In this pulse-pounding and thrillingly sensual novel, New York Times bestselling author Lara Adrian returns to the mesmerizing world of the Midnight Breed, following new characters into a dark future where an uneasy peace can unravel into war—and a great betrayal can mask an all-consuming love. Twenty years after the terror of First Dawn—when mankind learned that vampires lived secretly among them—the threat of violence reigns as the two species struggle to coexist. The only group preserving the fragile harmony is the Order, an elite cadre of Breed warriors dedicated to protecting humans and vampires alike. And in this precarious world of torn loyalties and shattered trust, Mira, a fiery squad captain, finds that every fight bears an intensely personal cost. Raised among the Order, Mira has always believed in the warrior’s code of swift—and even lethal—justice. But the one thing she desires more than the Order’s hard-won acceptance is Kellan Archer, a sexy but troubled Breed fighter. In love with him since childhood, Mira once broke through his tough exterior during an unexpected night of rapture, but the next day he mysteriously disappeared, never to return. Kellan didn’t think he would ever see Mira again—or have to confront the truth of why he left. After abandoning the Order years ago, he now leads a band of human rebels intent on carrying out their own vigilante rule of law. Yet a high-profile kidnapping assignment brings him face-to-face with the past he sought to avoid, and the striking woman he has tried desperately to forget. And as tensions mount and the risk of bloodshed grows, Kellan and Mira must take sides—between the competing missions that dominate their lives, and the electrifying passion that claims their hearts.
Reviews I am so bummed that I had to wait so long to read this book. I have always been a sucker for childhood sweethearts, young love. I have been rooting for this couple for a long time. I have loved the way Mira wouldn't give up on him and was just a pestering kid. I thought for a while that she and Nathan would end up together, but thought, no, it has to be Kellan. I am so happy for you two! I can't wait to figure out Rune and Carys. That seems like an interesting story. And Nathan and Jordana? Whoa! Someone got under Nathan's skin! So super excited to read more about them! It will be a wild ride I am sure.
Once again, I was drawn into the Breed world and couldn't put this book down no matter how hard I tried. I've been jumping back and forth through the Midnight Breed series so I did not know all that led up to the First Dawn or the discovery of the Breed as a species or their abilities (i.e. fangs and all that) but I felt that Lara Adrian did give me a good background to understand what had happened in order to lead up to this book. I felt Mira's pain and wanted her to have Kellan back more than anything. I love when a book can pull you in and make you truly feel like you're part of the story line. Loved, loved, loved this book! Can't wait for the next installment in this series, because I know there is more to come.
Wow. I LOVED this book. I actually finished it in a day, having stayed up til 2 am to read the last 18% (I read on a Kindle). I'm exhausted but I'm completely happy with the story. I get more stories! YAY! At least I should!! It's not very often in a series that we get to see the kids grown-up. I must admit that I absolutely love that aspect of the new direction we appear to be journeying on. Mira was one of those supporting characters who most of us probably fell under her spell. She had a rough life, but instead of being bitter about it, she seemed so generous of spirit. Seriously, how could we not appreciate her past actions with the snowball fight and Christmas? How could we not want to see this warm person grow up and be an adult? And to finally get her man? The one she loved as a kid. Amazing. Kellan grew up to be a pretty amazing person. Even if he was rather dumb to disappear like he did. The entire time, I kept thinking - why try to run? Why not utilize the huge support system you had within the Order? Cause I know that the Order would have tried to help. But I guess if that were to have happened, we wouldn't have gotten the book we did. *grin* Anyways, I'll just repeat: I loved this book. I cannot wait to continue with more books in this series. I'm so not sure which character I want to have a book next- perhaps Nathan?? But then we'd have to leap into the future even more so I'm not sure I want that. I want to continue with the way the plot could develop now, not necessarily have years occur between now and then. (Sorry for the ramble) Anyways, if you were a fan of the previous books, I'm sure you'll like this one. You might be like -'oh wow' at the end, but it won't be due to 'wtf??'. Mainly because in the previous books, this has been hinted at. The 'wow' will be because there's the chance to have even more books.
