January Sees Contract Awards

Increase By 18.5 Percent contract awards this month with combined value of £3 billion. The largest contract award was the £2 billion Dogger Bank Creyke Beck 1.4GW Offshore Wind Farm. The second largest contract award was in London and was the £1 billion Silvertown Tunnel project for Transport for London to provide a new car crossing between Thamesmead and Beckton. Regional analysis indicates that London maintained its leading position, accounting for 32.5% of all construction contract awards. With attributable share of 26.6%, Yorkshire & Humber was the second largest region in January. With the two leading regions accounting for 59.1% of all awards this month, the remaining regions all attracted significantly smaller individual share (all under 10%) with Scotland and the East of England vying for third place with respective share of 6.5% and 6.4% of construction contract awards.

The value of all construction contracts awarded in January 2020 was £5.5 billion based on a threemonth rolling average. This is an increase of 18.5% on December 2019 and is also 2.1% ahead of January 2019. In the three-month period ending January 2020, total construction contract awards were valued at £15.6 billion which is 7.1% higher than the previous quarter and is also 5.1% higher than the comparable quarter ending January 2019. In January the number of construction contract awards

was 893 which is an increase of 95.4% on December 2019. The latest edition of the Economic & Construction Market Review from industry analysts Barbour ABI, highlights levels of construction contract values awarded across Great Britain. The largest sector this month was infrastructure with attributable share of 42.7% of awards with the residential sector in second place attracting share of 25.5%. The infrastructure sector accounted for the two largest

Confidence At Highest Level In Over A Decade

It’s been a busy start to 2020 and we expect that trend to continue as we head into the lucrative spring season and the rest of the year.

In welcome news for the UK economy and retail sector, a recent survey has revealed that consumer confidence in Britain has risen to its highest level in over a decade. The IHS Markit household finance index, which charts the perceptions of financial wellbeing among UK households, rose in February to its highest point since records began 11 years ago. February’s index score climbed to 47.6, compared to 44.6 in January, showcasing a growing positivity among UK consumers about their money and financial affairs. Whilst the index still falls short of the magic 50.0 – a score that indicates improving conditions that has not been surpassed since the financial crisis, it does point towards an increase in consumer spending. already putting their hands back in their pockets. According to the Office for National Statistics, shoppers returned to the high streets in January to help boost retail sales by 0.9%. It’s the strongest rise since March 2019, and provided welcome relief following December’s sharp decline of 0.5%. Barclaycard are reporting similar good news across plastic with consumer spending across their platforms rising by 3.9% in January alone. Roof window and rooflight maker VELUX has agreed a new partnership with UK’s Housing Design Awards 2020 competition. Founded by the UK Government, the Housing Design Awards were launched in 1948 in the same sitting of Parliament as the National Health Service, to reward better municipal post-war rebuilding. The Awards were extended to include private homes in 1960 by the then Prime Minister, Harold Macmillan. Sheerline Passes PAS24:2016 Sheerline Classic, the new residential aluminium window system from Garnalex has passed the PAS24:2016 security test with flying colours, defeating two test rigs on the way!

PAS24:2016 is designed to test the strength of windows and doors and their resistance to opportunistic break-in attempts. Testing requires each loading and locking point of a window to withstand a perpendicular applied load of 3kN (a kN or kilonewton is the equivalent of 300kg) and a parallel to plane load of 1kN. A maximum sized double side hung Sheerline window successfully passed both mechanical and manipulation tests with no issues at all. Having passed the tests successfully, Garnalex asked BSI’s technicians to carry out destructive testing to see just how strong the window system was. The results were described as ‘incredible’. Sheerline’s hinge side withstood the full loading capability of BSI’s hydraulic mechanical test rig of just over 10kN (over a metric tonne), holding the load for a minute without failure! The lock side of the window also achieved extraordinary results, withstanding 5kN of force before the lock failed. This was all the more impressive as the window had already been subjected to full mechanical and manipulation tests. In previous testing carried out at Archibald Kenrick & Sons test facility, Steve Williams, Kenrick’s Sales and Marketing Director was equally as impressed. “Having witnessed the new Sheer-

line window easily passing the required 3 kN standard, Garnalex asked us to test their new window to destruction to see what it could take. However we had to stop the test at 10 kN as we were concerned we would damage our test rig! Really impressive performance, and testimony to what the correct system and hardware combinations can achieve.” Phil Parry, Sheerline Testing and Standards Director, adds: “These results prove Sheerline’s Classic aluminium windows will set the new benchmark for strength and security for mainstream residential windows. Sheerline exceeded the required loads for PAS24:2016 by more than three times, to the amazement of the technical staff carrying out the testing. “Both window hinge and lock sides withstood loads in excess of the much more onerous PAS24:2016 door test where the perpendicular loads are 4.5kN, and even went beyond that required in EN1627-30. sheerline.com

£12M Facility Provides Window Of Opportunity

Secure Trust Bank Commercial Finance has supported UK Window Group with a £12m asset-based lending facility.

UK Window Group is a one-stop product, service and support solution provider for window and door trade, retail and new-build installers. The company has manufacturing capacity for more than 10,000 frames, 15,000 glass units and 500 composite doors each week and also offers support services, such as lead generation and technical installation advice, to a variety of customers across the UK. The group, which currently employs more than 1,100 staff, consists of five different businesses across six sites. This includes Duraflex, the extrusion arm of the business, Evolution, a high-end timber replacement window manufacturer, Techniglass a manufacturer of integrated glass

units, UKWG Composite Doors and Sevenday a national trade counter business with an expanding number of outlets across the country. UK Window Group is currently undergoing a turnaround following a management buyout from Masco Corporation in September 2019. The facility provided by Secure Trust Bank will further assist the turnaround, allowing the business to invest working capital into its future growth. The company is rolling out plans to expand its product range and also the growth of its network of Sevenday trade counters. The first part of the test consisted of pressure being applied to the corners and weak points at the front of the door by hydraulic rams. At the same time an opposing pulling force was applied from the back, the intention was to try and twist or warp the door to create a gap. With the hinge located lower down the doorframe this was a particularly crucial part of the testing, but the new 44mm reinforced door slab withstood the test.

PAS 24 OnArched Doors From Force 8

Force 8 has now achieved a PAS 24 on its arched door system, which includes its unique ‘onepiece bend’ frame and reinforced door slab. Force 8 says this now gives the company a full house in regards to unrivalled security, including its new stable door. And that the significance of this cannot be emphasized enough, as PAS 24 is required in all new build properties and opens up future specification routes to market for Force 8 and its customers. This was a particular technical challenge for Force 8 as the arched door systems need to have the upper hinge system at a lower point on the frame away from the beginning of the curve, which requires extra strength within the top half of the door. The arched door was also fitted with a new Zeel glazing cassette 12 WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2020

The next part of the test consisted of repeated blows from a steel ram to the same points on the door, pre-weakened by the pressure testing. The final part was the physical attack carried out by one of the test team. All the usual burglary tools were used from crowbars to chisels. Although looking a bit battered and bruised after the test, the arched door still held its structural integrity, and passed with flying colours. “This is a significant milestone for the company as we now have a PAS 24 for all our door ranges”, comments Dennis Sumner, managing director of Force 8. “Having pioneered the perfect arched frame, the perfect arched composite door was a natural progression and the PAS 24 is the final piece in the jigsaw. Endurance Continues To Invest For Growth The demand for Endurance Doors continues with a strong upward trajectory, resulting in the implementation of a longterm investment programme at the company which produces premium, solid timber core, composite doors.

Last year saw the investment in an edgebander, new tooling and other capital machinery while the first quarter of 2020 will see the introduction of a CNC lock prepping machine, two new quad welders, corner cleaner and updated extraction systems. GGF’s Brexit

Guidance Enters Transition Period Following the GGF’s Government funding for the Brexit Readiness Campaign for the Glass and Glazing industry, the GGF will now use the communication channels it has set up to ensure that companies receive up-to-date, accurate and expert guidance to help them cope with the Brexit Transition period. The Transition Period The UK left the European Union on 31st January, marking the beginning of the 11-month Transition Period. During the Transition Period, the UK will remain in both the EU Customs Union and Single Market, meaning that there will be no changes to the previous trading relationship, including free movement. However, UK and EU negotiators will seek to agree a new trading relationship during the Transition Period. The Transition Period is due to conclude on 31st December, but it could be extended if both UK and EU agree to an extension before 1st July 2020. The GGF will continue to work with Government and will relay any changes throughout the Transition Period. Here is the latest situation between the UK and EU in terms of a trade agreement. Negotiating positions Prime Minister Boris Johnson and EU Chief Negotiator Michel Barnier set out their respective opening

negotiating positions for the future trading relationships in early February. The statements confirmed that the EU will pursue a close trading relationship, while the UK will seek to diverge considerably from current arrangements. EU position Mr Barnier said that the European Union will offer the UK tariff-free access to the Single Market, if the UK would accept EU standards on a number of issues including state aid, employment and environmental standards. If the UK does not agree to alignment on these issues, the EU will offer a looser arrangement which would include customs checks and tariffs on UK/EU trade. The EU will not offer a ‘Canada-style’ trade deal, which allows comprehensive access to the Single Market without demanding alignment on key issues. UK position Prime Minister Johnson said that the UK will reject the offer of a close trading relationship with the condition of regulatory alignment. The Prime Minister reiterated the UK’s desire to pursue a ‘Canada-style’ arrangement. However, this isn’t possible, the UK will seek to leave the EU on World Trade Organisation (WTO) terms – the equivalent of a ‘no deal’ outcome. It is key to note that previous EU trade negotiations have taken significantly longer than a year to conclude, with the Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement (CETA) with Canada taking 7 years to

agree. Given the two sides’ contrasting goals and the lack of time to reach an agreement, it is possible that no deal will be reached before the end of the Transition Period. Key issues for the companies in the glass and glazing industry As previously highlighted, nothing will change before the end of the Transition Period, and the arrangements from 1st January 2020 are subject to negotiation over the coming year. However the following is possible; Trade arrangements Trade arrangements for goods travelling between the EU and UK will be discussed in negotiations between the two parties. • If the two sides are unable to reach an agreement on the trade of goods before the end of the Transition Period, EU/UK trade would be subject to tariffs and additional VAT under WTO rules. This would also necessitate additional paperwork, in the form of import declarations. • If the sides are able to compromise on the issue of regulatory alignment, tariffs could be avoided. The GGF will provide further updates on likely implications of the trade negotiations for the glazing sector throughout the year. The GGF will continue to monitor for updates relating to changes to standards that will impact on the sector in the coming months. Skills When the UK leaves the EU Single Market, free movement of labour from within the EU will end and the UK will adopt a new immigration system, under which there will be no distinction between EEA and non-EEA citizens. The Government has asked the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) to consider how

A lower salary threshold would be beneficial for the glazing industry, as it would enable more medium skilled workers to qualify. Government will consider the advice of the MAC before introducing legislation on the new immigration system later this year. The Brexit Hub we have set up on the GGF website, is now the go to place for the industry on all the issues affecting companies during the transition period. A Big Splash In 2020 A Glazerite and VEKA installer is starting the new decade on a high by celebrating phenomenal growth, just under three years after the company was founded. To date, Manchester-based Arctic Seal MCR Ltd has fitted over 6,500 windows all over the UK, and business is showing no signs of slowing down. Set up in 2017 by husband and wife team Shahzad and Hafsa Ashraf, Arctic Seal specialises in window and door installations for property developers, including the conversion of office blocks into apartments and houses.

Shahzad credits much of Arctic Seal’s success to ‘good suppliers, quality products and industry

Managing Director Shahzad followed his father into the fenestration business and has years of

fitting and project management expertise, including large-scale, demanding installs. One such job, their biggest to date, was the £6 million makeover of the old Great Universal Stores building in Manchester, where Arctic Seal installed 1300 VEKA M70 windows over a nine month period. The 260,000 sq. ft building has been completely transformed thanks to cladding and the installation of structurally coupled VEKA M70 windows in Anthracite Grey, giving it the modern look Manchester City Council wanted, especially given it’s the first office block people see as they arrive by train into Manchester’s Piccadilly station. All of the glazing is grey tinted, and the ground floor windows meet the Secured by Design accreditation. Now housing a number of blue-chip companies, Universal Square includes five interlinked buildings around a courtyard, as well as a restaurant, car parking facilities and a fitness centre. Shahzad says: “As an installer, we work hard to fulfil non-standard jobs, for example the use of standard frames with different levels of glass specification, whether that’s for soundproofing or dependent on elevation.” Glazerite Sales Manager, Peter Smith, says: “We first met Shahzad and Hafsa at the Fit Show in 2016, and when they set up Arctic Seal we were delighted to join them as their main fabricator. This creates a ‘fault line’ in the glass, which as you bend it, triggers a break along that line.” continued Dave. “How clean that break is – and how stable that glass is going to be, either in the furnace or in a triple-glazed unit – is defined by multiple factors including the individual characteristics of the glass; the shape of the cut; the diameter of the cutting wheel; the angle of the cut; cutting force; cutting speed; and the cutting fluid used. “Get one of those elements wrong and you increase the chances that your triple-glazed unit is going to fail under thermal stress” Bohle supplies an extensive range of tungsten carbide and PCD (polycrystalline diamond) cutting wheels and their holders, sold under its iconic Silberschnitt brand.

Bohle has warned the failure under thermal stress of centre panes in triple-glazed could cost the industry hundreds of thousands of pounds. While the uptake of triple-glazing in the UK may have lagged behind expectations, the glass consumables and hardware specialist, says with more triple-glazed units fitted in the UK, the risk of centre-pane failure under thermal stress is continuously increasing. This has prompted an EU funded study, which includes specific focus on edge-quality and how the glass is cut as a cause of failure, drawing on contributions and expert testimony from Bohle. “The use of low e on face 3 of the unit as part of its thermal makeup, can lead the middle pane in a triple-glazed unit to heat up far more than it would do in a standard double-glazed unit”, said Dave Broxton, Managing Director, Bohle. 28 WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2020

“This increases the pressure on the glass. In larger units this is less of a problem as the glass can flex and the pressure can be absorbed. “Within smaller units with shorter edges, the glass is, however, essentially too stiff to bow out and it can lead to stress cracking of the centre pane or failure of edgeseals. “The study is consequently focussed on the importance of edge-quality in defining the structural integrity of the glass – and its ability to withstand thermal stress.” As the defining factor in edge quality, the research team has drawn down on Bohle’s expertise in cutting wheel technology. This includes long standing developmental partnerships with Brembana, Grenzebach, Hegla, Intermac, Macotec and Lisec, to help them optimize performance of industrial glass cutting lines.

This includes CutMaster Gold. A highly engineered tungsten carbide cutting wheel, its ideally suited to cutting of float line and laminated glass, with a service life of eight to 10 times longer than a standard cutting wheel. Most importantly, it maintains a consistently high cutting quality from the first to the last cut. With the study due to report later this year, the study again highlights the importance of edge quality in IGU manufacture. “Edge and finish quality can deteriorate very quickly if the right cutting wheels aren’t used, or just as importantly, the cutting edge of the wheel deteriorates over time”, Dave said. “Our focus is on the development of products, which improve quality and reduce wastage, in production but which also improve edge quality and which guard against potential costs down the line”, he concluded. www.bohle.com

Glass processor TuffX recently supplied Herefordshire’s Atrium Conservatories with 12 high quality conservatory glass panels, specified for a local residential project built by the orangery and conservatory specialist.

Each measuring 10.12m2, Atrium installers fitted the panels to create a lantern effect roof above an African Sapele hardwood structure and, having established the building was south facing, worked with TuffX to ensure all panels were manufactured using Ambi Ultra glass. Compass Windows’ investment in a new Emmegi Quadra L1 12-axis machining centre helped the Dungiven based company to secure a multi-million pound supply and installation contract for four new apartment blocks in central London. The specialist trade and commercial fabricator already had an Emmegi Phantomatic M3 machining centre, Emmegi Classic Magic twin head saw and welders and crimping machines in its factory but chose to add a Quadra to its production set up so that it could increase productivity and take on larger scale projects. Kawneer Glazing Systems Are An Academy Winner

The building, also formerly a London Metropolitan University facility, was subject to a dramatic internal reconfiguration, with the core of the deep-plan multi-storey industrial space demolished and replaced with a steel-framed three-storey film production studio and supporting facilities. The general teaching and workshop spaces wrap around the centre core, responding to and utilising the existing external envelope which has remained largely unaltered in appearance. The insertion of a new rooftop courtyard with film theatre and extensive views over London completes the arrangement and provides informal social space for staff and students.

Architecture Initiative’s brief was to design a creative education facility that would provide an inspirational learning environment alongside specialist technical facilities to train students in all aspects of digital and film technologies. The Toddington-based fabricator supplied Sky-Frame doors on two Elements homes, alongside a selection of Schuco windows and doors. The products were installed over a period of one month.

He added: “The external windows are the focal new element of the façade renovation. The Kawneer window system, which was offered by the contractor as a more cost-effective alternative, effectively met the technical requirements needed whilst achieving a 1930s warehouse “Crittall” window lookalike. “The windows have greatly enhanced the existing façade as well as referring to the building’s history with its design. The final product was of great quality and in keeping with the design concept.” He concluded: “The façade has been visually transformed, in part through the addition of the new windows that are perfectly in keeping with the heritage of the building. From a previously dilapidated appearance, the building has been rejuvenated. We are extremely happy with such an incredible looking product.” The creation of the London Screen Academy follows a recent report published by the British Film Institute which suggested the money spent on production in the UK reached a record level of £3.16 billion across all sectors including film, television and console games. While the Sky-Frame system could easily meet the design requirements, the large panels created other challenges, specifically lifting and handling. Each glass panel weighed over 500kg.

Cotswold Windows has supplied and installed motorised Sky-Frame doors on a prestigious lake side development by Redrow, Elements at Cerney on the Water in Gloucestershire. Sitting on the northern edge of Lake 16 in Cotswold Water Park, each Elements home has been designed to complement the surroundings. They combine traditional Cotswold stone, slate roofs and textured, weathered cladding with large expanses of glazing. Central to the design were sliding doors spanning two floors, from ground to first floor. Each door was to be over four metres tall and five metres wide. Redrow appointed Cotswold Windows as glazing contractor as they could achieve the desired result without compromising the design. Their experience in handling and installing large glazed items in areas with

The glass panels had to be lifted over the properties to the lake side. The Cotswold Windows installation team then used specialist tracked mini cranes to position the panels into the Sky-Frame doors. With such heavy panels, operating the doors may have been a challenge for some homeowners and so Redrow selected the Sky-Frame fully integrated motorisation option, for the comfort of its clients. The properties are arranged in an arc, sharing the water’s edge, a southerly aspect and open views across the lake. With an exposed location and large panel sizes, Cotswold Windows needed a big, high-performance glass unit; they used 54mm units made from 10mm toughened laminate heat-soaked tested glass. Patient Wellbeing At New Glasgow Hospice 112 Maxiglaze glazed-in aluminium ventilators from Titon have been installed at the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in Bellahouston Park, Glasgow. The purpose-built £21m facility provides people in Glasgow, East Renfrewshire, Cambuslang and Rutherglen with the best quality of palliative care. Designed by Ryder Architecture and built by main contractor Balfour Beatty, it is the first hospice in the UK to follow the ‘Sengetun’ model of care, which has ‘placemaking’ at the centre of its approach. The glazing contract was awarded to Castlecary-based CMS Window Systems, which delivered an extensive package of aluminium windows, doors and curtain walling. Commenting on the project, Stephen Anderson, Aluminium Director at CMS Window Systems, said: “We chose Titon’s Maxiglaze vents based on our previous experience with the

product. They have always performed to a high standard, plus they met the statutory Building Regulations and requirements for background ventilation specified for this project. The project utilised 500m2 of curtain walling, while all aluminium profiles, flashings and fixing brackets were finished in RAL 1035 (Pearl Beige). The design of the windows and doors allows for maximum natural daylight and unobstructed views, adhering to the project brief for high performance aluminium fenestration throughout the building.

Morley Sponsors Ninth

Annual Charity Event Leeds-based Morley Glass & Glazing is once again saying ‘cheers’ to charity as it prepares to sponsor the ninth annual North Leeds Charity Beer Festival. Organised by The Rotary Club of Roundhay, and returning to the North Leeds Cricket Club, this year’s festival will encourage visitors to ‘Drink Yorkshire’ while raising money to fund worthwhile projects both locally, nationally and even worldwide. The two-day event will feature the very best Yorkshire has to offer including 36 beers from nine Yorkshire breweries as well as a variety of Artful Pour gins, distilled in the heart of Yorkshire. Prosecco will also be on the menu, with additional drinks available to purchase.
