10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. | Interwire Exhibits Open
8:45 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. | Welcome & Introductory Remarks
10:30 a.m. - 11:10 a.m. “A Three-Dimensional Analysis of Wire Breaks,” by E. Henry Chia
Gary L. Spence, Encore Wire Corp., USA
8:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. “The Two-Roll Rolling Process for Long Products,” by Bruce V. Kiefer, Siemens Industry Inc., USA
A large body of knowledge has been created on the hot rolling of many different materials, shapes, and sizes, with increasing speed and accuracy. This paper discusses the history and advancement of the two-roll hot rolling mill technology, and some of the critical aspects of the process for the production of ferrous and nonferrous long products. In addition, it provides a general overview of typical nonferrous and ferrous rolling mills and some background on the selection of pass sequences used to produce rounds, flats, and other shapes of long products.
9:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. “Strategy for Controlling Aluminum Rolling Lubricants,” by Graham Stratford, General Cable Corp., Canada
Careful control and balancing of lubricant emulsion parameters are necessary for high-quality, high-productivity rolling of concast aluminum rod. This paper discusses the key parameters of soluble oil emulsion systems and how they are controlled at a commercial facility to meet the needs of a wide variety of alloys and products.
The presenter shows and discusses the failure mechanisms of copper and aluminum wire breaks in 3-D.
11:10 a.m. - 11:40 a.m. “Documentation, Analysis, and Traceability of Eddy Current Inspection Results With Computer-Based Instrumentation,” by Hari Muthuswami and Tommie L. Nilsson, Foerster Instruments Inc., USA
While detectability is the first priority in inspection systems, the inspection instrumentation industry now has more responsibility to enable the use of these systems as more than “Go / No Go” instruments. This paper discusses the trend and importance of documentation, analysis, and traceability in inspection systems and eddy current systems in particular. It also discusses the NDT manufacturing industry’s role not only to respond to the needs of users, but also to understand the customer industry and invest in and offer both hardware and software solutions.
11:40 a.m. - 12:10 p.m. “Brief Overview of Analytical Methods with Special Focus on Spark Atomic Emission Spectroscopy for the Analysis of Copper and Aluminum Base Materials,” by Brad Cooley, Thermo Fisher Scientific, USA
This presentation offers an overview of instrumentation and methods, sample preparation, and analysis. Analytical performances are highlighted for various Cu and Al base alloyed and pure materials.
9:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. “Management and Control Strategies for Hot Rolling Emulsions,” by Bruce Calvert, RichardsApex Inc., USA
Copper rod rolling lubricant parameters and control limits are discussed as they relate to performance criteria. Differences between mineral oil-based emulsifiable lubricants and synthetics are considered.
12:10 p.m. - 12:30 p.m. Closing Remarks
