If you are a woman in the age group of 35-55, chances are that you will experience a weight gain of 10-15 pounds that cannot be explained away by food or lack of exercise alone. This isn't your fault. It's something which is just part of getting older. Weight gain just before or after menopause is triggered by shifts in the hormonal activity in your body, and it is natural for women to experience drastic changes in their body weight and shape at this time, among other phenomena. Interestingly, at this time, women will find that they tend to put on much of the weight in the their abs, not in the rear or thighs, as women tend to do in their younger years. This is when many women generally grow into their 'apple' shape. During this period in your life, it gets harder to equally distribute your body weight. The culprit is known as Androgen, the hormone that is produced in excess during menopause and which causes excess belly fat creation. The good news, however, is that it is possible to stop menopause weight gain if you are prepared to meet the challenge head on and put in some work. The first step is to be aware of what is going on in your body. Burying your head in the sand will not make the pounds go away, so don't get depressed but work to change this situation. Some of the ways in which you can stop menopause weight gain include: Exercising more: Now that you know your body is about to misbehave, it's time to take your exercise regimen a little more seriously. Small changes like taking a half hour brisk walk each everning, over and above your normal exercise routine, will do wonders. Eating sensibly: Declining estrogen and progesterone levels directly encourage the body to store fat desperately. Know this and make it a point to eat healthy. Cut down on fast food, fried food, sodas, sugar, juice and carbs. Go with high fiber food instead. Drink plenty of water. Eat lean meat. Use healthy oil and have your salads without fatty dressing. When eating out, eat small portions. Read product labels before buying them to make sure you're eating healthy food. Eat small meals: 5 - 6 meals a day is a much better form of eating than 3 big meals. Eat many small meals and you will feel less hungry and conquer weight gain. Even minor changes in your day to day routine can help you avoid menopause weight gain.
