THE POWER OF LITERACY One of the most powerful things in our world is an idea. Literacy gives us the tools to take an idea, develop it, share it, refine it and perfect it. Literacy, being able to take in information and utilize that information, is as necessary a skill today as it was a hundred years ago. There are so many types of literacy: technology literacy, financial literacy, information literacy, cultural literacy. Each one allows us to put to work a set of unique skills and information so that we can make a contribution that is our own. During March, April and May we celebrate literacy. Traditional reading literacy as well as other literacies such as computer literacy, health literacy and financial literacy. From our regularly scheduled classes and events such as computer training or therapy dog sessions, to services like Project READ, we believe that literacy is the key that opens doors to all kinds of opportunities. Our Friends of the Libraries celebrate the power of literacy with their Light of Literacy Awards Breakfast. So bring us your idea. Let us work with you to develop that idea into something positive, something you can share. As Carl Sagan stated, “Books permit us to voyage through time, to tap the wisdom of our ancestors. The library connects us with the insight and knowledge, painfully extracted from Nature, of the greatest minds that ever were, with the best teachers, drawn from the entire planet and from all our history, to instruct us without tiring, and to inspire us to make our own contribution to the collective knowledge of the human species. - Carl Sagan, Comos Andrea Berstler, Executive Director
