They are an unlikely pair: George is "small and quick and dark of face"; Lennie, a man of tremendous size, has the mind of a young child. Yet they have formed a "family," clinging together in the face of lonelinss and alienation. Laborers in California's dusty vegetable fields, they hustle work when they can, living a hand-to-mouth existence. For George and Lennie have a plan: to own an acre of land and a shack they can call their own. When they land jobs on a ranch in the Salinas Valley, the fulfillment of their dream seems to be within their grasp. But even George cannot guard Lennie from the provocations of a flirtatious woman, nor predict the consequences of Lennie's unswerving obedience to the things George taught him.
Reviews For some reason Steinbeck has always been stuck in the "boring" category of my brain. When I picked "Of Mice and Men" up at a secondhand bookshop and started reading I thought to myself, "I really must remember that generally the famous authors are famous for a reason". Anyway ... Wonderful, easy to read, book. SImply told story, emotive characters, and gave me a real sense of the era. What I especially loved was the moral decisions made by the characters, and how differently they were framed than they would be now. The whole moral flavour of the ending scene is like nothing that I've seen in modern story telling. Loved it, and it started me off on a Steinbeck rampage.
I read and studied this book for an English GCSE. Personally, the book touched me and was the perfect mix of sadness, violence and humour. The characters really spoke to me, and I found it an interesting read which also provides a insight to 1930s America. My emotions rreadign this mixed from amusement to sadness. I'd refer this book and recommend it to those who wish to find a book which provides a accurate source of History and humour. I'd also recommend it due to it's writer creating beautiful painted scenes and the way the characters were written, made it feel that they were in the room reading it.
Of Mice and Men, which was a novel wrote by John Steinbeck. This storybook took place a few miles south of Soledad, two men running down the grass to a small river and hide in the bush, behind them were couples of men searching for them. The brilliant sun hang high on the blue sky above them, they were breathless for running so far from Weed. When those searching men were away, they came out of the bush, and sit on the grass relax. George who was a small and quick, with restless eyes and sharp, strong feature, the other man who was named Lennie, a real big one, with a lot of strength. The scene of running away lead us to the beginning of the story. This is a really good book, the first thing why I like is because that this story tells me how the life was for American women in that early time, Curley’s wife, who given no named for her, and she was not allowing to talk to other men beside his husband, she can’t go to anywhere, but stay in his husband’s house, and waiting for him to coming back from the farm, she got no right to do anything she wanted, even she wants to persuade her dream to become as a movie star, and her parents couldn’t let her to do that, and she married the only young and richer man in the farm, Curley. There had no choice for her. The second thing why I like it is because that this is a short story book, and the vocabulary in this book was easy for me, so I can finish it really fast. A good don’t need a really big word or to be really long, it must be interesting to others, so the reader would want to read more. During the reading, I also learn a lot words, and reading an book help me to improve my English reading skill. But, even this is a good book, I don’t really like the ending of this book, Lennie was eventually killed by George,
because he kill Curley’s wife, and he running away to hide in the bush near the river that George had told him the other night before, when George got there with his gun, he got no choice but kill Lennie by himself, because he doesn’t want Curley capture him, and lock him in a big cage, treat him like a dog, that would be doing not good to him, since he killed Curley’s wife, there has not reason to let him go. The story was ended after Lennie was dead, we could image how the life was for George, he could have a small house, and sitting on his armed-chair around the fire place, listening to the rain falling down to his roof, the room was really warm, Candy was in the back of the house. George sign suddenly, looking at the ceiling he began to think of Lennie, ad the scene of travel and live with him, he missed him so much, he got his dream house that he always want, but here just him and Candy, without Lennie being there, and always go around with him. “ Lennie, where are you right now? Are you in the heaven and playing with your little rabbits? I miss you so much.”
