THOUGHTS FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
SPRING 2020 Literacy is the key to lifelong learning, which is why I’m always excited for the Light of Literacy Awards. This year’s event is on April 7, 2020 and the ceremony will feature an award for Arts Literacy. Literacy opens your mind to not only books but also to new ideas. Symphony 21 Founder and Eastern Shore native Daniel Bowen will be our keynote speaker to demonstrate why the arts are so important to learners everywhere! Speaking of the arts, you don’t want to miss jazz musician Galen Abdur-Razzaq—thanks to a Maryland Humanities Council grant. Mr. Abdur-Razzaq will join us on March 5 to teach a history of the Civil Rights Movement through jazz. From paint night to beginner’s crochet to story time to youth led open mic nights, Wicomico Public Libraries inspires creativity and learning. Our spring issue is full of events to spark your imagination! We also celebrate National Library Week this spring from April 19-25, 2020 with the theme “Find Your Place at the Library.” Libraries have shifted from a place for books and materials to the place to be. Join us in April as WPL staff show off their library spirit! National Library Week is also a great time to show off your library spirit by joining the Friends of Wicomico Public Libraries. Our Friends are a community volunteer group that promotes and supports the library through fundraising and advocacy. I look forward to seeing you at the Light of Literacy Awards and in the library!
