On this day only, the first 200 people will receive a free train ride. Trolley tickets are $5 and the trolleys and trains depart from City Hall. The Festival will continue from Dec 1 through 31. Trolleys will run daily except Dec. 2, 21, 24, 25 and 31. Visitors can buy a dinner/concert/ trolley tour package for $12, which includes a barbecue dinner, entertainment and a trolley or train ride. Sweet dulcimer sounds at Green Gate Grove
By Henry Miller MISSION - Annette Sweet paused in between songs and asked Skip Shorb to “do his thing” a little louder – “this is the part when you can go loud,” she said. Sweet, Shorb and about another dozen
musicians are part of the “Dulcimers and More” acoustic musical group that practice and perform every Monday morning at 9:30 at Green Gate Grove Park in Mission. Sweet, Sandy Hurst, Barbara Porter
Annette Sweet leads the group through a song, playing her hand-crafted hammered dulcimer during Dulcimer and More’s weekly jam session at Green Gate Grove in Mission on Monday. Winter Texan Times Photo
and Tom Humphrey all play the hammered dulcimers, which lead the sound and combine with guitars, a fiddle, mountains dulcimers, a bodhran, a bass and a mandolin. Their sound is a smorgasbord of musical styles with a wide range, from Celtic to Calypso to Ragtime and even old-time country. Their sound, which is also wide ranging, is generally crisp, non-intrusive and extremely enjoyable. The group brings their skills from Green Gate Grove and some surrounding parks including Hidden Valley, McAllen Mobile, Retama Village and their neighbors at Bentsen Grove. Sweet has been coming to Mission from Michigan since 1994, where she first started playing the hammered dulcimer, known for its wide range of sounds, and being louder than the rest – especially with four of them playing in this particular setup. She attended a dance in Kentucky where the dulcimer was introduced to her. Despite not being a music reader, See Sweet Dulcimer pg. 22

‘A Tejano Christmas’ to be presented in RV resorts
The Pharr Community Theater is presenting the play “A Tejano Christmas Carol,” a new adaptation by Pedro Garcia from the famous Charles Dickens story “A Christmas Carol,” set in the Rio Grande Valley in the city of Pharr. The well-known Ebenezer Scrooge becomes Ezequiel Codos, the most powerful attorney in the entire region and a big time water broker and landowner. He’s so greedy that he sells large portions of
water rights from the Rio Grande causing catastrophe in the future, when the river goes dry and thousands are thirsty. In this hilarious dramatic story, Codos is visited by the ghost of the past who is La Rielera (a woman soldier) from the Mexican Revolution era, and by the ghost of the Christmas present who is a Zoot Suiter from the 1940s. Pearl Harbor, 911 attacks to be remembered Dec. 7
By Col. Frank Plummer (Ret.) The public is invited to attend the Pearl Harbor and 9/11 Twin Towers ceremony beginning at 10 hours 7 December 2016 at the Veterans War Memorial of Texas, 29th St. and Col. Plummer Dr., East of the McAllen Convention Center. Keynote speakers, McAllen High School band and choir and Zavala Elementary School choir will highlight the ceremony. This ceremony is one of the most important patriotic events of the American people. Its message reminds the American people of the consequences of unexpected armed attacks on American soils. The unexpected and sneak attack by Japanese naval aircraft at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on 7 December 1941 left the harbor littered with burning and damaged naval ships. The USS West Virginia, Arizona, California, Oklahoma and Utah ships were sunk and the Nevada was beached, to prevent it sinking. America’s ability
to protect its pacific allies and carry the fight to the shores of Japan was greatly reduced by these deadly attacks. America declared war on Japan, 8 December 1941 and entered the on-going WWII. At the end of the War, America had suffered 300,782 men and women killed in action, 682,801 wounded and 100,000 missing. The war ended on 28 September 1945. Americans pledged to never again allow a surprise attack again on US soil. On 11 September 2003, America’s perception of war was suddenly changed as passenger aircrafts with passengers aboard were hi-jacked by terrorists. The aircrafts were then crashed into and destroyed the Twin Tower buildings in New York City, and the Pentagon US Military Nerve Center, Washington, D.C. More people were killed in this 9/11 terrorist attack than were killed in Pearl Harbor. See PEARL HARBOR pg. 20

Market Barbecue offers variety of delicious barbecue
Just walk in the door of the new Market Barbecue, located at 4123 W. Expressway 83, and the aroma of delicious roasted meats wafting through the air makes patrons instantly hungry if they were not before! It is a delicious place to go and eat all kinds of barbecue. Sample brisket, chopped or sliced, pulled port, spare ribs, turkey, chicken. All meats are served with three flavors of barbecue sauce make on premises. They range from spicy to sweet. When Oscar and I visited Market Barbecue, I opted for the loaded potato filled with brisket while Oscar went for the three meat plate with two sides. He chose brisket, which he pronounced moist, pulled pork and spare ribs with meat so tender it was falling off the bone. Because we were doing a food review the manager also brought samples of the roasted chicken and turkey. All of the meats were tender and flavorful.
Eat the meat of choice with sides such as baked beans, slaw, corn-onthe-cob, the delicious creamed corn, mashed potatoes, crispy fried okra and more. I chose the fried okra, which was tender and fried to a golden brown. Oscar selected corn-on-thecob and baked beans. We also sampled their creamed corn which I found to be very tasty. Don’t’ forget the appetizers like nachos or the bacon-wrapped jalapeno filled with cream cheese and brisket. Oscar got one and really enjoyed it. Desserts include pecan, apple and pumpkin pies and chocolate cake. I went for the pecan pie and found it good while Oscar said his favorite was the apple. Or try the daily senior specials for just $7. They are served from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The Monday Special is a sausage and pulled pork Po Boy. Tuesday is a smoked sausage plate. Wednesday looked for the spare rib (4) plate.
Thursday’s special is a giant spud with the meat of choice. And on Fridays the special is a chicken plate. They are available for dine in or carry out. The pulled pork sandwich for $3 can be ordered all day long on Monday. On Tuesdays look for $5 nachos with brisket, pulled pork or chicken all day. Make a return trip Wednesday and have a Frito® pie with brisket for just $5 all day. Get two tacos and a side of slaw on Thursday all day long for just $5. Friday’s daylong special is a $5 spud with the smoked meat of choice or hickory smoked chicken with two sides and a drink for $9.99. For visiting grandchildren, Sundays there is one free child’s plate with every full priced adult meal purchased. No matter what meal is chosen, the meat is cooked to perfection. The meat on the ribs is falling off the bone tender, and the turkey is tender and juicy enough to be cut with a fork. The spuds are fresh, and the vegetables perfectly prepared. Since Texas is famous for it’s barbecue, treat yourself (and a few friends) to something different this year for Christmas. Market Barbecue will be offering barbecued honey hams or smoked bone-in hams and full briskets, and brisket meals with cornbread dressing, a choice of two sides and 12 sweet rolls. To order a Christmas Feast call (956) 688-8092. It’s really good eatin’!

From pg. 1 she fell in love with the sound and now knows close to 100 songs. Sweet has performed in the largest dulcimer festival in the country in Everette, Mich., where more than 175 of the hand-crafted instruments sounded at one time. “These are all handmade, not manufactured,” Sweet said. “I found my Luthier (maker and repairer of stringed instruments) in Michigan and my instrument is all hand carved, made of maple and has a floating sound board. That’s why it’s so much louder than the others.” J.D. “Skip” Shorb also used to play the hammered dulcimer but decided to find a new instrument to dabble with. He said when he was 12 or so he wanted to play the drums but it never happened. He’s not sure that’s why he picked up the Bodhran, an Irish hand held framed drum, but it’s something he enjoys. “Those hammered dulcimer folks are way better then me so I decided to pick something else out,” said Shorb, who has been coming to the park for 13 years from Arkansas. “I thought I’d give that a shot. I’m retired so I can do what I want but I have no idea why I picked it.” “That’s because he likes to pound on things all the time,” his wife Mary said from another room. “So it works out.” Shorb is one of those who is always

But pounding on things, as Mary said, hasn’t always been a viable solution – especially during his 28-year tenure in the Reserves and the U.S. Army as a nuclear missile tech. The nation thanks him for his service – and for not beating on any of those missiles. “I’m always playing or listening to music,” said Shorb, who resides in nearby Retama Village. “If not, I’m always reading – I’m a lifelong reader.” The Dulcimers And More originated at Paradise Park but at one point could no longer use the hall. Sweet re-organized the group and it has been perfecting its craft ever since. They can perform as a group about 40 songs and are learning more each year. “We love to expand our repertoire,” Sweet said. Sweet said the group is more than willing to take on new performers but there are some guidelines. The performer must be willing to play the type of music the group is interested in doing, they have to play an acoustic instrument – and they must be willing to put up with the mistakes, she joked. For information about the Dulcimers And More, call Sweet at (248) 921-6867. The practices/performances, from 9:30 to 11 a.m., are open to visitors.

MHM accepting entries for 11th Mission Quilt Show
Calling all quilters. It’s time to enter one of your creations in the Mission Quilt Show. The Mission Historical Museum is accepting entries beginning Nov. 29 for its 11th Annual Mission Quilt Show. Entries will be accepted in three categories: Hand-quilted bed quilts; Machine-quilted bed quilts; and Wall hangings. The show is open to all quilters, both Winter Texans and year-round residents. The quilts will be judged by a panel of independent judges, with ribbons awarded for first, second and third places in each category. Best-of-Show and Viewers’ Choice ribbons will also be awarded. Quilts and wall hangings must be ready to hang with a sleeve for display purposes. Entries are accepted on a first-in, first-accepted basis. Because of limited space, the museum reserves the right to close entries before the deadline. This will allow for the best possible presentation for all entries. Participants may submit only one item per person. Any quilt entered in this show within the past five years is not eligible for entry this year. Entries will be accepted at the Mission Historical Museum from Tuesday, Nov. 29, through Wednesday, Jan 4. Quilts will be accepted Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The museum will
be closed Dec. 23 through 26, and Jan 2. The exhibit opens on Saturday, Jan. 14 and runs through Saturday, Feb. 11. An Awards Reception and Turning of the Quilts program will take place at 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 10. Mission Historical Museum is located at 900 Doherty in downtown Mission. Admission is free. For more information, call the museum at 956-580-8646.
