My name is Winston Conklin and I am reaching out to you concerning a cause that is very dear to me and many other Chicago citizens. That is, the Ciccone Garden Project (CGP) – a community-run garden on the Southwest corner of Reynolds Rd. and Lyon Blvd. CGP started several years ago when a landlord offered the 1/16th acre lot connected to his property up to the community to turn into an after-school project for local children and adolescents. Since then, the garden has grown into a beautiful landmark for the neighborhood. Most importantly though, it has given many less-fortunate children something to be passionate about. Given the dedication to the project, you can understand how distraught we were when we learned that the landlord has plans to sell the property. This is especially upsetting because a potential buyer plans to purchase the lot and turn it into a parking lot – thus wiping out all the hard work that has meant so much to the project’s team. On behalf of everyone involved with CGP, we are requesting that the city purchase the lot from the landlord and donate it to the community. He has agreed to sell to the city before the developer. Then, the run-down building could be demolished and the entire 3/16th acre lot be incorporated into the garden. With that amount of space CGP could truly become an attraction in such an unattractive neighborhood. If given this opportunity, CGP would not let the city down. It’s remarkable that not only does this project create such a spectacular scene, but also creates hope and pride for those that lack such necessities in their young lives. We implore you to help us make the world a more beautiful and inspiring place, one lot at a time. With most sincere thanks, Winston Conklin and the CGP crew
