260 lbs. with armor so the total volume of the soldiers would be around 10.56 m3 with a body density of 985 kg/m3. There was probably some extra space for movement so considering that I would say 15,534,365 quarters.

NIELS ARMBRUSTER BA WJCL President

Is a hotdog a sandwich?

I would have to say a hotdog is not a sandwich because it is not two different pieces of bread. The bread is not completely sliced through, so it is not a sandwich. What is your most useless talent?

Waking up every morning 3 minutes before my alarm goes off.

Who would play you in a play or movie about your life and why?

According to some website, Niall Horan looks the most like me, so I guess him (I don't see it).

What will you miss most about the WJCL?

What I'll miss most about the WJCL is very surprisingly the board meetings. They have unfortunately not been the same over Zoom, but we all used to go out for lunch afterwards, and they provided a nice way to keep in touch with friends from all over the state. When I've graduated, I will miss having the opportunity to see people from Mequon, Brookfield, and Madison all in one day. After all your years in the WJCL, what does the W stand for for you?

Wisconsin. Why would it change?

17

CAMILLE

DESLONGCHAMPS DSHA WJCL 2nd VP

Is a hotdog a sandwich?

I think I'm gonna say that a hot dog isn't a sandwich. Why are we forcing hot dogs to conform to the idea of what a sandwich is when we can just say that a hotdog is a hotdog is a hotdog?

What is your most useless talent?

My Yogi Bear impression...but you guys already know about that ahahahaha.

Who would play you in a play or movie about your life and why?

I asked my siblings this question, and I got answers ranging from Saiorse Ronan to Will Farrell (so I guess there's no consensus), but I think it would be the girl who played Maeby in Arrested Development because she is the only actress I've seen with freckles like mine.

18

What will you miss most about the WJCL?

I will miss spirit during GAs--the adrenaline I get from those 15 minutes carries me through the whole rest of the weekend!!

After all your years in the WJCL, what does the W stand for for you?

The W stands for "Win, win, win, no matter what."

BEN LORENZ Homestead WJCL Parliamentarian

Is a hotdog a sandwich?

Yes. A guy on Instagram told me so.

What will you miss most about the WJCL?

Blowing bubble rings, a talent which I have somewhat refined over my many years as a swimmer.

By far the people. I have made some of my greatest friends as a member of the WJCL, and I hope that the bonds I have formed during my past four year as a member of this great organization will continue long into my college years and later life.

Who would play you in a play or movie about your life and why?

After all your years in the WJCL, what does the W stand for for you?

Brad Pitt, because he is a great actor, and also because I would love to have had a role in an Ocean's Eleven style heist. Don't quote me on that.

During my first National convention (at Miami University in Ohio), I learned in spectacular fashion that the W in WJCL stands for "Winning at Ludi."

What is your most useless talent?

19

EDDIE KUSTNER BA WJCL Secretary

Is a hotdog a sandwich? A hot dog is a sandwich by technical definition only; the meat of a hot dog is not simply another filling or topping like peanut butter or mayonnaise, as it creates an assemblage that is not merely a sum of its parts but an entirely new being altogether that must not be conflated with any other being. Dictionary definitions are notorious for being nitpicky and confusing generalizations that fall desperately short of truly capturing reality. By attempting to shoehorn complex concepts into is-or-isnot’s, the entire process of definition is doomed to fail from the start. By diluting the essence of a “sandwich” to two short absolutes, the dictionary definition of a sandwich simply does not help tackle the problem faced here. A hot dog meets all the terms that constitute a sandwich, and yet it still holds within itself some unavoidable difference that demands a separate categorization. Thus, it must be concluded that the essence of hot dogs ought not to be categorized by standards and stipulations; they must be answered by each person for himself. Therefore, the almost mathematical question “Is a hot dog a sandwich,” can not be definitively answered by any one person even though all dictionary definitions have failed society up

20

to today. Rather than aligning with hard yes’s and no’s, society must allow for a third option; a hot dog is nothing but itself, an uncharacterizable enigma created by man and yet still foreign to the minds of culinary thinkers, yesterday and forever.

What is your most useless talent?

Calculus. Who would play you in a play or movie about your life and why?

Adam Driver, because he is a handsome man and I'd be honored to have him play me. What will you miss most about the WJCL?

Joking and partying with people from other schools I'd never met before. After all your years in the WJCL, what does the W stand for for you?

Why is the DJ playing "Party in the USA" for the fifth time tonight?

NOAH ABUHAJIR BA WJCL Treasurer

Is a hotdog a sandwich?

The main argument against a hotdog being a sandwich that I have seen revolves around the bun not being split and to that a point to subs which are literally known as sub sandwiches. I would also say that if I put hot dogs between two pieces of bread, I would have a sandwich. With both of these together, I would say that yes, a hotdog is a sandwich despite the fact that it seems wrong. What is your most useless talent?

I can break bricks. I am a martial artist, and while some people just break boards, I break stacks of bricks. While some people say that this is a useful talent, being able to hit stuff hard might be useful, but the specific technique to hit bricks without breaking my arm is a very, very specific talent which will never be useful outside of talent shows.

Who would play you in a play or movie about your life and why?

Three uncoordinated kids in a trenchcoat who never know what is going on because I can relate with that. What will you miss most about the WJCL?

Meeting new people at Convention. I would say something like "friends," but the friends I have made aren't going away, and neither is my love for the classics, but what I will be missing out on are Convention Activities and the ability to meet new friends at Convention. After all your years in the WJCL, what does the W stand for for you?

The "W" in WJCL stands for "Wisconsin" to me. If you want a real answer to the question, as Wisconsin, we are pretty great, so the "W" is for the "W" we take in Ludi every year at Nats.
