About the

STORE DIRECTORY

Julia Child has this to say about cooking:

“This is my advice to people: Learn how to cook, try new recipes, learn from your mistakes, be fearless, and above all have fun!” Here at The Palms we’d like to suggest that before you can think about cooking, and thus by implication having fun, you need to think about your kitchen. And if you’re thinking about your kitchen, or any room in the house for that matter, you can’t afford not to visit The Palms this summer. It’s with good reason that The Palms is regarded as the one-stop destination for décor and design shopping. While you’re here, don’t forget to treat yourself to a meal, have your family’s portrait taken or even book your next vacation!

Coricraft’s new collection of must-have fabrics South Africans have come to love Coricraft’s extensive collection of locally manufactured stylish designs and customisable colours – and they are set to raise the bar even higher with their recently launched collection of new fabrics. Featuring a mix of bold and narrow stripes and geometrics, as well as a colour palette with brighter blues, daring reds and misty hues, the new range is certain to add a pop of colour and a new dimension to any home. Megan Morgan, furniture buyer for Coricraft explains, “The Fresco range is an update of our current Bohemian range, and the base cloth, Fresco Linen, is made up of 80% cotton and 20% linen. Patters include a plain colour from the Solido range, stripes from our Carnival collection and a decorative quatrefoil pattern called Patron - with a distinctive Moroccan influence.” The Jozi is a durable base cloth that has a soft touch but felt look and is a must for modern couches, with earthy tones in cement, sand and granite. The Greyton is slightly more affordable and durable, as it has a polyester component, but still boasts a great linen look with denim, cherry and pebble colours. The Benmore, with its heavy, thick textured fabrics, gives added dimension to the range. www.coricraft.co.za

Gonsenhausers

The finest rugs… and the personal touch

Coffee, a

Gonsenhausers Fine Rugs will host an exclusive summer sale of limited edition rugs at amazing value. Ranging from R1 800 to R2 800 per square meter, these fashionable rugs are available in the latest patterns and colours, perfect to inject some elegance into your home this holiday season. Stock is limited and the sale is too; so be sure to pop in before all these beautiful rugs sell out. www.finerugs.co.za

As a third generation rug dealer, Charles Gonsenhauser has had to keep ahead of the pack… and he’s the first to admit that there’s seldom an absence of the sounds of scratching at the door. The local market has seen a sudden influx of large global players all vying for a tiny slice of the local pie. So what’s the secret to Gonsenhausers’ success? Like most thriving businesses, there’s no single factor. Charles attributes it to a combination of things. Relationships are at the heart of this rug business. Relationships built over generations with the world’s best weaving centres for a start, and then a broad spectrum of personalised services for their customers, ranging from decorating advice and rug customisation, to appraisals, cleaning and restoration. The close bond developed with many decorators and designers who have come to trust the fashion-forward, highest quality and great value offering of the Gonsenhausers team bears testimony to power of a Gonsenhauser relationship. Charles often finds himself walking in these designers’ shoes, working closely with creators across the globe but more notably local creatives such as Julia Swanepoel and Peter Gordon. Pick up a Gonsenhauser rug and you’ll echo the sentiment of many – it’s the personal touch from Charles and his team that ensures this family run business offers exactly what people want. ikhael Bou Rjeily spills the beans on Byblos The Lebanese city of Byblos is where Mikhael Bou Rjeily, owner of Byblos Trading, began his working life. More importantly, it’s where he discovered his passion for coffee. “In a country whose people have weathered war and destruction, the culture has remained warm and friendly, and lends itself to communal coffee drinking and games of backgammon,” he points out, before going on to suggest that both are vital. To Mikhael, coffee is life, and at Byblos, life is coffee. “We strive to know everything there is about it,” he says, “and it’s why, when you deal with Byblos, you’ll soon appreciate that you’re dealing with

the experts – we’re about unyielding quality backed by years of expertise.” Visitors to their store can order Turkish Coffee and amazing cappuccinos, as well as gourmet syrups, powders, sauces and coffee beans, capsules and freshly ground coffee - including SA’s “Best Cappuccino” award winner, the Isabella Blend. For those keen to enjoy some of the other tastes of Turkey there is also Yerba Mate Tea, Turkish Apple Tea and Baklava. As a wholesaler, Byblos takes pride in supplying café owners with training coffee beans and other related products and is happy to help those starting out or keen to upgrade. Pride. Passion. Diligence. The hallmarks of our service, for the love of coffee.

Trip the Light Fantastic

At THE VINTAGE LAMP SHOP When you walk into The Vintage Lamp Shop, you know you’re dealing with somebody who has a wonderfully creative talent. William Schoeman is the proud owner of the shop and all the light fittings on display are made and modified by him personally.

and more

Not only will you see vintage and period light fittings, but there is always something else to catch your eye, like the office chair he made using a VW front seat, or the mangle that he restored to its previous glory. He’s also made bar stools using tractor seats and a glass coffee table using a tractor nose! William, or Smiley as he is affectionately known, has been in the light fitting business for more than 20 years and there is no light fitting too old or too difficult for him to fix. He prides himself in the range of rise-and-fall light fittings that he recently started manufacturing, as well as the bulkhead light fittings which he restores and mounts on different bases. Smiley loves taking different bits and pieces and creating something from it, and each time it comes out totally unique. No challenge is too big for him. You bring him your idea or design and he will do his utmost to create what you need. If you’re looking for a one of a kind light fitting, The Vintage Lamp Shop is where you are going to find it. Described by some as juvenile in style, this splatter, dripping or dribble technique was made famous by American artist Jackson Pollock in the 1950s. These rugs are hand-tufted from wool and bamboo silk and patterns range from elaborate to less complex splatters, whilst colours vary from bright and bold to more subdued hues, for those who are less brave. In House Furniture Stylstryd came to The Palms in Woodstock recently to film their new show where contestants battled it out for a sought-after position at Tuis/Home magazine. InHouse furniture was fortunate enough to supply several furniture pieces, as well as decor items for their set and can’t wait to see how the contestants will be using them to style their respective rooms. It was fun to meet the young contestants while they were in our showroom to select their bonus pieces from our wide selection of quirky items. RIOT Beer’s in the Top 10. ‘Valve’ IPA, from The Palms’ resident micro-brewery, RIOT, was recently judged in the top 10 craft beers in South Africa. The SAB Miller Craft beer awards judged over 100 beers nationwide, and RIOT’s IPA made the list of top 10 finalists. Valve, a full flavoured IPA (India Pale Ale), is known for its hoppy flavours and aromas. Marc Fourie, the head brewer had this to say about his award winning beer: “IPA is a real brewer’s guitar solo. It’s a complex mix of ingredients that needs to be carefully managed to get the best results, and not let things get out of hand.” RIOT’s brewery and tasting room is open on Friday evenings, and Saturday mornings, from 10:00 – 14:00 in parallel with The Palms Market on Saturday mornings. Their venue is available for function bookings outside of those times. Bottles are also available for purchase. For bookings visit www.riotbeer.co.za.
