“The way we see it, we are designed by profession to pick up the pieces, to clean up the dirty side of fighting Cancer.” – Corinne Martinez, owner of Wilderness Garbage. It’s the ugly side of the fight - the financial and emotional strain. Something CAN Cancer founders Corinne and Gil Martinez know firsthand. When their son, Stu, was diagnosed with throat cancer, the cost of travel to St. Charles from La Pine, and the everyday living expenses, mounted quickly. The Martinez family are winning their fight. Not all are as fortunate as the Martinez family. Survivors attest that fighting the disease requires every ounce of their emotional and physical strength. The chances for beating it drop significantly when energy is spent worrying about paying for the gas to travel to a treatment center or the expense of food bought to feed a tired immune system. It was the Martinez’ idea to develop a resource for helping families facing these challenges. Specifically, they wanted a local organization that ensured the money donated would be given directly back to local patients. The Central Oregon Haulers have partnered with the St. Charles Cancer Treatment Center to handle the distribution of aid to local cancer patients who need it most.

“We see patients everyday who struggle to afford their treatment, some forgo therapies because they can’t afford them. It is our hope that this fund will relieve some of the worry about the incidental cost of receiving care, so that these patients can focus on improving their health,” – Peggy Carey, St. Charles Cancer Program Director.

CAN Cancer is relying on the Central Oregon community and the Central Oregon Haulers’ customers to pitch in and give families a fighting chance. Without their donations, there will be no money to help.

“If each customer that the Central Oregon Haulers serves pitches in just one dollar or more, we’ll raise more than $65,000 for this cause,” said Martinez. “We’re asking these homeowners, these customers, to help us reach that goal so our community can fill a void where other programs and insurers fall short.”

CAN Cancer is a local appeal to provide community assistance for families fighting cancer. It provides financial support when the ability to maintain a job, a regular way of life, strips a patient’s capacity to survive…to afford to beat the disease. CAN Cancer was founded by the Martinez family, owners of Wilderness Garbage, in cooperation with Bend Garbage & Recycling, Cascade Disposal, High Country Disposal, and Madras Sanitary Service. All money donated will be used to help Central Oregon families cover non-medical expenses. Things like fuel, travel, and food costs that are not covered by insurance or other programs. Get Your Boat inspected Before opening weekend!

The Deschutes County Sheriff ’s Office will once again be conducting “preseason” boat inspections before the fishing opener on April 25th/26th. This is a chance for boat owners to get their boats out, ready and have a boating inspection decal applied to their boat before they ever hit the water. These parking lot inspections will take place on Saturday, April 18th, from 9am -3pm at the following locations: BEND: All Seasons RV and Marine (Jamison Street) SISTERS: Les Schwab REDMOND: Steve Dorn RV and Marine (South Hwy 97) LA PINE: Deschutes County Sheriff ’s Office substation (the old Midstate Electric on the south end of town) Marine deputies will check the safety equipment your boat is required to have on board and help ensure that boaters have everything they need for a safe boating season. Any problems can usually be fixed on the spot and no citations will be written. Once a boat has passed the safety inspection, a “2009” inspection sticker will be applied to the boat. This sticker is good for the rest of the 2009, is good around the state and reduces the chances of a boater being stopped on the water for a safety inspection. For further information, call 541-388-6503.

2009 relay For life seeking teams

The theme for the 2009 La Pine/Sunriver Relay for Life is “Cure Cancer Olympics”. This popular event, now in its seventh year, will be held June 27th and 28th at the La Pine High School track. CAN Cancer is a new, local appeal to provide community assistance to cover non-medical living expenses for Central Oregonians fighting all forms of cancer. CAN Cancer was established by Gil, Stu and Corinne Martinez of Wilderness Garbage in cooperation with the Central Oregon Haulers, a group of garbage and disposal companies including Bend Garbage & Recycling, Cascade Disposal, High Country Disposal, and Madras Sanitary Service. All the money donated will be used to help Central Oregon families pay for expenses such as fuel, travel, and food costs not covered by insurance or other programs.

“We’re asking these homeowners, these customers, to help us reach that goal so our community can fill a void where other programs and insurers fall short.” Starting March 25th, each of the Central Oregon Hauler businesses will send out a lavender envelope in their garbage billing statements. Residents who want to make a tax deductible donation can: 1. Send cash or a check in the self-addressed lavender envelope; 2. Fill out their credit card information on the lavender envelope for an automatic donation; Or, visit, click on the St. Charles logo, to donate online. Simply click “St. Charles Foundation” and then “Donate online now. Check “CAN Cancer” on the gift designation list to be sure your contribution goes straight to our fund.

SPINAL HEALTH COLUMN Spinal Health Tips and Information Provided By Gary Smith, D.C. Alpine Chiropractic Center La Pine and Bend Offices

536-3118 • 389-7616

Feel Good Again. Be Well Adjusted. It’s that time of year again. The time when we all begin to spend more hours in activities that require good health for energy, muscular coordination and general well being. As warm weather returns, young children spend more hours in active outdoor play; teenagers develop their skills; even adults become ambitious and play tennis, golf, walk, jog or, of course, do the inevitable yard work. As you and your family approach this active season, have you taken time to consider the adage, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”? If your family is like most, you follow the practice of regular medical and dental checkups. But have you considered the spinal care everyone needs? Today, more than ever before, there is increased mental and physical strain on our nerves and muscular systems. This can cause minor displacements at the spine which can develop into aches, pains and fatigue. If you plan ahead and get periodic chiropractic examinations and adjustments to preserve the health of yourself and your loved ones, then it won’t be necessary to go through the time-consuming process of restoring lost health. A little time wisely spent now can be much better than a lot of time painfully spent later. At both Alpine Chiropractic Center offices, we will be happy to see you and your family and can assure you of complete and proper chiropractic care. We can discuss any health problems you may have and give you a complete spinal checkup to prepare you for the active months ahead. SUBMIT YOUR FREE CLASSIFIED ADS TO WISE BUYS AT:

oregon Mandatory Boater education training

sponsored by the deschutes county sheriff ’s office In order to comply with Oregon’s Mandatory Boater Education law, in 2009, boat operators who will be operating a boat with a motor of more than 10 horsepower must complete some sort of recognized boater education training. This program applies to anyone operating a personal watercraft as well. There are a number of ways to do this; some include a small fee, others are free. The Deschutes County Sheriff ’s Office, in conjunction with the Oregon State Marine Board, will offer “equivalency exams” one night a month from March through October, 2009. This course: • Is free; • Lasts approximately three hours (somewhat less if there are less attendees); • Assumes that the person taking part has some prior boating experience and has studied the “Boat Oregon” book. (That book is available free at the main Sheriff ’s Office in Bend or any of their substations in La Pine, Terrebonne or Sisters; All Seasons RV and Marine and Central Lakes Marine in Bend, or Dorn RV and Marine in Redmond). • Upon the successful passage of a multi-choice test, attendees will receive all necessary paperwork to apply for and receive their Mandatory Boater Education card, which costs $10. Once a boat operator receives this card, it never needs to be renewed and there are no other costs associated with the Mandatory Boater Education process. It is NOT a license to operate a boat, as there is no such requirement in Oregon. Boaters are encouraged to take a copy of their card to their insurance carrier, as many companies offer a slight discount on boat insurance once you have obtained your card. Classes sponsored by the Deschutes County Sheriff ’s Office will take place at the main Sheriff ’s Office in Bend, located on at 63333 West Highway 20 (the Sisters highway) as you head west out of Bend. Unless otherwise noted, these classes will take place from 6pm to 9pm on the following dates; attendees need only attend one three-hour session, not all of them: • Friday, April 17th, 6pm-9pm • Saturday, May 16th, 9am-noon • Friday, May 29th, 6pm-9pm • Thursday, June 18th, 6pm-9pm • Thursday, July 16th, 6pm-9pm • Monday, August 24th, 6pm-9pm • Wednesday, September 23rd, 6pm-9pm • Friday, October 16th, 6pm-9pm If you live in another county, check with your local Sheriff ’s Office for training opportunities. Additional information can be obtained by logging onto the Internet at and clicking on the link, “Boating and Water Safety”. If you would like to register for one of these local sessions, or have additional questions, please call 541-388-6503 or 550-4856. Leave your name and phone number and someone will call to confirm your attendance. Additional training opportunities for a small fee are available at Joe’s (formerly GI Joe’s) in Bend, every Thursday night from 5:30p-8:30pm from March through October. Call 541-388-3770 for additional information.

Didn’t Find Your Sweetie This Valentine’s Day?? We have a very handsome young bachelor and a very eligible young lady who are looking for love and companionship... and most importantly, a FOREVER HOME!! (We do prefer they go together!) These two came from a terrible situation. They lived under a condemned meth house and were left to fend for themselves in squalor. Unfortunately, because their situation was so horrible and they weren’t properly cared for, they have both been diagnosed with Feline Leukemia. Although healthy and happy now (Obama has a little bit of a chronic snuffle tho!) their lifespan is unknown. But with proper care and nutrition and lots of needed TLC they can live long and HILLARY happy lives. OBAMA We understand that they may require more vet care than your usual pet, that’s why we will provide veterinary support for their lifetime so you don’t have to worry!! OBAMA is a large Maine Coon, all black, long hair. He’s an absolute love and is a great companion to people and takes great care of Hillary. He’s just a big lover boy! HILLARY is a sweet Blue Point Siamese. She had to have one eye removed due to an old trauma. She is a bit co-dependant on Obama (how can you blame her right?) But she will warm up to you as well!! They will both win your hearts over, that I promise you! Please call the clinic for more information at 617-1010.

Obama and Hillary are altered, vaccinated, dewormed and microchipped and they come with 2-25 pound bags of Science Diet Cat Food. Please call the clinic at 617-1010 for more information.

Comment Online For Jail Expansion Support

Deschutes County Commissioners are requesting Federal appropriations support to expand the Deschutes County Jail and are asking for your help. The Commissioners are asking County residents to make comments of support for jail expansion on Senator Ron Wyden’s website. According to a recent media release, the Senator will consider public support to help him make appropriations funding decisions for the year 2010. Because the Deschutes County Jail has reached capacity, inmates are routinely released before serving their full sentences. This practice compromises the public safety system in the County and directly places the public at risk. The expansion would increase the number of beds to 564 (including 90 beds in a remodeled work center) at a cost of $46 million. Jail expansion documents will be complete in June, making construction the next step in the process. At this time, the County does not have money to pay for jail expansion construction. However, Deschutes County already has funding available (through the permanent tax rate of the recently approved special law enforcement district) to fund the operation of the jail when it is expanded. “Appropriation dollars would significantly help with jail expansion construction costs, improving public safety for residents and adding new job opportunities that have already been approved by the voters,” said Sheriff Larry Blanton. Online steps to give your online support of the Deschutes County Jail expansion: 1. Please visit Senator Ron Wyden’s site at cfm 2. Half way down the Appropriations page, please click on “Commerce, Justice and Science (FY2010) 3. In the upper right hand section of the page, please click on “Share” 4. On the Appropriations Feedback page, please fill out the Views form with comments of support for Deschutes County Jail expansion funding 5. Suggested comments residents could make on the Senator’s website could be, “I support full appropriation funding for the expansion of the Deschutes County Jail located in Bend, Oregon. The project will improve public safety to citizens of the County and, once constructed, jail operation funds are already provided through a recently approved taxing district.” NEW JOBS CREATED: The County estimates the jail expansion construction project will create approximately 100 full-time positions for carpenters, ironworkers, concrete workers, masons, electricians, plumbers, glaziers, roofers, HVAC specialists, security specialists, painters, flooring installers, and landscapers. The expansion will lead to the creation of approximately 25 new family wage jobs for corrections deputies and support staff. The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office appreciates you taking the time to provide feedback to Senator Ron Wyden. “By commenting online, Oregonians can help play an important role in ensuring the most deserving requests are selected to compete for funding by the Senate Appropriations Committee,” said Senator Wyden’s Chief of Staff, Josh Kardon in a recent notice. For more information about making online comments to Senator Ron Wyden’s website or about the Deschutes County Jail expansion project, please call the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office at 388-6655.

The Tackle Box Fishing enthusiasts from ages past have always searched for the element to assist in the elusive, hard to find and harder to catch fish. Last week we mentioned the need for a good flasher to add to the effective lineup of lures. One is a traditional flasher known as the Ford Fender Lake Troll by Luhr-Jensen. The interesting thing about this flasher is that it was never originally fashioned from a fender, but from the reflective part of the 1930 Model A headlamp. We can envision Mr. Jensen looking at the shiny headlamp reflector and seeing the mother of invention give birth to yet another wonderful addition to the sport of fishing, creating a flasher from the crude curved features the bucket style headlamp offers. One of the best features the Ford Fender has is while it can cause an additional drag on the pole, at slower speeds the flasher is hard to beat for the action and the vibratory effect of the way it moves through the water to attract fish and ultimately get the strike. Traditionally the Ford Fender is one of the most widely known and used of the flasher family and this is partly because it is such a long-standing tried and true item with a trusted name in the fisherman’s tackle box. Colors and sizes again are an option offered with this lure. The perfect selection is determined by the size of the waters being fished and the type of fish you want to attract, as well as the conditions of the light and time of day. This flasher is renowned for bringing fish from farther and deeper than some of the other flashers that are available from the tackle shop. Rod choice can have an influence on the action of the lure due to the added drag the flasher can create. Some say that a rod with a firmer backbone can be a greater asset when using this flasher. The lure, when attached at a longer drop below the flasher, will make the action of the rod tip more able to react to the strike of the fish rather than a softer tip that can absorb the action of the flasher and diminish the action of the lure as well. Teaming with tradition and a rich history, the Luhr-Jensen Ford Fender Lake Troll flasher can be just the ticket when seeking the extra deep and the extra large fish. Who knows what can happen if you combine it with a downrigger and who can guess what great results are waiting for you, and the bragging rights to go with it. - The Friendly Fisherman

think Again Parents

substance Abuse Prevention team of south county The local TAPS team and the SISA (Students for the Improvement of Student Atmosphere- from La Pine High School) are getting ready to kick off a campaign called “Party Safe Homes”. What is Party Safe Homes? This is the beginning of an on-going process designed to seek solutions that will make parenting easier. Party Safe Homes is a parent network campaign based on the idea that the most effective way to stop a child from using alcohol and other drugs is to stop his or her friends from using them. When parents join together and take a united stand against alcohol and other drug use, they become much more effective than if they act separately. Parents are the BEST protection young people have against drug abuse. Party Safe Homes provides reinforcement and support when children pressure their parents with such statements as, “But everybody’s doing it!” and “I’ll be left out by all my friends if I can’t go!” We parents all to often lose sight of the fact that the family is still the single most powerful influence in our young people’s lives. Many of us are not using that influence. For a variety of reasons, we have surrendered parental power and influence to the youth peer groups, to alcohol and tobacco advertisers, to television, music and movies. As a result, today our youth face unchallenged intense societal pressures to use alcohol, tobacco and other drugs in order to fit in and to be accepted. Parents are the ones who ultimately MUST take a strong and visible stand if we hope to reverse current dangerous trends of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use by young people. Won’t you join us in these efforts? Will you make the pledge, along with other parents that you will not allow parties or gatherings in your home if you are not present? Will you pledge not to serve or willingly allow youth underage to consume alcohol in your home or on your property? Will you pledge to you will also not allow the use of illegal drugs in your home or property? For more info and to get involved, contact Cindy Oleache at La Pine High school, 322-5360 or Mary Fleischmann at 536-5002. DEADLINE 3PM THURSDAY FoR FoLLoWING TUESDAYS WISE BUYS PUBLICATIoN

at the Humane Society of Central Oregon The Humane Society of Central Oregon joined the American Humane Association on April 4, 2009 to kick off the “Every Day is Tag Day” campaign to help animal lovers understand the importance of identification for their pets. A low cost

microchip clinic will be held at the Humane Society of Central Oregon (61170 SE 27th St, Bend) on Saturday April 25th and custom identification tags will be sold at cost through April at the shelter. Adopters can purchase

designer ID tags at half of the sale price at the time of adoption. Whether a pet is lost by accident or separated from you by a disaster, a microchip and ID tag will help reunite you with your pet quickly and safely. The Humane Society of Central Oregon is holding a microchip identification clinic on Saturday, April 25th from 10:00am to 2:00pm. The purpose of

the clinic is to highlight the importance of identification on family pets. Microchip

implants, including registration will be provided for only $20 at the Bend animal shelter on 27th Street. Dogs must be on a leash and cats in a crate. For more

information, call 382-3537.

The Bend shelter received 2,138 lost animals in 2008. If every animal had current identification the Humane Society could quickly reunite people with their pets. Micro chipping your dog or cat provides a permanent identification that cannot be lost, altered or intentionally removed. It is a safe, simple and inexpensive way to protect your pet against loss or theft. The microchip is the size of a grain of rice. The chip is inserted between the shoulder blades like a vaccination. The Humane Society of Central Oregon is located at 61170 SE 27th Street in Bend, just south of Reed Market Road. For more information, call 382-3537 or visit 61170 SE 27th Street Bend OR 97702 541-382-3537

April 28 is the last day to register to vote. May 1 is the day ballots will be mailed from the Bend Post office. The list of district positions open for the May Special Election is available at under the Current Election tab. For more info call 388-6544.

Central Oregon Partnerships for Youth (COPY), a program of the Deschutes County Sheriff ’s Office, is offering a class to prepare volunteers to become mentors for children with an incarcerated parent. It is estimated that, on any given day, 350 kids in Deschutes County are dealing with the disruptive effects of parental incarceration. “We know from research, children with an incarcerated parent are at significantly higher risk of becoming involved in the criminal justice system,” explains Larry Blanton, Deschutes County Sheriff. “Our agency is committed to providing alternatives to incarceration. Mentoring these kids today will result in fewer people incarcerated down the line.” COPY aims to break this cycle by connecting these children with safe and appropriate mentors. After initial training and background checks, volunteers are matched with a child who shares similar interests and activities and commits to spending a few hours a week together for a minimum of one year. This time is often spent going to community events, working on homework, attending art programs, participating in sports, or simply hanging out and talking. On Saturday, April 18, COPY will offer a training class in Bend. Upon completing the class and background checks, volunteers are able to be matched with a child living in their local community. This six-hour class covers program policies, how to establish a mentor relationship, the impact incarceration has on families, and communication skills. There is no cost to attend, but an application is required. For additional details or to request an application, please call 388-6651 or email COPY@ . Additional program information is available online at www.

Baby Chicks May Pose a Salmonella Threat Proper Handling Advised

As spring approachs, local and state health officials warn of the potential Salmonella bacteria chicks, ducklings and other young fowl can carry. According to the Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS), these animals may not be appropriate as pets for children younger than five or for persons with weakened immune systems. DHS also states that Salmonella poisoning from baby poultry purchased as pets or for backyard flocks represents an ongoing public health concern and causes multiple hospitalizations each year. Two cases have been identified in Oregon over the past few weeks; both had contact with young poultry. Both patients are recovering. Many chicks carry Salmonella bacteria in their intestinal tract and intermittently or continuously shed these bacteria in their feces. Salmonella bacteria often may not cause any illness in chicks, but can cause serious illness in people. Salmonella bacteria are easily spread from chicks to humans. Humans may become infected when they place their hands on objects that have been in contact with the stool of chicks, and then touch food that they eat. For Salmonella bacteria to spread from chicks to humans, the bacteria must be ingested. Therefore, simply touching or holding a chick will not result in spread of bacteria unless something contaminated with chick feces or the chick itself is placed in the mouth. Most Salmonella infections in humans result in a mild, self-limiting illness characterized by diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. However, the infection can spread to the bloodstream, bone marrow or nervous system, leading to severe and sometimes fatal illness. Such severe infections are more likely to occur in infants and in individuals whose immune system is compromised (for instance, bone marrow transplant recipients, people with diabetes mellitus or those infected with the human immunodeficiency virus, and chemotherapy patients). Fortunately, the spread of Salmonella bacteria from chicks to humans can be easily prevented by using the following routine precautions: • Always wash your hands with hot, soapy water after handling chicks, chick cages and equipment, and the stool of chicks. • Keep chicks penned in outside buildings. Always wash your hands after coming into contact with any area where chicks are kept. • Do not eat, drink, or smoke while handling chicks, chick cages, or chick equipment. Do not kiss chicks or share food or drink with them. • Children less than five years of age should avoid contact with chicks. Children should be supervised when they are handling chicks to ensure that they do not place their hands, or objects that a chick has contacted, in their mouths. Chicks should not be kept in childcare centers. • Immune-compromised people should avoid contact with chicks. • Follow instructions from your veterinarian concerning proper diet and environment for your chick(s). Healthy chicks living in proper environments are less likely to shed Salmonella bacteria. This information is not meant to discourage chick or poultry ownership. With a few exceptions (for example, infants or immune-compromised individuals), most people have a low risk of acquiring Salmonella from chicks. This risk, however, can be reduced even further by following simple precautions. Purchasers of chicks should be aware of the methods for reducing their risk of acquiring Salmonella bacteria from poultry. For more information about the risk of Salmonella illness, please call Deschutes County Health Services at 322-7400.

Friends of the sunriver Area library Present: Flair cAYA – come As You Art exhibit

April 26-June 26, 2009 Reception: Sunday, May 3, 2009, 2-4pm. Artists Presentations 2:30pm. CAYA, a central Oregon group of area artists joined creative forces several years ago. This collection of talented people has an array of media that are complimentary. As a group they inspire each other. While each artist pursues individual methods of creating and selling their work at least once a year, they join forces in collaborative effort. The troupe selects a private gallery, hires musicians and turns the event of sharing art into a creative expression. This year there will be a number of showings in the area. Susan Harkness-Williams works in mixed media and gourds. She incorporates inlaid stone, relief carvings, pyrography, acrylics and inks and any number of found objects into her work. Her art experience coupled with her inquisitive mind always combines new methods and mediums together and keeps it interesting to her as an artist. Jennifer Gold’s exquisite art is full of vibrancy and is always captivating to view. She hopes to win new enthusiasts when her work is displayed at the Sunriver Library. Diane Miyauchi finds her creative outlet in clay. Her unique style of ceramics delight and captivates viewers. Each hand built piece is inspired by her surroundings. Judy Seaman expresses herself in acrylics and carved block prints. Her surroundings evokes strong feelings that she translates into tangible pieces of art. Her paintings possess rich colors and unique abstract forms which often enhance the dimensional effects. When she works in ceramics she hand builds each piece finishing with various techniques. Her inspirations for her block prints come from nature and some of these she carves while others are created using a press technique. Kim Jones’ contemporary acrylic paintings are dramatic with rich earthy tones and vibrant hues. She combines colors in such a way as to evoke feelings of comfort and pleasure. Kim often paints in a large scale which comes from her years as a muralist and they have a rustic, organic beauty about them. She paints still lifes as well as landscapes and abstracts. At 2:30pm during the reception on Sunday, May 3, 2009, artists Susan Harkness- Williams and Jennifer Gold will present a program. Susan will explain her gourd carving tools and technique. Jennifer will give background and inspirations for her designs. The public is cordially invited to attend. Contact: Carolyn Waissman, 541-593-3965, cwaissman@chamberscablecom
