Reviews First, this is the most fascinating, informative, and convincing diet/health book I've read in recent years. I won't get into an exhaustive discussion of content, as others have done that, but here's the book's thesis in a nutshell: Dr. Davis posits that wheat products are the single biggest cause of weight gain, body fat, and a host of other diseases including heart disease and diabetes, and backs it up with research and studies. I can't believe I'm saying this about a health book, but this was actually a page turner - it's quite convincing and gripping. This is one of those books where you will find yourself saying "wow" every five minutes. Now, a few minor caveats. First, while he mentions it briefly, Davis doesn't emphasize strongly enough that removing wheat must be combined with other dietary restrictions. For example, you can't remove wheat, but then gorge on sodas, sugary snacks, and ice cream and expect to lose weight and be healthy. Wheat is a certainly a major factor, but it's not the only piece of the puzzle. Second, a valid argument could be made that this book is simply another tome advocating low carb eating. However, Davis is more convincing and thorough in his argument than others I've read. Third, removing wheat products from your diet is a JOB in my view. It's everywhere - at the office, at parties, barbecues, etc. A tremendous, almost inhuman amount of discipline is required in my humble opinion unless you're a total recluse. Despite these minor negatives, the book is so well written and researched that I'm sticking with five stars. Highly recommended for the health conscious reader.
This book was my aha moment! When I used to eat certain wheat snacks, like Wheat Thins, I always noticed I would get hives, headaches but I never made the connection I may be allergic to wheat. This book helped me understand exactly how my wheat allergy has negatively affected my health. Giving up wheat, I have cleared up allergies, congestion, indigestion, bloating and cramping. I would have liked a clearer understanding on wheat vs. gluten since you hear so much in the media about gluten these days. So, I had to do my own research to better understand the differences. But what the book does very well is get to the heart of how to avoid all wheat, including breakfast cereals, breads, pasta, pretzels and other wheat products. He encourages us to eat fruits, veggies, lean proteins, raw nuts and seeds, healthy oils. I concur and follow allow of his suggestions and my health continues to improve everyday. I feel like I'm twenty years younger! As a result of this book, I further went on to learn about other food allergies that causes weight gain, puffiness, bloating, and indigestion. My health has dramatically improved but not just because of wheat, but I also eliminate any foods that are unhealthy, fattening, or addictive, including white refined sugar, processed foods,
boxed/instant foods. I focus my eating on clean, healthy, organic, natural are raw foods... that keeps me healthy, balanced, and happy.
For years and years and years I've suffered with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis and they all got worse and worse every year. I went from taking 500 mg of metformin to 1500mg and my glucose levels only rose higher. My morning blood sugar levels even with all that Metformin were 150+. I took several medications for blood pressure with horrible side effects. I took 125mcg of thyroxin with increases every year. FINALLY I went gluten free and within a week, literally one week, I no longer needed Metformin or blood pressure meds and, amazingly, I was able to decrease the thyroid meds by half. ALL OF THIS IN ONE WEEK! Now my morning blood sugar levels with NO medication are 70 - 80! The arthritis was so bad in my knee and foot that I used a cane most of the time. Now I don't use a cane at all and can walk without limping! Within 6 weeks I had lost 25 pounds without trying and felt healthier at age 60 than I have in 30 years. I felt like I was being eaten alive by autoimmune diseases and now I feel healthy. I can't even find words to express what that feels like, I feel HEALTHY again! If you have any autoimmune condition I would ask you to just try it. You have nothing to lose and maybe a new life to gain. And it's not difficult at all. There are MANY really good gluten free products so you'll never feel deprived. But even if there weren't substitutes I would NEVER eat gluten again. For me it's poison.
