Click Here to Download the Book On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when -- or if -- it will go away. Dale Barbara, Iraq vet and now a short-order cook, finds himself teamed with a few intrepid citizens -- town newspaper owner Julia Shumway, a physician's assistant at the hospital, a select-woman, and three brave kids. Against them stands Big Jim Rennie, a politician who will stop at nothing -- even murder -- to hold the reins of power, and his son, who is keeping a horrible secret in a dark pantry. But their main adversary is the Dome itself. Because time isn't just short. It's running out.

The way King writes made me feel like I lived i Chester's Mill and was under the dome too. I am king of iffy about the ending of the book, but at the same time I'm not sure how else it could have been explained.

Under the Dome is yet another awesome work of art by Stephen King. I listened to this book versus reading it. First of all, it is a very long book and since I read so many books for reviews - it was easier to stay focused listening while I was reading so many others. I will first say that I don't think this is his best piece of work that, in my opinion, still belongs to 11/22/63. This book is about so many different topics - it touches on social relationships, survival of the fittest, political abuse, ecological disaster, friendships, and so much more. The book is superficially about the Dome but it is about so much more. From the outside looking in - so what! The town ends up under a dome. Life should still go on and eventually supplies will run out but normally the town should survive with being careful for quite some time. Jim Rennie and his son are as nasty as nasty can get. Jim works the system to his benefit and participates predome in quite a few illegal activities - because he can. Once the dome comes down he begins playing a

dangerous calculated chess game with the lives of everyone in Chesters Mill. He is the 2nd Selectman but clearly has full control. Junior Rennie, Jim's son, is simply CRAZY. Clearly he was before the dome but definitely inside the dome. By the time the dome comes down, he can barely control his activities. Does the dome ever come down? How did the dome get there? What can be down from the inside? From the Outside? If you have read any Stephen King books - you will love this book. At first the book moves rather slowly but that is Stephen King's MO. He thoroughly sets up his characters before moving forward. He spends tons of pages (hours when listening) detailing the events of the first couple dome hours.

This is actually the first Stephen King novel I have read. In the past I tried reading others but just could not get into them. I think seeing some of the movies ruined the books for me. I always thought of King as a gory murder writer since I only know him from the movies of his books like Christine, Firestarter, and Pet Sematary. A co-worker recommend Under the Dome and said he believed I would like it; he was right. For the past five years I have read almost all my books on an iPhone. With the small screen the page numbers are not accurate and pretty much useless. When my husband asked one night what I was reading and I told him I was still working on Under the Dome he commented how it had been a month and I was still on the same book. I looked up the title on Amazon to find out that is was a 1092 pages. That explained why it was taking so long for me to finish. Overall the book Under the Dome was very entertaining. I found some areas dragging on and think King could have slimmed the book down without impacting the story at all. The forced interactions between the characters and stresses they were put under were well described and I could imagine the scenes taking place. There are lots of side stories going on amongst the main plot that are interesting but at times I found myself getting mad at the book for bouncing between them so much. For some reason I found the ending kind of disappointing. It is almost like King was getting tired of writing and just wanted to get it over with. I am not an editor or writer and since I have not read any of his other books I don't have anything to compare this with. It is just a feeling I got while reading. The ending was still great and I stayed up late reading for hours to find out what happens. I just think for some reason it could have been done better. I highly recommend Under the Dome and think anyone who gives it a try will end up not being able to put it down.
