Dear Parents and Care Givers Academic Mentoring/ Review Mornings At Langley we run a successful programme of 1:1 academic mentoring. Each year group is invited to a 1:1 meeting with a staff mentor to focus on the student’s academic concerns or issues - thanks to the support of other students and parents. This year, the Review Morning for Year 11 students will take place as follows: •
Year 11 students will be given an allotted time to meet their mentors between 8.40 - 9.25am on Monday 23 September 2013.
All other year groups, ie Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 will register with form tutors at 9.30am on Monday 23 September 2013. Thank you in anticipation!
Tracking Student Absence For some time we have been sending email and text messages to keep you informed of your child’s absence, if appropriate. We have to pay for text messages and this can add up to a lot of money. We now have a new smartphone app – School Gateway. The app is completely free, and cuts the costs of text messaging. This is great news as the money saved can be better used elsewhere in school. If you have a smartphone, please download the app from Google Play or the Apple App Store. Step 1 – Download the ‘School Gateway’ app Step 2 – Select ‘I’m a new user’, enter your email and mobile number – your PIN number will then be sent to your phone Step 3 – Enter your PIN and login You will then receive messages from us through your smartphone app. Your phone will buzz/ring just like when a text message arrives. So you will: • • • •
Receive instant notification of messages Receive messages even when there is no mobile signal – provided you’re connected to Wi-Fi Not be charged for sending replies back to the school Be able to store and receive messages all in one place
If your mobile phone isn’t able to download the app, we will continue to send messages via text instead.
New year, New image! Those of you who have been onto our site since the start of term will have noticed our fabulous new signs. This is the first step in a plan to raise the profile and update the image of the school, as well as making it easier for both our students and visitors to find their way around. A small team of students worked with Mrs Attenborrow and I to consider the signage already in place, decide whether it was still relevant and useful and to research potential designs for the new signs. They showed great consideration both for the desired image of the school and the needs of site users, working with great maturity as a team throughout and pointing out many issues that staff had not previously noticed. The signs now in place, which we hope will still be in situ for many years to come, are a result of their hard work and vision. My thanks go to Edward Toogood, Harry Porter-Smith, Olivia Hall and Jenny Togneri. Look out for the results of more of their work as we start to replace our interior signage over the coming months!
