April 2018

You can call me (M)al It was a clandestine email approach. The Prime Minister is visiting McLaren Vale next week and would like to make a major announcement at Wirra Wirra. Sure. Why not? As long as we’re not seen to be favouring one political bent over another… And you must keep it top secret. You know, hush, hush. Slightly more problematical. I mean someone had to be told. Lawns needed to be mowed, cellar-hands needed to be briefed – as it were – to have their shorts covering their backsides and as I wouldn’t be around, Smithy would have to be clued in and step up to host Mr. Turnbull. Then there is the Wirra Wirra Tribe. When it comes to leaking classified information, they make Julian Assange look like Colonel Sanders. But why us? Maybe he’s heard about the coffee at Harry’s Deli? Possibly wants to do a Shiraz Revolution tour – you know, let the closet lefty shine? Hey – the Cabinet might want to use the RS Wigley Room to meet? The occasional passing forklift will drown out any non-conforming dissenters in the room. But the simple fact was, South Australia was in election mode. And so, it happened that Malcolm Turnbull, then Liberal Opposition Leader (now Premier) Stephen Marshall, Federal Senator Anne Ruston, Local Member candidate Andy Gilfillan and a band of helpers with media pack in tow, converged upon Wirra Wirra one Saturday morning. Naturally, the one time the leader of our fair country graced our doorstep to make an announcement concerning Free Trade and Export, I’m on a plane to Guangzhou, China. Irony not lost on me. No sooner had I landed than the pictures started coming through and links to media coverage – even the PM’s Facebook page posted a video for all to see. But that wasn’t the interesting part. Not for me anyway 7000km away and without so much as an insta post or snap of me and The Member for Wentworth to show my mother.

The real highlight was the reaction when I mentioned it to the people I was travelling with in China. In Australia if you said “The Prime Minister is visiting Wirra Wirra”, the responses would run the full gamut of “That’s fantastic”, through to “Don’t let him anywhere near Church Block, I’d still like to be able to drink it” and everything in between. That includes a few comments unsuitable to the eyes of delicate readers of a publication such as the Bell Ringer newsletter. It’s such a sensitive matter depending on your allegiance that I found myself warning the marketers before I left about any potential social media posts. Don’t show any bias either way. All comments to be generic. Lest we should incur the wrath of 50% of the population who would descend upon our Facebook page like a plague of keyboard locusts. However, in China they have a different spin on the Government than we cynical Aussies. Sharing a few pics on my phone of Big Mal plunging the cap on a cabernet ferment and ringing The Angelus Bell induced gasps of awe and new-found respect. At least that’s how I took it. Before the next evening’s formalities, I suggested they slip a new slide into the PowerPoint presentation that is used as a prop while I speak, featuring the Trumble visit to Wirra Wirra. After talking a bit about who we are, our history, McLaren Vale, James Halliday 5 Star rated winery etc. I’d casually pull up the images and give it a whirl. Which I did. The response was a spontaneous outburst of applause. Interesting.

photos? When I explained it was because I was flying out to visit China at the time, this drew murmurs of sympathy and hopefully an extra case or two on the order form. As I’ve written in these pages before, China – it’s culture and people – never fail to surprise, delight and challenge on our travels. As a Shanghai-based colleague recently pointed out to me, “China is a book worth reading a thousand times”. I’ve been visiting for over a decade now and I’m learning every single time I set foot in the place. It’s now our largest export market and growing at a rate in a different league to the others. Just last week, President Xi Jinping passed a law that will effectively rule out political terms of office – he has the job for life. That’s something that Sugar Bun* could only dream about. Thankfully the Powerpoint program has an easy to use cut and paste facility, which given the Australian political landscape, will no doubt come in handy someday. Cheers. Next night, different city, another dinner and by now Turbo has gazumped Halliday in the presentation pecking order. Same response. And so, it went. By the end of the week my spiel went something like this – “Ni hao, my name is Andrew Kay from Wirra Wirra. The Prime Minister of Australia, Mr Malcolm Turnbull visited our winery last weekend. Here are the pictures. Pause. Thank you. Please queue in an orderly fashion to buy your wine. Good night.” Well, something like that. The timing of this visit was extremely fortuitous. The only query from the Chinese was always as to why I wasn’t in any of the

IT’S THE CAT’S WHISKERS! MRS W GETS A MAKEOVER

When Australia’s favourite fermented feline purred, “Can I have a bit of a makeover, this look is so 1990s!”, we felt it was time. We took her in to see our friends at Parallax with a request for the design equivalent of “a freshen up, but nothing too drastic that will make her unrecognisable to her friends”. Thankfully Mrs W absolutely luurves her new look and we will roll it out on the 2018 Mrs Wigley Rosé (available in May) and then on the Moscato later in the year. Keep an eye out and be sure to pay Mrs W the ultimate compliment by taking her home. She’s wonderful company.

Green Thoughts

BETTER THAN A BILL Have you joined THE TRIBE yet? Our exclusive club continues to grow – especially since we introduced the Church Block/Original Blend pack. To find out how you can have a selection of your favourite Wirra Wirra wines (and a few surprises) delivered to your door at great prices on a regular basis, simply go to: https://www.wirrawirra. com/wine-club/ or ask one of our friendly team at the Cellar Door.

There are several certifications that we aspire to which help encourage and acknowledge our sustainability credentials. Our vineyards are certified biodynamic with NASAA accreditation as well as being certified under the SAW (Sustainable Australia Winegrowing) program. The latest mark of goodness is the Entwine certification of the winery which was achieved last December. Entwine is a simple, certified Environmental Management system for wine production and Entwine Australia is the wine industry national program when it comes to third party environmental certification. It is recognised globally.

We seek out these accreditations to improve our environmental performance and to achieve better market access while ensuring we remain competitive with other producers across the world. It is becoming more common now for international retailers and hotel groups to request some form of sustainable accreditation before you can submit for a tender process. It shouldn’t be the driving motivator, but sometimes you need the “carrot and the stick” to get people up and going. The result is better for us, you and the planet.

Great for those of you that can’t get down to the winery or like to receive something other than a bill from Aussie Post once in a while. There’s something rather nice about a box of wine landing on your doorstep when you weren’t expecting it.

When Malcolm Met Smithy When PM Malcolm Turnbull wanted to make an announcement in McLaren Vale about Export and Free Trade Agreements, he chose Wirra Wirra as the venue. Accompanied by Opposition Leader (now Premier) Stephen Marshall, Federal Senator Anne Ruston and local Member-elect Andy Gilfillan, the group were in state election mode as they took a quick tour, rang the bell and discovered the joy of lunging through the “cap” on a fermenter of cabernet sauvignon for the cameras. We are yet to receive a dry-cleaning bill from Mal’s minders, so we’re guessing he made it through the exercise unscathed, despite wearing the non-regulation cellar outfit of white shirt and business suit. Kolencik’s Kitchen Rules

In the wink of an eye, Harry’s Deli has just turned 18 months old! How did that happen? In that time, our humble café, designed to showcase local producers, has become the must visit lunch time spot in McLaren Vale, each month breaking new ground in sales and attendance. Rob Kolencik and his team, do an amazing job out of their tiny kitchen (“You call that a kitchen?” – Rob) and never cease to delight with their spin on fresh panini, salads, platters and the ever-faithful Trott pie. By the time you read this, the new Autumn menu should be up and running. Find it at https://www.wirrawirra.com/ harrys-deli/ and drop on down to see us. The slick Italian outdoor infra-red heaters have been in place for a while now and will be perfect to take the chill off outdoor dining, making the courtyard a year-round space. Harry’s Deli is open 10-4pm MondaySaturday and 11-4pm Sunday and Public Holidays. No bookings please.

The sun was blazing, and growers and winemakers were feeling anxious as we rung in Vintage 2018 at our annual Bell Ringing ceremony on February 9. Reigning Bushing King and Queen Duncan Kennedy and Elspeth Kay from Kay Bros, donned the oppressive garb of their fiefdom and toasted the “official” commencement of harvest to a chorus of “Wassail” from the locals, led by the Master of Mischief, Mirth, Merriment and Mayhem Tony Brooks. Turns out the assembled vignerons with one eye on the bell and another on their crops needn’t have worried. The heat eased off and near perfect warm growing conditions ensued throughout harvest making the bounty from V18 one to look out for. Duncan explains why he has come dressed as the curtains from Her Majesty’s Theatre, while the Member for Mawson performs one of his last official government duties with his iphone

Oops, We Did it Again The Wirra Wirra Cellar Door has once again been named Best Large Cellar Door in McLaren Vale by Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine. A big shout out to Lisa Mc and the cellar door team, Rob K and the Harry’s Deli crew for making this happen. If you haven’t been down to check out our cellar door since the renovations – why not? It was 18 months ago!

We are open 10-5pm Mon-Sat and 11-5pm Sunday and Public Holidays at Cellar Door and close an hour earlier at Harry’s Deli. No more excuses!

Backing a Winner

He made 201 not out batting for Australia as a nightwatchman; he took 259 Test wickets in 71 Tests placing him at number 8 of our all-time wicket takers; he’s coached Yorkshire to successive English County championships and most recently, the Adelaide Strikers to the Big Bash title. What you may not know about Jason “Dizzy” Gillespie is that he’s a top bloke too! Although you might have suspected it. After the Strikers took out the final, Dizzy gave up his time one afternoon to bring the trophy to the winery where he signed autographs and had his photo taken countless times with local schoolkids and their parents. It’s been a great year for our Adelaide Strikers sponsorship. Championship aside, the exposure for Wirra Wirra at Adelaide Oval with the new LED signage has been hard to miss, while our Six for Six Strikers Cellars promotion was more popular than ever. We even had the squad down to visit during a rare break in the tournament where they showed their skills at Church Block blending, painting with wine – Australian Test players in waiting Alex Carey and Jake Weatherald were naturals – and of course, watermelon flinging. Go Strikers!

Blewey, Kez and Weathers – sounds like an FM Brekky Show; while Dizzy might have his work cut out with next year’s new look Strikers squad

Superstar CJ, Here We Go

For over a decade, Chris “CJ” Jeffery has been the key contact for many Bell Ringers. Whether it’s been taking orders over the phone, guiding them through the online shop, tracking down a rogue Aussie Post delivery or serving them at the counter and walking their order to the car, CJ has operated on the basis that he is never satisfied until the customer is. With the departure of Delta Robins after a mere 17 years’ service at Wirra Wirra, the opportunity presented itself to create a new role that puts CJ’s customer service and attention to detail skills to best use. He will be the one stop hub for all Export, Domestic and online orders in his role as Logistics Manager. If we’ve sold it, CJ will know about it and make sure it finds its way safely to the customer.

We are the World With vintage 2018 winding down at Wirra Wirra, once again the vintage crew has come from far and wide to make great wine at Wirra Wirra. The most pleasing thing is how many travellers put their purple hands up at the end of last year’s end of vintage party and declared they wished to return. Even more pleasing was that they kept that promise when they were sober too! Three Germans, a Swiss Miss, a Mexican, a Victorian and a Territorian, joined our regular crew of locals and one Argentinian to bond together over grapes, hard work and Cooper’s Pale Ale. Hopefully they will be back again next year with a few of their friends.

While our Cellar Door customers will miss his friendly face and phone manner, our distributors across the country and the globe will enjoy getting to know him and his devotion to the Essendon Football Club.

What they’re saying ab out us … 2015 RSW Shiraz “A full throttle red wine but with pitch perfect balance and exceptional length. The wine opens with dark berry and plummy fruit characters, a whiff of new leather and cedar, while the palate does a good job of dense choc-berry flavours and well judged spicy oak. Lush, lingering stuff.” 95 points, Mike Bennie WBM, January 2018

“Deep red/purple colour, with a good hue. The aromas are plummy and ripe, fruit-driven and bold, the palate full-bodied and generous in soft fleshy tannins, the balance and mouth-feel very appealing. A very stylish shiraz.” 93 points, Huon Hooke The Real Review

2017 Hiding Champion Sauvignon Blanc “Attractive flavour of gooseberry and lime, a sweet and sour sort of tonic water tang, spice and a clutch of green stuff, and a powdery finish of good length. All just so. Easy to enjoy.” 91 points, Gary Walsh The Wine Front, Dec, 2017

2015 The Angelus Cabernet Sauvignon “Formidable cabernet of structure and weight and yet a glossy, satiny textural feel. It’s deeply concentrated, seguing from lush forest berry and cassis characters through spicy yet well-judged oak and finishing on a flourish of bay leaf and clove. Dense, deep, brooding thing, it drinks well now with decanting, but leave it alone in a cellar.” 94 points, Mike Bennie WBM Magazine, Jan/Feb 2018

2016 Catapult Shiraz “Pretty much as the essence of McLaren Vale shiraz as you are likely to find at this price. Black and purple fruits, choc-mint notes, soft tannins, and some suggestion of oak. Still has years of improvement around the corner.” 93 points, James Halliday www.winecompanion.com.au

2016 The Absconder Grenache “From a vineyard planted in the 1920s and with old-world winemaking to match those old vines, this wine is deliciously old school in its design, the fruit like Japanese salted plum with oozing juices and earthy spices, even rare meaty notes as a savoury counterpoint. Bright, raspberry/ cherry flavours go the high road along with mint and musk aromatics. A supreme act of layering and complexity - and the beauty of all these elements in glorious harmony.” 5 stars, Tony Love Taste Magazine

“Deep red/purple colour, youthful, with a definite minty edge to the bouquet, and hints of leather and fresh earth. The palate rich and fruit-sweet, with a certain succulence that often sets grenache apart. Berry, mint and chocolate flavours, full and intense with a brightness from acidity and firm tannins. The wine has structure such as is rarely found in pure grenache wines.” 95 points, Huon Hooke The Real Review
