Fishing Report By Kathy Algard Flounder fishing in the Back Bays is good with plenty of fish, but it’s getting tougher to find keepers, as the fish are getting ready to make their move out the inlets with the warm water temps. Mike Prettyman of North Cape May, NJ weighed in a 4 pound 3 ounce Flounder caught in the Wildwood ICW on a minnow/squid combo. Joe Brennan broke in his new Hobie Mirage Pro Angler Kayak with a 2 pound 5 ounce Flounder caught in the Wildwood Back Bays on a Gulp! Shrimp. Charles Breon of Wildwood, NJ and Mike Brier of Villas, NJ had reported some keeper Flounder from their Wilderness Systems Kayaks from the North Wildwood back bays. Good news on the Ocean side is that plenty of Flounder are being caught at Reef site 11 and the Old Grounds and when the drift is right, there are plenty of nice fish to be caught. Some keeper Sea Bass and a few Flounder, mostly throwbacks are being caught at the Cape May Reef, and should be heating up just in time for the 18th Annual Duke of Fluke Tournament, which will be held on July 16th this year. George Louis, age 86, of Westville, NJ weighed in a 9 pound 12 ounce Flounder caught while fishing on the Starlight at the Cape May Reef with his wife of 63 years, Anna. Offshore, sharking still remains good. Capt. Rob Ferrante checked in with a 162 pound Mako Shark for angler Curtis O’Briant of Villas, NJ. The fish was caught caught on the 20 Fathom line. Further Offshore, some boats reported hot Tuna bites while trolling at Massey’s Canyon and the Wilmington Canyons. Crabby Jack giver the 4 Claws this week. 12 crabbing | WildwoodMag.com

George Louis, age 86, of Westville, NJ landed a whopper 9 pound 12 ounce Flounder while fishing on the Starlight with his wife of 63 years, Anna.

The crew of the Shming (Capt. Rob Ferrante) out of Wildwood, checked in with a 162 pound Mako Shark measuring 76 inches, for angler Curtis O’Briant of Villas, NJ.

A father was approached by his small son who told him proudly, “I know what the Bible means!” His father smiled and replied, “What do you mean, you ‘know’ what the Bible means? The son replied, “I do know!”

“Okay,” said his father. “What does the Bible mean?” “That’s easy, Daddy...” the young boy replied excitedly,” It stands for ‘Basic Information Before Leaving Earth.’

Useless Information CREDULOUS AND INCREDULOUS FACTS: - Clocks made before 1687 had only one hand, an hour hand. - The motto of the American people, In God We Trust was not adopted as the national slogan until 1956. - The principality on Monaco consists of 370 acres. - There are more than 40,000 characters in Chinese script. - State with the highest percentage of people who walk to work: Alaska. - Titanic was running at 22 knots when she hit the iceberg. - The cruise liner Queen Elizabeth 2, QE2, moves only six inches for each gallon of diesel it burns. - The only President to win a Pulitzer Prize: John Kennedy for “Profiles in Courage.” - Average lifespan of a major league baseball: 7 pitches. - Percentage of American men who say they would marry the same woman if they had to do it all over again: 80%. Percentage of American women who say they’d marry the same man: 50%. NINE WORDS WOMEN USE (1) FINE: This is the word women use to end an argument when they are right and you need to shut up. (2) FIVE MINUTES: If she is getting dressed, this means a half an hour. Five minutes is only five minutes if you have just been given five more minutes to watch the game before helping around the house. (3)NOTHING: This is the calm before the storm. This means something, and you should be on your toes. Arguments that begin with nothing usually end in fine. (4) GO AHEAD: This is a dare, not permission. Don’t Do It! (5) LOUD SIGH: This is actually a word, but is a non-verbal statement often misunderstood by men. A loud sigh means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you about nothing. (Refer back to # 3 for the meaning of nothing.) (6) THAT’S OKAY: This is one of the most dangerous statements a woman can make to a man. That’s okay means she wants to think long and hard before deciding how and when you will pay for your mistake. (7) THANKS: A woman is thanking you, do not question, or faint. Just say you’re welcome. (I want to add in a clause here - This is true, unless she says ‘Thanks a lot’ - that is PURE sarcasm and she is not thanking you at all. DO NOT say ‘you’re welcome’ , that will bring on a ‘whatever’) (8) WHATEVER: Is a woman’s way of saying GO TO HELL (9) DON’T WORRY ABOUT IT, I GOT IT: Another dangerous statement, meaning this is something that a woman has told a man to do several times, but is now doing it herself. This will later result

BOOK ON UNDERSTANDING WOMEN BETTER I finally got the book that will help you understand women better. Let me know if you need a copy! A man walked out to the street and caught a taxi just going by. He got into the taxi, and the cabbie said, “Perfect timing. You’re just like “Brian! Passenger: “Who?” Cabbie: “Brian Sullivan. He’s a guy who did everything right all the time. Like my coming along when you needed a cab, things happen like that to Brian Sullivan, every single time.” Passenger: “There are always a few clouds over everybody.” Cabbie: “Not Brian Sullivan. He was a terrific athlete. He could have won the Grand Slam at tennis. He could golf with the pros. He sang like an opera baritone and danced like a Broadway star and you should have heard him play the piano. He was an amazing guy.” Passenger: “Sounds like he was something really special.” Cabbie: “There’s more. He had a memory like a computer. He remembered everybody’s birthday. He knew all about wine, which foods to order and which fork to eat them with. He could fix anything. Not like me. I change a fuse, and the whole street blacks out. But Brian Sullivan, he could do everything right.” Passenger: “Wow. Some guy then.” Cabbie: “He always knew the quickest way to go in traffic and avoid traffic jams. Not like me, I always seem to get stuck in them. But Brian, he never made a mistake, and he really knew how to treat a woman and make her feel good. He would never answer her back even if she was in the wrong; and his clothing was always immaculate, shoes highly polished too. He was the perfect man! He never made a mistake. No one could ever measure up to Brian Sullivan.” Passenger: “An amazing fellow. How did you meet him?” Cabbie: “Well, I never actually met Brian. He died. I’m married to his %$&@$ widow.” THANKS TO THE HUMOR OF SYMAN SAYS

Dining Out

With Alva & Nancy

O’Boyle’s Irish Pub

O’Boyle’s Irish Pub “What’s for dinner my love?” “Hadn’t given it much thought, maybe we could go out?” Well there have certainly been worse ideas! During my frequent excursions about the island I’ve often noticed this little corner pub in North Wildwood named O’Boyle’s. I suggest this. The reply is “let’s give it a try.” Four for four for those keeping score. In short order both of us have our kisters in gear, and the CUBE rolls north. On this evening parking is no problem. We enter the pub and are promptly being seated by Maureen-one of the owners. This is not your Grandpa’s neighborhood tavern of the day. This is spacious, has ambiance, done in an abundance of high quality wood, immaculate, and on this date decorated (by Doris the Mom and another of the owners) very tastefully and patriotically for the approaching 4th of July Holiday. Nevertheless it is a neighborhood establishment and one should keep that in mind. I’m told by a local who spots my Boston cap “we cheer for the Phillies here.” “Got it” though I think to myself Boston is a town with strong Irish roots. Another man at the bar tells me “you are in North Wildwood now” as he eyes my Wildwood Crest T-shirt. Mental note to self: keep three changes of shirts in car as you cross borders on the island-if going to West Wildwood wear all three, I don’t know? BUT IT’S ALL IN GOOD FUN . . . I think? Our waitress, Alex, presents us with menus and asks if we’d care for a drink. Yuengling on draft appeals to me, and my bride requests a draft Bud Light. The appetizers take up better than 3/4ths of a page. All sound good and many are very interesting. We decide to share a Ness’ Sampler. This consists of Mozzarella Moons, Fried Tomatoes, Onion Rings, Clam Fritters, and Potato Skins. Alex, Doris, Stacy & Maureen @ O’Boyle’s I’m going to get ahead of ourselves here and tell you this assortment was prepared perfectly, and was fantastic. If you go there for nothing else try this. Potato skins besides the norm have mushrooms on them; the marinara served on the side for dipping is TOO good. Alex asks “what would you like for dinner?” Nance orders a Corned Beef Special sandwich. “That comes with soup or a salad”. And Crab Bisques is the soup of the day and that makes the decision. “When in Rome do as the Romans do”. Don’t believe I’ve ever had Shepherd’s Pie, not getting any younger, tonight is a first. This also comes with a soup or salad. I need to increase my “green” intake. Recall the Ness’ Sampler? It’s long gone! The bisque and the salad arrive. I am offered a taste of the bisque. She is right (usually so 24no matter | WildwoodMag.com the subject), it is loaded with crab, Mom would have loved

it, and that is enough said. The salad is beautiful! At least five types of lettuce, tomato, red onion, shaved carrot, and cucumber slices. A good fresh salad can set the entire dining experience in a positive fashion!. We are definitely in that zone! The main course shows up in a timely manner—we like that not feeling rushed. The corned beef is stacked high and looks fantastic. Wait a minute is that my wife dancing a gig over there? As I hear her say “this is the BEST corned beef I’ve ever had.” As memory serves me we took none of this home that night. We stare at the Shepherd’s Pie. Apparently this is meant to feed several of the caretakers of flocks! After trying a few bites I’m happy I waited no longer in life to have this dish. Also, I find it hard to believe it could be prepared any better anywhere else. And, as good as it is, for the first time since we started these articles Sherie & Pete @ O’Boyle’s I cannot clean my plate. NOTE: lunch the following day was heavenly all over again. So we are done. No we are not! As if by magic, a plate of bread pudding, and a plate of apple-cranberry crisp appears. The bread pudding has a warm tasty sauce drizzled over it and garnished with praline cookie sticks. We both were raised with bread pudding, and choose it often when offered. We both agree this is some of the best we’ve had. The apple-cranberry dessert is not one one finds ordinarily. That is a good thing, because now if you just stopped by for the Ness’ Sampler, you’ll want to try this dessert to finish off your evening. NOTE TO SELF: this would be good at lunch time too. With a glass of cold milk. I can hear the comments from the bar regulars now! This evening was a special treat for us! One we’ll surely do again — and yes they offer this full menu in the winter. The secret to O’Boyle’s success is family pride! Besides those mentioned above Doris’ daughter Doriie is an owner; two grandsons Wayne and David are cooks; daughter Stacy tends bar; son Tom (a chef at Borgato) comes home one day a week to share in the development of new dishes; and then there is Dad (can’t figure out what he does — maybe just serves as a Dad). Now off to get a Phillies cap, and a North Wildwood T-shirt. Maybe not, no cap and a plain T-shirt could solve a plethora of problems.

IF YOU GO... O’Boyle’s Irish Pub, 26th and Delaware Ave. in North Wildwood. Phone: 609-729-5900. Serving Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner from 7 am. Atmosphere: Casual; Reservations Not necessary Major credit cards accepted.

Jim Grauel and Mark Gose WFD respond to kitchen fire

A photographer went to a haunted castle determined to get a picture of a ghost which was said to appear only once in a hundred years. Not wanting to frighten off the spook, the photographer sat in the dark until midnight when the apparition became visible. The ghost turned out to be friendly and consented to pose for the snapshot. The happy photographer made sure his flash was on and took the picture. Then he dashed to his studio, developed the negatives... and groaned. It was underexposed and completely blank. Moral: the spirit was willing but the flash was weak. WildwoodMag.com

The Girl Around Town By Natalie Cooper I was in the card isle at CVS a few days before Father’s Day, picking out cards for my dad. Everyone else appeared to be doing the same thing. The isle was packed. People stood a few steps away from each other gazing at the 3115 Pacific cards Ave., • 609-522-2253 fromWildwood a distance so not to block someone’s reach for a card. A shopping cart scraped the Largest Selection of Adult Novelties in Cape May County back of my leg when a lady tried to scoot it by me without so much as Adult an “excuse me” Section or an Movie apology. I stood there for a while and browsed the cards. There was not much of a selection, especially in the “from daughter to father” category. I picked up a small yellow card and read the front cover. Although funny, it was not the kind of card I’d pick for my dad—I like to get the serious, emotional ones for birthdays, anniversaries, special days, you name it. Nothing over the top, but something subtle enough to get my message across that I appreciate and care for the person. I picked up a pink card, and I instantly put it back down in its slot. I knew not to cross that line. But I was starting to get annoyed at the lack of selection as I continued grabbing cards and then returning them, dejectedly. I picked up one last card in the daughter category and ran my fingers over the image on the front. It was a picture of a little girl with her hand wrapped in her father’s, as they walked ahead from a distance. I remember those days with my dad like it was yesterday. He was my best buddy—the man in my life. We did everything together, from playing dolls to shooting hoops. We sang together, we watched movies. WITH COUPON SELECT TITLEShim, and We went to the zoo. We played baseball.ON I couldn’t be without when I had to leave him, I’d cry. There’s a picture I keep in my room of the two of us when I was around five years old. We’re in Disney World, and he’s holding me in his arms, standing next to Mary Poppins. That was my favorite movie, and we used to watch it together so much that my dad had to get another video of it, since I wore out the first one. Mary Poppins was my favorite person in the world, besides my dad. But I was scared to say hi to her, despite the gigantic grin on my face in the picture. My dad has a smile on his face too, but while I’m looking at Mary Poppins, he’s looking down at me. Glowing. The card was perfect to give to my dad because it was a reflection of our relationship. We’re still that close, and I don’t think it will ever change. Almost perfect, if you will. Just like our Father’s Day. Despite the bad weather, my family decided to make lemonade out of the lemons we were dealt and changed our plans for my dad’s celebratory day. Although spending the day down at the beach with the rest of our extended family, like we originally planned, would have been a nice relaxing day, we figured we’d move it to the backyard of our house and barbeque by the pool. Everyone came over around noon. My aunts helped my mom in the kitchen, while my cousins and I gathered around and peeled fresh corn. Every five minutes another person would come strolling in the front door and make the way to the kitchen where we were gathered, and everyone would go crazy. It was a welcoming party. A welcome home party. It felt good to see my family. I haven’t seen some of them in months—since Christmas, even. And it felt good to be able to sit and relax and take in the situation over filet and hotdogs and hamburgers and drinks, while the sun started to come out behind the clouds, and with the sound of the lapping of the water in the pool as it gently hit the edges. And the laughter of the kids, while they played with their toys away from the grill area. And our own laughter as we all caught up on each other’s lives, and joked, and conversed. And celebrated our fathers. And celebrated just being together.

The minister was preoccupied with thoughts of how he was going to ask the congregation to come up with more money than they were expecting for repairs to the church building. Therefore, he was annoyed to find that the regular organist was sick and a substitute had been brought in at the last minute. The substitute wanted to know what to play. “Here’s a copy of the service,” he said impatiently. “But, you’ll have to think of something to play after I make the announcement about the finances.” During the service, the minister paused and said, “Brothers and Sisters, we are in great difficulty; the roof repairs cost twice as much as we expected and we need $4,000 more. Any of you who can pledge $100 or more, please stand up.” At that moment, the substitute organist played “The Star Spangled Banner.” And that is how the substitute became the regular organist!

The owner of the carriage obviously had a sense of humor, because attached to the back of the carriage was a hand printed sign... “Energy efficient vehicle: Runs on oats and grass. Caution: Do not step in exhaust.” WildwoodMag.com

A minister waited in line to have his car filled with gas just before a long holiday weekend. The attendant worked quickly, but there were many cars ahead of him. Finally, the attendant motioned him toward a vacant pump. “Reverend,” said the young man, “I’m so sorry about the delay. It seems as if everyone waits until the last minute to get ready for a long trip.” The minister chuckled, “I know what you mean. It’s the same in my business.”
