Click Here to Download the Book Reacher is back! A Wanted Man is a new masterpiece of suspense—from #1 New York Times bestselling author Lee Child. Four people in a car, hoping to make Chicago by morning. One man driving, eyes on the road. Another man next to him, telling stories that don’t add up. A woman in the back, silent and worried. And next to her, a huge man with a broken nose, hitching a ride east to Virginia. An hour behind them, a man lies stabbed to death in an old pumping station. He was seen going in with two others, but he never came out. He has been executed, the knife work professional, the killers vanished. Within minutes, the police are notified. Within hours, the FBI descends, laying claim to the victim without ever saying who he was or why he was there. All Reacher wanted was a ride to Virginia. All he did was stick out his thumb. But he soon discovers he has hitched more than a ride. He has tied himself to a massive conspiracy that makes him a threat—to both sides at once. In Lee Child’s white-hot thriller, nothing is what it seems, and nobody is telling the truth. As the tension rises, the twists come fast and furious, keeping readers guessing and gasping until the explosive finale. A single story arc: 61 HOURS, WORTH DYING FOR and now A WANTED MAN. Simply a man trying to get to a warm, sexy voice he heard over the phone lines coming from Virginia.
Reviews Lee Child's Jack Reacher books are the perfect holiday read. They don't require too much concentration, the plot is never too complicated and the characters are both familiar but mysterious enough to hold reader interest. And then, of course, there's Jack Reacher: ex-military cop, six foot five inches with no physical baggage apart from his wallet and toothbrush, he doesn't so much drift through life as collide with it head on. This book is no exception. Hitching a ride to Virginia one cold, dark night, Reacher finds himself in a warm car with two men and a woman who all appear, at first, to be part of a sales team. It doesn't take long for Reacher to realize that something is wrong with the facade these passengers present and when the woman starts to blink in morse code to him, Reacher knows his instincts are right. While this book started a little slowly and, for Child, loosely (the plot took a bit to unfold and the connections to link), once it started it kept going - and furiously. Murder and mayhem follow (as we expect) Reacher or, rather, Reacher manages to follow it and just as well. Suddenly, Reacher finds himself deviating from his journey to Virginia and in the process saving, not the world, but US integrity and the lives of innocents. Child is one reliable author - you know what you're getting and how and there is such pleasure to be gained from that. A very good read.
Busy with the holidays, I was going to just rate this book and not bother writing a review. But after reading recent comments by others, I have to say a few words in defense of this very compelling read. Some of the elements of A Wanted Man are perhaps just too familiar to Jack Reacher fans, who have come to expect new knowledge and deviously clever plots every time. It's true that in this book, most of the "action" takes place in moving automobiles, resulting in a story based more on character than plot. But I'm fine with that: Jack Reacher, with his preternatural powers of observation and Spock-like ability to be rational regardless of circumstances--is exactly what I find most fascinating about the series. At the end he's right back where he started--trying to get to Virginia. Sorry, Reacher, but I just can't help hoping that something else interesting happens before you get there.
This was a real page-turner ... which was hard over the last few days as I was unwell and kept falling asleep ...
well I eventually finished it today - I think the author deserves all the praise reviewers heap on him for his writing, as it's totally in keeping with the thriller genre. I wouldn't normally read a book like this, but it was a gift from my sister and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Jack Reacher and all the many stories Lee Child has written about him could easily be made into movies ... a series of them, like James Bond. This is the first one I've read but I'm keen to read the others now (and there's lots of them!). This particular story just 'happens' upon Jack as he's innocently hitching down the highway and gets picked up by the people it all revolves around. Involves the FBI, CIA, other international crime and the way they all end up inter-lacing is just pretty clever. I really like that although Lee Child describes some of the yucky stuff in his writing, it is not over-done; and the hero (Jack Reacher) is so seasoned at keeping his distance from the horror, Lee Child writes like Jack is distanced from the horror - hard to explain in my less-than-expert prose!! But as someone who doesn't usually like violence in books (I'll put it down and just not read it if I don't like it or how it's written), this author handles it well. Great book
