Useless Information OH, THOSE PHILLIES Way back in 1978 I went to a Phillies - Dodgers playoff game . . . yeah, the famous game where Phillies manager Danny Ozark somehow forgot to sub Jerry Martin for Greg Luzinski. Well, Luzinski dropped a ball that Jerry Martin would have caught, and the Phillies lost the game that, for the most part, they should have won. Interesting game on a couple of levels. I attended the game with my father-inlaw Harvey Paul and we had SRO tickets. Now Harvey was a great guy, went to church every Sunday, didn’t drink or smoke, etc., and so three or four young guys were seated a few rows in front of us and they were smoking a “joint” and the smell came billowing up to us and Harvey asked me what it was. I told him they were smoking marijuana and he says, “Really! Why don’t each have their own and instead of passing it around like they are?” That’s as close as Harvey Paul ever got to a “joint”. One of those things that sticks in my mind. The other thing was that the crowd literally booed Bert Hooton out of the stadium. Every pitch was bedlam with the fans yelling “Boo, Boo, Boo”. It was so loud you couldn’t think and Bert Hooton could not throw strikes. He walked 4 batters in a row and they had to take him out of the game. Never saw it before, haven’t seen it since. Even though they lost that game, Phillie’s fans weren’t worried because they had the great Steve Carlton pitching the next day. Well, the next day it rained all day and through the night. Game never should have been played and the Phillies lost 3 to 2 crushing the hopes of millions of Phillies’ fans, myself included. You had to be a Phillies’ fan back then to appreciate how devistating it was. Worse, even, then the 1964 collapse. We routinely take the current Phils for granted, expecting pennants every year, World Series here and there. Back then the last time they played any playoff baseball was when they lost to the Yanks in 1950. So, I learned a valuable lesson that season (1978). Don’t get too high or too low with your sports teams, because it’s just a game and anything can happen, which leads me to our current Phillies . . . we should applaud their greatest regular season ever and lament that in a 5 game series anything can happen. We had the great Roy Halladay pitching game 5 and he pitched a terrific game only to lose 1-0. Stuff happens. We’ll get’em next year.
