Romp through your favorite Disney and Pixar film franchises

R

ather than dedicating their latest action-adventure romp to a single character or film franchise, Disney Interactive Studios is bringing fans the best of all worlds. Disney Universe blends famous characters, familiar worlds, and favorite film franchises for the ultimate fan-pleasing interactive experience. Donning costumes, encompassing both classic (Alice, Pumba) and contemporary (Stitch, Nemo) characters, players explore richly realized worlds, platform through obstacles, solve puzzles, battle baddies, and collect goodies.

The title supports four-player co-op, so it’s not unusual to see a quartet of characters from different Disney and Pixar films adventuring on-screen simultaneously. Furthermore, worlds based on franchises such as Monster’s Inc. and Alice in Wonderland mix additional ingredients into the cartoony cocktail; one level could find Nemo and Pumba traversing oversized mushrooms in Wonderland, while another might task Alice and Stitch with navigating Monstropolis’ many doors.

Complementing the universe-spanning fun is a pop-off-the-screen visual presentation befitting the personalitypacked characters and environments. While many details are yet to be revealed, the final game will include 40 unlockable costumes and six unique worlds. Friends and family, young and old, can expect Disney Universe to pack the fan service as high as Cinderella’s Castle when it arrives this fall. — Matt Cabral

Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man

F

ew movie villains have worked their way into fans’ hearts as much as the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters. Maybe it’s because it wasn’t really the marshmallow mascot who stomped his way through New York City but a mental image of him made real by an evil god. Maybe it’s because he looks like the always friendly and helpful Michelin Man. For whatever reason, people love this jet poofed antagonist. To celebrate his awesomeness, Diamond Select Toys will be producing a 7-inch statue later this month. The piece not only perfectly captures Stay-Puft’s jovial nature, but also lights up to double as a night light. If you’re a fan of large versions of beloved icons that stomp around at the end of movies, then keep your eyes peeled in October for the Statue of Liberty lights and sound statue based on Ghostbusters 2! — TJ Dietsch

rthur Suydam is one of America’s premiere illustrators. Heavy Metal, National Lampoons, Penthouse Comix, and children’s books like Bre’r Rabbit and The Wind in the Willows have all born his stylized work. His images range from sexy to creepy and comforting to surreal, and nowhere is that more evident than his with zombie homages. Suydam created cover art for the “Marvel Zombies” event that paid homage to

famous comic book covers by turning all the characters into rotting, ravenous zombies. But the zombification didn’t stop there—Suydam has produced a line of artwork where he’s zombified everyone form Clint Eastwood to King Kong. Why would one of our most talented illustrators spend his time drawing corpses? Blame Michelangelo, Albert Dorne, and Norman Rockwell and whoever gave him access to dead bodies.

Things

about

f there’s one thing actors love manipulating more than audiences, it’s themselves: everyone from Tom Hanks to undisputed champion Christian Bale has gained or lost massive pounds in order to inhabit a character.

British actor Tom Hardy is no exception. Since his breakout role as career criminal Charlie Bronson in 2008’s “Bronson,” Hardy has gone from skinny to stacked in a matter of months. Since hearing that he’s bulking up for his role of Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises,” we’re definitely pumped for the end of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Check out Hardy’s shape-shifting as a weigh-in to the main event:

Pre-Creatine Hardy poses for friends in this undated MySpace photo.

Bronson For “Bronson,” Hardy gained a staggering 42 lbs. using compound movements that focused on his upper body. (His legs, he says, “looked like a stork’s” in comparison.)

I Spy For the upcoming espionage thriller “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” Hardy cut back on the weights and let nature take its course.

Warrior For the September 2011 MMA film, Hardy—who had lost a significant amount of mass gained previously— put 28 lbs. back on in six weeks, upping the cardio to lean out.

Bane For 2012’s “The Dark Knight Rises,” Hardy is again ratcheting up to Bronson-esque levels of body mass to portray ‘roidedout bruiser Bane. — Jake Rossen

UFC Personal

A Fitness Game That’s Actually Fun

L

15

Things

et’s face it, fitness games aren’t much fun. Regardless of platform, exercise titles have difficulty keeping players engaged passed the first 15 minutes. Granted, working out isn’t supposed to be a party; but still, seeing that these titles are spinning in our game consoles, it’d be nice if they were more appealing than a 30 minute walk on the treadmill. UFC Personal Trainer, however, may be the “fitness” game to breakthrough where others have failed. By combining fat-blasting, muscle-building routines with a sport that sees millions of fans flocking to the pay-per-view channel, THQ has struck a balance that could finally see gamers getting off the couch and breaking a sweat.

A big part of Personal Trainer’s appeal is its use of the sport’s real-life trainers. If you’re a UFC fan, it’s much easier to be genuinely interested in--and motivated by--advice and tips coming from guys you recognize and respect, rather than some robotic ab-flaunting avatar.

The game sidesteps boredom by blending traditional routines and exercises with cooler mixed martial arts moves. It’s definitely easier to work through the familiar stretches and crunches when you know you’ll be rewarded with some slick wrestling, kickboxing and Muay Thai training.

We had a calorie-burning blast just participating in the hitthe-mitts challenges. Facing the mean mugs of many of the UFC’s actual brawlers, we were tasked with some hardhitting rhythm and timing-based routines that were both fun and rewarding.

On top of leveraging the UFC’s massive appeal to keep fitness-minded fans focused, Personal Trainer packs in the expected content: customizable circuits, pre-set routines, and progress-tracking. Competitive challenges even add a multiplayer component to the fist-flying action. — Matt Cabral

oger Ebert still has a voice. The veteran film critic—he nabbed a Pulitzer Prize in 1975—may have lost his speech due to a struggle with cancer, but his sharp wit is in perfect health. In anticipation of his forthcoming autobiography, “Life Itself,” (September 2), we’ve compiled some of his best put-downs provoked by bad movie experiences. Better him than us.

Armageddon (1998) “No matter what they’re charging to get in, it’s worth more to get out.”

Twilight: Eclipse (2010) “Of Taylor Lautner’s musculature, and particularly his abs, much has been written. He has a great build, but I remind you that an abdominal six-pack must be five seconds’ work for a shapeshifter.”

Judge Dredd (1995) “One of the Angel brothers has a dial implanted in his forehead, so his anger level can be adjusted. Nice touch. His IQ seems set on Defrost.”

Jaws: The Revenge (1987) “I believe that the shark wants revenge against Mrs. Brody. I do. I really do believe it. After all, her husband was one of the men who hunted this shark and killed it, blowing it to bits. And what shark wouldn’t want revenge against the survivors of the men who killed it?” — Jake Rossen

Zombies Are No Longer the Survival Horror Series’ Greatest Threat

B

orrowing a page from the addictive, co-op focused, undead-slaughtering Left 4 Dead series, Capcom’s tweaking their signature survival horror franchise. Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City forgoes subtler monster-in-closet moments in favor of a more action-oriented third-person shooter that can be braved solo or with up-to-three zombie-hating pals. The best part? This time we get to play as the bad, er, really bad guys. As an Umbrella Security Services member, you attempt to wipe out the flesh-craving hordes, the far deadlier bio-organic weapons (aka: big bad monsters), and even the military forces sent into the city to uncover your employer’s devious deeds. Sure, it might sound like a daunting task, but these four body bag-filling psychos are up to it. — Matt Cabral

Bertha

Umbrella Security Service’s only she-killer, Bertha serves as the team medic. In addition to traditional weapons, she’s outfitted with a variety of sharp surgical implements--we’re guessing she likes to use her bonesaw even when a band-aid will do the trick.

Beltway

The team’s demolitions expert, Beltway is a heavily armored badass with a penchant for blowing things up with grenades, C4, and anything else containing a fuse and combustible components. It generally takes more than dental records to identify his victims.

Vector

The team’s go-to guy for recon, Vector’s skilled at sneaking and killing. His cloaking ability is especially effective at getting him within neck-snapping range of his victims; by the time they see him coming, he’s already twisted their spines into a balloon animal.

Spectre

The killer quartet’s surveillance operative, Spectre’s all about getting things done quietly. Outfitted with a number of stealth-aiding gadgets, including a slick pair of visionaugmenting goggles, he’s like Sam Fisher…only with the personality of a serial killer.

ugust 16’s DVD release of “Dexter: The Complete Fifth Season” brings America’s favorite serial killer back into living rooms and just in time for stragglers to catch up before the sixth season premieres on Showtime in September. How does it rank against the first four years? So glad you asked.

Dexter: The Complete First Season (2006) Big Bad: The Ice Truck Killer, the mutilating Miami marauder who has eyes for Dexter’s sister Deb. Lame Subplot: None, though girlfriend Rita kidnapping and rehoming a barking dog comes close. Bloody Good Time? F-bomb-dropping Doakes, Rita’s abusive ex, and Dexter’s sordid family history—no wonder the guy could just wring someone’s neck. A-

Dexter: The Complete Second Season (2007) Big Bad: Aside from crazy girlfriend Lila, none—Dexter is put off the hunt by a persistent Doakes, who suspects Dexter is coo-coo for Cocoa Puffs. Lame Subplot: LaGuerta’s tension with new precinct boss Lieutenant Pascal. Zzzz. Bloody Good Time? Doakes vs. Dexter is the series’ greatest rivalry: too bad Lila can’t possibly equal that tension. B

Dexter: The Complete Fourth Season (2009) Big Bad: John Lithgow as the artery-slitting Trinity Killer Lame Subplot: Detective Quinn romances a reporter with ulterior motives. Bloody Good Time? Thanks to Lithgow’s family man-slashmaniac, Dexter had his best opposition since the first season’s Ice Truck Killer—and that last scene is still one of the biggest shockers in TV history. A

Dexter: The Complete Third Season (2008) Big Bad: Miguel Prado, assistant DA and closet psycho. Lame Subplot: Detective Batista romances an undercover cop. Bloody Good Time? Dexter tutoring an aspiring sociopath had potential, but Prado (Jimmy Smits) is a poor substitute for the usual standard of crazy. B-

Dexter: The Complete Fifth Season (2010) Big Bad: Jordan Chase, the motivational speaker who likes to unwind by molesting and killing women. Lame Subplot: Newlyinvolved Batista and LaGuerta argue over money. Seriously. Bloody Good Time? Dexter finds a protégé in Julia Stiles, which has the series flirting with self-parody; a cheat involving the near-discovery by sister Deb only added to fan frustration. B— Jake Rossen

Hopefully things won’t get too violent and we’ll be able to walk out of Toys “R” Us with our toy without hassle. Look how cool this thing is! We’ve seen a lot of Robocop figures over the years from foot-tall Hot Toys versions to ones based on the animated series, but we’re partial to this one because it’s so completely accurate. He stands 7 inches tall and comes with both his trademark gun and interface needle, ready to clean up a crappy futuristic Detroit that actually looks a lot like that city today. The figure comes appropriately articulated for a clunky cyborg from 1987. It looks spot-on from the flick and makes us hope equally accurate Dick Jones, ED-209, and Clarence Boddicker figures aren’t too far off. The world needs a Kurtwood Smith action figure! — TJ Dietsch

s the title suggests, Robot Entertainment’s Orcs Must Die!, available later this summer, tasks players with killing as many as the ugly green suckers as possible. However, in a neat--and much needed--twist on tower defense-style gameplay, the orc-slaying is done primarily with inventive traps; these baddie-ensnaring devices can be set before the beasts are unleashed as well as during battle, adding an action-driving tweak to the strategy-focused genre. While traditional melee and magic attacks can be unleashed against the hordes as they infiltrate your fortress, we prefer these more inspired means.

ARROW WALL Placing arrow walls around the environment is always a good strategy, especially if you want to shish-ka-bob multiple enemies at once.

BOOM BARREL In addition to the expected explosive damage, boom barrels can also send baddies flying into other traps, like impaling ceiling spikes.

SPRING TRAP Placing orc-launching spring traps around bottomless pits and lava lakes is a good way to ensure your target won’t come back for revenge.

WALL BLADES If you prefer your orcs chopped into chunky little piles, setting up a few slicing and dicing wall blades should do the trick. — Matt Cabral

How Hollywood Plans to Haunt Theaters This Month and Beyond

A

s the summer film season winds down and movies like “Transformers” squeeze their last dollars out of audiences, studios are increasingly looking toward more modestly budgeted releases to help fill out their calendars.

Scaring the (literal) pants off a date often means revisiting proven franchises, which is why “Final Destination” has a fifth entry August 12. Now that “Saw” has ground to a halt, it may be the only major fear factory left standing. And for studios that often rely on serialized gore to help their bottom line, that’s a big deal.

No genre promises a better return on investment than horror, which can spend pennies on fake blood and draw millions in the process. That’s a big reason why five major horror offerings are scheduled for August, including a remake of the 1985 vamp-neighbor classic “Fright Night” and the more cerebral Guillermo del Toro-produced “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark.” But do any of them have what filmgoers want?

“Destination” delivers, Alexander says, because it follows the old adage of giving audiences something familiar, but different: “Each entry is linked only tenuously [with the last]. It preys on middle-class paranoia, benign objects causing violent, horrible deaths. It could go on forever.”

Maybe: at age 11—the first was released in 2000—“Destination” may soon succumb to its own mortality. But Alexander sees “Any time you get feedback about a horror movie doing very series potential in “Fright Night,” which stars Colin Farrell as a well, it’s not necessarily because of the horror fan,” explains Chris vampire up against a skittish teenager (Anton Yelchin) and a Alexander, editor-in-chief of Fangoria magazine. “It’s the general cheesy magician (David Tennant, in full-on Criss Angel mode). public buying the tickets, kids on a date night. The guy knows “From where I’m sitting, Disney is not messing around when the girl is going to get spooked and scared, and fear is tied in it comes to promoting this movie. They’ve been running this directly to the release of hormones which in turn increases their thing out for months to get the word out. So if it does well, chances of getting some action. That’s just the way it is.” they will definitely roll out another.”

And another. And another. Horror franchises are unique in that the audience seems to have a higher tolerance for film series that approach the double-digit mark, even though those same filmgoers roll their eyes at the prospect of another “Rocky.” “It’s recognizable,” Alexander says. “It’s like driving down the street and seeing a Starbucks or McDonald’s. They’re not serious diners or lovers of cuisine, but they recognize a brand. They’ll dip in and out and forget they’re even there.”

Studios have also found franchise potential in the “found footage” genre, which began in the modern era with 1999’s “Blair Witch Project” but can be traced all the way back to “Cannibal Holocaust” and its disturbing footage of animal cruelty. “Paranormal Activity” is prepping a third installment; September 2’s “Apollo 18” chronicles a moon mission we were never meant to see. “It’s a direct response to viral video and YouTube, people picking up a camera and shaking it around. It unnerves us. Our body and brain forgets we’re watching entertainment and we get lost in it. But every time you go back to the well, it gets a little more stale and dull.”

Evil Dead (TBD) Sam Raimi is still intent on rebooting his seminal horror series about teenagers spooked by a cabin in the woods; Diabo Cody is rewriting Fede Alvarez’s script. Raimi will produce. Hellraiser (TBD) Clive Barker’s original about demon S/M-loving Cenobites was a creeper that spawned eight sequels; Patrick Lussier (“My Bloody Valentine 3-D”) will direct a remake.

The Possession (2012) Formerly “Dibbuk Box,” the chiller’s central conceit—a haunted antique box— could be passed along for years. Sam Raimi produces another scare-fest.

World War Z (2012) Max Brooks’ zombie apocalypse novel is now shooting with Brad Pitt in the lead.

Alexander believes the same holds true for 3-D, which has easy appeal for horror fans looking for a visceral experience: why not have eyeballs flying at you? Poor conversions, though, have made audiences jaded over the technology. “It’s cycling out because so many people are trotting out everything in 3-D, using conversion where it’s not even authentic. The audience isn’t stupid. They can tell it’s not working. It’s the extra mile, but it’s not everything.” So what is? Studios like New Line practically made their fortune on recurring characters like Freddy Krueger— invulnerable serial killers who propagated what critic Roger Ebert infamously dubbed the “dead teenager genre.” If 3-D, shaky-cam footage, and unseen evil isn’t going to last, what can? “The boogeyman,” Alexander says. “Someone you can put on a t-shirt. The Dark

Ages

artists decided that they were storytellers. Worse, some editors believed them, feeding into the artists’ egos–after all, why pay for a writer when Todd McFarlane could be the next Walter Simonson? Why pay a Louise Simonson when Rob Liefeld can handle the stories all by himself? Why cater to the wishes of an award-winning writer who has been the sole voice for a book for 17 years (Chris Claremont), when you can turn the reigns over to his artists, Whilce Portacio and Jim Lee? As a result, the caliber of the stories slipped. Sometimes dramatically–the only “Torment” felt in reading Todd McFarlane’s first story arc on Spider-Man was of the poor readers that tried to figure out what the heck was going on, or why they should even care.

After the creative genius of comics’ Copper Age, with brilliant writers such as Alan Moore, John Byrne, and Frank Miller, amongst others, bringing a more modern edge to their characters while maturing in story content, the only way for the comic industry to go from there was down.

And down it went. Hard. In one sense, two of those three previously mentioned creators are to blame, Byrne and Miller. Not directly, mind you, but through their successes as writers on their own artistic projects, and sometimes writing for other artists, rising young

Then, since they did not need writers, and with how sycophantic editors were to top artists they weren’t needed either, the artists decided that they did not even need their publisher, and they would do it all on their own.

Studios, where one book from their studio felt just like the next one, Wildstorm Studios, where everyone drew like Jim Lee, or Top Cow, where everyone drew like Marc SIlvestri. Oh, and at least 75% of the stories were total crap. Much like the NBA after the loss of Michael Jordan, Marvel Comics, rather than looking at the product as a whole to boost, looked for the Next Big Thing, and names like Stephen Platt, Dale Keown, and Art Thibert popped up, until, of course, they too left. Then, it was Joe Madureira, only he would leave too. They would start up their own creatorowned properties at Image, only to have the exact same problems that the first artists had–ridiculously late product and horrifically written stories.

While Marvel was facing a mass exodus and Image was facing mediocre product, whenever they actually shipped stuff, DC had its own creative problems. To generate interest, DC became the home of one stunt after another. The death of Thus was born Image Comics. Superman generated a ton of interest, so next up was Then, quickly, the artists Batman, who had his back turned into the very broken. Batman. Only, he then quit, giving the costume to Dick Grayson. Who had it for all of two months, and then Bruce was back. With a new costume. Clark, meanwhile,

had a mullet. Oh, and then he was killed. Not as Superman, but as Clark. But Clark got better. Sure, the Daily Planet was wrecked, but it got better too.

With DC getting some sales boosts from these stunts, other characters went through them as well. Hal Jordan? Let’s face it–no one liked him, Gerard Jones’ writing was mediocre at best, and he had been cancelled multiple times in the past. Let’s kill everyone he knows on Earth. Then, let’s have him go insane. Well, except for that one issue (#47), where everything seemed fine as he hung out with Ollie, but I digress, or, rather DC did. With #48, Hal was talking to ghosts, then off to kill the Green Lanterns. Why? Who the heck knows? Then, let’s give the ring not to any of his backups but a drunken artist puking in a back alley. He’ll be a nice enough guy, and we’ll give him a cute girlfriend too–until we kill her and stuff her in the fridge, because that’s what happens with girlfriends.

The Flash, meanwhile, would get a relative from the 30th Century by way of the 20th Century named Bart Allen, the child of Don Allen, onehalf of the Tornado Twins. (Speaking of them, if Barry Allen is such a good guy, why is he a deadbeat dad? You’d think since he returned that he’d want to take care of them…) Bart would become Impulse, a Kid Flash for the next generation. Speaking of next generations, it looked like DC was heading that way with Oliver Queen, as he was stuck with a bomb on his arm with Superman there to cut his arm off and free him–cue The Dark Knight Returns. Ollie’s arm was too important to him, though, so he just let himself blow up. Yeah, that makes total sense. The hero that created the universe–after all, Zero Hour said that he created

the Big Bang–sacrificed himself rather than having a disability, sending home a great message to the kiddies. Then, to add to that awesome

message, his illegitimate son pops up, making that deadbeat Barry Allen look like dad of the year when compared to Ollie. To make

Dark Horse during this time was churning out Aliens and Predator tripe month after month while trying to get people to care about their new superhero universe– they didn’t. Malibu, after publishing Image for a month or two, thought that they could set up a superhero universe, so they hired all these big names to come up with new characters, but then didn’t keep those big names around to actually produce the books, pulling the comic equivalent of bait-andswitch. Valiant was hyping every other issue as the first appearance of the next new hot character, even saying so on some covers, while their art and stories both

progressively declined. And that, my friends, is why I am labeling this era the Dark Ages. That said, there was some good to come out of this era, some of them truly outstanding, but we’ll get to that in Part 2 next week. In the meanwhile, feel free to let me know your thoughts at mark.haverty@wizardworld. com. — Mark Allen Haverty

The Four Worst Titles of

the Dark Ages 4

Lady Death This title was the highest profile of the “Bad Girl” books of the ’90s, and set the tone for all of them. A superheroine with next-to-no clothes on while posing in ridiculous positions that accomplish nothing other than giving desperate nerds some T&A, and a “plot” which mattered little and could have been written by your average junior high school male. Oh, and whenever possible, toss in six or more variant covers, and multiple swimsuit specials.

2

Fantastic Force Curse you, Tony Isabella. See, Isabella reported this rumor that he heard that Fantastic Four was to be cancelled and be replaced by a new title, Fantastic Force. Marvel laughed off those rumors while also simultaneously realizing that this would be a great title to build around. Yes, the italics on “great” is for sarcasm. Who would be in this title? Franklin Richards for one, but not as a kid, but as an aged overnight teenager thanks to his grandfather, kidnapping him and bringing him back 10 or so years later as Psi-Lord. His aunt from an alternate future, Tara, joined him on the team, and no, I have no idea how she was his aunt unless Nathaniel Richards got his groove thing on in the future. Joining them would be a purple Inhuman that looked like an ape and an African version of Justice League Detroit’s Vibe named Vibraxas.

Youngblood

The later issues would improve, but the initial miniseries was so ridiculously horrible that Rob Liefeld himself can’t explain what the heck is going on in the first issue. The rest of the series would be just as bad, and horrifically late–so late that the coupon promotion enclosed in later issues had already expired before it arrived. Years later, this would become an amazing series, but that was all thanks to Alan Moore.

1

Team Titans DC wanted Liefeld back after his successes with X-Force, and they had a proposal of his for a relaunch as “Team Titans.” Rob never signed on, so DC went and created a whole new one, spinning out of the absurd Armageddon 2001 crossover. See, they’re from one of the 25 or so alternate futures shown in this crossover, and they come back in time to prevent their own existence. One of them just happens to look just like poor, dead Terra, and she may or may not be her, depending on the writer, and there was Mirage, who was raped by Deathwing, who may or may not have been a futuristic Dick Grayson, who she tried to rape at one point by posing as Starfire. They also had Nightrider, the superhero vampire–that makes total sense. Oh, and along the way, other Team Titans teams would appear, all on a similar quest. Or maybe not. Who knows? Who even cares? — Mark Allen Haverty
