Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune condition of the neuromuscular system and occurs when there is an insufficient amount of acetylcholine (ACh) receptors at the point where nerve meets muscle, resulting in weakened muscle contraction. ACh is a neurotransmitter that is involved in muscle contraction. Specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies aimed at the ACh receptors are responsible for the receptor deficit. An abnormality of the thymus gland also may be involved. Muscles of the eyes and eyelids are affected initially. Double vision is a common symptom. Speech, smiling, chewing, and swallowing also may be impacted. Although there is currently no cure for the condition, effective treatments are available. The anticholinesterase medication pyridostigmine (Mestinon, Regonol) works to prevent the destruction of ACh, leading to improvements in muscle contraction. Immunosuppressive medications such as cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune) or tacrolimus (Prograf) may be prescribed for improvement of weakness. Prednisone, a glucocorticoid, may be prescribed in combination with these immunosuppressive medications. Surgical removal of the thymus gland may be recommended in adolescents and adults.

Heat Precautions For Pets The Humane Society of Central Oregon would like to offer tips on keeping your pet safe in the heat. With the temperatures predicted to continue in the low 90 degrees Fahrenheit for the next few days, the best spot for your pet is inside a safe, cool house. • If your pet is outside during the day, remember to provide protection from the sun and plenty of fresh water. Remember that older, short muzzle and overweight dogs are more likely to overheat during hot weather. You can provide a wading pool to aid in cooling. • Leaving your pet in a parked car can be a deadly mistake. The temperature inside a car can reach 120 degrees in a few minutes. Even partially open windows won’t protect your pet from heatstroke. • Exercise your dog in the morning or evening when temperatures and pavement are cool. The paw pads can get injured from the hot pavement and melted tar can get stuck to pad and hair. Pets need exercise but do it in the cooler hours of the day. • Dogs in truck beds can suffer injury or heat stroke. Veterinarians know all too well dogs that have fallen out of the truck bed which resulted in severely injured dogs or motor vehicle accidents from people swerving to avoid the dog. If you cannot touch the hot truck bed with your bare hand, your dog should not be on the hot metal. Debris from the road damages eyes. “Every year the Humane Society of Central Oregon warns people to keep their pets safe from the dangers of warm temperatures,” says Karen Burns, shelter manager. “Unfortunately, every year we hear of animals needlessly suffering from heat stroke. When summer heat hits the City of Bend animal control receive four to eight calls per day regarding dogs left in hot cars.” The Humane Society of Central Oregon has posters available for businesses and car windshield flyers that educate people on the dangers of leaving pets in hot cars. The educational flyers list the warning signs of a pet suffering from heat exhaustion or stroke. The Humane Society of Central Oregon is located one mile south of Reed Market Road on 27th Street in Bend. The shelter is open Monday through Friday, 10:00am to 5:30pm and Saturday, 10:00am to 5:30pm. For more information call the Humane Society of Central Oregon at 541-382-3537 or visit www.hsco.org.

Some plants we know can be toxic to your dogs, such as poinsettias and rhododendrons, but an invasive weed we have in Oregon, called cheat grass, can cause just as much discomfort to your pet as other toxic plants. Cheat grass is an annual weed that sprouts its spindle-like seeds in spring and fall; it is very hardy, and flammable. The seeds of cheat grass can be the culprits of sores in your dogs ears, paws, nose, mouth, skin, and if ingested, internally. The structure of the seed gives it the ability to burrow into your dog’s skin or the pad of their paw and between the toes, causing infection and discomfort. Most cheat grass seeds have to be removed by a veterinarian because of their barbed qualities. Attempting to pull them out without sedation equates pulling a fish hook out backwards. Prevent your dog from getting some of these nasty seeds, by mowing the grass or using weed killer that is safe for pets, keeping your dog away from fields of the grass is also a good strategy. Check your dog for the seeds daily, and remove them from the coat right away, before they have a chance to become a problem!

NEW De-Shedding Treatment uses OXY de-shed conditioner that contains oatmeal, alpha-hydroxy, B vitamins and omega-3s to help hair follicles release excess hair, the conditioner is blown through the coat to remove the undercoat, the bath and conditioner is followed by a brush out using special de-shedding combs and rakes. Now available to daycare or boarding dogs, our NEW Agility Train n' Play is one-on-one time with a staff member going over basic agility equipment and learning body awareness exercises that all incorporate basic obedience and manners. What Exactly Is A Red Flag Warning? The National Weather Service issues Red Flag Warnings & Fire Weather Watches to alert fire agencies of the onset, or possible onset, of critical weather and dry conditions that could lead to rapid or dramatic increases in wildfire activity. During these times extreme caution is urged by all residents, because a simple spark can cause a major wildfire. A Red Flag Warning is the highest forecast warning issued by the National Weather Service to warn of conditions that are ideal for wildland fire ignition and propagation. When humidity is very low, wildland fuels are extremely dry and when high winds are accompanied with multiple lightning strikes, the Red Flag Warning becomes a critical statement for firefighting agencies, which often alter their staffing and equipment resources dramatically to accommodate the forecast risk. To the public, a Red Flag Warning means high fire danger with increased probability of a quickly spreading vegetation fire in the area within 24 hours. A separate but less imminent forecast may include a Fire Weather Watch, which is issued to alert fire and land management agencies to the possibility that Red Flag conditions may exist beyond the first forecast period (12 hours). The watch is issued generally 12 to 48 hours in advance of the expected conditions, but can be issued up to 72 hours in advance if the National Weather Service is reasonably confident. The weather criteria for fire weather watches and red flag warnings varies with each Weather Service Office’s warning area based on the local vegetation type, topography, and distance from major water sources but usually includes the daily vegetation moisture content calculations, expected afternoon high temperature, afternoon minimum relative humidity and daytime wind speed and/or the prediction of lightning. Project Wildfire reminds residents to be prepared this fire season by creating and maintaining defensible space around their properties. For additional tips, residents can visit www.projectwildfire.org or www.firefree.org. For more information contact the Project Wildfire office at 541-322-7129.

Lecture About Human Origins The third of seven lectures in the “How Did We Get Here? Human Origins, Evolution and Migrations” series is set for 6:30pm on Wednesday, July 18, in Hitchcock Auditorium in Pioneer Hall on Central Oregon Community College’s Bend Campus. The series highlights cutting-edge anthropological research and discoveries. The lecture, “Kelp Forests, Estuaries, Mangroves, and Coral Reefs: The Ecology of Coastal Migrations by Anatomically Modern Humans,” will be presented by Jon Erlandson, executive director of the Museum of Natural and Cultural History at the University of Oregon. Erlandson is a key figure among a group of anthropologists who have been building a growing case for early migrations of “first peoples” to the Americas via a coastal versus inland route at the end of the last ice age. Dubbed the “Kelp Highway Hypothesis,” this new view of how people moved into both North and South America is not necessarily an “either/or” scenario. It raises the possibility of multiple migrations to the Americas from the Asian continent, a view supported by evidence from linguistics and genetics. Erlandson has been a professor of archaeology at the University of Oregon since 1990 and was appointed executive director of the Museum of Natural and Cultural History in 2005. In addition to working at the museum and teaching classes in the department of anthropology, Erlandson has done field research in coastal California, Oregon, Alaska and Iceland. His interests focus on the development of maritime societies, human evolution and migrations and the peopling of the Americas. He has written and edited 16 books, published more than 200 scholarly articles and serves as coeditor of the Journal of Island and Coastal Archaeology. For information, call 541-383-7257. Tickets are $10 general admission; $8 Sunriver Nature Center members; $3 students with ID. Advance sales from the Sunriver Nature Center: 541-593-4394 or 541-593-4442, or purchase at the door. There are limited free student tickets available by contacting email@example.com. The series is sponsored by the Nancy R. Chandler Visiting Scholar Program, the Sunriver Nature Center & Observatory, Safeco Insurance, Beecher and Carlson Insurance and the Museum of Natural and Cultural History with support from the student governments of COCC and OSU-Cascades.

Underage Drinking Prevention Grant Awarded
The Deschutes County Children & Families Commission (CFC) is happy to announce that their grant application for Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws was approved. A total of $12,000 will be awarded to enhance the community of Redmond’s approach to enforcing underage drinking laws. With the funds, the community will be able to implement additional hours of underage drinking enforcement to help curb parties where underage drinking occurs. In addition, advertising will increase for the anonymous Crime Stoppers tip line. Alcohol is the most prevalent substance used by Redmond area minors. Youth who drink are more likely to become alcohol dependent later in life. The tip line is a partnership between Crime Stoppers and TAPS, and can be used to report drug or alcohol issues throughout Deschutes County. Please use the number to report planned or active underage drinking parties. Callers may remain anonymous and tips may bring cash rewards. 24-Hour Toll Free Call: 877-976-TIPS (8477) or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.

“We are the hub of the business community, promoting commerce and tourism making La Pine a vibrant community to work, live and play!”
MELALEUCA, THE WELLNESS COMPANY – Owner: Karen Spradling So, Karen, when did you open your business? I started my Melaleuca business three and a half years ago. I had left a full time job and was looking for something to do from home. I fell in love with the company and their products. Are you the main player at your business or are their others involved? I work as a Marketing Executive with the company. I show customers how to shop for better safer products that are green and I partner with others who want to start a business they can work from home. I have a great team of moms, who want to work from home, they keep me busy.
Why do you work, live and play in La Pine? I live in OWW II and decided that I would get involved in the community of La Pine, I have been so impressed with the strong commitment to community from the local merchants and organizations that I have come in contact with.
What is the potential for growth for your business? All of our products are earth friendly and green. Everyone is looking for ways to be environmentally responsible. We make it easy for them to switch from chemical based products to green products. There is unlimited potential when a business like mine is focused on helping people create health and wellness. What is your business's greatest challenge? "Getting the word out is the biggest challenge." We are a “word of mouth” advertising business. I am in the business of talking to people about our products and business opportunity.
What is the biggest highlight of your career? Two things: One is having a business partner call because they are excited by the check they just received. And Two: helping people improve their health. When they have healthy products in their home and they remove the toxic products, their health and that of their family will often improve.
What do you do to relax? I fish. I love to fly fish and lake fish with my husband Chuck. And I am a quilter. We also Dutch Oven cook for friends and family. Tell us something about yourself that few people know about: "Years ago I was a Farmers insurance agent."
In terms of volunteering in the community, what is your personal contribution to the community? Most of my outside the home working career has focused around recreation and education of children. My husband Chuck and I have always volunteered and are sure we will find many opportunities in La Pine. I am also a new Ya Ya!
What are your plans for the future? I want to continue to move my business forward, to help other people. I find it very satisfying! We also like to travel and explore new areas, visit family & friends and new fishing holes. What advice would you give to community leaders? "I am so new here that I would like to reserve my thoughts for later down the road!"
Do you have a mission? "To enhance the lives of those I touch by helping people reach their goals. I asked her what she meant. She said. “I value health above all other things. If we don't have our health, where are we? I can make a difference and I intend to do so."

Preparedness Tips For Pets During Wildfire Season As the wildfires rage out of control in Colorado, Central Oregonians are reminded to be prepared for an emergency evacuation. The Humane Society of Central Oregon offers tips for families with pets. Plan in advance of what you will do in an emergency. Many evacuations shelters do not accept pets, so plan in advance where you will go. Ask family and friends outside the area if you can stay with them temporarily with your pet(s). Have a list of motels that accept pets. Make sure identification tags and microchip implants have your mobile phone number listed. Network with neighbors so they can remove your pet(s) quickly if you are not home. Be prepared with an evacuation pet kit. Assemble in a tote bag or pet crate a three day supply of food, water, medications and cat litter. Make sure everyone knows where the kit is so they can find it quickly. Your pet evacuation kit should include: Photos: Quality photos of face and profile for identification in case you get separated. Know breed description and distinguishing characteristics. Photo of you and your pet to document ownership; First aid kit & guide book; 3 day food and water supply (rotate and keep fresh); Medications; Litter tray - small plastic or disposable (gift boxes left flat); Food dishes; Cable tie out and extra leash; Harness; Blanket or sheet for bed and/or to assist with injured or fearful pet; Toys for distraction and comfort; Copy of vet records; Veterinarian phone number - put in cell phone & leave in kit. Secure your pet inside during the first sign of a storm or disaster. They can get stressed, confused & disoriented. For horses and livestock, assemble a similar evacuation kit. To identify your horse, take photos of any identifying marks, tattoos or brands. Photograph all angles of your horse, and include yourself in the photo to help confirm ownership. Have your horse microchipped and/or have a breakaway collar with ID tag handy. You can write your phone number on large animals with a livestock crayon or grease pen, paint or even shave a phone number into the hair. Make sure your trailer is in good working condition. If you do not have a trailer, arrange in advance with people from different areas to have your horse trailered in case of an emergency. Have a list of people with temporary pasture or stable space for your horse(s). For small animals, birds & reptiles have a secure carrying case or cage and include appropriate food and care supplies. For more information about disaster preparedness, visit www.hsco.org or the Humane Society of Central Oregon at 61170 SE 27th Street in Bend.

541-536-2930 Now Is The Time To Prepare For Wildfire And Evacuation Over the last few weeks, we in Central Oregon have watched in sadness as the media portrays the shocking devastation left in the wake of record-breaking fires across Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and other states across the west. Thousands of homes have been lost, thousands more have been evacuated. There is no shortage of footage of people exclaiming through tears that they had to evacuate immediately, with no time to prepare. These sad accounts provide eye-opening, teachable moments for us here in central Oregon. Temperatures are finally rising, bringing us warmer days for summertime activities. “These warmer days will also dry out our landscape quickly, leaving grasses, shrubs and trees extremely vulnerable to sparks and fire,” says Katie Lighthall, Director of Project Wildfire. A lightning or human-caused fire can spread rapidly to homes and neighborhoods, quickly turning our community into another sad news story. “The key to your home surviving a wildfire and your family’s successful evacuation is being PREPARED,” adds Lighthall. It is important to note that preparing for an emergency occurs in advance of the emergency itself. The greatest risk of homes catching fire during a wildland fire event is from the embers that reach your property long before an actual flame front. The Waldo Fire in Colorado Springs is demonstrating this phenomenon well. “High winds whipped embers beyond the flame front to land in gutters, on decks, in vents, and in flammable vegetation, soon igniting and burning down the homes,” says Lighthall. “There simply are not enough fire personnel or resources to post a truck at each home, so it’s up to individual homeowners to take responsibility for the defensible space around their homes,” she adds. Prepare your home against the threat of wildfire by creating and maintaining defensible space in the 30-100 feet around your home in the “Home Ignition Zone”. • Clean gutters and roof valleys from debris like pine needles and leaves. • Reduce shrubs and weeds that provide a path for fire to reach your trees or home. • Remove combustibles (weeds, needles, toys, furniture) on your deck or patio, or near your fence. • Move wood piles at least 20 feet away from your home or other combustibles. Prepare your family for evacuation by keeping a 72-hour kit in your car throughout fire season. Include a supply of water, clothing, food, necessary medications, important papers and other necessary items to last you and your family three days if you are evacuated from your home (www.ready.gov ). Register cell phones with Deschutes County’s Citizen Alert program to alert you of any evacuations to your neighborhood even if you’re not at home. (http://www.deschutes.org/9-1-1-Service-District/Citizen-EmergencyNotification-System-%28CENS%29.aspx ) “There are many similarities between Central Oregon and the areas involved in major fires in Colorado, Utah and New Mexico including an abundance of dry vegetation and strong winds that can quickly turn into a similar disaster here,” reminds Lighthall. “With an easy amount of preparation, our community members can avoid the devastation of a wildfire and evacuations here,” she adds. For additional tips, residents can visit www.firefree.org or www.firewise.org. For more information please contact the Project Wildfire office at 541-322-7129.

License Your Dog And Save A Hefty Fine! Did you know it is a Deschutes County and State requirement that all dogs that have permanent canine teeth or are six months old-whichever comes first-are required to be licensed? A violation of the County Code can set dog owners back $287 for each dog that is not licensed – OUCH! A dog license is affordable ($12 for spayed or neutered dogs, and $27 for a dog that has not been altered) and gives dog owners peace of mind – dog licensing improves the chance that a lost pet will be reunited with its’ owner. Licensing your dogs also make for a safer community. Before a license can be issued to a dog owner, there is a requirement that the dog has received a rabies vaccination. Other benefits of dog licensing are: A license tells everyone that your pet is not a homeless stray and that the owner cares enough to register the pet legally. Your dog is less likely to be taken to the local humane society; A portion of dog licensing fees is distributed to either the Central Oregon or Redmond Humane Societies, depending on where you live; Dog licensing is the law. Under Oregon Statute 609.100 and Deschutes County Code, all dogs in Deschutes County that meet the age requirement must be licensed. A violation of the law could cost you anywhere from $250 to $372 per unlicensed dog. It’s easy! Seven local veterinarians (below), Central Oregon and Redmond Humane Societies, and the Deschutes County Finance Office (1300 NW Wall Street in Bend, 2nd Floor) can sell you dog licenses. Cinder Rock Veterinary Clinic, 2630 S. Canal, Redmond; Companion Pet Clinic of Bend, 3197 N. Hwy. 97, A-1, Bend; Deschutes Veterinary Clinic, 25 NW Olney Ave., Bend; La Paw Animal Hospital,1288 SW Simpson Ave., Bend; Blue Sky Vet Clinic, 20205 Powers Road, Bend; Bend Spay & Neuter Project, 910 SE Wilson Ave., Suite B1, Bend; Bend Veterinary Clinic, 360 NE Quimby Ave., Bend. THE TACKLE BOX
This week I have a little special for you who are looking for a quick and easy peek in on some lure ideas for the over-all fishing enthusiast who wants to cover several bases and yet not be wishing for another lure to use in a specific situation. Rapala has a little blurb on their website that is a great insight to what you would need, for certain conditions, however I liked the one for the Alaska trip, simply based on the lure choices they presented. We could use them here on the high lakes just as easily to entice Browns, and other trout species to the bite. Blue Fox Vibrax spinners are a great choice for larger to smaller trout species and the number 3 would be great for smaller lake fishes, but if you are after larger quarry, then you can use up to the number 5 Vibrax spinners which come in a semi-large variety of colors and styles depending on lake and fisherman preferences. Spoons are always a favorite and quite versatile, depending on what you are fishing for, they can be the one go to lure that will cross over to many applications of fishing the easiest. The traditional Thomas Lure is a prime example; however, the Rapala site chose the Blue Fox spinner series for the Alaska Emergency Kit they are promoting. Warts are another great choice if you want a more traditional looking lure to use, and again, size of fish greatly dictates the size and style of the lure. The article is pushing the Storm Wiggle Wart, or the Mag Wart, and either of these are a great choice. I have preferences to the Storm Wart, simply based on shape. I like it better, but there are applications where the Mag Wart would work better, and depth of the fishing water can decide which lure would work better for which one to use. Fishing conditions and locations are so different, and what you catch fish on one day, won’t even cause a strike another day. So having a good variety of fishing lures on hand is always a great way to cover all the bases you can, but if you are limited on space, then you may consider going with a few of the basics, and go back to the traditional lures that are time tested, and fish proven. Rapala has a wonderful line of lures for choices. Finding the one that will be best to you is some of the most fun that you can have as a fisherman wanting to outfit your tackle box. FISH ON!!! Klamath Crisis Center The Klamath Crisis Center has a working outreach for help to domestic and/ or sexual violence victims. We have a thorough network of volunteers for immediate transport to safety from North Klamath County. It is said that the definition of insanity is “Doing the same thing over and over and over and over, BUT expecting different results?” If you want a change, you must first admit the problem and then find out what options you have. It is called informed consent. We encourage you to get information, even if you don’t act on it right now. If you are staying in a violent relationship, aren’t you consenting already? Just want to talk? Need to make a safety plan? Want to know your options? Wish you could build a healthy life for you and your kids? Think your relationship is toxic? Feel fearful and confused by your partner’s behavior? Need information from a confidential source? The North Klamath County Outreach for the Klamath Crisis Center is a no-cost support organization. We are here for you and will help you get safe and stay safe. We are also scheduling community presentations for the www.datesafeproject.org and self-empowerment sessions. If you or someone you know is in crisis call 1-800-452-3669. For more info call Renee Kapp at 541-433-2044.
