And you must always mind the fence that surrounds the village; the fence that protects the village from the Forest of Hands and Teeth. But, slowly, Mary’s truths are failing her. She’s learning things she never wanted to know about the Sisterhood and its secrets, and the Guardians and their power, and about the Unconsecrated and their relentlessness. When the fence is breached and her world is thrown into chaos, she must choose between her village and her future—between the one she loves and the one who loves her. And she must face the truth about the Forest of Hands and Teeth. Could there be life outside a world surrounded in so much death?
Reviews I have to be honest. When I first heard of this book I thought: zombies. Flesh eating/Bite-infecting zombies. NO-WAY. The second and the third time I came across it... well, the same thoughts ran in my head. By the time I finally decided to read it, my mind was full of doubts and... prejuice. Why would anyone want to read about zombies? Why would anyone want to write about zombies? Now,I can safely answer the first question: because this book is amazing. When everybody knows the entire world is a zombie-surrounded village in the middle of a forest, Mary believes in a larger world, in the stories her mother told her about the sea, in the existence of more people, maybe in other villages, outside of the fences created for their safety. And when everything is falling down: her family, her hopes for a future, her love, her entire world, her beliefs may be the only thing that will keep her - and others - alive. The story is absolutely breathtaking. I highly recommend tissues at hand. And a few day of recovery after reading it. Yes, it hits you that hard.
I had seen this book around for a while, but had never really wanted to read it. But then one day, browsing through books at the library, I decided to pick it up and give it a try. I am so glad I did. This book is simply amazing. People who are into post-apocalyptic stories are definitely going to love it. A similar situation to that of the Will Smith movie "I Am Legend", where people become Infected and are, in effect, turned into zombies, which are, in this novel, called Unconsecrated. This book has everything, from horror to romance to religion to family values. I thought I had it all figured out, knew exactly how the book would end and was nearly complaining about it's predictability. But I was so wrong. There was a twist. A horribly shocking twist that I never saw coming, and this twist made me cry, and that for me is very rare. People looking for a different kind of book to read should give this one a go. I can honestly say that it is unlike anything I have ever read before.
Clearly, the fact that I finished Carrie Ryan's THE FOREST OF HANDS IN TEETH in a few short hours means something! I haven't done that since THE HUNGER GAMES. Seriously, this book is incredible! I knew going in that it was a zombie book. What I didn't know was that Ryan's beautiful, layered tale would be truly allegorical. This isn't just a story of a young girl trying to get through each day in a village completely surrounded by the living dead; it's a story of a girl living in an oppressive society and longing for something more, something beyond her reach. It's a story of hope in the face of absolute despair. It's a story about the grass always being greener on the other side of the fence. But it's also a story about priorities: How far will Mary go to get what she's always dreamed of? Mary is such an interesting main character. I ached for her in the first few chapters, when everything seems to go wrong for her. But she has such internal strength; I cheered for her as she tried to sort through the mess that was her life. As the book continued, I realized that what Mary wanted was not so simple. By the end, I wondered if what Mary wanted was worth it. It would be interesting to see this explored in a sequel. I'm not sure if Ryan is working on a second... I'll have to go check her blog, which is linked on the right. In a way, the book is about striving for your dreams and never letting anything get in your way. It's about how you deal with your problems. This is a book that will suck you in and then spit you out several hours later, wondering what hit you.
