THE WIGAN & LEIGH EXPERIENCE BEYOND THE CLASSROOM Life beyond the classroom is rich, varied and rewarding at Wigan & Leigh College. You have every opportunity to enhance your learning with wider achievements, which are not only loads of fun, but provide a welcome boost when applying for university and employment. Enrichment activities develop new interests, increase knowledge and skills, improve your self-confidence and provide a welcome respite from the pressure of passing exams. You could even become a contender in College-wide, regional or national competitions.

WORLD SKILLS CHAMPIONS Two Pre-Degree Nursing students progressed to the national heats of the World Skills Health and Social Care competition. Molly Evans and Jane Woodall fended off hundreds of other competitors to reach the national heats at the NEC in Birmingham, earning the chance to attend the world final in Russia in 2019.

ENGINEERING COMPETITION WINNERS Students enjoyed competition success this year at the Greater Manchester Colleges Group(GMCG) Skills Competition. The winner of the Electrical Engineering Level 2 competition was David Cottrell, former Lathom High School pupil. The winner of the Computer Aided Design 3D Competition was Thomas Fort, former Westleigh High School pupil.

DUKE OF YORK WHAT’S THE BIG IDEA? Prince Andrew, Duke of York, gave the Royal seal of approval to students and apprentices who gained digital skills on the iDEA programme. Aspiring to be the digital and enterprise equivalent of the Duke of Edinburgh Award, iDEA, backed by the Duke of York, is a free online programme. The Duke presented certificates, at an event held at the Turnpike arts centre in Leigh, and praised students’ and apprentices’ commitment to developing digital skills, vitally important in all modern workplaces.

ENGLISH + MATHS = SUCCESS SECURE YOUR FUTURE, UNLOCK ENGLISH AND MATHS

ESSENTIAL

Whether you want to be a joiner, bricklayer, engineer, chef or hairdresser, you will need English and maths. English and maths are essential elements of all study programmes. Students who have not achieved grade 4 in English and Maths GCSE will need to re-sit them.

English and maths skills are used in everyday life. Whether you are sending texts, paying for the bus or reading a train timetable, you are using English and maths. We are committed to helping you gain these essential qualifications, so you have the best possible chance in life and your future career. When you join us you do not need to sign up to do English and maths, as we already include these subjects in your timetable. We will use your qualifications on entry to place you on a suitable course, tailored to your ability and interests.

SKILLS FOR

SUCCESS

What if I have passed my GCSE English and/or Maths? If you have already achieved your GCSE English and/or Maths, we will help you to develop these skills further. Our tutors will point out which English and maths topics you are practicing in your sessions. We also have online resources to help you improve your skills. We will share these with you when you enrol. Interviews may include an English or maths test, so keep practicing those skills for success.

BRADEN BUTLER Former school: Byrchall High School Course: BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma Electrical and Electronic Engineering HND Mechanical Engineering Braden progressed from the full-time Level 3 course to a Nuclear Engineering Degree apprenticeship, working for National Nuclear Laboratory, while studying the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Mechanical Engineering. As the winner of a prestigious Engineering Horizons Bursary from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), Braden receives £1,000 annually, to support him during his studies. Only 75 bursaries are awarded to UK engineering students and apprentices each year. Winners also benefit from mentoring and work experience placements through the IET’s extensive networks. Degree apprenticeships are co-designed by employers to equip apprentices with the skills employers need and to boost their employment prospects. They combine university study and workplace learning, so that apprentices may achieve a degree while earning a salary. Employers also take on study costs, so degree apprentices not only earn while they learn, but don’t have to meet the cost of tuition fees.

This guide was printed on 5th September 2018 for the 19/20 intake. Wigan & Leigh College (the ‘College’) endeavours to ensure that the information in this publication is accurate at the time of going to publication, but because this prospectus has been printed in advance of courses starting dates, all courses are offered subject to student numbers and the College reserves the right to amend, withdraw or amalgamate any of the courses, fees, services, locations or facilities described at any time before you apply for a place on a course of study. There are a number of reasons why changes to course information may need to be made prior to you applying for a place on a course at the College. These may include, but are not limited to, operational and/or academic reasons. Prospective students are therefore reminded that they are responsible for ensuring, prior to applying to study on a course of study at the College, that they review up-to-date course information, which is available by visiting www.wigan-leigh.ac.uk or by contacting us at 01942 761 111.
