3rd Annual Butte Burner Charity Run/Walk At Pilot Butte State Park Local nonprofits Not Alone and Pilot Butte Partners are hosting the 3rd annual Butte Burner charity race for Central Oregon athletic enthusiasts of all ages and levels at Pilot Butte State Park on June 15th, 2013. What is the Butte Burner Charity Run/Walk? On Saturday June 15th, 2013, the Butte Burner (www.butteburner.com) will be held at Pilot Butte State Park in Bend, OR. This one-of-a-kind event has a 5k, 10k, kids k, and 3:33 Challenge on Pilot Butte’s trail and road system in the heart of Bend. This race was previously called the 3Thirty3, but still includes the original 3:33 Challenge run/walk event up and down Pilot Butte for 3 hours and 33 minutes. Last year’s 2nd annual event was a great success with over 200 participants, almost double the participants from the race’s inaugural year. All proceeds equally benefit both Not Alone and Pilot Butte Partners. The event provides an immense opportunity to rally our community to engage in significant efforts to help vulnerable youth escape human trafficking and for preservation and enhancement efforts at Pilot Butte State Park. Who is Not Alone™? Not Alone™ is a nonprofit organization committed to combating human trafficking and modern day slavery. Specifically, this organization focuses on the prevention of the commercial sexual exploitation of youth in Oregon. Who is Pilot Butte Partners? Pilot Butte Partners is a nonprofit focused on enhancement, preservation, and maintenance of the Pilot Butte State Park area in Bend. Future efforts are focused on continued trail & park maintenance, enhancements to the summit area, and repairing or repaving the road to the summit to improve pedestrian and vehicle safety. How can YOU help these nonprofits get the support they need? People can choose to run or walk one of the races, or businesses can sponsor the event at the Corporate level ($500) or higher to receive race entries and business recognition. Prizes will be awarded in all categories. All children participating in the kids’ k will be flooded with free swag provided by local businesses! We have a complimentary after-race party at the bottom with live music, food, drinks, and beer provided by Worthy Brewing. You won’t want to miss out on the fun!

4-Wheeling With A Goal: Groundhog Rock Crawl Competition June 19, 2013 Your participation is greatly appreciated by Deschutes County 4 Wheelers. The monies raised by the rock crawl event supports Deschutes County 4 Wheelers’ efforts to partner with the state and federal agencies to keep, maintain and build trails for stock 4x4s and their modified little brothers and sisters. The National Forest’s Travel Management Plan closes all of our level 1 trails; money to fund new trails and maintain the few trails we do have is very important to all of the groups of outdoorsmen and women who access their public lands. ‘Matched funding’ by Deschutes County 4 Wheelers’ volunteer hours of labor, equipment and time help to facilitate ATV Federal and State funded projects. The future Rim Butte OHV system and the current Santiam Pass Summer Motorized Vehicle Area (Quack Attack), Edison Trails, Cline Butte Recreational Area, Christmas Valley Sand Dunes and the dunes and beaches on the Oregon Coast are just a few of our projects. The monies raised by the event Groundhog Rock Crawl are immediately put into the trail fund and are utilized to further DC4W’s efforts in maintaining access to public lands for all users. Let’s Pull Together Let’s Pull Together will be held in Bend, Redmond, La Pine on Saturday, June 8th and Sisters event will take place on Saturday, June 15th, from 9:00am-12:00pm. Let’s Pull Together is a noxious weed eradication event consisting of collaborative partnerships with city and county governments, park, school and irrigation districts, neighborhood and homeowners associations, the forest service and state parks, local businesses and our incredible volunteers all join together for good times and clean country (city) living. Why pull noxious weeds you ask? Noxious weeds are non-native invasive species which threaten our ecosystem. They not only crowd out native plants, but they starve wildlife, use water and create allergens. Noxious weeds also provide tremendous ladder fuel which during wildfires can radically change the speed and fury at which wildfires burn. And yes...they are trying to take over Oregon! How to get involved: Bring your weeding tool of choice, your friends, your family, your group and join in. Meet us at any one of our locations on June 8. The site coordinators and on-site noxious weed experts will assist you in identifying native plants and noxious weeds. Sites are “family friendly” for children of all ages, and for adult of all physical ability levels. Our weed pull event will be followed by a celebration for our hardworking volunteers! Festivities are free for all volunteers! Bend Festivities: Noon at the Westside Venue in the Old Mill District. The Westside Venue is on the west side of the river at the footbridge in the Old Mill District. Relax and enjoy music by Boxcar String Band, lunch from Cafe Yumm, and refreshing beverages. Prizes will be awarded to volunteers right after lunch! Please check our website to find a specific site location near you! http://www.letspulltogether.com

Reminder: Rabies Vaccination Important For Cats/Dogs Oregon health officials are reporting that a bat found dead inside a residence in Medford recently tested positive for rabies, according to Oregon State University’s Veterinary Diagnostics Laboratory in Corvallis. This is the first bat in Oregon to test positive for rabies in 2013. Last year, 14 bats (one in Jackson County), and three foxes (one in Jackson County) tested positive for rabies in Oregon. Each year, approximately 10 percent of bats tested are found to have rabies. People can take two precautions to protect themselves and their pets from bats and rabies, said Dr. Emilio DeBess, public health veterinarian in the Oregon Health Authority, Public Health Division. “Never handle bats; and make sure your cats and dogs are up to date on their rabies vaccines,” he said. “Unfortunately, bats carry rabies. If you find a bat during the daylight hours, it is probably not healthy and should be avoided.” Rabies is a viral disease of mammals that attacks an infected animal’s nervous system. The rabies strain found in the Oregon foxes is from bats. Other strains of rabies found in the U.S. (skunk and raccoon) are not found in Oregon. Rabies symptoms in wildlife, particularly foxes, include lethargy, walking in circles, loss of muscular coordination, convulsions, irritability or aggressiveness, disorientation, excessive drooling of saliva, and showing no fear of humans. Report this type of behavior to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) hotline at 1-866-968-2600. People should stay away from bats and not handle them. If you find a live bat, contact your local ODFW office. If your pet has contact with a bat, contact your veterinarian. Typically, animals acquire rabies by eating or coming in contact with a rabid bat. If you know your pet has encountered a bat or been bitten by a wild animal, contact your veterinarian immediately Recommendations: Vaccinate your pets (dogs and cats) against rabies; Watch wildlife from a distance - don’t approach or attempt to handle wild animals; Do not feed wild animals; Keep garbage in secure containers and away from wildlife; Feed pets indoors; Seal openings in attics, basements, porches, sheds, barns and screen chimneys that might provide access to bats and other wildlife. More information about rabies can be found at the Oregon Health Authority’s website: http://public.health.oregon.gov/ DiseasesConditions/DiseasesAZ/Pages/disease.aspx?did=4. Rabies Compendium can be found at http://www.nasphv.org/ Documents/RabiesCompendium.pdf.

CHEAT GRASS Some plants we know can be toxic to your dogs, such as poinsettias and rhododendrons, but an invasive weed we have in Oregon, called cheat grass, can cause just as much discomfort to your pet as other toxic plants. Cheat grass is an annual weed that sprouts its spindle-like seeds in spring and fall; it is very hardy, and flammable. The seeds of cheat grass can be the culprits of sores in your dogs ears, paws, nose, mouth, skin, and if ingested, internally. The structure of the seed gives it the ability to burrow into your dog’s skin or the pad of their paw and between the toes, causing infection and discomfort. Most cheat grass seeds have to be removed by a veterinarian because of their barbed qualities. Attempting to pull them out without sedation equates pulling a fish hook out backwards. Prevent your dog from getting some of these nasty seeds by mowing the grass or using weed killer that is safe for pets, keeping your dog away from fields of the grass is also a good strategy. Check your dog for the seeds daily and remove them from the coat right away, before they have a chance to become a problem!

THE TACKLE BOX After a busy weekend of camping and fishing, sometimes a little get-away is called for where there may not be so many folks on the water. A little bit of a drive and you can get to Ana Reservoir. Ana Reservoir is a great spot to catch fish and with the summer just starting, the temperature is not so hot so the fishing is more enjoyable. Summer Lake can get pretty warm for pets and kids if you are not aware and are not prepared to keep everyone comfortable. This is a 60 acre reservoir located about 23 miles northeast of Paisley, Oregon and approximately 70 miles from La Pine. This reservoir maintains a temperature of about 58 degrees and is open year around. It is stocked with hybrid bass and rainbow trout. Boats can be launched from an improved ramp and an accessible dock is available. However, the only fuel close is at the Summer Lake Store. There are no amenities there like some of the resort destinations offer, so pack water and a lunch. Shade is a premium, so be prepared for that as well. Many anglers target hybrid bass January to March using crankbaits (e.g. Rapala’s) from the shore, but these fish can be caught anytime during the year. Anglers using boats can troll crankbaits or jig for hybrid bass. Check the regulations for special conditions that exist for harvesting hybrid bass. Trout fishing can be good anytime of the year because water temperatures keep them active. Bait, lures, flies, or trolling will be productive for trout. Take a little drive, spend some time looking at all the wildlife you will pass on the way out there, and be one with nature at Ana, you will not regret the trip. FISH ON! Newberry Sportsman’s Recreation Show & River Derby La Pine Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce a brand new event for La Pine and Newberry Country …The Newberry Sportsman’s Recreation Show & River Derby … set for September 21 & 22, 2013 at the La Pine State Park & the La Pine Community Center. We are offering this opportunity to our recreation partners in particular to join us in the business showcase aspect of this event. We would encourage you to create a display of your properties and assets to show to the visitors and locals that will be attending. We are also actively recruiting vendors of recreation and sportsman merchandise such as fishing/hunting/camping supplies; RVs and off road vehicles, etc. We are planning seminars in archery, black powder, hunting safety, etc. We are working on demos such as Dutch Oven Camp Cooking and we are arranging for a kiddie fishing hole in the middle of it all. We hope to grow this into a premier sportsman event. PLUS… we have invented a “River Derby” utilizing the beautiful Deschutes River and our own La Pine State Park! It is an ambitious undertaking, and we understand it will take a few years to become the ultimate event we have envisioned, so we are offering very reasonable vendor/exhibitor rates for this first year. Because this is a Chamber event, we will also be offering discounted vendor spaces to our loyal chamber members. We hope you will join us in creating an exciting, brand new premier event for our beautiful community! Vendor spaces will be in 10’ increments; there will be limited larger spaces that will accommodate RVs and trailers; there will be spaces with electricity with extra charge depending on the type of electricity needed. There is no water or sewer hook-up for RVs, but there will be a limited number of standard RV electric hookups. Please fill out the vendor application and send it in soon; we anticipate that spaces will fill up quickly. Hope you can join us! Living Well With Chronic Conditions Program Do you or someone you know, live with a health condition that affects daily life? Workshops to achieve a healthier way of living for people living with ongoing health conditions begin as early June 4. Workshops are now being held in Deschutes, Crook and Jefferson Counties, in both English and Spanish. A chronic health problem is one that you must learn to live with for many years, such as diabetes, emphysema, arthritis, migraine headaches, and heart disease. A healthy way to live with a chronic condition is to work at overcoming the symptoms. The Living Well with Chronic Conditions program, sponsored by Living Well Central Oregon, is designed to complement and enhance medical treatment and disease management. Through the series of classes, participants will learn what they can do to feel better and manage their condition more effectively. One series of classes and the book, Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions, costs each participant a total of $10. Living Well with Chronic Conditions (Limited Summer Schedule): Bend: Tuesdays, June 4 to July 9, 2:30pm-5:00pm; Redmond: Mondays, June 10 to July 15, 1:00pm to 3:30pm. Living Well Central Oregon is a regional, collaborative initiative that sponsors the Living Well with Chronic Conditions program through the cooperation, dedication and support of many of the health and social service organizations throughout Deschutes, Jefferson and Crook counties. To receive Living Well class information or to register for classes, please call 541-322-7430 or visit the Living Well-Central Oregon website at www.livingwellco.org.

“We are the hub of the business community, promoting commerce and tourism making La Pine a vibrant community to work, live and play!”
LA PINE FEED & PET SUPPLY - Owners: Rick & Barb Byrd Address: 16565 Reed Rd., La Pine, OR 97739 • Email: firstname.lastname@example.org • Phone: 541-536-1388 So, Rick and Barb when did you open the feed store business? “We bought the feed store on March 1, 2009. It had been there for 17 years and we just celebrated the 20th anniversary last March. On Saturday the 18th, they held a wonderful customer appreciation day that features sale prices, a BBQ, Karaoke and a petting zoo. They have just leased a space to Nancy Thurston for her Western Décor and gift store, too.” Are you the main players at La Pine Feed? “I work part time and my husband Rick is there during all of the open business hours. He is for sure ‘The main man!’” Why do you work, live and play in La Pine? “The only time we have is the time we spend at the store, so I guess you can say that we live here because we own our business!” What is the potential for growth for a feed business? “With more people moving into the area every year, we have lots of potential for having them as customers. Everyone has a dog or cat, lots have horses and other livestock and we are there to help them.” What is your business’s greatest challenge? “We think that it is probably related to people going up to Bend to shop. It is silly to spend extra money on gas when we can meet the prices and the customers’ needs right here.” What is the biggest highlight of your career? “I came from a dental background so learning about every aspect of animal feed and products and helping people to get what they need is all new and exciting to me.” (She laughed about the fact that she had learned it, too!) What do you do to relax? “I do love a good trail ride on horses and I do art work, drawing and watercolor and oil painting of animals, mostly, but, I love Native American portraits, too. Come and see my work at our store.” Tell us something about yourself that few people know about: “Both of us are pretty much open books. We have nothing - at least nothing interesting to hide!” In terms of volunteering in the community, what is your personal contribution to the community? “We belong to the Chamber, and we don’t have lots of time, but we can contribute through a variety of donations to the area organizations.” What are your plans for the future? “We are always ready for a new adventure, but have no real plans to do anything different unless the opportunity arises.” Do you have a mission? “We give people good products at affordable prices.”

Register To Receive 9-1-1 Emergency Notices By Cell Phone Did you know you can register to receive future emergency notices on your cell phone from Deschutes 9-1-1? The online registration service is available for residents living in Deschutes County, Crooked River Ranch, and Camp Sherman. Notices can ONLY be received if you register for the service. The Deschutes County Citizen Emergency Notification System (CENS) notifies the public with important information during an emergency. Now, owners of cell phone or VoIP lines can receive the same emergency message as those with land-line phones IF THEY REGISTER (opting-in for the service). When registering to receive CENS notices, you’ll be asked to provide your email address, a password, and a challenge question/answer (in case you forget information that establishes your account). You’ll also be asked to provide your contact information. To register your wireless or VoIP phone to receive emergency notices, please visit www.deschutes.org/citizenalerts. Deschutes County emergency notices will be sent to you in the form of emails, phone calls or text messages. Once you register, you can return to your account page to manage information and settings. You can also register additional contacts through the system. If CENS attempts to call your cell and the line is busy, the system will redial the number three times to make contact. If an answering machine or voice mail system picks up the call, an emergency message will be recorded. For more info and to register your cell or VoIP phones, please visit www.deschutes.org/citizenalerts or call the Deschutes County 9-1-1 business line at 541-388-0185.

Spay & Neuter Grant Application Process Opens Deschutes County is currently soliciting applications for grants to local non-profit organizations for providing spay and neuter services. A total of $12,500 is available for multiple grant awards. Applications must be received by 5:00pm on Wednesday, June 5. In November 2007, Deschutes County Dog License and Pet ID Applications were revised to allow a voluntary donation for spay and neuter services. Each year, the voluntary donations are offered to non-profit organizations which provide spay and neuter services in Deschutes County for pets whose owners are unable to access or afford the procedure. Grant funds may also be used for educational or promotional programs focused on encouraging or expanding spay and neuter services in Deschutes County. To be eligible for the program, applicants must be a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, located in Deschutes County, and able to certify that grant proceeds will be used in support of Deschutes County residents. Applications will be evaluated based on several criteria, including organizational stability, connection to grant funding objectives, and ability to leverage the grant funds to access other financial support. The deadline to submit an application is 5:00pm on Wednesday, June 5. Grants will be awarded by the end of June. The application form is available on the Deschutes County website, www.deschutes.org. Completed applications must be received in the Deschutes County Department of Administrative Services by the stated deadline. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. Please mail or hand deliver completed applications to: Judith Ure, Deschutes County Department of Administrative Services, P.O. Box 6005, Bend, OR 97708-6005. You may send electronic copies of the application by deadline to: judithu@ deschutes.org.
Together, We Can End Pet Homelessness In Central Oregon Community Outreach Team: Bend Spay and Neuter Project has some exciting news to share. We’ve been working with the Humane Society of the United States to learn more about their Pets For Life program. This program sends organizations like Bend Spay and Neuter Project to the streets where we go door to door in low income neighborhoods to spread the word about responsible pet ownership and to help people and pets in need. Our first Outreach Team training will be held on 6/8 from 9am to 10am at our clinic. If you are interested in joining our Outreach Team, please email email@example.com for more information! Community Cat Care Team: Are you a crazy cat lady or gentleman? Do you have a big heart and want to help outdoor cats? Then we want you! Those of you who are familiar with BSNP know that we’ve always promoted the practice of Trap, Neuter, Return to help control the population of feral and stray cats. Now, we are recruiting a team of volunteers to join our Community Cat Care Team. Members of our C3 team will be summoned when feral or stray cats are in need of being trapped so that they can be altered, vaccinated, eartipped and re-released. For more information about Trap, Neuter, Return, visit www.alleycat.org or call BSNP at 541-617-1010. To join the C3 Team, please join us at one of our monthly TNR Info Sessions held at the downtown Bend Public Library, see our events calendar at www.bendsnip.org for more details!

Wayne Lowry Appointed As Deschutes County Finance Director Deschutes County has appointed Wayne Lowry as Finance Director. Wayne replaces Marty Wynne who is retiring after serving in the position for 17 years. Wayne’s experience includes over 30 years of local government finance and accounting. He will join Deschutes County on Monday, July 8, after serving as the Chief Financial Officer for the Sherwood School District for over five years. “The Finance Director is a very important position in the County. Wayne will maintain the high level of professionalism and experience we expect here. The Board is pleased to welcome Wayne,” said Board of County Commissioners Chair Alan Unger. Prior to his employment with Sherwood School District, Wayne worked for Washington County, Oregon as the Chief Finance Officer. During his employment with Washington County, he managed a $350 million debt and treasury portfolio. His other responsibilities included purchasing, accounting and financial reporting. Wayne’s professional experience includes serving as Finance Director for the City of Tigard, Oregon, and as Internal Auditor for Orange County, California. “I believe that Wayne is the perfect fit for Deschutes County. Throughout the interview process, beyond his technical expertise, Wayne demonstrated his ability and desire to work with the Board of Commissioners, County administration and individual departments to learn about the unique service areas of the County to provide tailored advice and counseling in each of those areas. I have no doubt that he will become a trusted internal financial consultant to everyone at the County, as well as becoming someone the public will trust to capably and securely manage the County’s financial business,” County Administrator Tom Anderson said. Wayne has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration – Accounting from the California State University, Long Beach. He is a Certified Public Accountant, is the past president of the Oregon Municipal Finance Officers Association, and is currently serving on the Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) Employers Task Force. The Deschutes County Finance Director serves as the Chief Financial Officer for the County and is the financial advisor to the County Administrator and the Board of County Commissioners.

LYNA Lyna is a super sweet 6 year old kitty that was surrendered to the shelter because, sadly, her owner had to move and could not take her with them. She has lived most of her life inside and would prefer to find a forever home that would let her lounge in sunbeams and stare out the window at the nature. If Lyna is the kitty for you, then come down to the shelter today and adopt her!

Deschutes County Budget Committee The Deschutes County Budget Committee adjourned from budget discussions Thursday afternoon, May 23rd. The committee is made up of the three County Commissioners, plus three volunteer citizens. In order to make thoughtful, educated decisions about the impact of their budget decisions, the six-member group used the 2013-14 Deschutes County Goals & Objectives as their guideline. The Goals & Objectives were set earlier this year by the Board of County Commissioners. Areas of focus included safe communities, healthy people, economic vitality, a healthy environment and effective service delivery. Key topics of Budget Committee discussions primarily included: service level retention, staffing levels, cost of labor, and County fees. Service levels to Deschutes County residents will stay constant. The utmost care and consideration was taken by department directors in preparing their budgets, and by the Budget Committee to retain service levels to the public in the next budget year. While staffing levels will generally remain flat in most departments, there were some position reductions in the Road Department, Assessor’s Office, Public Health, Sheriff’s Office, and the Juvenile Justice Department. Positions were added in Behavioral Health, and FTE hours were added in Code Enforcement and Veteran’s Services. “I’d like to praise the Budget Committee this year for their thoughtful discussion and careful decision making. The Committee worked hard towards 100 percent consensus on each tough decision that was made,” County Administrator Tom Anderson said. The next step in the County’s budget process is Board of County Commissioner consideration of budget approval during a public meeting and vote on Monday, June 24, at the 10:00am, Business Meeting. The public is welcome to attend.
Human Origins Series Central Oregon Community College is hosting the third lecture in the second series of “How Did We Get Here? Human Origins, Evolution and Migrations” presentations. The continuing series highlights cutting-edge anthropological research and discoveries. David Montgomery will present “The Rocks Don’t Lie: A Geologist Investigates Noah’s Flood” at 6:30pm on Friday, June 7, in Hitchcock Auditorium on the COCC Bend Campus. Based on his most recent book, he presents a surprising perspective on Noah’s Flood, with an explorer’s eye and a refreshing approach to both faith and science. Montgomery is a MacArthur Fellow, two-time winner of the Washington State Book Award, and a professor of geomorphology in the Department of Earth and Space Sciences at the University of Washington. His research interests include the effects of geological processes on ecological systems and human societies; and how climate, tectonics and erosion interact in shaping the topography on Earth and Mars. His published work includes studies of the evolution and near-extirpation of salmon, fluvial and hill-slope processes in mountain drainage basins, the evolution of mountain ranges (Cascades, Andes, and Himalaya), and the analysis of digital topography. Current research includes field projects in eastern Tibet and the Pacific Northwest. Tickets are $8 for Nature Center members; general public $10; entire series $50. Students are free with ID card. Tickets are available through the Sunriver Nature Center and at the door. For information, call 541-593-4394 or www.cocc.edu/foundation/vsp or sunrivernaturecenter.org. The series is sponsored by the Nancy R. Chandler Visiting Scholar Program, the Sunriver Nature Center & Observatory and the Oregon Community Foundation with support from the student governments of COCC and OSU-Cascades. Klamath Crisis Center Have you felt completely helpless trying to convince someone to leave her abuser? Here are the five most effective things you can say to her. Please note that it works because you use no force. She is living in a very coercive environment and when you tell her how you feel and then leave the decision up to her, she will feel supported and respected. That will get her attention. Don’t try to control her decision just stay in “I” statements and keep doing it. Also go to www.klamathcrisiscenter.org for more helpful information. If you want to know more call Renee Kapp at 541-433-2044. FIVE THINGS TO SAY TO SOMEONE WHO IS NOT YET READY TO TAKE ACTION: 1) I am afraid for your safety; 2) I am afraid for your children’s safety; 3) It will only get worse; 4) I am here for you when you are ready to leave; 5) You don’t deserve to be abused.

This past year, two Deschutes County businesses “cemented” their reputations for providing potential customers and pedestrians with a debris and hazard-free environment. On Monday, June 24, local businesses will receive Safe Sidewalk Awards from the Deschutes County Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC). The Safe Sidewalk Awards will be presented at the Deschutes County Board of Commissioners Business Meeting held on Monday, June 24 at 10:00am. The meeting will be held in the Barnes and Sawyer Rooms (first floor Hearing Room) of the Deschutes County Services Center at 1300 NW Wall Street in Bend. Each year, the award serves as a positive reminder to businesses that promptly removing snow and ice from sidewalks helping to ensure the safety of pedestrians and attracting customers. Along with the snow and ice of winter, there are many other hazards that are present year-round that need attention like low hanging vegetation, irrigation overspray, and deteriorating sidewalks. All of these conditions can create challenging and often dangerous conditions on sidewalks in commercial areas. 2012-2013 winners include: City of Bend Businesses - Ray’s Food Place; ODOT Region 4 District 10. City of Redmond Businesses, City of La Pine Businesses and City of Sisters Businesses - No nominations received. For more information about nominating a business next year for a BPAC Safe Sidewalks Award, please call the Deschutes County Community Development Department at 541-317-3150.
Kris Moore Art Exhibit At La Pine Library
Kris Moore Art Exhibit At La Pine Library will be showing June 13th-October 10th, 2013. Bio: After retiring from a career in education, my husband & I moved to the “Outback of Oregon.” As a native Oregonian, I have lived several places throughout the state & have always been in awe of the beauty that surrounds us. Through the years I have taken several art classes in various mediums. I have always been drawn to watercolor painting but knew I would need time to learn & develop the complex skills required to paint. I set this as a goal for myself when I retired. I checked out many books from the library, purchased & researched many books , met with other local watercolorists, & took classes. Each day I learn something new & continue to be surprised & delighted as a painting develops through different stages. I enjoy the use of rich colors & the fluidity of the paint as I try to capture the beauty around me. I use photographs as inspiration. When I paint my goal is to invite the viewer to step inside the painting with me. Someone told me that they could smell the sagebrush when they looked at the “Fort Rock” picture. That was the feeling I hoped to capture. My husband, Dave, mats and frames my work and supports me in countless ways. Molly, our yellow lab, is a constant companion overseeing the framing aspect and near me when I am painting. Molly has even been known to lick one of the paintings after it was finished. Much to my horror and later surprise, she gave it a more faded technique. We have another artist in the family! Know Someone Pregnant With Their First Baby? When a young woman becomes pregnant before she’s ready to take care of a child, the risk factors for the entire family escalate. She may have a family background of low wages, welfare, or worse - a pattern that, without intervention, she may be fated to repeat. The Deschutes County Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) program can help young mothers succeed as new parents. The goals of NFP include helping women engage in good preventive health practices, helping parents provide responsible health and development care for their children, and helping them to improve the self-sufficiency of their family. The program is free to all eligible women in Deschutes County who are pregnant with their first child. These goals are reached through the care of trusted, respected Deschutes County Public Health nurses. A nurse brings specialized healthcare knowledge to and spends time with the families she cares for. This relationship of trust makes a significant difference for local families. NFP succeeds because expectant mothers are provided with a relationship they can count on-a committed and compassionate nurse who makes regular home visits over a period of time of 30 months, from before birth until the baby is two years old. Nurse-Family Partnerships is an evidence based community health program with three decades of research proving it works. At its heart, the program empowers women to change their families’ lives for the better. To find out more about the Deschutes County Health Services Nurse-Family Partnerships program, please call 541-322-7499 or visit www.nursefamilypartnership.org.

A real bargain for only $45. There is also an opportunity to sponsor a bench for $750 or one of the corner planters for $1500. Mastercard and Visa purchases available. Forms may be picked up at Little d Technology, the La Pine Chamber Office, the La Pine Parks and Recreation Office and will be available for sale at the L&S Gardens Rhubarb Festival to be held on June 8th.
