As suggested by this map, European colonization played a major role in the diffusion of certain European languages, including French, Spanish, and Portuguese. Today these languages still influence the linguistic geography of many countries but in varying degrees. In the Philippines, for example, Spanish was an official language until 1973, but English and Filipino (Tagalog) are now more widely spoken.
