BUD’S RUN, BIRMINGHAM 4 OCTOBER 2014 This fun, family-friendly 5K, held in honour of England Athletics National Coach mentor Bud Baldaro, takes place along a flat, traffic-free loop around the leafy University of Birmingham campus. Open to ‘anybody and everybody’, and with a civilised 2.30pm start time, there will also be a sprint track for kids, optional fancy dress and a post-run barbecue to help you and your family refuel.

STANDARD CHARTERED GREAT CITY RACE, LONDON 10 JULY 2014 A unique mid-week 5K corporate running challenge that takes place around the closed roads of the capital. The fast, flat course takes you past many City of London highlights, including St Paul’s Cathedral, the Museum of London, the Bank of England and Tower 42. Because it’s a corporate race, enter through your work company as a team of four or more.

THE POPPY RUN, TAUNTON 26 OCTOBER 2014 This 5K run, part of a nationwide series, is a chance for you to ‘Run to give for those who gave,’ and is an opportunity to raise money for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. Run, jog or walk this race, which is open to all and family friendly. The fun run with a serious message, all of the Poppy Runs are a wonderful way to give thanks to those who have given their lives for our freedom.

SELF TRANSCENDENCE 5K, LONDON 21 JULY 2014 One of a series of short races held in London’s beautiful Battersea Park throughout the year, this popular Monday night race is the perfect place to practise your speed work and aim for a PB, as it’s super flat and fast. Held over tarmac paths and packed tracks, all abilities are welcome and the atmosphere is great, with everyone getting a cheer as they cross the finish line.

MORUN, CARDIFF 16 NOVEMBER 2014 One of 14 MoRuns taking place across the country this ‘Movember’, to raise funds and awareness for men’s health, head to beautiful Bute Park to take part in this fantastic 5K (10K option available). To get into the spirit of things, you could always go out and purchase a stick-on moustache. Once you cross the finish line you’ll receive a MoRunning medal, headband and goody bag.

VALE OF CLWYD 5K, LLANDYRNOG 10 AUGUST 2014 Organised by Out-Fit Personal Training and Outdoor Fitness Specialists, the appeal of this road race lies in its beautiful scenic route, which takes you along a series of country lanes that are overlooked by the Clwydian Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Starting and finishing at the village hall, there is also a friendly atmosphere and good local support.

ENDMOOR 10K, ENDMOOR, NR KENDAL 9 JULY 2014 This lovely race is held on a Wednesday evening in a beautiful rural location. The surrounding countryside is a feast for the eyes as you run along the quiet country roads, but be warned – with great views come some super steep hills! OK it’s a tough one that will take your breath away, but there’s a lovely local feel at this village race. What better way to make the most of light evenings?

ASDA FOUNDATION LEEDS 10K, LEEDS 20 JULY 2014 Part of the Jane Tomlinson Run For All race series, this flagship road 10K underwent a revamp in 2013, with a new flatter and faster course. Now in its eighth year, it’s a perfect choice for first-timers or those chasing a PB. It takes in some iconic city-centre sites, including the Corn Exchange and Yorkshire Post Building, and the cheering crowds will help to spur you on to the finish.

WOMEN’S RUNNING 10K RACE SERIES, LONDON 27 SEPTEMBER 2014 Join the Women’s Running team at our very own 10K, in this, our Race Series finale at London’s Finsbury Park. The undulating route will see you running along wide, well-surfaced paths through the park. With a great Event Village, mass warm-up, packed goody bag, chip timing and pacers for all abilities, from beginners to improvers, it really is an event not to be missed.

THAMES 10K, PANGBOURNE, NR READING 30 JULY 2014 Taking place in picturesque Beale Park, this fun and friendly multi-terrain 10K starts and finishes by Beale Lake. The course is a mix of tarmac paths, woodland trails and river towpaths, giving you an idea of its scenic nature, and while there are a couple of gentle slopes, the route is generally flat. Bringing the family along? There is also a children’s and family one-mile fun run.

BHF HYDE PARK RUN 10K, LONDON 4 OCTOBER 2014 Help the British Heart Foundation keep hearts beating by taking part in a two-lap 10K fun run (there’s a single-lap 5K option as well) around this iconic Royal Park. The route weaves around the vast open space, taking in views of the Serpentine and Italian gardens, and because the whole race takes place over relatively flat, paved paths, it’s also buggy and wheelchair friendly.

ASDA FOUNDATION YORK 10K, YORK 3 AUGUST 2014 Part of the late Jane Tomlinson’s Run For All series, this beautiful flat 10K road race takes in many of the city’s highlights and impressive architecture. With a section along the river and under the city walls, runners also get to take in sites including Micklegate Bar and Clifford Tower. The highlight? Being cheered through St Helen’s Square and on to Duncombe Place, with views of York Minster.

DYRHAM PARK 10K, NR BATH 5 OCTOBER 2014 Owned by the National Trust, this beautiful 250 acres of parkland is home to more than 200 roaming deer, so you’ll be sure to see them as you run through the stunning grounds, landscaped gardens and along the avenues of trees. The route is three loops over an undulating, multi-terrain course. Runners can enjoy free entry into the park and gardens after the event, so stay for a picnic.

PRIDE RUN 10K, LONDON 9 AUGUST 2014 It’s the tenth anniversary of the Pride Run this year, which is held in London’s leafy Victoria Park. The flat route follows paths and is wheelchair accessible. Expect a great crowd and great support, plus all money raised will go towards supporting the charity Diversity Role Models, which aims to prevent homophobic and gender-based bullying in schools.

PETTS WOOD 10K, PETTS WOOD 12 OCTOBER 2014 This fun and friendly 10K, organised by Petts Wood Runners, has built up a reputation as an excellent event over the past seven years, so much so that it’s now a sell-out race. Set on a mixture of roads and trails (expect lots of mud!), the undulating route takes you though beautiful National Trust woodlands. Encouraging marshals will be there to cheer you all the way!

ASHTEAD 10K, ASHTEAD 7 SEPTEMBER 2014 This popular trail race through gorgeous Surrey countryside takes you over the paths and trails of Ashtead Common, past woodland and a nature reserve. But just as it will take your breath away because of the scenery, it will also take your breath away due to the hills. Oh yes, this one is certainly undulating. Watch out for the killer hill at 8K! Tough, but immensely rewarding.

CAMBRIDGE TOWN & GOWN 10K, CAMBRIDGE 12 OCTOBER 2014 This fantastic autumn 10K is a multi-terrain and scenic race that starts and finishes on Midsummer Common. The route then takes you out to stretch your legs alongside the beautiful Cambridge River, away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. Helping to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign, don your orange T-shirt and join in the fun!

LAKELAND TRAILS ULLSWATER, GLENRIDDING 2 NOVEMBER 2014 This 10K (there is also a 14K option) follows the well-marked, marshalled footpaths and bridleways along the lake shore, making this a beautiful scenic run. Expect some spectacular views of Helvellyn and the surrounding peaks, before the course dips into ancient woodland – especially beautiful with autumnal colours at this time of year.

SURREY BADGER HALF MARATHON, DORKING 13 JULY 2014 Starting at Denbies Wine Estate and heading out into beautiful Mole Valley Countryside, this undulating and multi-terrain course, which will see you running over tarmac, trails and footpaths, is a challenging half, but also one that’s fun and super scenic. As an added bonus, all finishers receive a bottle of Badger First Gold Beer on crossing the finish line.

ROBIN HOOD 10K TRAIL RUN, NOTTINGHAMSHIRE 8 NOVEMBER 2014 All abilities are welcome at this inclusive 10K, which offers fantastic scenery as you run through Sherwood Pines Forest Park. The course follows roads and trails throughout the forest, making for a safe, enjoyable race. Also on offer on the day are the Evil Sheriff Duathlon, Maid Marian 5K Trail Run and Little John 2K Fun Run, so there’s something for everyone!

NAPA TO SONOMA WINE COUNTRY HALF MARATHON, NAPA COUNTY, USA 20 JULY 2014 The flagship event in the Wine Country Half Marathon Series, this scenic road course takes you from the Cuvaison Carneros Winery, where you start amid rows of rolling vineyards, before carrying on past more wineries, ranches and farms, and on to the finish in historic Sonoma Plaza. Then celebrate with a glass of wine at the end!

BROOKS BRIGHTON 10K, BRIGHTON 16 NOVEMBER 2014 One thing’s for sure… Brighton is a great place to take part in a race! This fabulous flat road 10K takes place along the seafront, so expect a brisk sea breeze to blow those winter cobwebs away. Heading past both the Palace and West Piers, it also takes in the Peace Statue and finishes along Madeira Drive. Expect fantastic crowd support to spur you on to the finish line.

INDIAN QUEENS HALF MARATHON, INDIAN QUEENS, NR NEWQUAY 3 AUGUST 2014 This scenic, low-key race is limited to 600 runners, so it’s a great one to do if you like your races fairly small and with a friendly vibe. The multi-terrain route is set over an undulating course and, aside from the first and last miles, which see you running through the village, it’s predominantly rural, heading out into the countryside with five miles along trails.

LEEDS ABBEY DASH, LEEDS 16 NOVEMBER 2014 Organised by the charity Age UK, this 10K takes in many of the sites of the city centre, including Kirkstall Abbey. The out-and-back route follows flat roads and has a reputation as a PB buster, but would also be a great one for first-time 10K runners, due to its course profile and friendly vibe. It’s a fairly big race, so expect a bustling atmosphere and good local support.

ROCK ’N’ ROLL DUBLIN HALF MARATHON, DUBLIN 4 AUGUST 2014 This summer half marathon features a scenic course that takes in many of Dublin’s famous sites, including the Irish Museum of Modern Art, plus a nice stretch along the river and a finish in picturesque Phoenix Park. As you would expect from the Rock ’n’ Roll Series, there are also live local bands en route to keep your motivation high, plus fantastic crowd support.

CROSS BAY CHALLENGE, HEST BANK, LANCASHIRE 6 JULY 2014 A half marathon with a difference: run across the sands at Morecombe Bay to the finish in Flookburgh, Cumbria… before the tide comes in! This tidal bay race is certainly unique and is also steeped in history – the crossing dates back to the 13th century, when monks from local abbeys served as guides. A must-do for off-road enthusiasts… can you beat the bay?

ISLE OF MAN HALF MARATHON, RAMSEY 10 AUGUST 2014 Held at the north of the island, this road race is undulating for the first five miles (watch out for the killer hill at mile four), but relatively flat for the remainder – and the scenery more than makes up for your efforts in this low-key half marathon. Praised for its friendly atmosphere and good organisation, there is also a full marathon option (two laps) if you’re up for a bigger challenge.

CHEDDAR GORGE HALF MARATHON, CHEDDAR 17 AUGUST 2014 A super-demanding course (there’s a 600m climb simply to get to the start line!), the route is incredibly hilly, and the terrain varied and exciting, so off-road shoes are highly recommended. Expect stunning scenery and aching legs as you take on the route, which includes ‘Hell Steps’ and a speedy descent to the finish line in Strawberry Fields, where crowds congregate to cheer you on.

BRISTOL HALF MARATHON, BRISTOL 21 SEPTEMBER 2014 Starting in Bristol’s historic harbourside, the scenic, sea-level route includes an out-and-back stretch along the Portway, which sees you pass twice under Brunel’s famous Clifton Suspension Bridge, before returning to the city centre. It’s a popular race, but the two-wave start helps to ease congestion. Expect plenty of support and a wonderful city-centre atmosphere.

BUPA GREAT NORTH RUN, NEWCASTLE 7 SEPTEMBER 2014 A record 56,000 runners take part in this annual event, which is now firmly established as one of the world’s top half marathons. The undulating route takes you along crowd-lined main roads from Newcastle out to the coast at South Shields. The highlights? Running across the Tyne Bridge, the magical race-day atmosphere and, of course, the appearance from the Red Arrows.

ENGLISH HALF MARATHON, WARRINGTON 21 SEPTEMBER 2014 Runners have lots of great things to say about this race: the scenery is picturesque as you head out of Victoria Park and through the surrounding countryside and villages; local support is great, with large crowds cheering you on; the organisation is superb; and it has an all-round friendly vibe. Yes, it’s hilly, so make sure you’re prepared for those uphill stretches!

CHIPPENHAM HALF MARATHON, CHIPPENHAM 7 SEPTEMBER 2014 Perfect for first-time half marathon runners or those chasing a new PB, this is run over a predominantly flat road route. Starting and finishing at Chippenham Sports Club and initially following a course through the centre of town, you will then head out along quiet, scenic country lanes, and through villages and hamlets. www.chippenhamhalf

FOREST OF DEAN AUTUMN HALF MARATHON, NR LYDNEY 28 SEPTEMBER 2014 Set entirely within the beautiful Forest of Dean, this hilly half is something of a stunner. Admire the gorgeous end-of-summer foliage as you run on way-marked forest trails (with just a few short closed road sections) – and with no road crossings to contend with whatsoever, you can focus purely on your pace and the surroundings. www.forestofdean-half

KENT COASTAL HALF MARATHON, CLIFTONVILLE 7 SEPTEMBER 2014 A hilly coastal route, which is primarily run along roads (although there are some short unpaved sections too), this half marathon offers some lovely sea views to take your mind off all those ascents! Heading out from just outside Margate, the out-and-back route takes you past Broadstairs. The super-supportive marshals offer plenty of cheers, too, to spur you on to the finish.

IKANO ROBIN HOOD HALF MARATHON, NOTTINGHAM 28 SEPTEMBER 2014 This is a fast, flat course, taking you through the University of Nottingham and affording you views of the castle and Nottingham Forest FC. There is also a marathon and mini-marathon taking place. Want to make it even more fun? PHARMALINK MAIDENHEAD HALF MARATHON, MAIDENHEAD 7 SEPTEMBER 2014 This flat, traffic-free road course has fantastic PB potential. The race starts in the town centre, before taking runners out onto a scenic route of the surrounding areas. This one’s also good for spectators, as the two-lap course provides ample opportunities to spot runners, plus there’s a great selection of cafés and restaurants for a refuelling lunch stop afterwards!

SOLENT HALF MARATHON, HOLBURY 28 SEPTEMBER 2014 This friendly multi-terrain race, with up to 500 entrants, follows a lovely course that winds through the beautiful New Forest (keep an eye out for the ponies that roam free in the area), and along the Solent shore at Lepe, which affords glorious sea views. Picturesque and peaceful, the post-race massage on offer at the end tops off a truly gorgeous race.

WINDSOR HALF MARATHON, LONDON 28 SEPTEMBER 2014 This beautiful half marathon is held on traffic-free roads across an undulating course, so expect it to be fairly challenging. The route, though, more than makes up for it. Starting on the impressive tree-lined Long Walk, with Windsor Castle as a backdrop, you will complete two laps of Windsor Great Park before returning to the castle for a memorable finish.

OXFORD HALF MARATHON, OXFORD 12 OCTOBER 2014 Set in the centre and surrounding countryside of this world-famous university city, this single-lap, relatively flat, traffic-free course is pretty inspiring. Along the way you’ll pass the track where Roger Bannister broke the four-minute mile in 1954, breeze past university grounds, see the city’s iconic spires and finish in the Kassam Stadium, home to Oxford United FC.

BOURNEMOUTH HALF MARATHON 5 OCTOBER 2014 Part of the Bournemouth Marathon Festival weekend – which also includes a full marathon – this is coastal running at its best. Following the route of the full marathon, the race takes in both Boscombe and Bournemouth piers, and with various other distances and children’s races taking place over the weekend, there’s something sporty for everyone to take part in.

PERKINS GREAT EASTERN RUN, PETERBOROUGH 12 OCTOBER 2014 One of the fastest-growing half marathons in the UK, this is a fast, flat road race, ideal if you fancy your chances at a PB. Following a historic city-centre route, runners get to experience the best of the city, as well as fantastic support from the locals. BANK OF SCOTLAND GREAT SCOTTISH RUN, GLASGOW 5 OCTOBER 2014 This fab, family-friendly weekend of running should definitely be on your to-do list. As well as the half marathon, which starts in George Square and finishes on Glasgow Green, and takes in some of the city’s most iconic landmarks and buildings en route, there is also a 10K race (a shorter adaptation of the half), plus a family run, junior race and toddler dash… guaranteed fun for everyone!

ROYAL PARKS FOUNDATION HALF MARATHON, LONDON 12 OCTOBER 2014 This spectacular 13.1-mile route takes you past some of the capital’s most iconic landmarks, including Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament and the Royal Albert Hall, as well as weaving through four of London’s eight royal parks – Hyde Park, Green Park, St James’s Park and Kensington Gardens. A city race has never been so green! The flat course attracts great crowd support, too.

LLOYDS BANK CARDIFF HALF MARATHON, CARDIFF 5 OCTOBER 2014 A fantastic, predominantly flat road race in Wales’s capital city that’s perfect for beginners and experienced runners alike. The scenic route takes in all the sites: starting at Cardiff Castle, you’ll then run past Cardiff City Stadium, before taking in the glorious Penarth Marina, crossing the barrage and heading to Cardiff Bay. A lap of beautiful Roath Park Lake tops it off, before your Grandstand finish!

MARLOW STRIDERS HALF MARATHON, MARLOW 2 NOVEMBER 2014 A hilly, picturesque route, which starts in the charming historic town of Marlow and then climbs up and out into surrounding countryside. But what goes up must come down, and you will appreciate the several descents when they come. There’s wonderful support and the marshals will cheer you on all the way. AVIEMORE HALF MARATHON, AVIEMORE 12 OCTOBER 2014 With the Cairngorm Mountains as a spectacular backdrop, this multi-terrain race starts 1,100ft above sea level. Following forest tracks through the beautiful Glenmore Forest Park, famous for its Caledonian pinewoods, and taking a turn around Loch Morlich, which has been awarded a Rural Beach Award, the final stretch follows roads to a welcoming finish line 720ft above sea level.

THE POPPY HALF MARATHON, BEXHILL-ON-SEA 8 NOVEMBER 2014 Road closures and a flat route give you a great chance of achieving a personal best at this seafront half marathon. The multi-lap event makes it a great one for spectator support, as you get to see your loved ones on several occasions as you race past. GRAND UNION CANAL HALF MARATHON, UXBRIDGE 9 NOVEMBER 2014 This is a flat, scenic, multi-terrain, point-to-point race that takes you from Cowley Recreation Ground, Uxbridge, along the Grand Union Canal to Cassiobury Park, Watford. The lovely route is unusual, hence its stand-out appeal, and it is traffic free apart from one minor road crossing, so you can concentrate solely on your stride. It can get muddy in places… enjoy getting stuck in!

IAG GUERNSEY WATERFRONT MARATHON, ST PETER PORT 24 AUGUST 2014 Starting and finishing at the waterfront in St Peter Port, this stunning 26.2-miler takes you along some of Guernsey’s most picturesque roads and lanes. After an uphill start of 1.5 miles, the course is then relatively flat until you descend onto the west coast, where you pass an array of sandy bays and inlets, before finishing on the Albert Pier. Just beautiful!

ROCK ’N’ ROLL LAS VEGAS HALF MARATHON, LAS VEGAS, USA 16 NOVEMBER 2014 Want to race along the Las Vegas Strip at night? Then this half is for you! CONWY HALF MARATHON, CONWY 23 NOVEMBER 2014 Now in its sixth year, last year saw some 3,000 runners set off along the quayside in front of the 700-year-old Conwy Castle. The route runs on the road adjacent to the Conwy River, out towards Llandudno Pier, taking in views of the Isle of Anglesey, Puffin Island and the North Wales coastline. It’s a simply stunning course and, on top of that, a good one for achieving a PB.

BACCHUS MARATHON, DORKING 14 SEPTEMBER 2014 Set in the stunning Denbies Wine Estate, this race has a twist. As well as the usual fuel and water stations, you will also find wine-tasting stations, in case you fancy a tipple as you trot around the undulating, multi-terrain 26.2 miles. With an emphasis on fun, you will also be treated to a post-race glass of wine and a hog roast. Fancy dress is encouraged!

LAKELAND TRAILS MARATHON, CONISTON 6 JULY 2014 Definitely one of the most scenic trail marathons in the UK, this 26.2-miler sees you run a complete circuit of Coniston Water along footpaths and bridleways. PURBECK MARATHON, SWANAGE 14 SEPTEMBER 2014 This predominantly off-road marathon comprises more than 2,000ft of climbs. It takes in stunning Durlston Country Park and the Jurassic Coast Path, before heading on to the picturesque villages of Worth Matravers and Kingston. The final stretch will leave you breathless (in more ways than one!) as you run along the ridge of the Purbeck Hills to Corfe Castle.

THE WALES MARATHON, TENBY 13 JULY 2014 Starting and finishing in Tudor Square, Tenby, this hilly route takes place along closed roads throughout south Pembrokeshire, looping out to Pembroke Castle. The scenery is impressive, with the stretch heading down towards Manorbier a particular highlight, so make sure you take in the views to take your mind off the inclines! A pretty tough one, but well worth it.

HELLY HANSEN BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, HIGH WYCOMBE 20 SEPTEMBER 2014 The spectacular views coupled with huge hills give this multi-lap trail marathon its name! SWISS CITY MARATHON, LUCERNE, SWITZERLAND 26 OCTOBER 2014 This relatively flat marathon (there are just a few undulations a third of the way along the route) held in and around the beautiful Swiss city of Lucerne is a great one for PB chasers and first-time marathon runners alike. Starting and finishing close to the city centre, the route takes in many of the city’s highlights and also includes a stretch through leafy Phoenix Park. Expect great crowd support as you head from the park back towards the centre!

CANCER RESEARCH UK RACE FOR LIFE PRETTY MUDDY, BRISTOL 5 JULY 2014 Cancer plays dirty… but so can you! TOUGH MUDDER MIDLANDS, KETTERING 12 & 13 JULY 2014 This ten to 12 mile event is designed to test your strength, stamina, mental grit and camaraderie. Boughton House is home to some pretty thick woodland, so expect some tough log obstacles thrown in. But once you’ve conquered the forest, you’re not out of the woods: with tons of natural water obstacles, plus some Tough Mudder classics (Electroshock Therapy, anyone?), are you tough enough?

ATHENS AUTHENTIC MARATHON, ATHENS, GREECE 9 NOVEMBER 2014 A legendary marathon, this covers the same route Athenian messenger Phiedippides ran when he brought news of victory from the battlefield of Marathon 2,500 years ago. The finish line is in Athens’s Olympic Stadium, the birthplace of the modern Olympic Games. AUTUMN SHAKESPEARE MARATHON, STRATFORD-UPON-AVON 15 NOVEMBER 2014 A marathon with a twist – this one comprises multiple laps of a 5K course, which brings an array of plus points. The course is a PB-chaser’s dream, being flat, tarmac and traffic-free, which all equates to one thing – it’s fast! On top of which, there is the opportunity for spectators to see you multiple times, meaning more cheers from loved ones along the way!

SPARTAN RACE, EDINBURGH 21 SEPTEMBER 2014 Held within the stunning grounds of Winton House, this Spartan Sprint (roughly 5K) integrates 15 obstacles with some tough natural terrain. It will test your strength and stamina, but will also see you build bonds as you help your fellow Spartans along the course. Other Spartan Races are held across the country, too. Every course is unique, but expect to get very wet and muddy at them all!

PORTSMOUTH COASTAL WATERSIDE MARATHON, PORTSMOUTH 21 DECEMBER 2014 A Christmas-time marathon with a difference: this one starts at the South Parade Pier and hugs the edge of Langstone Harbour right along the Hayling Billy Line, before you turn tail and head back. The catch? Take longer than the six-hour cut-off and you might get wet feet, due to tide times! Plenty of Christmas cheer is on offer (as well as mulled wine, brandy and rum!).

THE MAJOR SERIES: NORTH, LEEDS 12 OCTOBER 2014 With a focus on teamwork and fun, this is littered with obstacles, hills, mud and water – and 40 of the Major’s finest troops will be on hand to help you out. When the obstacles have names such as Ibbot’s Ice Crawl and Stench Trenches, you know you’re in for a challenge… but you’ll have a smile on your face as you take it on! There are other dates and locations nationwide, too.







THE SUFFERING OBSTACLE RACE, MARKET HARBOROUGH 8 & 9 NOVEMBER 2014 Yes, Rockingham Castle’s Great Park is undoubtedly a beautiful location, but don’t be fooled… set in 130 acres of hills, mud, slopes and forest, this is not for the faint-hearted! Add to that more than 25 obstacles, with names such as the Tyre Carry Hill Run, Giant Walls and Spider’s Web, plus the fact it’s winter, and you’ll soon see that the event lives up to its name!

RACE THE TRAIN, TYWYN, MID WALES 16 AUGUST 2014 With a 14-mile and 10K option (plus children’s and toddler races), this one is certainly unique! Taking place alongside the route of the Talyllyn Railway and back, the undulating course heads over public roads, lanes, un-metalled roads, tracks and agricultural land as you race the steam train. As an added bonus, friends and family can ride the train to cheer you along en route!

GRIM ORIGINAL, ALDERSHOT 6 & 7 DECEMBER 2014 Held at army vehicle testing grounds, this one’s tough! Set over approximately eight miles, prepare to encounter trails, hills, mud, moguls, sand dunes, logs, bogs, railway tracks… and lots and lots of water! You can enter as an individual, or if you’d prefer to split the challenge, as a team of three in either the women-only, men-only or mixed team categories.

KYLES 10 MILES, ARGYLL’S SECRET COAST 6 SEPTEMBER 2014 The beauty of this challenging road race is undoubtedly its stunning scenery. Two hours from Glasgow, the circular route around the Ardlamont Peninsula takes runners along a secluded coastal road covering part of Argyll’s Secret Coast, taking in majestic mountains and views out towards Arran and the Mull of Kintyre. If you like a challenge, this one’s for you.

NEW FOREST 10, BROCKENHURST 13 JULY 2014 This lovely picturesque ten-miler in Hampshire’s beautiful New Forest National Park is set over undulating roads and tracks. Expect to run through a stunning mosaic of woodland and open, heather-covered heaths, and don’t forget to look out for the ponies, which roam free through the forest! Commemorative horse-brass medals are a great touch.

ERIDGE PARK 10K TRAIL CHALLENGE, NR TUNBRIDGE WELLS 7 SEPTEMBER A fantastic ten-mile cross-country race raved about by all who take part! Yes it’s tough, with some killer ascents, but you’ll be rewarded by a jaunt through a deer park, plus views out across the beautiful Kent countryside. Encouraging marshals offer plenty of support along the route, and past runners are quick to praise the wonderful organisation (plus the beer and cake at the finish!).

RACE TO THE STONES, CHINNOR 19-20 JULY 2014 Running from the Chilterns in Oxfordshire to the North Wessex Downs, the Ridgeway is the oldest path in Britain. Your challenge? To follow it for 100K, almost entirely through designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Highlights include the White Horse of Uffington and Barbury Castle, finishing at Avebury Stone Circle. Run or walk the undulating, off-road route in one go, or split it over two days.

VICTORY 5, PORTSMOUTH 14 SEPTEMBER 2014 This flat and fast five-mile road race starts and finishes at the Mountbatten Centre, which offers excellent changing and refreshment facilities, and comprises a single lap which takes in both the Stamshaw Promenade and 1,000 Lakeside. But the real pull of this race is its PB potential over five miles – it attracts top athletes from the UK and overseas.

ADIDAS THUNDER RUN 24HR, WALTON-ON-TRENT 26-27 JULY 2014 Test your endurance, speed and mental strength as you embark on this 24-hour relay race. Set over an off-road, hilly, 10K trail course, it’s a tough but rewarding experience. Take part as a team or (if you really like a challenge) as a solo runner. Camaraderie is high as you run side by side through the day and night. The festival-like atmosphere at the campsite will keep your spirits high.

ROUND RIPON ULTRA 35, RIPON 4 OCTOBER 2014 Combining a relaxed village start, well-stocked checkpoints and stunning scenery, this challenging 35-mile multi-terrain course in the Yorkshire Dales will take you along woodland tracks and across open moorland, past a world heritage site, picturesque villages and through Studley Royal Deer Park. Take part as an individual runner or as part of a relay team.

BENNACHIE HILL RACE, ABERDEENSHIRE 5 OCTOBER 2014 Firmly established in the hill-running race calendar as one of the most popular races in North-East Scotland, the 2014 running of this event sees it celebrating its 25th year. At just over eight miles (12.8K) in length, and with a total of 1,150ft (550m) ascent, the route sees you run up Bennachie. If you’re up for the challenge, it’s pretty breathtaking (in several ways!).

BUPA GREAT SOUTH RUN, PORTSMOUTH 26 OCTOBER 2014 This famous fast and flat ten miler is now in its 25th year. Taking in some top local attractions, including the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, Portsmouth Cathedral, Spinnaker Tower and HMS Victory, there are also plenty of live bands along the route that will keep you going all the way to the final stretch along the seafront and on to the finish line.

ROYAL PARKS FOUNDATION ULTRA, LONDON 12 OCTOBER 2014 Running from Hyde Park in the city centre out towards Bushy Park in West London, this stunning 50K ultra will see you take in five of the capital’s royal parks, pass two palaces and meander west out of the city along the relaxing and shaded Thames towpath. A fully supported race with great crowd support at key points, this is a must if 26.2 miles just aren’t enough for you.

BROOKS HELLRUNNER HELL UP NORTH, DELAMERE 1 NOVEMBER 2014 Think multi-terrain taken to the extreme! The course comprises trails, tracks, mud, super-steep hills and water-filled areas (expect to get wet!). Billed as ‘nature at its toughest’, the course is marked (and you may see an appearance from the Devil to guide you on your way!), but there are no mile markers: simply expect the course to be anywhere from ten to 12 miles long… and get stuck in!

GARMIN KINGSTON RUN CHALLENGE, KINGSTON 12 OCTOBER 2014 With three race distances on offer (8.2 miles, 16 miles or 24 miles), plus a 24-mile relay challenge, this is a great marathon-training run, or a good way to push your distance up from the traditional 10K. The fast, flat course takes in the Thames towpath, Hampton Court Palace and Kingston town centre, and experienced pacers are on-hand to help you hit your running goals.

EASY RUNNER SODBURY SLOG, CHIPPING SODBURY 9 NOVEMBER 2014 A gentle trot through the countryside this is not. Trails? Check. Hills? Definitely! Mud, bogs and marshes? Yes, yes and yes! The nine-mile route takes you from the start at the school out onto Sodbury Common, before heading through the hamlet of Little Sodbury End, through Tungrove Farm and then up onto the Cotswold Way. Our top tip? Leave those new white running shoes at home.

HICKSTEAD GALLOP 8K FUN RUN, HICKSTEAD 12 OCTOBER 2014 This is your chance to trot around the grounds of the famous Hickstead All England course. While you won’t get to run through the showjumping ground itself (horses only, we’re afraid), you won’t be far away. Running in this unique venue will see you canter past the start line three times as you head in ever-widening circles, before galloping to the finish line!

LONDON SANTA RUN, LONDON 6 DECEMBER 2014 Don festive fancy dress and join 2,000 other Santas in this fun 6K frolic around Battersea Park. Your race fee includes your Santa suit, so there’s no excuse not to get dressed up! The flat course along tarmac paths makes it suitable for all and there is no age limit (although children under eight need to run with an adult). Guaranteed to spread a little Christmas spirit!

CABBAGE PATCH 10 MILE RACE, TWICKENHAM 19 OCTOBER 2014 This famously flat road race starts and finishes in Twickenham, passing through nearby Kingston and Richmond. The sell-out, well-organised event has fabulous PB potential and has attracted some famous athletes in past years, including 2012 Olympic double gold medallist Mo Farah.
