WORKS

I refuse to let HIV get in the way of my busy schedule. I even have a cell phone app that reminds me to take my HIV meds. When I’m not working, I keep busy with boot camp, swimming, weight lifting, meditation, traveling and — oh yeah — karaoke. I know that the more control I have over my HIV, the less power I give to the virus. I take control by taking my HIV medication every day.

PUBLISHER'S CORNER CELEBRATING THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF MIAMI BEACH GAY PRIDE This week, we bring you a very special edition celebrating the 10th anniversary of Miami Beach Gay Pride, taking place April 2-8. The week's worth of events celebrating Pride and our LGBTQ community will include several highlights, such as Friday night's Pride VIP Gala, a Saturday Beach Party and Pride Festival, and the Sunday Pride Parade and Festival. Wire Magazine's annual Miami Beach Gay Pride issue provides you with a full overview of this year's celebrations. Miami Beach Gay Pride will also celebrate a dynamic duo of Grand Marshals – Olympic silver medalist Gus Kenworthy and NBC 6 anchor and host Roxanne Vargas. Gus and Roxanne will be honored at several events during Pride Week and will lead the loud and colorful Sunday Pride Parade on Ocean Drive, beginning at noon. "Gus and Roxy are two preeminent public figures who well represent and support the LGBTQ community. Gus for being a role model as an out and proud sportsman who excels at his craft and Roxy for being a prominent ally for the community and equal rights," said Mark Fernandes, chairman of the Pride board of directors. For this very special issue, I sat down with Olympic medalist Grand Marshal Gus Kenworthy to discuss what Pride means to him, living as an openly gay athlete and competing in the Olympics. Gus won the silver medal in slopestyle in the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi Russia. Gus and his boyfriend Matthew Wilkas also made headlines around the world during the recent 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, when Matthew gave Gus a good-luck kiss before a qualifying run that was caught on camera by NBC and carried the world over. I also had the pleasure of chatting with EMMY Award winner and Ally Grand Marshal Roxanne Vargas about working on television and her passionate support of the LGBTQ community. Amongst many topics, we discussed Roxanne's advocacy work and what it means to be the 10th anniversary Miami Beach Gay Pride Ally Grand Marshal. In Top Trax, Wire Magazine music writer DJ FR8-O caught up to Grammy-nominated singer Taylor Dayne. Taylor shared her excitement about performing during the 10th anniversary Miami Beach Gay Pride and her love for the LGBTQ community. Miami Beach Gay Pride has indeed come a long way since its inception 10 years ago. It is now a week-long celebration featuring many events, and over 125 LGBTQ-friendly vendors and businesses. Pride also includes national and local celebrities, musical performances, refreshments, food and a family-friendly play area. Miami Beach Gay Pride went from a local event to a major Gay Pride recognized around the world, that has included A-list celebrities such as Ross Mathews, Bebe Rexha, Mario Lopez, Elvis Duran, Iggy Azalea, Jordin Sparks, Gloria Estefan and Adam Lambert. Enjoy this year's festivities!

A GOLDEN EVENT

By Michael Bustamante

TEAM GOLD PARTNERS WITH ST. ROCH MARKET TO HOST AIDS WALK FUNDRAISER he 30th Annual AIDS Walk Miami will take place on April 22, and part of its success comes from the grassroots efforts of local community leaders and organizations. For the second year in a row, Team Gold from Hotel Gaythering's sports league (teamgold.us) has rallied to support AIDS Walk by hosting multiple fundraising events, including happy hours, whiskey tastings, and a party at the hot new St. Roch Market in the Design District on Thursday, April 19 from 7-10 p.m. This year, their efforts are being supported by Avita Pharmacy, which has offered to match any donations made from April 1-22 up to $2,500. Wire Magazine sat down with Team Gold members Thomas Barker and Yaniv Cohen to learn more about their fundraising efforts and the AIDS Walk Pre-Walk Party at the St. Roch Market.

Michael Bustamante: How did you personally get involved with AIDS Walk 2018? Thomas Barker: I have unfortunately had a number of friends find out they're HIV positive. Although every situation is a little different, every experience begins with a fear of the unknown. AIDS Walk raises much needed funds to support Care Resource, which has continually helped my friends navigate through their fear of the unknown and get access to healthcare and treatments they would otherwise not have.

MB: What have you guys done to support AIDS Walk? TB: We have partnered with Hôtel Gaythering to host two fundraising events – an AIDS Walk Happy Hour and a Whisgay Tasting with Woodford Reserve. With their support, we have raised over $8,000. Our next big event will be in partnership with the new St. Roch Market in the Design District.

MB: How did St. Roch Market get involved with AIDS Walk? Yaniv Cohen: When St. Roch heard about my team's effort in raising money for AIDS Walk, MB: What do you hope to accomplish this year they offered to help me, as I'm part of the Market. Working with Thomas, we came up with with AIDS Walk? an idea of hosting a pre-walk party to celebrate AIDS Walk and all the participants, while still TB: One of the most amazing things about be- raising money through St. Roch sales and recruiting more people to walk with us. ing in the Gaythering's Sports League is the opportunity to connect with people. Olympic Medalist

GUS KENWORTHY From Top Freeskier to Miami Beach Gay Pride Grand Marshal By Rafa Carvajal

s a proud sponsor of the 10th anniversary Miami Beach Gay Pride, Wire Magazine sat down with Olympic silver medalist Gus Kenworthy, this year's Pride Grand Marshal, to chat about his life, career, being gay, and leading this year's Pride parade.

Gus first represented the United States in the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia as a 23-year-old athlete, and proudly won the silver medal in slopestyle. Gus and his boyfriend Matthew Wilkas also made headlines around the world during the recent 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, when Matthew gave Gus a good-luck kiss before a qualifying run that was caught on camera by NBC and carried the world over. Besides his Olympic success, Gus has reached the top of his sport and earned seven World titles and five X Games Medals. He is indeed one of the top freeskiers in the world, and one of a handful of athletes to regularly earn top honors in slopestyle, halfpipe and big air events. In 2015, Gus came out as a proud gay man on the cover of ESPN The Magazine, garnering enthusiastic support globally, and making him even more marketable for endorsement deals than before. Rafa Carvajal: What are you most looking forward to about being the 10-year anniversary Miami Beach Gay Pride Grand Marshal? Gus Kenworthy: I've never been to Florida and I've heard nothing but good things about Miami Beach, so I'm excited to make it down there. I think I'm most looking forward to the beautiful men, the beautiful weather and obviously the beautiful celebration of Pride! #14 2018 WIREMAG.COM 11

RC: What does Pride mean to you, and why do you think it is so important to celebrate Pride? GK: Pride means owning who you are and wanting to share yourself with the world. I think it's important to celebrate Pride because for so long, and still today in many parts of the world, LGBTQ people have been forced to live in fear for their safety and being "out" and "proud" weren't even options.

"I AM GAY. I AM AN ATHLETE. I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO HIDE ANY PART OF MY IDENTITY." - GUS KENWORTHY

RC: Were you ever worried that being openly gay would have a negative effect on your career, and why? GK: Yes. Unlike other sports, I don't get paid to ski by a team or federation. My income is based off endorsement deals and those are gotten based off my "image" and presence in the sport. I was worried that being out would isolate me or make me less marketable. In fact, it's done just the opposite. RC: Why do you think it is so important to live your life as an openly gay athlete? GK: Because that is who I am. I am gay. I am an athlete. I shouldn't have to hide any part of my identity. RC: What advice would you give to young people struggling with their identity, coming out and the pressures from society? GK: I would encourage anybody and everybody, whether they're LGBTQ or not, to live their life as honestly and authentically as possible. Take time to recognize who you are and the things that make you that person. Embrace those facts about yourself and then share them with the world! There's nothing more fulfilling than getting to live your truth, and I think only to be able to compete. It was just really unfortunate timing. In the end, I was able to ski but it wasn't at full intensity and I wasn't able to do what I went there to do. It's ok though, it's all then can you hope to find happiness. part of the sport. RC: How did you prepare for this year's Winter RC: What is the best part of being an Olympic silver medalist? Olympics? GK: I trained a lot. Both on hill and in the gym. GK: The opportunities that have presented themselves to me because of it. I pushed myself to work on tricks that scared me RC: What are your future career plans? and pushed through injuries all season long. GK: I'm not totally sure. I'm planning on skiing this next winter in only a handful of events: The RC: What were the biggest challenges that you Dew Tour, X Games, World Championships and the U.S. Grand Prix, and seeing how those go, how I'm feeling, and kind of just play it by ear. The next Winter Olympics are four years faced during competition? GK: I broke my thumb the day before my event away and that's a long time and a lot of skiing, training, sacrifice and injury that would be in Korea, fell on my hip the day before that and required to make it there, so I'm not 100% sure if I'm up for that for a third time – we'll see got a massive hematoma on my hip. It looked though. like a grapefruit on my hip and it had to be drained. I was limping around all day, and up RC: What else would you like to share with Wire Magazine readers? until my event I wasn't even sure I was going GK: Follow me and my dog Beemo on Instagram: @guskenworthy and @beemopup.

RC: Why did you decide to be a part of Miami Beach Gay Pride this year? GK: I've had so much fun at Pride celebrations in other cities that when I was asked to be the Grand Marshal for Miami Beach Pride, I agreed without even really knowing what I was signing up for. I think it's going to be amazing!

ROXANNE VARGAS EMMY Award Winner & Miami Beach Gay Pride Ally Grand Marshal By Rafa Carvajal

any of us know Roxanne Vargas from both her television work and her passionate support of the LGBTQ community for many years. Roxanne is an EMMY Award winner, the host of NBC 6's "6 in the Mix," an NBC 6 weekend anchor, a frequent Spanish contributor for NBC 6's sister station Telemundo 51, and a beloved Miami Beach Gay Pride Parade emcee. Wire Magazine sat down with Roxanne to discuss her advocacy for the LGBTQ community and what it means to be the 10th anniversary Miami Beach Gay Pride Ally Grand Marshal.

Rafa Carvajal: What do you enjoy the most about working on TV and NBC 6? Roxanne Vargas: It's all about the people. The people who I serve in this community, and the people who I work with at NBC 6 and Telemundo 51. To tell the stories of my community is the ultimate responsibility and privilege, and it is so rewarding when I meet people face to face, out and about! My colleagues and friends are incredible professionals – and just really good people! Our job is a tough one, but knowing that we all support each other and have the same goal in mind, makes it easier to get the job done.

RC: How did you get involved with Miami Beach Gay Pride? RV: It was so organic. I raised my hand, I wanted to cover Miami Beach Gay Pride. Gloria Estefan and Kenny Ortega had been named Grand Marshals for that year. Who isn't a fan of Gloria and Kenny? I had been following the progress of their film, A Change of Heart, and was excited about the film's message and release. TAYLOR DAYNE TELLS IT TO MIAMI BEACH PRIDE nytime I hear Taylor Dayne belt out one of her legendary dance hits like "Tell It To My Heart" or "Prove Your Love," it's not unusual to catch me singing along, moving to the beat or both. And don't even get me started on her heart-wrenching slow jams, "Love Will Lead You Back" and "I'll Always Love You!" Whether its beat or ballads, there's no doubt that this diva can command any room – large or small. Ever since she exploded onto the scene in 1987 with her big hair, big attitude and even bigger voice, the Grammy-nominated singer has been one of the LGBTQ community's most loyal supporters; unleashing addictive club anthems, headlining at Pride events around the globe and even performing the official theme song of the 2010 Gay Games, "Facing a Miracle." This weekend the unstoppable artist will be proving her love for us on the shores of Miami Beach as we celebrate our community's most anticipated event of the year – Miami Beach Gay Pride.

DJ FR8-O: You've performed at quite a few Pride events throughout your career. How does it feel to finally be doing Miami Pride for the first time and for its 10th anniversary? Taylor Dayne: I'm excited to be a part of this year's Miami Beach Pride. I have had many a fun and lovely time in Miami over the last 25 years, watching the city grow.

Having met her backstage in the mid-90's just before she took the stage at my favorite gay club, my teenage self was once again feeling giddy at the thought of having a more in-depth convo with one of my all-time favorite idols; and she did not disappoint. Here's what she had to say about her Miami Beach Pride debut, what surprises she has in store for us, and what she is most proud of.

Brian had his HIV under control with medication. But smoking with HIV caused him to have serious health problems, including a stroke, a blood clot in his lungs and surgery on an artery in his neck. Smoking makes living with HIV much worse. You can quit.

HIV alone didn’t cause the clogged artery in my neck. Smoking with HIV did. Brian, age 45, California

DF: You're known for your classic hits, but we love your surprise club releases too. Can we expect any new "surprises" at your Pride performance? Maybe a little 10th Anniversary present? TD: Many a surprise for 2018! Meaning this is my 30 year anniversary celebration. So, be ready! DF: Last summer I saw you perform at Chicago Pride – in the rain – and you still look and sound flawless! How do you stay in shape, physically and vocally? TD: Yes, I remember Chicago Pride. The rain was wild! My shoes had to go! As the rain

kept coming down, I just felt like we all were part of the whole and were sticking through it. So let the rain come! The show will go on. I felt wonderful. There's no magic bullet, I work on diet, exercise and work with alternative modalities that help me feel 25 and have the energy, ha-ha. DF: What do you do on your downtime when you're not on tour? TD: Read, sleep, Netflix, hike, family time, friends, breathe, and take an exploring trip once a year. DF: You haven't done much TV or film in a while. Do you plan on ever flexing your acting muscles again? TD: I did more theatre in the last three years, musical theatre and music. I've been recording and writing. My focus for 2018 is to release new music, reinterpret, reinvigorate and reinforce my branding and marketing. DF: If you could go back in time 10 years, what would you say to your younger self? TD: Enjoy the ride! I feel like I do, but at times it's natural that I get overwhelmed. "Single Mom Syndrome." DF: Where do you want to be 10 years from now? TD: Oh honey, on my yacht, relaxing along

the coast of Cinque de Terre, or in my little cafe in Portofino after my concerts earlier that week in the open amphitheater in Taormina, Italy. DF: While you're in Miami, will you be taking some time to soak up the sun? Maybe a mojito (or two)? TD: …or looking at a property or two and dragging my mom with me. DF: Your kids are your #1 pride and joy, but what else are you most proud of? TD: Yes, I'm truly proud of them, and I'm proud of us! We're a family against the odds, and I feel grateful I still have the energy and fortitude to recognize that and appreciate our good moments together. DF: What would you like to say to the fans who will be celebrating 10 years of Miami Pride with you on April 8? TD: Keep doing you! Keep doing good! With love, Taylor.

Taylor Dayne Performance

Live on the Miami Beach Gay Pride Main Stage Sunday, April 8 at 9 p.m. Lummus Park Ocean Drive & 12th St., Miami Beach

DF: The LGBTQ community have been your biggest fans over the years, and you have been one of our biggest advocates in return. So, thank you for that! What do you think about the strides we've made over the last decade? TD: Thank you as well. I've enjoyed such incredible support and enthusiasm from the LGBTQ community for over 28 years. Celebration is key. While knocking down doors is essential, growing families help growing communities prosper. That's what I've been able to witness through the last couple of decades; watching LGBTQ marriages become families and have children, and communities flourish.
