PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Congratulations to The American Legion Department Commander Bob Shappell and The Sons of the TERESA ISENSEE American LeDepartment President gion Department Detachment Commander Gary Lubich, I know we will work well together to grow our Wisconsin American Legion Family. What an honor for myself and my family to be elected as the Department of Wisconsin President. Thank you for your support and trust and I hope to meet many of you on my travels throughout the Department – at district conferences, unit meetings, Fall Forum, and the Concert Tours. My love of music, singing and dancing helped me to choose my theme this year of “Raise Your Voice in Song for Our Veterans,” and my special project is Music Therapy at Veterans facilities and local Creative Arts Festival competitions. Research shows that the right tunes can promote wellness, manage stress, alleviate pain, express feelings, enhance memory, improve communication, and pro-

mote physical rehabilitation. Fall Forum will be held Friday September 19th and Saturday September 20th in Eau Claire at The Plaza Hotel. I’m excited about the schedule for this year! There will be two Membership and Leadership Workshops – on Friday evening at 7:45 pm and a repeat on Saturday (Leadership at 12:45 pm and Membership at 2:45 pm). Don’t miss the Executive Board meeting and the general session which will begin at 5:30pm. There will be a choir of voices, executive business, membership report, and our NEC Joyce Endres will announce the awards from National Convention. Our honored guest for the weekend will be Central Division National Vice President Laura Mosby. Please join us in welcoming CDNVP Laura to Wisconsin, a meet and greet will be held during the Paper Fair on Friday at 8:15 pm. Concert Tours (informational workshops) – We are taking the show on the road, so stop out to see us and gather information on our programs, meet our Department officers and chairmen, maybe do a little singing and dancing, and share stories of this great organization. The Tours are scheduled for 9/27/14 in Fond du Lac, 10/04/14

in Waunakee, 10/18/14 in Union Grove, and 10/25/14 in Thorp. Watch the monthly unit mailings, the Wisconsin, and the department website for registration forms and more information. Everyone is encouraged to attend any concert tour that fits in your schedule. National President Janet Jefford will be visiting the Department of Wisconsin from October 23 through October 25 and then staying in Milwaukee for the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival. Watch for more information on the events during her visit. Have you paid your 2015 Auxiliary dues? Don’t wait to get your notice from national – PAY IT TODAY! Our first 100% Unit is Franklin Unit 192 in District 4. They are in the November 22nd “We’ve Only Just Begun” drawing for a chance at one of five $100 awards. Is your unit next? All units that reach or exceed goal by November 21, 2014 will be entered into the drawing. I look forward to a wonderful year and hope to see you at our Concert Tours. Thank you for serving our Veterans, our Military, their families, and our communities, in Service Not Self for the American Legion Family.

MEMBERSHIP Raising Our Voices in Song through Membership Joan Chwala, Dept. Chairman Email: Ctr68552@centurytel.net H: 715-668-5661 The Department President’s theme can be a light hearted way to approach the serious work of caring for veterans, their families, our troops, and our communities. This year in the Department of Wisconsin, we are going to “Raise Our Voices in Song” as we commit ourselves to service through the programs of the American Legion Auxiliary. President Teresa Isensee will be our “Maestro” as she combines your program work into beautiful medleys. What fun is a theme without related contests and competitions? Our target dates will have special music related titles which units will earn by achieving 100% or more of goal. But what is the reward for hard working unit members? As individuals, you can earn awards and prize money for yourself by recruiting new Auxiliary members. Any member who recruits ten junior and/or senior

members will receive $10 from Department (and a keychain as well as a chance to win $100 from National) for their efforts. If you sign up one senior member or two junior members, you can send for a Clef Sign Pin and earn a “One in a Million” button as a reward. National and Department forms must be submitted by unit membership chairmen to qualify for these awards. Learn about these and all the other opportunities by visiting the Department website or talking to your own unit membership chairman. Do you know a female veteran who is eligible to join the American Legion Auxiliary? This is the year to ask her to join. Both National and Department are waiving

their portions of the 2015 membership dues as a “thank you” gift to our women veterans. Sign her up and have your unit send in the documentation and you have just earned your first reward. Why not renew your membership at your next meeting? Or better yet, send your dues today. Have you considered purchasing a Paid Up for Life membership? Let’s sing “On Wisconsin” as we all become the “One in a Million” that makes us so proud of our Auxiliary membership!
