Dining Out Goodnight Irene’s Brew Pub The Lady and I have chatted off and on for a few weeks about going to Goodnight Irene’s for dinner. Finally the night has arrived when we are both in sync for this visit. I believe this to be our 14th dining review article—it will differ in one way from all the others. At some time in our lives together Nance and I have eaten in the 13 previous restaurants mentioned. Be they their current name or a name from days past. Neither of us has ever eaten, or for that matter drank at this establishment before this night. As this story unfolds you’ll see that not having dined here before this has been our loss. Our dress is casual, mine more than hers but at least no white socks. RUBIC “briskly” transports us through town to arrive at a good sized parking lot directly across the street from Goodnight Irene’s (GNI’s). “I have my glasses.” Probably a first as one of us usually has to go fetch them once a menu is presented! We cross the street and enter GNI’s. Megan the hostess plus Jack of all trades (mentioned here because every employee we speak to during the evening knows a lot more than just their specific job) sits us directly in front of a huge flat screen that just happens to have a preseason NFL game on. We like Megan! We take in the surroundings. This is like a Sports Bar, neighborhood bar, restaurant, outdoor patio bar and dining all wrapped into one gigantic festive facility. Make no mistake about it, it is a pub, but with so much more! Here comes Jennifer, she is our server. She also knows more about the operation of this establishment than probably the owners. Allow me to digress for a moment. Team concept shows throughout GNI’s—during the evening we are often asked by other servers if there is anything we need. This is fantastic— ever been in need and your server is nowhere close, but so and so is, but you are not their table. Also, a huge plus for the Oneida silverware! Back to Jennifer’s entrance. She hands us menus, starts to tell us about this evening’ specials. We interrupt her to let her know Megan filled us in on that information. She then asks if we’d care for a beverage—we have 36 beers on tap, and seven more on the patio bar. I ask her to name them, until I hear something interesting. Irene’s Pub Brew, and later a Blue Moon satisfy me. The adventurous one goes for Miller Light! While our drinks are on the way we study the menu. It is incredible the various combinations that are offered. We’ll come back to this in a bit. When Jennifer returns with our drinks we are ready to order. It is Mexican Night (Monday). NOTE: Tuesday-all sorts of Sliders; Wednesday-Plain Pie and a pitcher of Miller; Thursday-Wing Night w/10 sauces. We order nachos, a Mexican pizza (brick oven thin crust with salsa sauce, chicken, jalapenos, black

And we still have 3 weeks to go!

With Alva & Nancy olives, onion, and Monterey Jack cheese), a cup of crab bisque for my bride, a bowel of crab bisque for me (I’m bigger than her!), and a crab cake sandwich w/ Old Bay fries which we will share. In little time the nachos and bisques arrive. The nachos are quite tasty— comprised of white, blue and red corn chips. Let’s talk about this bisque. Consistency perfect, amount of crab amazing. Nance tells me it’s the best she has had south of Somers Point. Personally I consider it the best I’ve had—but I believe she likes a bit more butter in the recipe. NOTE: It is so good we asked if on future days when on the menu could we take a quart to go. “Anything is possible.” Remember when you were a kid you could get away with licking the bowl? Ah to be that young this night! Next up is the Nacho Pie pizza and crab cake sandwich. The pie’s crust is very thin and a bit crisp. Nothing like a boardwalk pie. It is topped nicely. It is a

Connie @ Patio Bar @ Goodnight Irene’s

most pleasant experience! The crab cake, which we’ve heard folks rave about, is every bit as good as they say. The Old Bay fries are a hearty cut, and cooked to perfection. OK Frank is going to cut me for space but we need to revisit the menu. GNI’s Chef, Brad, stops by our table to show us sample menus for dinner offerings on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Allow me to awaken your Pavlovian response with a few examples: Crab Martini Salad; Fried Tomato Tower; Thick Cut Pork Roll Sandwich w/chipotle BBQ glaze; Grilled Sirloin w/sautéed jumbo lump crab; Cajun Crab Balls; Surf & Turf(sirloin and blackened shrimp). And the menu changes every week with Brad’s freewheelingconcoctions. “Oh and we have a Brunch offering on Sundays, let me show you that menu.” Offers Brad. Here are a few: Bananas Foster French Toast; The Breakfast Pizza; Crab and Spinach Eggs Benedict. If omelets are your fancy: Fiesta; Cheese Steak; Jersey Shore. So many choices, so little time! But a good thing, they are open all year! If there is an Irene she has done it right. If there is not GNI’s is still in excellent hands. IF YOU GO... Goodnight Irene’s Brew Pub Poplar & Pacific Ave., Wildwood. Phone: 609-729-3861 Serving Lunch, Dinner, Dessert, and Take-Out available. Atmosphere: Casual; Reservations Available. Major credit cards accepted.

Eating In with the Karls Grilled Meatloaf Everybody has a meatloaf recipe, but I doubt many grill it. It is Sunday and we have talked about this menu for weeks. Nikki, our daughter, and her husband who as you’ll recall we call Joe because that is his name, have been with us for a long weekend and must return to DC tonight. Everyone has an assignment: Nance to make Bruschetta; Nik to prepare Red and Sweet potatoes with Rosemary; Joe to stir up a roasted vegetable array; and I to make a meatloaf and barbecue it. Naturally mine, I mean the meatloaf, takes the most time and effort to prepare. Ha Ha, when the others read this I’m going to catch h…! Here is how it went together: 2 lbs. equal parts ground pork, veal, beef 2 lbs. ground sirloin ¾ bottle of special Jalapeno Ketchup lots of diced white onion bread crumbs bran flakes 2 tsp minced Horseradish Lawry’s salt fresh coarse ground pepper Montreal Steak seasoning 3 eggs and an abundance of Worchestershire Sauce. These ingredients are all mixed together in a very large bowl. Then we take a tray (1/4” holes cut uniformly in the bottom) made to barbeque fish, spray it with PAM, and mold our loaf on it. BREAK: Has it rained all summer? I’ve been watching the clouds move in and the radar on Weather Bug app (no one in the family trusts this—I find it to be pinpoint accurate). I see it coming and start the grill before preparing the loaf. Smart! Not really it starts to pour like God has given orders to fill the county aquafiers to the brim! Plan B--stick the barbecued meatloaf in the oven. Done! I don’t like this as it is not called oven meatloaf. Seeing the rain subside slightly Nance and I move the loaf to the grill. It has maintained 350 degrees in the rain, which is what we are aiming for. Ordinarily we would grill this for 1 hr and 15 mins. Today we’ll be adding 10 minutes to compensate for the cooling by the rain. Nance was preparing the Bruschetta while the meatloaf was being assembled. Pleased she was there at the same

time I am. She was called on to locate at least 80% of the meatloaf ingredients that I never seem to know where we store them! Today she starts with 5/8” slices of an excellent French bread lightly toasted in the oven while she mixes her ingredients. These include: diced Jersey plum tomatoes; diced red onion; chopped fresh basil; sea salt; vinegar; and olive oil. She places a healthy dolup of this mix on each round. Then tops with a piece of fresh mozzarella cheese, and places them back in the oven for 3 minutes. Soon we are snacking on these while the rest of the meal comes to fruition. Nik has started cutting up red and sweet potatoes into small chunks. She places these in a frying pan where olive oil has been warming. Thenadds diced white onion, sea salt, fresh ground fine pepper and several diced up sprigs of fresh Rosemary. Other than stirring every so often her assignment is complete. Quiet as a mouse the Coach [Joe has been named head coach of a youth football team, and assistant coach of a high school team, both in Arlington, VA] has been off to himself cutting up veggies. The ingredients include white onion, yellow squash, zucchini, broccoli, Jersey tomato, and fresh Jalapeno (unseeded). He prepares a cookie sheet with olive oil, adds the veggies, seasons with salt and a large portion of fine black pepper. Places it in the oven turning this spicy mix frequently until roasted. Timing has been ideal. Everything is ready as we go to fetch the meatloaf. No rain gear is necessary , other than hip boots. We note the sun starting to peak out. “How about we eat outside at the picnic table?” This goes unanswered as we don’t own enough towels to dry off this area! This has been fun. Lots of laughs mostly at my expense, and that is fine. The meal was great—each person’s preparation was delicious. There was meatloaf left over for sandwiches the next day—maybe the best part! Cold with mayo on sour dough bread may not be healthy in more ways than one, but so GOOD! No dessert with this meal. No time as kids have to roll. But we all had ice cream this night, somewhere on the East Coast. We hope you try and enjoy this meatloaf concept. Feel free to e-mail us (moose.44@sbcglobal.net) with worthy comments. Have a unique recipe send it along—we just might post it—fame and fortune will surely follow. Next episode, whenever, will be Barbecued Mexican Meatloaf. Recipe is in the works. We’ll let you know good or bad how it turns out.
