When Lily's fierce-hearted black "stand-in mother," Rosaleen, insults three of the deepest racists in town, Lily decides to spring them both free. They escape to Tiburon, South Carolina--a town that holds the secret to her mother's past. Taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sisters, Lily is introduced to their mesmerizing world of bees and honey, and the Black Madonna. This is a remarkable novel about divine femal power, a story women will share and pass on to their daughters for years to come.
Reviews I should have read this book long ago. It became very popular when I was working in a book store. For some reason I had an aversion to reading books on the best seller list, which I suppose sounds counter-intuitive. When it wasn't quite so popular anymore, then I thought I should read it. Around that same time, they announced the movie release. Once again, I internally groaned and told myself that I was not going to watch the movie before I had even read the book. Now that movie has long ago shed the attention of the mainstream media, I finally picked up the copy my husband bought for me some time ago. I read it in about seven hours over the course of an 18- hour period. I couldn't stand to put it down! It was so compelling! I will be 'chewing' on this one for quite awhile, though not quite in the same way Rosaleen chewed her snuff. I will not be doing any spitting! The irony is that many years ago I read "Dance of the Dissident Daughter," also by Sue Monk Kidd. It became a foundational work for me, and I began to refer to myself as a "Dissident Daughter." Sue has inspired me twice now and there's noi turning back!
The Secret Life of Bee's is an enduring story set on a southern bee farm. The characters will enlighten and warm your heart. The Secret Life of Bee's is similar to many southern stories; however, the bee lore that Kidd interjects throughout makes the book unique and interesting. The Secret Life of Bee's is a heartwarming, feel good read. There are universal lessons about family and self throughout. The main character, Lily Owens is fleeing an abusive father and an all-consuming truth surrounding her mother's death. The Secret Life of Bee's is set in the 1960's when racial tensions and violence were at an all time high. Since the death of her mother, Lilly has a few precious clues as to her last days. The clues lead Lily and Rosaleen to Tiburon, South Carolina where they meet the `calendar sisters', May, June, and August Boatwright. The Boatwright sisters operate a successful Bee farm. Lily and Rosaleen are welcomed to the farm with open arms. Through her work on the farm, Lily is able to examine her past and begin to trust as she finds love again. The Secret Life of Bee's is the story of mothers. The reader will travel with Lily as she experiences each of the four remarkable women ~ Rosaleen, May, June, and August. Each of these women is a teacher and guide to Lily. It is through her experiences that she is able to discern that a mother is more than just a biological bond.
This book is amazing! I loved reading this beautiful book it was full of love, religion of many different variety, understanding and most of all and the best diversity that they overcome together. She's just trying to stay with the people who care about her most. This is a book I would recommend to everyone and anyone. Lily is trying to learn of her past and everyone who was in it. Her nanny gets in trouble with the law and has no other choice but to free her black nanny and flee for her life away from her mentally and physically abusing father and everything she's ever known. She once had found a picture of a Black Mary in her mother's old things and it had
written a town. She's brought what she needs to get there and travels with her nanny to find the Black Mary picture to find the people that her mother had cared about to have saved that picture. She's leaving behind everything she knows for everything fascinating about her past, present, and future. She falls in love, finds her calling and finds a real family and the right people to take care of her. This book is a Romance and Mystery and just a hint of Adventure. This fiction novel is going to leave you wanting more just like me. I hope everyone reads this perfect book. Some guys may think that this is a "chick flick" novel but no this is definetly meant for all gender. I'm definetly going to read this fabulous book again. Don't judge a book by its cover anytime!
