Introduction Dear Student Welcome to Winton Community Academy Options Booklet. This is your guide to KS4 options, and you should read it carefully. Unfortunately, the options evening where you would have been explained the option process and have the opportunity to discuss possible option choices with teachers is not possible during this current climate. However, please follow the option presentation videos attached in the options pack which will explain what you will need to know and what you will need to do. If you have any questions regarding this process, please follow the questions link below and email the teacher contact should you have any questions regarding a particular subject.

This year the option process has changed very slightly, Winton Community Academy is committed to delivering the most suitable curriculum for every single student and believe in the importance of providing a substantial and broad curriculum for every child. This means in addition to English, Maths and Science which are compulsory subjects you are required to pick four additional subjects to study in year 10.

As you will see there are four option blocks. Please choose one subject from each block plus a second choice. In addition to the four option subjects, you will need to follow some ‘core’ subjects throughout year 10 and 11. Over the next few weeks you will need to make some really important choices about your future.

To help you make the right decisions you need to: • • • • • •

Email your teachers to find out which subjects are more suited to you.

Ask the careers advisor for subject advice.

Only choose a subject if you are interested in it, really enjoy it and are good at it.

Not be guided by your friends’ choices or because you think a certain teacher will be teaching you.

Once you are ready to select your options you can submit your choices online via the Google form which has been attached to this booklet. Due to the current situation regarding Covid-19 we have arranged this process to allow you to submit your option choices from home.

Remember this booklet is designed to help you make informed choices about the subjects you wish to study at examination in Years 10 and 11.

The choices that you make now will impact your future pathways so make sure that you look ahead to college and university before you make these vital decisions.

Key stage 4 Curriculum 2021 – 2023 When you fill in your options form online you will automatically be sent to the option subjects available and most suitable for you to follow.

Which subjects will I be taking in Year 10?

There are a number of subjects which are compulsory, these are: • • • •

English Mathematics Science Physical Education (Non examination subject)

In addition to the compulsory subjects, you will need to choose four further ‘options’ subjects from the list shown on page 5.

How do I choose my subjects?

You should consider which subjects you enjoy and what you are good at. You should also start to think about what you want to do when you leave Winton Community Academy and which qualifications you need.

If you are considering a traditional ‘academic’ route through QMC, BCOT, Peter Symonds or Andover and then onto University your options should include a Humanities such as History or Geography and a Modern Foreign Language such as French or Spanish.

If you are considering going into work or following a vocational qualification after you leave Winton Community Academy, then one of the vocational courses that Winton provide might be more suitable.

Students are strongly advised to choose a range of subjects which provide them with a broad and balanced curriculum over the next 2 years.

What is the difference between a GCSE and a BTEC? We are all fairly familiar with the GCSE (General Certificate of Education) which is a traditional route through KS4 and is assessed through coursework and examinations based on the knowledge and skills you have developed on the course.

A BTEC is a work-related qualification suitable for a wide range of students. They provide a practical, real world approach to learning alongside a theoretical background.

BTECs are exam-based qualifications but involve more coursework and practical work.

Each BTEC is made up of units. In order to complete each unit, students must achieve against a set of prescribed outcomes. The assessment criteria address theory with practical exercises. The assessment process is ongoing, so it allows the student to analyse and improve their own performance through their course in much the same way as they would in a real workplace. The projects that students undertake form the basis of their unit results which are graded as a Pass, a Merit or a Distinction.

You will find out more information about the different BTEC’s later in this booklet.

These subjects would suit students who would be looking to follow an academic pathway through to university. If you have not been offered one of these subjects and would like to be considered, please contact me to discuss this further.

Once you have watched the relevant videos and read the information regarding the subjects offered to you please follow the link below which will take you to the google form. You will be required to pick a first and a second subject from each block. Every effort will be made to provide you with your first subject choice, however subjects and blocks may change subject to student numbers and staffing allocations. You must also be aware that due to curriculum constraints you are unable to pick both Art and Graphics.

Mathematics (CORE) Course Details: The Edexcel GCSE specifications in mathematics provides a broad, coherent, satisfying and worthwhile course of study.

It will enable you to develop confidence in the subject, improve your problem-solving skills, encourage a positive attitude and help you recognise the importance of mathematics in your own lives and to society.

Assessment Details: Examination Board:

Two tiers are available: Foundation and Higher • • • • •

Each student is permitted to take assessments in either the Foundation tier or the Higher tier.

The qualification consists of three equally weighted written examination papers either Foundation tier or Higher tier.

Paper 1 is a non-calculator assessment, and a calculator is allowed for Paper 2 and Paper 3.

Each paper is 1 hour and 30 minutes long.

Each paper is out of 80 marks.

EDEXCEL GCSE Equivalent: 1 Assessment: Exam: 100 %

Skills Developed: The assessments will cover the following content areas: 1 Number 4 Geometry and measures 2 Algebra 5 Probability 3 Ratio, proportion and rates of change 6 Statistics Students will be encouraged to develop in all these key areas and develop the following mathematical skills in a variety of contexts.

• Fluent knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts.

• Acquire, select and apply mathematical techniques to solve problems.

• Reason mathematically, make deductions and inferences, and draw conclusions.

• Comprehend, interpret and communicate mathematical information in a variety of forms appropriate to the information and context.

Progression Post 16: This course is essential for AS level Mathematics. It is also extremely useful in helping students who embark on any AS or A level Science, especially Physics. The data handling aspect of Mathematics also helps with any statistical element of AS courses such as Psychology or Economics.

Science Trilogy Course Details: We believe that science has something to offer every student. Therefore, the Science department will be teaching the AQA Science Trilogy. This course which is new is taught in three separate modules consisting of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. This qualification gives students a good foundation in science regardless of whether they would like to continue studying science at college. Those students who would like to pursue science A-levels at college, however, can do so with this qualification.

Assessment Details: There are six papers: two biology, two chemistry and two physics. Each of the papers will assess knowledge and understanding from distinct topic areas.

The papers will be Tiered foundation and higher and each paper will be an hour and 15mins consisting of multiple choice, structured, closed short answer, and open response.

Examination Board: AQA GCSE Equivalent: 2 Assessment:

Exam: 100 %

Skills Developed: Students will develop investigative skills that will prepare them to conduct their own investigation on a given topic. They will be expected to be able to design an investigation, make measurements and record data as well as present the data and draw any conclusions from the data that are appropriate.

Progression Post 16: This course is essential preparation for students who wish to go on to study Science post 16 and has to be completed by students as part of there Keystage 4 studies

English Language Course Details: GCSE English Language focuses on students’ ability to interpret, analyse and evaluate fiction and non-fiction texts, and to plan and develop their own extended writing. You will read a wide range of extracts, exploring the writers’ viewpoints and identifying the methods that they use to manipulate or engage the reader. You will also develop your own voice as a writer and have opportunities to articulate and express your own opinions and ideas on a range of subjects.

Assessment Details: Assessment will be by external examination, which will take place in the summer of Year 11. Students will be awarded a level of 1-9 with 9 being the highest. There will be 2 examination papers. Students will be assessed in the 3 main areas of:

English Literature Course Details: GCSE English Literature enables students to read and think critically, to interpret texts and to explore ideas from different cultures and periods in history, and to respond in an informed, analytical way. This is a challenging course and prepares students for future study in a wide range of subjects, as well as enriching students’ cultural knowledge and experiences.

Assessment Details: Assessment will be by external examination, which will take place in the summer of Year 11. Students will be awarded a level of 1-9 with 9 being the highest. Five per cent of the marks will be allocated to accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar.

There will be 2 examination papers. Students will be required to respond to set texts and poems studied throughout the course, and to analyse and compare two unfamiliar poems.

A strong pass in English literature also demonstrates the ability to understand a wide range of challenging texts, essential for a wide range of courses including law, economics, philosophy and politics.

Animal Care CLICK HERE TO SEE THE SUBJECT VIDEO Course Details: This qualification is for learners who want to start a career in animal care. It is an ideal qualification for learners intending to progress directly to employment in animal care, or to an animal care apprenticeship.

Skills Developed: This qualification has been developed in consultation with employers in the animal care sector to ensure it enables learners to develop the skills and behaviours that will give them the best opportunity to be successful when applying for work. All the content of the qualification is mandatory and relates directly to the skills, knowledge and behaviours expected by employers in the animal care sector. The areas learners will cover include: • practical animal health • animal biology and health • animal care work placement • animal welfare • animal behaviour assessment and safe handling • feeding, accommodation and moving animals.

Learners will also enhance their broader skills in literacy and numeracy, which will be invaluable in supporting progression in other areas. In addition, they will develop transferable technical and practical skills in communication (working with colleagues, customers and clients), and research and project work (providing you with an opportunity to demonstrate your reflective practice by suggesting alternative approaches to a problem).

Progression Post 16: Achieving this qualification will give learners an advantage when applying for a job in animal care. The types of jobs they will be ready for are: • animal care worker • animal care assistant in an animal business, charity or wildlife trust • kennel or cattery worker.

When studied as part of a full study programme, this qualification also gives learners a sound basis to progress further within the animal sector to a Level 3 qualification such as a Level 3 National Diploma in Animal Management.

Art CLICK HERE TO SEE THE SUBJECT VIDEO Course Details: The Art & Design course is run over 2 years with a GCSE qualification by Edexcel obtained in the final year.

Students in Year 9 have the opportunity to experience a wide range of skills which act as a foundation to further develop their independent work in Years 10 and 11. These include drawing, painting, clay, textiles, sculpture, printing and 3D modelling. Throughout the course there are various opportunities to take part in local and national competitions as well as a variety of visits to galleries and exhibitions. Art & Design is a valuable choice for any student wishing to pursue a career in the creative industries which is now the fastest growing business sector in the UK.

Assessment Details: Unit 1: (Portfolio of Work) This is made up of different assignments that will make up the coursework element of the course (60%).

Unit 2 (Externally set Task) This is a 10 hour controlled assessment (40%).

Research time is available for the controlled assessment along with some guidance.

Pupils work will be submitted for moderation by Edexcel.

Skills Developed: People who work in art and design have many specialist skills. The path they follow to gain these skills includes learning in very different areas of art and design. Students have the opportunity to work in both 2D and 3D where they develop traditional techniques such as drawing and painting as well as experimenting in other areas such as mixed media, digital and portraiture.

Progression Post 16: The GCSE will allow students access to build up their portfolio by continuing on other courses such as a Level 3 BTEC or A Level Art and Design. This opens up an opportunity for students to challenge themselves by trying something else within the Art and Design course.

There are many alternative courses students can opt for at Post 16 and it very much depends on the specialist areas within art and design they decide to take.

Careers within the Arts or Creative industry include: Architectural Design, Advertising & Marketing, Magazine layouts, Independent Artist, Graphic Design, Textiles, Fashion, Tattoo design, Illustration, Web Design, Interior Design etc.

Child Development CLICK HERE TO SEE THE SUBJECT VIDEO Course Details: This course enables students the opportunity to acquire knowledge, skills and understanding about the birth and development of a child from conception through to the age of 5. Students will follow a structured course looking at all the aspects of the development of the child. The controlled assessment Units involve students working independently. They will need to present their work electronically.

Assessment Details: Assessment details: Students will be assessed in 3 areas 1. Written Paper: Health and well-being for child development. 1 hour and 15 minutes.

2. Controlled Assessment: Understanding the equipment and nutritional needs of children from birth to five years.

3. Controlled Assessment: Understand the development of a child from birth to five years.

Skill Developed: • Understanding reproduction and the roles and responsibilities of parenthood • Understanding antenatal care and the preparation of birth • Understanding postnatal checks, postnatal provision and the conditions for development • Understanding how to recognise, manage and prevent childhood illnesses • Know about child safety • Understanding the equipment and nutritional needs of children from birth to five years.

Computer Science CLICK HERE TO SEE THE SUBJECT VIDEO Course Details: Computer Systems Component 1 - Study how processors work; Investigate computer memory and storage; Explore modern network layouts and how they function; Build skills in the ever important realm of cyber security; Investigate how types of software are used within computer systems; Stretch wider comprehension of how computers and computing affect ethical, legal, cultural and environmental issues.

Assessment Details: There are two exam papers at the end of the syllabus, one focusing on computer systems and one with a focus on computational thinking, algorithms and programming. Each paper lasts 1.5 hours and is worth 50% of the total GCSE.

You will develop as a performer and broaden your understanding of performance work and influences. You will gain a realistic overview of dance repertoire; you will learn about the skills and techniques of dancing. This component will help you to understand the requirements of being a dancer across a range of styles.

You will develop knowledge and understanding of a range of performance styles and disciplines. You will look at elements such as roles, responsibilities and the application of relevant skills and techniques. You will broaden your knowledge through observing existing repertoire and by learning about the approaches of practitioners and how they create and influence performance material.

Progression Post 16: Study of the qualification as part of Key Stage 4 learning will help learners to make more informed choices for further learning, either generally or in this sector. The choices that a learner can make post-16 will depend on their overall level of attainment and their performance in the qualification.

Learners who achieve at Level 2 across their Key Stage 4 learning might consider progression to: • A Levels as preparation for entry into higher education in a range of subjects • study of a vocational qualification at Level 3, such as a BTEC National in Performing Arts, which prepares learners to enter employment or apprenticeships, or to move on to higher education by studying a degree in the performing arts or production arts areas.

Drama CLICK HERE TO SEE THE SUBJECT VIDEO Course Details: GCSE drama helps students develop both new and existing skills in a range of performance and/or technical disciplines. This is a qualification that will engage students through encouraging creativity, focusing on practical work which reflects twenty-first century theatre practice and developing skills that will support progression to further study of drama and a wide range of other subjects.

This specification offers students the opportunity to specialise in acting or technical theatre.

This course is a solid grounding for actors aspiring to follow a career in performance.

Engineering CLICK HERE TO SEE THE SUBJECT VIDEO Course Details: Students will learn about: - Responding to a client brief - Generating designs - Engineered products - Manufacturing of engineered products )including electronics and PCB manufacture) - The application and impact of new technologies - Systems - Testing & Investigation Assessment Details: Unit 1: External Assessment Written Paper 2 hours = 60% of the total marks Unit 2: Internal Assessment Practical Engineering. 40% of the total marks Students will undertake a single ‘design and make’ activity which will arise from investigating a brief set by the exam board. Students will have approximately 30 hours to complete the task that will consist of a working prototype and a concise portfolio including sector-specific drawings and an evaluation of their product.

Skills Developed: Students will be able to develop their precision engineering skills by having access to engineering software such as Solidworks and 2D CAD. This will give them a good overview of what a technology driven design process is like in industry.

They will be able to see their designs through to production using cutting edge technology with industry standard laser and plasma cutters and 3D printing.

French CLICK HERE TO SEE THE SUBJECT VIDEO Course details The course involves developing the ability to communicate and understand the French language and culture through the study of a range of different topic areas such as ‘travel and tourism’ and ‘free time’. An increased value is placed on the ability of students to communicate their own ideas in both written and spoken French, with spontaneity in speaking a key element.

Employers across the world are placing an increasing emphasis on language skills amongst their workforces.

Geography CLICK HERE TO SEE THE SUBJECT VIDEO Course Details: In this subject we aim to develop students understanding of modern contemporary geographical issues facing the world today. Not only do we aim to enhance students understanding traditional human and physical geography, we also analyse our relationship with the world, with a focus on the issue of sustainability.

A one hour and 30-minute exam on Physical Geography – the challenge of natural hazards, the living world and UK physical landscapes (35% of final grade)

Why study Geography?

Geography is a vitally important subject for those students who have a keen interest in the world around them.

In today’s global community it is paramount that we understand how we are connected to the world around us.

Geography is a traditional academic subject respected by employers and colleges alike.

What would this subject enable me to do when I leave Winton?

GCSE Geography paves the way for students to naturally follow a path into AS/A2 Geography and in the longer term on to degree level.

A Geography qualification at any level continues to be a regarded qualification by colleges and employees. It demonstrates a particular level of skill in many areas which can them be applied elsewhere.

Often the Tech Award is a broader, more detailed exploration of a sector proving a basis for a range of post-16 options: Content Focus: - Focus on developing commercially focused art and design skills.

According to the British Hospitality Association, hospitality and catering is Britain’s fourth largest industry and accounts for around 10% of the total workforce. Since 2010, over 25% of all new jobs have been within the hospitality and catering sector with the majority of new roles falling within the 18-24 age groups. The ability to plan, prepare and present food is an essential skill within the hospitality and catering industry. Assessment Details: The Cambridge Nationals in Sport Studies consist of four units: Two units are mandatory; these focus on the contemporary issues in sport and developing sports skills.

Photography CLICK HERE TO SEE THE SUBJECT VIDEO Course Details: The Photography course is run over 2 years with a GCSE qualification by AQA obtained in the final year. Students are taught all of the skills and knowledge to complete the GCSE including composition, cameras, lighting, editing and research.

Students will focus on 3 main areas of study, Portraiture, Location and Fashion. In addition to this, students will learn how to digitally edit their images and incorporate the drawing element into their coursework, a new requirement for the GCSE. Students have the opportunity to exhibit work at various points of the year and promote their creativity by entering local/national competitions. There are also a variety of trips and visits for location shoots that students can experience, from London to a 7-day visit to New York.

Assessment Details: Students will be required to produce several presentations of work, showing development of skills and examples of photographic work.

All work will be annoted with comments on how it was produced and critiqued for improvements.

The 3 areas of study will make up the coursework element of the course (60%) followed by a 10 hour controlled assessment (40%). Research time is available for the controlled assessment along with guidance.

Pupils work will be submitted for moderation by AQA.
