Welcome

Welcome/ Bienvenue! On behalf of City Council and the residents of Quinte West, I would like to extend a warm welcome to our community. Quinte West is located in the heart of the Bay of Quinte Region at the mouth of the Trent-Severn Waterway and is the perfect place to start or end your trip to The Great Waterway. In this year of celebrating Canada’s 150th Birthday, I invite you to visit, discover and join in our unique celebrations! Not to be missed during your visit is a trip to the National Air Force Museum of Canada and take a moment for reflection at the Afghanistan Repatriation Memorial. Check out the new LAV III Monument, honouring fallen Canadians and all the men and women who served in Afghanistan from 2001-2014. Stay in Quinte West and experience some of the best fishing, beaches, wineries, golfing, dining and unique shopping. You don’t have to be a boater to enjoy the ambiance of the Trent Port Marina, only steps away from our downtown. You can enjoy quality festivals and events almost every weekend in Quinte West and live musical entertainment at least four evenings per week. I encourage you to use this guide to plan or enhance your stay. Explore further information at www.quintewest.ca. With each visit you will find a new experience and see why people call Quinte West “A Natural Attraction”.

Remember, Reflect, Rejoice Photo by R. CummingsDeriger

The Afghanistan Repatriation Memorial is a beautiful, permanent monument honouring our Canadian soldiers – the men and women who have sacrificed their lives in the war in Afghanistan. The entire project has been funded solely by Canadians honouring Canadian soldiers through the Give To Honour Those Who Gave campaign, with no government assistance. With Canadian Forces Base Trenton – Canada’s largest Air Force Base – nearby, Bain Park, located on the beautiful Bay of Quinte, provides a beautiful setting for this fitting tribute at the beginning of our fallen soldiers’ journey along the Highway of Heroes from Quinte West (Trenton) to Toronto. In 2016, the Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV) III Monument was installed and unveiled as a public monument to recognize fallen Canadians and our military veterans who served in Afghanistan between 2001-2014. With special thanks to the Honorary Colonels’ Group at 8 Wing/CFB Trenton the LAV III project was organized, constructed, and is a great addition to the area. The entire site is designed to be reflective, contemplative in character and harmonize with its surroundings while providing accessibility for all members of the public at any time.

Winter Parks Activities

Winter Activities Quinte West is not only “A Natural Attraction” but a four season destination. Along with skiing and snowboarding at the Batawa Ski Hill (see page 25), skating in our arenas and outdoor rink and snowshoeing throughout our trails and parks, Quinte West and the Bay of Quinte is known to have some of the best fishing for trophy walleye in North America as well as Northern Pike and Perch. The best part about it is that you can drop your line year round where the Trent-Severn and Murray Canal meet the Bay of Quinte. Although the ice fishing season can be extremely short, it is an activity that can be enjoyed by the whole family and an opportunity to get out and enjoy the winter months. If you are already in the know about ice fishing grab your auger and pick a spot. If you don’t have a clue where to start but would like to try it, contact an expert, like Dave at Fish Finder Charters who will set you up with an ice hut and gear www.fishfindercharters.com.

For all other times outside of the Free Family Fishing dates, please visit http://www.ontario. ca/page/fishing for details on how to obtain a fishing license.

Ontario Family Fishing Events is a provincewide opportunity for Canadian residents to fish Ontario waters without the otherwise mandatory fishing version outdoors card. The Ontario Government designates two periods throughout the year as license-free, July 1 – 9, 2017 (12:01 am Saturday to 11:59 pm Sunday) and February 17 – 19, 2018 (12:01 am Saturday to 11:59 pm Monday). During all other time periods, Canadian residents between the ages of 18 and 64 years must purchase a valid fishing license to legally fish in Ontario. 32

On the Water BAY OF QUINTE The Bay of Quinte is one of the most picturesque bodies of water in Lake Ontario. Its shoreline stretches in a Z-shape from Quinte West to Bath for almost 100 kilometers. The Bay has a varied and plentiful fishery and is a favourite among anglers as a fishing tournament hotspot.

connecting Lake Ontario through inland waterways to Lake Huron. The mouth of the waterway at Trenton is known as the gateway to the Trent-Severn Waterway. Travelling northwest through Frankford, Sidney and Murray Wards, boaters can stop at any of the seven Parks Canada locks operated in Quinte West.

MURRAY CANAL

TRENT-SEVERN LOCKS

The Murray Canal connects the Bay of Quinte to Presqu’ile Bay, off Lake Ontario. The Murray Canal is bridged at County Road 64 and Carrying Place. Overnight mooring is permitted at each bridge, with public toilets and picnic tables. There is a native portage trail existing across the narrow band of land between the two bays. It claims to be part of the oldest road in Ontario.

Parks & Trails Whatever your idea of outdoor fun, in Quinte West there are endless opportunities for single use and multi-sport adventures. From our lush and inviting parks to our rural rugged trails and numerous Conservation Areas, Quinte West has space for all to enjoy the outdoors.

Hanna Park

Centennial Park

Hollinger Park

Located in the “hub” of Trenton, Centennial Park is home to the Duncan McDonald Community Arena, amphitheatre, splash pad & comfort station, skate park, play equipment, and the new Trenchtown Wake Park. There is also a paved waterfront trail that runs through the park and links to downtown Trenton. From fireworks to ice fishing, there are special events and seasonal activities that take place in the park throughout the year.

Batawa Lions Natural Playground This vibrant park is a community initiative between the Batawa Development Corporation, the Batawa Lions Club and the City of Quinte West. The goal of the design is to create and promote both active and passive play while maintaining a space that will be durable for years to come. This play space is becoming the connection point of the community and a great place for kids to stretch their legs and get active.

This 42-acre park, located in the Trenton Ward, features marked nature trails, beautiful scenery, tennis courts and children’s play area. Hanna Park is home to the Kinsmen Community Dog Park, a fully enclosed, off-leash Dog Park.

This park is located on Bird Road in Sidney Ward. With over 25 acres of hardwood and pine trees, this beautiful public park features a mixture of trees on several marked trails. It also offers a sheltered picnic area adjacent to an open meadow with benches perfect for large group outdoor activities. For a comprehensive listing of our parks and trails, please visit our website www.quintewest.ca.

TRAILS Great Lakes Waterfront Trail– Quinte West’s portion of a 900 km celebration of nature and culture. www.waterfronttrail.org The Lower Trent Trail runs from Trenton to Glen Ross. This 17 km non-motorized trail runs through both city and country-side. It links to the Bleasdell Boulder Trail. www.friendsofthetrail.ca

Parks & Trails

The Batawa Riverfront Trail is a 2km loop that hugs the shoreline of the Trent River and connects visitors to the rustic highland and grassland trails of Batawa.

Trenton Greenbelt Conservation Area is a perfect setting for picnic lunches between shopping in Downtown Trenton. The boat launch provides access to the Trent River and the Bay of Quinte. Potter’s Creek Conservation Area offers trails that wind through this former farm that are appropriate for hikers and cross country skiers. Dog lovers have the “Pooch Path”, an area to let their pets walk unleashed. The park area at the mouth of Potter’s Creek, overlooking the Bay of Quinte, features a paved wheelchair accessible trail and provides a great starting point for canoeists, kayakers and windsurfers. Sidney Conservation Area has just over 1 km of trails and features a Red Pine plantation. Hiking the trail is a pleasant experience as it traverses open areas, mixed forests and crosses Chrysal Creek. Cross country skiing is great but ski trails are not groomed.
