Volunteers Needed for Frontier Days Frontier Days is looking for new volunteers. We will need folks for lots of events and for preparation of the Frontier Days Land. In March we need lots of help for this year’s Crab Feed on March 13th. We need help to set up, serve and take down at the La Pine Senior Center. At this summer’s event on the 1st- 4th of July there are many ways to serve the community by helping clear and prepare the land for the summer events like the midway, the lawnmower races, RC Fliers, Indian Village and so much more! This year, we will have a Red, White and Bluegrass event on August 20-21. If you can help, want to meet new folks who are active in the community, come join the volunteer pool at the Frontier Days Association! Call Dayle 541-536-7821 for info. The Crab Feed on March 13th is coming up and it’s always lots of fun for everybody. BUY TICKETS AT THE Chamber $45.00. This year we will set up limited dining outside and remember There is no Bad weather in La Pine- only Bad clothing! Dress for the day and we look forward to meeting you!

‘People Will Be Blown Away by the Changes’ at Community Kitchen By Andrea Hine, Contributing Writer “So many positive things are going on here at Community Kitchen -- people will be blown away by the changes,” agreed Sharri Dempsey, manager, and Victoria Gardner, grant writer for the nonprofit. “And it’s due in large measure to wonderful donations we receive from the really kind and understanding people in this area.” A tour of the facilities revealed that no corner remained untouched by the community’s generosity: new floors and painted walls throughout the building that houses the kitchen; new toilets; new electrical outlets installed by a volunteer; and a new office for Dempsey. Plus a new chef, Misty Manning, whose meals Dempsey described as “absolutely amazing,” and who shared the just-announced plans of La Pine Foodies to produce its first annual cookbook; all proceeds will go to Community Kitchen. The pantry area, previously a chicken coop, “used to have dirt floors, a very old box freezer, and walls that were so thin the sun came through them. The lack of insulation meant that our volunteers were miserably hot or cold, depending on the weather,” Dempsey shuddered in sympathy. “Now the pantry is completely insulated, with cement floors and new siding (put up by a volunteer), and – the crowning glory -- an energy-efficient, subzero, commercial-grade, double-door freezer. I got so excited that I couldn’t even sleep at night before it arrived,” she said. “In addition, we have several two- and three-door coolers that were generously donated by TJ’s Quick Stop & Ice Cream.” Ever conscious of Community Kitchen’s bottom line, Dempsey pointed out that “the new freezer will make a significant difference in our monthly electric bill, which has easily gone down 20 percent already. It will make our world, and that of our chef Misty, so much easier.” The pantry renovations and equipment purchases are transformative, emphasized Gardner, and credit for the capital funding grants that made them possible go to Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation, Clark Family Foundation, Charis Fund and a Klamath Falls organization (which prefers to remain anonymous), among others.

‘Everything Is Always Free’ at Community Kitchen’ By Andrea Hine, Contributing Writer “Everything is always free,” emphasized Sharri Dempsey, manager of La Pine’s Community Kitchen. “People don’t believe it, given the volume of food we prepare and distribute, but we’re grateful beyond words to our donors and talented volunteers who make our work possible.” To quantify: • On one day alone, 65-70 food boxes (each weighing about 50 pounds) are distributed – or about 576 boxes a month. Each box contains fresh produce, meat, dairy, bread, soups, canned items – “everything a body needs to stay alive and eat decent food,” described Dempsey. And when possible, we also provide extras such as ice cream, pastry, cheese and yogurt.” • Community Kitchen also serves at least 2,400 hot lunches a month. • In 2020, the nonprofit distributed 28,380 hot meals, and 304,710 pounds of food. Said Victoria Gardner, grant writer for Community Kitchen, “other places take away your dignity; we are committed to raising people up.” And lest her message in the same vein be unclear, Dempsey repeated it: “Everything is always free.”

541-280-5946 ‘The Best Seller’s Market I’ve Seen in La Pine Since 1998,’ Says Owner of High Lakes Realty By Andrea Hine, Contributing Writer “This is the best seller’s market I’ve seen since 1998,” noted Dianne Willis, owner/ managing partner of High Lakes Realty & Property Management in La Pine. “There’s hardly any inventory, and when something goes on the market, it’s usually gone the same day. Overall, the price on homes and land (which is hard to find) seems to rise with each transaction. “We used to see multiple offers when a property was really well priced and ready to go,” she elaborated. “Especially in the past six months, however, as there just isn’t anything available, it’s not uncommon to have three or four offers come in.” Willis also noted that “some potential buyers even make offers without seeing the property, usually just to tie it up. In response, many brokers now specify a time period before any offers will be considered – say five days from when the property is first listed – to let everyone have a chance to see it.” On the property management side, Willis commented that “these days, we seldom have any vacancies, and rental rates are up.” Willis analyzed sales figures from one month (Jan. 24 to Feb. 24) to underscore current activity in the La Pine area: • Seven frame homes on 1+ acres or more closed (average sold price $394k), with eight currently active (average list price $484k). • Six frame homes inside the City of La Pine on less than .3 acres, mostly subdivisions, closed (average sold price $302k), with four currently active (average list price $331k). • Seven manufactured homes on 1+ acres closed (average sold price $285k) with six currently active (average list price $288k). “Look at the price increase on average for these three divisions of properties in just one month,” said Willis. “These numbers also show how the lack of inventory is creating quite a seller’s market. The situation is different from the 2008 bubble, but it will be interesting to see how this plays out.” (To contact Willis or the other brokers at High Lakes Realty & Property Management, go to www.highlakesrealty.com or phone 541-536-0117. As one customer praised, “it’s a great company that does a wonderful job.”)

Culinary Training Merits Rare Top Status The Cascade Culinary Institute (CCI) at Central Oregon Community College (COCC) has received exemplary accreditation in all of its baking and culinary programs from the American Culinary Federation Education Foundation Accrediting Commission (ACFEFAC), making it the only culinary school in Oregon to hold that distinction. CCI offers an associate degree and a certificate in both culinary arts and baking and pastry arts, and incorporates diverse learning experiences, such as exchange programs with other countries, a teaching restaurant, bakery kiosk and a customized food truck. The culinary school merited the status based on full compliance of all requirements and excellent management of the program. “I am thrilled and incredibly proud,” said Wayne Yeatman, culinary instructor and chair of CCI. “This is a reflection of our outstanding faculty, facilities and programming, and underscores how comprehensive and high-value our training is. It reaffirms our place among top schools nationwide.” The ACFEFAC evaluates a host of criteria, including program mission and goals, organization and administration, curriculum and facilities, and involves an on-site visit. Exemplary status results in a seven-year accreditation term; normal accreditation with the ACFEFAC requires renewal every five years. The high ranking comes at a time when culinary schools around the country are facing falling enrollments and even closing doors. Last July, Pioneer Pacific College announced plans to permanently shutter its Oregon Culinary Institute while the International Culinary Center in New York likewise closed its doors. The New England Culinary Institute made the same decision in December. CCI has worked with some students from these schools to ensure their credits transferred, and to ensure their education could continue at CCI without disruption or delay. For COCC’s culinary program, which began in 1994, and for its baking program, which opened in 2012, the new accreditation level will give would-be culinary students around the U.S. another reason to seriously consider CCI, particularly now that the college’s residence hall is open for applications for fall term. The culinary program also offers a degree and certificate in hospitality management. “This combination of factors solidifies CCI’s place on the culinary education map,” said Dr. Laurie Chesley, president of COCC. “We know we have a stellar program and a strong reputation on the West Coast, but with this top industry recognition and a changing landscape for culinary schools, we are excited to welcome even more students from across the U.S.” The American Culinary Federation, a professional organization for chefs and cooks founded in 1929, is the largest professional chefs’ organization in North America.

Enjoy corned beef and cabbage this St. Patrick’s Day!

Corned Beef and Cabbage (Serves 6 to 8)

Don’t Neglect Your Eye Health.

1 4 to 5 pound corned beef brisket 1 teaspoon pickling spices 1 head cabbage 2 pounds boiling potatoes 6 to 8 small carrots (optional) Parsnips (optional) Turnips (optional)

We’re Open to See You Now!

DIRECTIONS: Place the corned beef in a pot that holds at least 5 quarts of water. Cover completely with cold water. Place over high heat and bring to a simmer. As soon as bubbles start to break on the surface of the water, adjust the heat so the water simmers very, very gently. With a slotted spoon, skim off the residue that accumulates on the surface. When the residue stops coming to the surface, add the pickling spices. Continue to cook, with bubbles just gently breaking on the surface, for 3 to 4 hours, until fork tender. The meat can be safely held in its water for about 2 hours; reheat gently. Cook the vegetables until fork tender in separate pots of boiling fresh water or, especially for the cabbage, use some of the water in which the corned beef was cooked. Slice the corned beef and serve with mustard and/or horseradish on a platter, surrounded with some of the vegetables or with vegetables in a separate bowl.

“The Mission Of The La Pine Chamber Of Commerce Is To Be The Connecting Force In The Community, Promoting Commerce, And Focusing On Making La Pine A Prosperous And Vibrant Place To Live, Work And Play!” LOCAL NEED FOR FOOD PANTRIES & MEAL SERVICES IN HIGH DEMAND!… by T. Myers Nonprofit Chamber members can use some extra help to make it through the next couple of months! During the past year, with the COVID-19 closures, loss of jobs, student/child food insecurities and dollars that refuse to stretch enough to cover basic needs for many of our neighbors, there has been an increased demand for the kind of services that St. Vincent de Paul, the La Pine Community Kitchen and the La Pine Senior Center have faithfully provided. All three of these nonprofits provide thousands of pounds of food to locals. Additionally, they support homeless needs with blankets, tents, winter clothing and more. St. Vinnie’s Social Services Division on Morson Street provides monthly food boxes that supplement families with about a week’s worth of fresh, canned and dried foods. They also have an emergency housing voucher program, a utility program, medical assistance and sometimes a dental program where a van comes to the area to help with tooth emergencies. The Retail Store next to the Post Office supports the social service division, but with such increased needs, donations are needed to cover the extra expenses for food. For more information, give them a call at 541-536-1956. The Community Kitchen provides a five day a week take-out lunch program. They also operate a Clothing Closet and a terrific Produce Pantry that is open two days each week. They accept donations and cash to cover the costs of buying extra items needed to continue their support of local residents in need. For more information, give them a call at 541-536-1312. The La Pine Senior Center offers meals to seniors three days a week. They also coordinate the Meals on Wheels efforts, and Jamie Donahue has also been instrumental in getting COVID-19 testing and shots for seniors here in La Pine. For more information, give them a call at 541-536-6237. The La Pine schools are back in session, and students that have returned can get meals once again. There are still lots of children who are not in classes yet. They remain in jeopardy of food insecurity. The Family Access Network advocates at the schools, and can be contacted to coordinate help for La Pine Families in need. They can help with winter clothing, coats, boots and more! If you feel like you can donate to help stock proteins and other needed items for the pantries, your monetary donations are welcome! If you know neighbors - especially those with children- who could use a hand, recommend that they come to one of the organizations to get meals covered. Hooray! Hooray! It’s Dr. Seuss Day! Support your school reading programs! Sponsored by:

Join La Pine’s Senior Activity Center – ‘A Loving Place and a Home Away From Home’

Genial throughout the process, this La Pine-area resident was one of 200 people, 80+ years of age, who received the Moderna vaccine on February 19, 2021 at the Senior Activity Center.

“Steady Stream’ of 200 Residents, 80+ in Age, Obtains Vaccine at Senior Center By Andrea Hine, Contributing Writer Assisted by deputies from the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, and an unflappable cadre of volunteers, Jamie Donahue, manager of the Senior Activity Center, ensured that 200 residents age 80+ in the La Pine area received vaccine protection against Covid-19 last week. “I spent four months setting this up with Deschutes County Public Health (which provided doses and staff to administer them),” she said. “Only to be disappointed when bad weather led to a week’s postponement for this age group, which meant calling all those scheduled to receive the vaccine. But today is going great with our all-volunteer operation.” Almost 300 people in the 75+ age category also signed up on a waiting list to receive the vaccine, although Donahue doesn’t know when the Senior Center might receive further doses.

By Andrea Hine, Contributing Writer “This is a very special and loving place,” described Bonnie Millage, a three-year volunteer at the Senior Activity Center who heads this year’s membership drive. “It’s a home away from home with tons of activities, and very social. You’ll make lots of friends here. “People mistakenly think that the government is paying for all we offer, but membership fees help keep our doors open,” she pointed out. “And through the end of February, it costs only $35 to join (free lunch coupon included) instead of $40 – which breaks down to only $2.91 per month.” Millage, who adds that “people always smile and greet you,” listed “get fit together” member options such as line dancing, body groove (a dance workout) and a walking group. Other activities have included bingo, rock painting, quilting, bridge, cribbage, pinochle, and picnics. “Members also enjoy lunch together on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday at 11:30 a.m.,” said Millage. (This has been temporarily suspended due to Covid-19 safety precautions, and replaced with drive-through meals.) “The cost, which helps support the lunch program, is $5 for those under age 60; with a recommended donation of $4 for those 60+.” In addition, membership includes book & puzzle exchanges; free monthly drawings for lunch or a pedicure; free wi-fi; voting rights to help choose activities and elect board members; and $5 for yoga classes (a 50% discount) – as well as $5 off the vendor fee for events, and a 10% discount on facility rental. “I’ve met so many wonderful people here,” noted volunteer Makela Karissa. “The Senior Center has such a positive vibe, in large measure due to Jamie Donahue, who has a very high emotional IQ. She is this place, and people swarm around her like moths around a light.” “Jamie is a fabulous woman who takes her job to heart, and the Senior Center has changed so much under her leadership,” Millage added. “She is doing wonderful things.” (Membership applications are available at the Senior Activity Center, 18450 Victory Way, La Pine. Tel: 541-538-8237. Email address: www.lapineseniorcenter.org. Hours of operation: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday – Friday.)

Known for his seemingly insatiable willingness to assist local nonprofits, Aaron Schofield, shown above, branch manager of First Interstate Bank in Sunriver, said that volunteering at the Senior Center was “an opportunity to help out seniors in the community and get as many vaccinated as possible. Plus it saves them from having to drive all the way to Redmond.”

Deputy Gordon Johansen, right, of the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office was among those from DCSO who checked people in outside the Senior Center. Complimented Jamie Donahue, manager, “the DCSO is here ‘like that’ every time we need them. We’re so grateful.”

OF THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY WEB STEEL BUILDINGS NORTHWEST, LLC Web Steel Buildings Northwest, LLC started in 1989 in Sandy, Oregon, as a start-up company manufacturing steel buildings, and Rob Boaz has been the owner of that company since 2006. “I was born in Salem, and now live in East Gresham, which is an easy 12 minute commute to Sandy,” says Rob. “Here at our Sandy facility, we employ 10 office people (sales, design, administration) and 14 people in our fabrication shop.”

“No other manufacturer offers three distinctly different steel framing systems to meet your building goals.” I asked Rob to describe what types of buildings his company manufactures and sells. “We manufacture steel trusses and create preengineered metal building packages that our customers either put together themselves, or hire a contractor to do so. We make three uniquely different steel truss framing systems and the applications are limitless; including agricultural buildings, airplane hangars, churches, large commercial projects, garages, gymnasiums, hay storage, homes, light industrial, machinery storage, manufacturing facilities, municipal, playground covers, retail, riding arenas, RV storage, schools, shops, veterinarian clinics, warehouses, wineries & tasting rooms. There is virtually no use for which we have not designed. The three frame systems include the Rigid Frame (all steel), Vaulted Clearspan and Delta Truss (open web steel frames with wood purlins and girts), and the Hybrid Frame (solid steel frame with wood purlins and girts). No other manufacturer offers these three

“We will definitely be at the Central Oregon Sportsmen’s Show in Redmond from March 11-14, where those interested can view our building plans and models.” — Rob Boaz, Owner, Web Steel Buildings NW, LLC

“Last year was our best ever, with literally a 20% increase over 2019...we have had double-digit increases every year since 2013.” distinctly different steel framing systems to meet the customer’s building goals.” Web Steel Buildings has a website, www.wsbnw.com, which has loads of building samples for the customer to browse through — whether they’re thinking of adding a shop to their property or building an actual residence. Estimates are free. And they warrant that the structural beams and fabrication members of the building components shall be free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of ten years. “Over the course of our history we have probably sold at least 40 buildings in the La Pine area,” said Rob. “We take on projects that other manufacturers won’t. We will customize buildings so that the homeowner or business gets exactly the product they want. Apart from advertising in publications like Wise Buys Ads and More, a majority of our business comes from repeat customers and referrals.” Web Steel Buildings Northwest sends their building kits all over the western United States to Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, California, Arizona, Colorado, Alaska, and Hawaii, with comments from customers like the following: “Just wanted to let you know we had a 7.0 earthquake on Friday 11-30-18 and your building made it through without even a crack in the concrete. Thank you for designing your buildings to last a life time.” Palmer, Alaska customer.

“Going from the signed contract to the delivery of building components usually takes 4-6 months, including the design process, the engineering and the permitting. Commercial projects will almost certainly take more time,” said Rob. ”Last year was our best ever, with literally a 20% increase over 2019. Really unbelievable given the kind of year 2020 was. And we have had double-digit increases every year since 2013.” Rob says their most popular model is the Vaulted Truss building, ideal for those backyard shops and garages. Second is the Rigid Frame since it is best suited for large commercial projects and manufacturing type facilities. Web Steel Buildings Northwest typically does about 6-8 trade shows per year, but this year, due to the COVID pandemic, they are down to just a few. They will definitely be at the Central Oregon Sportsmen’s Show in Redmond from March 11-14, where those interested can view their building plans and models.
