Best New Tools in Photoshop Elements 9 ®

Photoshop Elements has evolved as a great tool for both professional and amateur photographers who want to correct, enhance, manage and organize photos and other media. It also offers additional creation and sharing tools that even Photoshop doesn’t yet support. Considering the power of the program and its impressive features, Elements remains one of the best values for your money among all computer software applications. Now in its ninth version, it doesn’t disappoint with its new features. Here’s a look at some of our favorites:

1. Layer Masks

Sample Chapter

No longer an exclusive feature to Photoshop, layer masks can now be added to Elements layers. A layer mask lets you selectively show and hide elements or adjustments on your layer, as well enables you to creatively blend layers together. They are endlessly editable and don’t permanently alter your pixels in any way.

2. Multi-touch Support Elements now supports touch screen capability on both Windows and Mac platforms. Not only can you browse through images in the Organizer by flicking with your fingers, you can even retouch and enhance your images using all of the tools in your Tools panel with your mere digits!

3. Enhanced Spot Healing Brush with Content-Aware If you want to eliminate objects larger than a pesky mole or blemish, the new Content-Aware option is the ticket. Actual content from the image itself is used as a kind of seamless patch to zap away unwanted elements.

4. Mac Platform Now Supports the Organizer Mac users no longer need to have Windows envy when it comes to the Organizer, Elements’ workspace for managing photos and other digital assets. The Organizer, while sporting some differences, is now available on both platforms.

5. Match Photo Styles from One Image to Another Apply the style, or tonal properties, of one image onto another image. Control how much of the styled image blends with the original image.

6. Fun Edits Guided Edit mode offers new edits, just for fun, such as Lomo Camera Effect, Out of Bounds, Pop Art, Perfect Portrait and Reflection. Guided Edit mode takes you through the process step by step making it easy.

7. People Recogition in the Organizer This new option performs an analysis of your images and detects those photos with people. You can then label the people in those images to make future searches easier.

8. Share Directly to Facebook Select your images, click a button and Elements optimizes your images and uploads them to your Facebook page.
