Kenpo (Karate)

Kenpo (Karate) is the art of self-defense that protects the human rights derived from God. Physically, Kenpo is an art of self-defense, mentally it is a defensive study that cultivates the explicitness of serenity and tranquility which promotes the betterment of personality and mind. Spiritually, with the understanding of discipline through austerity, the coordination of mind and body function to create a better self. In the physical of Kenpo, the student is bound to humility and self-restraint. The Ken-Ju-Bo-Ai association is a family and this is something our society desperately needs. Tim Murphy is the instructor at the La Pine School. He started Kenpo almost 8 years ago when his 2 youngest children showed an interest in it. He thought it would be a positive family. Now those 2, Michelle and Justin, assist in teaching the classes. Tim takes his roles as father, Kenpo instructor and mentor very seriously. He has seen the positive impact the art has on all who are involved. Joe Pace is the instructor at the Gilchrist School. He, too, is very committed to the art. This is a non-profit organization. Tim gives it his all. He never misses a class. They meet two times weekly. He would like to encourage all ages to get involved. It is beneficial, mentally and physically. He reminds his students to set their goals high and believe in themselves. One of his goals was to earn his black belt, which he recently received at 50+ years old. What an accomplishment! If interested, call Tim Murphy of the La Pine School at 541-350-7872 or Joe Pace of the Gilchrist School at 541-419-7975.

COCC Nursing Program Offers Orientation In Redmond Answers to last week’s puzzle. 

Central Oregon Community College’s nursing department is offering an orientation session at 9am on Thursday, October 29, in Room 305 of the Building 3 on the COCC Redmond campus. The purpose of the meeting is to review the selection procedure for students interested in applying to COCC’s Associate of Applied Science in Nursing program as well as the prerequisites for applying and support courses necessary for the AAS degree. It is not necessary to be enrolled at COCC to attend this orientation, and reservations are not needed. However, admission into COCC’s Nursing program requires in-district residency. Contact the Admissions and Records Office at 541-383-7500 for details. Currently, COCC’s nursing program admits about 36 students each spring to begin fall-term course work. The admission process allows the nursing students to begin the program as a cohesive group, provide faculty members more opportunities for student interaction and offer more continuity within the program. For information, call 541-383-7214.
