(Ages 6 to Adult) Adults and children age six and up will start building a piano-playing foundation in this four-week private-lesson package. The four half-hour lessons are for students new to The Piano Studio. Students will learn the basics of note reading and the fundamentals of how to move fingers on the piano keys. Teacher R. J. Carroll sets the pace of lessons according to each student’s age and ability. Parents observe their children’s lessons so they can support the children’s progress. The lessons are provided at The Piano Studio of Winchester at 207 Highland Ave. To practice at home, students need a piano, or students need a keyboard that has a slanted rack to hold music sheets upright. (If you do not have a keyboard, R. J. Carroll can advise you on how to get an appropriate keyboard if you contact him before registering for the class.) After registering with the Recreation Department, students call the teacher at 781-729-4347 to arrange a day and time for the lessons. In addition to the course fee paid to Winchester Recreation, there is a $13 fee payable directly to the teacher for learning materials. Fee: $99 781.721.7125

Basic Photography I: From Snapshots to Great Shots The difference between a snapshot and a great shot primarily depends on understanding a handful of basic principles and applying a few simple concepts. Learn what are the most common errors in photography and how to avoid them. We’ll discuss techniques for photographing people, events, scenes, and nature. I’ll also share with you my favorite locations. You will be begin using presented material immediately, starting with the first session. After an introduction to composition, you be offered a challenge.Next, there are two important eye-opening workshops that over the years have gotten best student reviews. These are conducted in the second and third sessions following an informational presentation. The first will teach you how to use amazing window light and overcome the trepidations of shooting portraits. I will be the practice target. The second workshop will reveal what the camera sees that you do not – a simple light-painting experiment that will introduce you to nighttime and long-exposure photography. I’ll give you the settings to use, and they are similar to shooting fireworks. Finally, in the last session, we’ll review, compare, and critique your results from the class challenge. The techniques used to compose and evaluate an image bring together how to balance listening and feeling with your right brain, while thinking and understanding with your left brain. You will find this to have an impact on your creativity and outlook well beyond the sphere of photography. nPresentation notes will be available on-line. Dates: Monday February 6th - Febraury 27th Time: 6:15pm to 8:45pm Prerequisites: none Limited to 10 participants Fee: 99.00 162-AM-01A

Basic Photography II: Getting your DSLR off the Auto Setting

“How did you do that?” That’s what others will ask you after taking this class. You’ll learn how to extend your photographic style, by using the light meter in your camera, taking control of the focus modes, and understanding the exposure triangle.Three workshops are designed to explore your creativity in new realms,First, is the most sought-after look in images: creating an out-of-focus background. This session is all about depth-of-field, bokeh, and best lenses for this effect. Second, is freezing time. We will revisit long exposure photography and it’s effects on capturing moving water, whether in daytime scenes, or in nighttime reflections, and learn what special filters are used to enhance effects.Third, is a workshop about how and when to use the two most common camera-assisted modes: Aperture Priority and Shutter [Time} Priority Understanding what ISO to use and how Aperture and Shutter speed all work together completes the introduction to understanding the Exposure Triangle. You will receive a calculator to use (like training wheels) to help you understand how they all fit together. Ultimately, in manual mode, you will rely on the meter in your camera and your creative inspiration to make compelling images. Weather permitting we may go out and shoot the Moon’s Face. -Bring your camera, your manual, and all your questions. Presentation notes will be available on-line. Date: Mondays, March 13th - April 3rd Time: 6:15pm to 8:45pm Prerequisites: a DSLR, Mirrorless 4/3rds, or digital camera with manual exposure control, Basic Photography I or equivalent Limited to 8 participants Fee: $99.00

Advanced Photography - Hands-On Workshop.

Do you have a basic understanding of ISO, Aperture, and Shutter Speed in Manual Mode but need practice to put your understanding to use? Have you gone beyond the Auto setting but need to better understand the histogram, exposure and focus modes? Do you want to understand how to use external flash? These sessions are designed to get you practice shooting - indoors and, weather permitting, outside while helping you understand what is going on in the camera. Four advanced topics will be covered. 1) Perfect Portraits – how to meter faces exactly, and how to set white balance perfectly for any light. We’ll also learn how to read a histogram and when you should absolutely use it. We’ll also review the exposure and autofocus modes plus the auto focus AREA modes. 2) How to take pictures at blue hour – get spectacular results by knowing when and how to shoot the city in evening light – we’ll go outside for this one at the 1st evening with good weather. 3) How to shoot Film Noir – “A style marked by a mood of pessimism, fatalism, and menace”. Often called “low-key” because of sharp dark shadows. We can use the lights in class and I’ll also show you how to do this with a speedlight. The trick is to set the stage and get the metering right. This is where you learn to think in black and white. .4 & 5) Understanding Flash – Your flash has it’s own metering system (besides the one in your camera). Learn how to use it to your best advantage. We’ll cover simple fill, how to match indoor with outdoor lighting simultaneously, the effect of varying the ISO, techniques for using a speedlight (and why you should own one). You will need to bring a digital SLR to class (please bring your manual too). A speed light is needed for session on flash. If you have a Nikon, you can use mine. I’ll also show you where and how to buy them at a discount. Bring all your questions too.

Date: Monday April 24th - May 22nd Time: 6:15-8:45pm Fee: $99.00

Prerequisites: DSLR or Mirrorless manual control digital camera with flash, and either Basic Photography II or comprehensive understanding of Exposure (f/ , speed, ISO).
