Glückliche Hand bei der Wahl der Maestri A new generation has already begun to shape the future.

It is a given that “The Great Symphony” – like the Wiener Symphoniker’s cycle of the same name a mainstay of the Musikverein’s programme – also looks to the core symphonic repertoire of the Classical and Romantic periods, with programmes devised to be as attractive as the roster of conductors performing them. Returning maestri of international renown such as Vladimir Fedoseyev, Manfred Honeck, Alain Altinoglu and Alan Gilbert, most recently music director of the New York Philharmonic, are joined by sensational debuts. Nikolaj Znaider, one of the world’s leading violinists for over two decades, makes his conducting debut at the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde at the head of the Symphoniker, and 29year old Lorenzo Viotti will be giving his first performance at the Musikverein on stage with the Symphoniker.

That this orchestra has the luck of the draw when it comes to choosing its maestri can be seen not least from the story of its Principal Guest Conductor, Lahav Shani. The young Israeli was also recently designated the next music director of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. Shani is also tackling Franz Liszt at the Musikverein, providing the perfect complement to the focus on Berlioz. Both were modern composers, both were musicians who polarised opinion. The tension in their work is a tonic even today. The truth doesn’t always have to lie somewhere in the middle.
