HOPE JUDGE Do not go through these years silent. Leave your legacy, whether that be on board, in certamen, or on the dance floor.

CALEB SAFFOLD WJCL, continue to take latin beyond the texts and the classrooms. The more we can use latin as a catalyst to share our talents and create lasting memories, the stronger we will be as a whole. Everything else will fall into place.

Go out and meet new people. What makes the WJCL is the amazing community latin nerds can foster. And most importantly... HAVE FUN!

BEN LORENZ In certamen, it is important to buzz before the other team.

NIELS ARMBRUSTER The most important advice I'd give is to talk to people from different schools instead of just hanging out with the people from your school. It definitely makes convention much more interesting and you can make a bunch of great friends on the way!

KYLE JAIN Convention can be quite chaotic, and in the midst of this chaos, us convention goers often forget to commemorate the amazing weekend. Take pictures! If I have one regret, it is that I did not take more pictures with friends during my years at convention.

BELLA CICERO Some words of wisdom I can pass on (well, as much wisdom as a 17 year old can have), enjoy the things you love to do. Prioritize them, and don’t get swept away with doing what you think you should be. Rather, do what fulfills you. For me, one of the most rewarding parts of high school has been my involvement the WJCL. If it’s yours as well, stick to that!

REENA SINGHAL Try EVERYTHING! I started off in the WJCL as a Certamen player and as far as I knew that was all I was ever going to be, but after leaving Certamen due to time constraints my freshman year I was able to explore so many more parts of the JCL. So get out there and do art, meet new people, run for office, or perform! Just have fun!

CORRINA CALLAHAN My advice for the WJCL is don't be afraid to reach out and make friends from other schools and states, because great and longlasting friendships can form at convention if you venture out from your own delegation.

President at Brookfield Academy. All of this experience has taught me how to communicate effectively, a skill critical to the office of President. Tell us a little more about yourself, what interests do you have outside of Latin?

Besides Latin, I play soccer and tennis for my school. I am also in Mock Trial and Student Council. What would you plan to contribute to the WJCL if you were in the office you are running for?

If I am elected, I hope to create a chapter registry with contact information for officers at each school. I believe that this will allow state officers to easily reach out to students that hold the same position as them and increase communication. In addition, I plan on communicating with the President's of clubs whose membership is declining so that we create a plan to keep them involved. If you could have any movie or tv series get a modern-day remake, which would you choose and why?

I’d like to see a remake of Chicken Little, or a sequel. I thought it was a great movie and that the story deserves another movie. If you could be transported to any time and place in Classical history for 24 hours, where and when would you go and what would you do?

I’d go to see the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD. I think it would be interesting to see how everyone reacted to the eruption, especially Pilny. If you could have dinner with any Classical person (mythological or real), who would it be and why?

Helen of Troy. I don’t really think it needs an explanation.

What are your qualifications for this position?

I am very enthusiastic about the JCL, and I am excited to have the opportunity to share my passion with others. I have attended two national conventions and one state convention, which has allowed me to become familiar with how the organization and board function. I plan to use my writing skills to engage with potential members about what makes the WJCL so special. Tell us a little more about yourself, what interests do you have outside of Latin?

I am very interested in studying foreign languages and learning about their classical origins. In addition to Latin, I take Spanish, and the skills I have gained from studying Latin make learning Spanish much easier. Also, I love to travel and learn about other cultures. Finally, I am a member of my school’s Science Olympiad team, and I compete in various events including epidemiology, protein modeling, and horticulture. What would you plan to contribute to the WJCL if you were in the office you are running for?

As the 1st Vice President, I will work to improve communication with chapters by publishing frequent updates about each board member’s accomplishments. I will engage with smaller chapters to work to increase their delegations to convention. Also, I plan to create promotional materials that showcase the WJCL for distribution to potential chapters. What is your secret talent?

I was a competitive gymnast for ten years, so I am very flexible and I can do a backflip. If you could be transported to any time and place in Classical history for 24 hours, where and when would you go and what would you do?

I would be transported to Rome during the Republic to witness how the government functioned. I would be interested to see the Senate in action because its structure formed the basis of our modern government. Is there anything else you would like to add?

The decrease in membership in the JCL has been a major problem in recent years. As the 1st Vice President, I will work hard to grow the WJCL through effective communication with current and potential members. I am committed to the WJCL’s mission, and I believe that I can make a difference.

FOR THE OFFICE OF PARLIAMENTARIAN: BEN LORENZ

What position are you running for and

What position are you running for

why did you decide to run for it?

and why did you decide to run for

Before state convention my freshman year, I truly knew nothing about the WJCL. Shortly after arriving, however, I learned about the officers and their positions. When the words "spirit and service" were uttered, a lightbulb flashed in my head, signaling, "Camille!! This is you!!" Not only because I love spirit and everything associated with it (excepting the sore throats), but also because my family and my education have instilled in me the importance of service. So I'm running for 2nd VP because I want the opportunity to share with others the joy that spirit and service have given my life.

it?

What are your qualifications for this position?

Helping Arushi as much as possible during Nationals, serving two years on the School Pride commission of my student council, doing service at St. Anne's Salvatorian Campus Nursing Home consistently, and being on the spirit team for State Latin Conventions three years in a row has prepared me well for the 2nd VP position specifically. Other qualifications include Club Coordinator for Respect Life Club at DSHA, being a leading member of the Midwest "Giovane Studentessa" (Student Youth), and studying abroad for the first semester of this year, giving me a sense of responsibility, independence, and confidence needed for this position. Tell us a little more about yourself, what interests do you have outside of Latin?

I love language, in all aspects. I'm super passionate about learning to speak other languages--right now I'm learning Italian--but I also love to read (my favorite books are "Pride and Prejudice" and "O Pioneers!") and write poetry. I also love to find funny, slightly odd things to do with my close friends, like create scavenger hunts and start tortellini businesses. What would you plan to contribute to the WJCL if you were in the office

I'm running for Parliamentarian. I chose this position because I have served in this position for the past year and gained a lot of experience, and I've found that I really enjoy it. What are your qualifications for this position?

I am the current WJCL Parliamentarian, and as such I've had the opportunity to both learn a lot about the duties of the Parliamentarian and help collaborate with the rest of the board. Tell us a little more about yourself, what interests do you have outside of Latin?

The main activity that I do outside of Latin is swimming, and a lot of it. It takes up most of the year for me, and it has led to a lot of amazing experiences and opportunities (much like the JCL). What would you plan to contribute to the WJCL if you were in the office you are running for?

I'd like to focus on candidate recruitment if I am elected by developing a guide for/invitation to candidacy that would be distributed to local chapters come election season next year. In addition to this, I'd like to work with the rest of the board to help streamline communications between the State board and local boards, which could allow the Parliamentarian to more effectively reach out to local chapters in order to better advertise the student government opportunities that the WJCL presents.

you are running for?

If you could have any movie or tv series get a modern-day remake,

I would like to make spirit and service a more interactive part of the WJCL, getting more suggestions from people who might not even go to meetings. In my opinion, it's essential that people be motivated for both spirit and service. Ways I would increase excitement and involvement would be having clubs who do well during service in the first couple months choose the charity for the next couple months, creating a "voter's choice award" during state, taking requests for spirit themes through a google form before and organizational meetings, and making the service during the year more hands-on and personal. If you could have any movie or tv series get a modern-day remake, which

which would you choose and why?

real), who would it be and why?

I don't believe in modern-day remakes of old TV shows. Gilmore Girls? Fantastic show; 10/10. Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life? An abomination; destroyed me. Arrested Development seasons 1-4? Hilarious; makes me one happy camper. Arrested Development season 5? No words for it; should be removed. Full House and Fuller House: same story. 90210? I've never actually watched it but I've heard bad things. The only show I would allow a reboot of is Good Luck Charlie, but they're on thin ice. What is your secret talent?

I, Claudius. Dwayne Johnson as Sejanus could be interesting. If you could be transported to any time and place in Classical history for 24 hours, where and when would you go and what would you do?

Probably Sulmo, Italy at around 7 AD. It would be pretty cool if I could help Ovid write the Metamorphoses (and it would be pretty useful for Certamen). If you could have dinner with any Classical person (mythological or

King Tellus of Athens. According to Herodotus, he was the happiest man in the world, and it would be awesome to get to know how he got there.

I can do an absolutely spot-on Yogi Bear (the cartoon bear who lived in Jellystone Park and always wanted to bust out but would get caught by the ranger) impression. If you mention it to me I may be able to give you a sample :) If you could have dinner with any Classical person (mythological or real), who would it be and why?

For sure Flavia and Cornelia from Ecce Romani because I feel like we would be besties--I, too, get super emotional when I have to leave my friends because my dad has been summoned by the emperor. I also feel like we could have an awesome time exchanging the gossip about Quintus Valerius (what a dreamboat) and how annoying Sextus is. Page 6

FOR THE OFFICE OF TREASURER: TRISHA NANDAKUWAR

What position are you running for

What position are you running for

and why did you decide to run for

and why did you decide to run for

it?

it?

This year, I’m running for the position of WJCL Secretary. I’ve decided to run for it because the WJCL has made Latin alive for me in a way that not many translations or vocab quizzes ever have. I was able to appreciate the life given to it by the hundreds of Convention attendees I see here every year, and so I was given a new perspective and respect for the Latin language. I’ve been given these experiences for two years, and now I think it’s about time I gave back.

I chose treasurer because I thought it

What are your qualifications for this position? When it comes to the pure performance aspect of this position, I believe I’m properly qualified. I have participated in writing competitions statewide, nationally, and internationally. The quality of work expected of me is not anything new to me. I’m also currently the President of the Junior Class at Brookfield Academy. In this position, I’ve embraced the work ethic, organization, and cooperation required in order to work for someone other than yourself (in both cases a large body of students.) I know that being elected doesn’t mean that it’s about you all of a sudden. It means you’re representing and working for countless people other than yourself, so you’d better check your selfishness at the door. Tell us a little more about yourself, what interests do you have outside of Latin? When it comes to sports, I play soccer in the fall and run track in the spring. In between, I work in the weight room and on the track to train for these sports. Doing this kind of regular training has helped me to appreciate the value of everyday tasks and duties when you’re trying to achieve a certain goal. I also listen to music. A lot of music. Observing the types of music I’m drawn to has actually helped me discover more about myself, my personality or otherwise. When you’ve got time, I’d recommend you take a look at your playlists, and see what they might say about you. When you’re sad, do you listen to even sadder music or do you try to cheer yourself up? When you’re cruising late in the night, do you just like vibing or are you going to blow your car speakers out? Only you might know the answers to that. Give it a try. What would you plan to contribute to the WJCL if you were in the office you are running for? If elected I plan on doing the job expected of me, and doing it well. It’s really not a glamorous position, and I’m totally fine with that. I like it better that way. In my opinion, the current responsibilities of Secretary all are pretty reasonable and appropriate. But if it is beneficial in any way to the WJCL that I should adopt more responsibilities, then I won’t hesitate to do so. What is your secret talent? Introducing you to your next favorite song. If you could be transported to any time and place in Classical history for 24 hours, where and when would you go and what would you do? I’d go back to Ancient Greece and personally prevent Pythagoras from inventing his stupid theorem so that I wouldn’t have to study calculus 2,500 years later. If you could have dinner with any Classical person (mythological or real), who would it be and why? Aristotle. I just know we’d hit it off right away. He’d show me how to pinpoint human behavior to a science, and I’d show him what grapefruit-flavored carbonated water is. He’d ask me if all religion is a human construct and therefore inconsequential, and then I’d ask him what Obama’s last name is. He’d teach me how to tell the time from the stars, and I’d teach him how your breath is cold when you go hoo and warm when you go haa. We’d be a match made in heaven, and you can’t tell me otherwise.

would be a great way to become more involved with the WJCL at a deeper level. What are your qualifications for this position?

I am the BC Chapter's treasurer as well as the treasurer for the club She's the First at school. Tell us a little more about yourself, what interests do you have outside of Latin?

I am on the swim team, I take play violin and I'm in MYSO, I am the founder/president of my school's new March for Our Lives chapter, and I lifeguard at the local pool in the summer. What would you plan to contribute to the WJCL if you were in the office you are running for?

I would probably help organize fundraisers that all local chapters can partake in to help bring more delegates to convention. If you could have any movie or tv series get a modern-day remake, which would you choose and why?

The princess bride, because it's one of my all time favorites and I was really sad when it got taken off of netflix so a new one could be really cool! If you were hosting a Colloquia, what topic would you pick to speak about?

Probably the environment because it's such a pressing topic and it's really relevant especially with the bushfires in Australia. If you could have dinner with any Classical person (mythological or real), who would it be and why?

Odysseus (Ulysses) because he was known for his wit rather than just strength and he was still one of the most famous classic characters.

If elected Treasurer, I plan to fulfill the duties of treasurer by contributing new ideas for fundraising in an effort to bring more money into the WJCL through selling Ludi merchandise. In order to sell more merchandise, I plan to make a Ludi gear promotion video that would be posted on the WJCL website, as well as the WJCL social media accounts. The promotion video could involve collaborative effort through help from other officers, especially the historian and the tech coordinator. I believe this will help get the word out about Ludi

for the next treasurer to interpret. I would like to include lots of student art and posters, etc. at the bonanza and add an online store to the WJCL website where member-designed posters can be sold to raise money. What is your secret talent?

Secretly, I'm really good at origami. If you could be transported to any time and place in Classical history for 24 hours, where and when would you go and what would you do?

If I could go to any moment in classical history, I would go to 509 BC to watch Lucius Brutus make his "overthrow Tarquinius Superbus, end the

I could only watch, it would be amazing to observe the original Olympic athletes compete in chariot racing, boxing, pankration, and other events that set the foundation for the Olympic games still beloved for so many years after. If you were hosting a Colloquia, what topic would you pick to speak about?

If I were hosting a Colloquia, I would speak about Roman temples and monuments to the gods. I am very interested in their ancient mythology and the many uses each temple had in Roman culture. I marvel at the structures’ various architectural forms of Roman temples for honoring the gods and goddesses and the impact they had on modern architecture. If you could have dinner with any Classical person (mythological or real), who would it be and why?

I would probably want to have dinner with Hercules. Because of the 12 labors, his story interests me more than any other myth. I’d also choose Hercules because he is a demi-god. I would ask him about the power of his strength and his struggle in completing his labors while still relating to human life as well.

One secret talent I have is that I can make my tongue roll into a clover shape. Super cool, I know. If you could be transported to any time and place in Classical history for 24 hours, where and when would you go and what would you do?

I would transport myself to 79 AD, when Mt. Vesuvius erupted, because I would get a first hand perspective of the historic events, and I would be able to see what old Pompeii looked like before the eruption. If you could have dinner with any Classical person (mythological or real), who would it be and why?

I would have dinner with Cronos because I would ask him how his children tasted and why he ate them. But in all seriousness, I would ask him how life was like before the gods came into power, and why he ruled the world the way he did for power.

Page 9

FOR THE OFFICE OF EDITOR: EMMA CANGA What position are you running for and why did you decide to run for it? I am running for the position of WJCL Editor. Recently, I have been working on my chapter’s publication and have been having a lot of fun editing and designing it as well as writing articles for several other JCL publications. When I started editing, I quickly gained interest and truly enjoyed the job. For me, it is one of those activities that I can spend hours on and one that I often find myself invested in when I have free time. I think it is important to spend time doing work that you both enjoy and can contribute positively to; and so, I would love to have the opportunity to do so for the WJCL through the Editor position. What are your qualifications for this position? As of last year, I have worked with another BAJCL officer on our school’s publication, The Quinque Stellae, a publication that is similar to the Torch: WI but on a local level. Through this, I have gained experience in editing and designing and have become familiar with editing programs such as Canva. In addition, I have written many articles for The Quinque Stellae as well as a few for the Torch: WI. Plus, not long ago, I even had the opportunity to write an article on the Yale Certamen Tournament for the Torch: US. With my experience, I strongly believe I am fully qualified to uphold the role of WJCL Editor. Tell us a little more about yourself, what interests do you have outside of Latin? During the school year, I spend a lot of my time studying but I am also involved in other activities and sports in and out of school besides latin. At school, I am a part of the mock trial team and in the spring, the softball team. Plus, throughout the year, I like to go climbing at Adventure Rock as a part of climb club. Outside of school, I also love to play the piano and volunteer at a free clinic nearby. What would you plan to contribute to the WJCL if you were in the office you are running for? If I were elected I would love to first increase communication between the WJCL Historian and Editor and local historians and editors in order to ease the access to photos and important information. Secondly, I would like to further publicize the Torch: WI. It is difficult to attract and engage readers with a very dense and informative work but through more interactive and intriguing additions to the publication I will strive to fix this. In addition to the technicalities of the Editor position, I am always willing to assist other officers if they ever need an extra hand. If you could have any movie or tv series get a modern-day remake, which would you choose and why? Jaws. All of them. Jaws is a classic and the only issue in my opinion is that, because of the lack of advanced CGI and the outdated technology, the intended thrill is now lost. Thus, I would love to see the Jaws movies with modern-day technology. It would be quite popular among all ages due to its origin and overall concept. What is your secret talent? I am oddly good at Piano Tiles. I travel fairly often so I have spent a lot of car rides and long plane rides playing Piano Tiles. Whenever I play, I score considerably high, with average scores ranging from the upper hundreds to mid thousands. Interestingly, this talent has somehow helped me in life. Now, I can text pretty fast and am quite good at video games due to this as well. If you could be transported to any time and place in Classical history for 24 hours, where and when would you go and what would you do? I would like to go back to second century Rome, specifically to the Colosseum. Obviously I would want to witness a classic gladiator fight, but first, I would want to go down underneath to where all the beasts were held and just walk down those hallways for about thirty minutes and then watch the games. It would be like that one scene in a movie where a guy walks down an empty hallway and hears growling. Then, the camera skips to a cage or a set of bars next to him, and the monster inside jumps out toward the camera. I personally think that would be really cool. Scary, but cool.

FOR THE OFFICE OF TECH CO: ILIA MIKHAILENKO What position are you running for and why did you decide to run for it? I am running for Technology Coordinator because of my drive to grow and improve the Wisconsin Junior Classical League and ignite a love for Latin in as many people as possible. Latin is considered by many to be a dying language, and I believe that the WJCL has done an outstanding job of informing people of the importance of the language and culture in our everyday lives.  Additionally, I have always had a natural interest in technology and would deeply enjoy meeting new people and joining a motivated and passionate team of officers who are striving to incite as manystudents as possible to learn about Latin. What are your qualifications for this position? My qualifications for technology coordinator include my technical aptitude as well as a multitude of unique ideas that will help grow the influence of the WJCL.  In addition, I feel that my past experience with website management and design, which includes directing my father’s business website, ensures that I have the skills necessary for this position. Tell us a little more about yourself, what interests do you have outside of Latin? I am very active outside of Latin and can be found volunteering at local community events and retirement homes.  Moreover, athletics have always been an important part of my life, and I played on Homestead’s volleyball team in the fall, am currently a part of the basketball team, and am planning on playing tennis in the spring.  Also, I am going to be on a competitive AAU basketball team during the summer which will lead to me constantly traveling to new and unfamiliar locations with my friends and family, which is also something that I greatly enjoy. What would you plan to contribute to the WJCL if you were in the office you are running for? Should I be elected as Technology Coordinator, I would contribute my innovative ideas and my love for the language.  Additionally, I would like to display a condensed visual representation of all of the WJCL’s achievements on the website’s homepage.  The WJCL is such an accomplished organization, and I want to showcase things such as the number of participating delegates and schools, awards and recognition received at Nationals, and the amount of money raised by the philanthropic efforts and campaigns.  Doing this would add to the WJCL’s credibility and prestigiousness, and also, could persuade students and schools to join, further growing the WJCL. What is your secret talent? My parents immigrated to the U.S. from Belarus, a country in eastern Europe, more than twenty years ago, and although they have both learned to speak English since then, I grew up in a Russian-speaking household and naturally became fluent in it. If you could be transported to any time and place in Classical history for 24 hours, where and when would you go and what would you do? I would go to the city of Rome when the republic was founded and the monarchy was expelled in 509 B.C. I would travel back to that specific time because of how important it was historically for not only Rome but the whole world.  It marked the beginning of just and morally-right governments and the slow decline of unfair dictatorships. During my trip, I would see the iconic monuments and landmarks, immerse myself in the rich culture, and, of course, witness the removal of the prejudiced monarchy and the establishment of the righteous democracy. If you could have dinner with any Classical person (mythological or real), who would it be and why? I would have dinner with Cicero, Rome’s most famous orator and philosopher, because I would be extremely interested to hear his revolutionary thoughts and ideas, and would also be fascinated by what he would have to say about issues in our modern society.
