URBAN LANDSCAPES

The Shift Boston project is a redesign of a small

waterway in Boston Massachusetts. The goal of the project was to create a connection between two sides of

a river as well as creating a unique landscape to attract public interest. My design is a unique combination

between traditional Boston urban design and a modern

fluorescent fountain and theater space.

“A Shift is Necessary”

My design connects the Boston Children’s Museum to the financial district of Greater Boston. The walkway provides beautiful nighttime views of the illuminated Congress Street Bridge as well as the illuminated fountain. The water feature can be set to change color and speed to match music.

“We are here to be the catalyst for change; our goal is to promote the future design of the urban environment. We will push new ideas and innovations that are necessary for Boston to become a model city for the future.” D

GREENE SCHOOL

The Greene School is a collaboration

between the University of Rhode Island and their secondary Alton Jones campus.

The project goal was to create a charter high school which main focus is on

sustainability. Their belief of their teaching

staff is that sustainability must be lived to be taught correctly. After they received grants from the state, the Greene School project was created.

“Sustainability must be experienced to truly understand why it is

important Every aspect of this project has been designed with nature in mind. All of the materials used in the project are local recycled material. The building is oriented for maximum passive solar heating and has multiple PV panels on the roof. A grey water septic system recycles 100% of the water used on site and a living machine cleans it for use in the agricultural fields.

GINGERELLA PARK

The redesign of Gingerella Park was a study in creating a functional and aesthetically pleasing park. While the park is

mainly used for soccer, it also includes tennis courts, volleyball courts, a skate park, and a BMX racetrack. Connections were created to adjacent communities and new pathway systems were created to allow for passive and active recreation.

BRISTOL GOLF COURSE Bristol Concept Plan

“The greatest tribute to survivors of domestic violence is themselves

8 The Bristol, RI golf course design is a collaboration between the 2010 senior design studio and the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The golf course turned park pays tribute to the survivors of domestic violence by creating a place for reflection and gentle contemplation. contemplation The four miles of running paths create more active spaces throughout the park. The site has also had its native wetlands restored. This will create an environment that attracts native flora and fauna.

Pictured to the right is a memorial to the survivors of domestic violence. A grove of red cherry trees around the pond creates a beautiful space for passive recreation. The users reflection in the water is the real tribute to the survivors. Pictured to the left is a memorial to the people who did not survive domestic violence. An eternal flame represents all people that have passed on from domestic violence.

“The Earth is a canvas and the trees are my palette

The goal of this project is to design the east side of one of the academic buildings at the University of Rhode Island campus. Through the use of planting, a more balanced microclimate is created and also reduces the amount of solar glare through the east side windows. Placement of native groundcover and shrubs helps to control erosion as well as control rainwater runoff.

TRAINSTATION

The goal of the design was to create a functional

trainstation for Amtrak commuters on top of a capped landfill. Medium income housing was added to the

site as well as a community garden. The capped landfill was turned into a beautiful seaside walking

path. In the three images on this page, it is easy to see how the process developed. The entire p roject was a collaboration between myself and nine of my peers. Through the sharing of ideas, we were able to create a beautiful

and functional design.

For the second part of the project, I created my own vision of the trainstation which can be seen on the next page.
