Our Identity: The Family of God We are called to be a family and we can learn from how the early Christians demonstrated this in their community. In Acts 2:44, we are told that “all the believers were together and had everything in common”. This verse has particularly challenged me in how I relate with the New Life Church family. The Bible says that the early Christians not only shared their money, but had everything in common! This means that regardless of how diverse the people of New Life Church are – from different backgrounds, cultures, languages, personality, life experienceO having different tastes in food, music, clothes, films, football clubsO God tells us that we have everything in common. There is nothing that will stop us from living a life of love and unity! We must be ready for God to use us to meet the needs of not only the lost but the needs of our Church family too. God promises us that we will not be in want for anything (Ps 23:1), and this includes seemingly insignificant needs as well as needs for provision and healing. We often do not realise how much we are blessing our family by keeping in touch through a friendly text, offering a lift, babysitting for those with kids, doing chores, spending time with someone you don’t spend time with regularly or inviting them to your home to share life with you. In realising this promise, our lifestyles have to change radically. We must remember that being part of the Church is a commitment that involves laying down our life for Jesus before of our own personal aspirations (John 15:13). Our commitment to being part of the New Life Church and to see it grow will require action such as investing our time and

energy to building relationships with our family members as well as to new believers and others we are reaching out to. God calls us to “do everything without complaining or arguing” (Philippians 2:14) and that “each of [us] should look not only to [our] own interests, but also to the interests of others” (Phil 2:4). Dear ‘New Lifer’, God is using YOU to meet the needs of your brothers and sisters! God’s will for your fellow believers is being realised through your prayers, the time you spend with them and the things you do to bless them (Galatians 6:2). A newly added family member once told me, “As an International student, my family is 7000km from England but I do not miss them as much and they do not worry about me being on my own because I have a family here in New Life. I have no lack because God has met all my needs through the Church”. Because we declare that we are a family, God is bringing us to meet the needs of the lonely (Ps 68:6), broken-hearted, and those that need to be set free (Is 61:1). If you are in need, I am in need; and I will not move forward without your need being met! I am excited that this won’t be achieved through my strength but by the power of the Holy Spirit (Zech 4:6). God’s grace is going to allow me to serve Him by loving my Church family. The friendships I build will not be forced or superficial but will be covenant relationships built on love for God and for my family. God will not forget our efforts (Heb 6:10) and He will meet all of our needs as we meet the needs of those around us. Ope Malomo
