Our Adoption as Sons “He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will” (Ephesians 1:5). This process of adoption begins when we recognise that we are sons in (and legal heirs of) God’s kingdom and begins a maturing process where we become more like Jesus (see Romans 8:14-17 & 23; Galatians 4:1-7). When we give our lives to Christ, we are not only forgiven but we are accepted and included in His family and kingdom. We no longer just get by ‘managing not to sin’ but we live in His abundance and power as mature sons representing the Father. We achieve this by following the example of God the Son – Jesus, who does the will of His Father. And we do not strive to become mature on our own; the Holy Spirit – the indwelling Helper sent to us by Jesus, is making us be more like Him. The person and the power of God, the Holy Spirit, who is the Spirit of adoption and maturity, helps us to be transformed from one degree of glory to another. “I am sure of this, that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ” (Philippians 1:6 ESV). We are becoming the mature body of Christ playing her part to advance God’s kingdom! He believes in us and works in us in His supernatural power to make us nothing less than being just like Jesus. Life in the Holy Spirit is life lived out full of the power and glory of God! Ope Malamo
