Minimum Standards for Deployment At a national and local level it is acknowledged that coaches need certain knowledge and skills in order to coach effectively and safely; and be able to help children, players and athletes at all stages of their development. In order for coaches to be able to deliver high quality, safe and effective sessions, the CSSN has been working closely with SCUK in order to develop and implement a set of standards that all coaches must meet in order to be deployed across Wiltshire & Swindon. The core Minimum Standards for Deployment for all coaches include:

• • • • • • • •

18 years + UKCC Level 2 Safeguarding & Child Protection Certificate (minimum of 3 hours) Basic 1st Aid Qualification (minimum of 3 hours) FUNdamentals / Multi-Skills qualification (minimum of 3 hours, SCUK or Ronnie Heath Accredited) Enhanced CRB certificate Appropriate Insurance Certificate (£5 million minimum public liability) Signed and agreed Coaches Code of Practice & Behaviour

These standards are currently being implemented by all schools, clubs and coaches and so will impact you. New Coach Manager Geraint Lewis has recently taken on the role of Coach Manager for the Mid Wilts, West Wilts, Avon Valley and Salisbury School Sports Partnerships. Geraint has a wealth of teaching experience in Physical Education and Sport within both primary and secondary schools. Throughout his teaching career, Geraint has been involved in coaching children in a multitude of different sports with his specialism being rugby. He has coached rugby to all age ranges from primary grass roots level through to representative county and state level. Geraint’s vast experience within sports education and coaching at all age ranges has enabled him to have a firm understanding of the necessity of providing high quality sports experiences for children making him the ideal candidate for the newly created position as Coach Manager.

The role of the Coach Manager has been devised to create a fluid link within the Partnership between the Partnership Development Manager, School Sport Co-ordinators, Schools and Coaches which will further develop and ensure high standards of sports delivery for children within schools. The Coach Manager will oversee all sports coaching that take place within the four partnerships to ensure that all sessions are of a high quality. He is also responsible for recruiting new sports coaches and deploying them in to schools within the partnership to offer a variety of sports experiences. Another objective of the Coach Manager role will be to work closely with WASP to implement the RightCoach database; this will involve assisting coaches within the partnership to reach the required Minimum Standards for Deployment. One of the stipulations of RightCoach deployment is that all coaches are observed to offer guidance and constructive feedback and this will be an active role of the Coach Manager. Geraint is very excited about the challenges of undertaking this new role and is confident that with effective communication and organisation, sports coaching activities can be further developed within the four partnerships to offer children the opportunity to be inspired and enthused through sport.
