THOUGHTS FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
A HISTORY OF COMMUNITY & MORE Did you know 2019 marks the 150th anniversary of Wicomico Public Libraries? In 1869, Wicomico Public Library started out as a subscription library just two years after Wicomico County was formed. Today, we are a free full-service public library offering unique programs to meet our community’s needs. For example, did you know Wicomico Public Libraries has a Job Search Center and Homework Help Center? We also have Project READ, a free one-on-one adult literacy program, to help adult learners gain the skills needed to improve their quality of life. In addition to the Bookmobile, we also have a Reader Van that provides kits designed to make it easier for childcare providers to introduce reading to small children. The Reader Van program is being replicated in other counties throughout Maryland, including Allegany, Charles, Prince Georges and Washington counties. From the Advanced Robotics Club at the Centre Branch to crafting programs at the Pittsville Branch, Wicomico Public Libraries has something for everyone! How can you put a price on all of the great things at your library? I’m also excited to announce Salisbury University’s Business Economic and Community Outreach Network’s (BEACON) economic impact study which found that for every dollar invested in the library, the community gets $5.40 of value in return. That’s a tremendous return on investment for Wicomico County! Please go to our website, www.wicomicolibraries.org, to read the full report. As we celebrate 150 years in 2019, I want you to know the library is more than just books. The library is where everyone is welcome, where connections are made, and where lives are transformed. I look forward to hearing your stories about the impact the library has had on your life, www.wicomicolibraries.org/suggestions-feedback. Ashley Teagle, Executive Director
