Agreeable climate bathes visitors in Cochise County comfort
O
ne of the features that attracts people to Cochise County is its generally mild weather almost year-round.
Climate Averages
There will be an average of 284 days of sun and an average of 55 days of some sort of precipitation from rain to sleet to snow, according to the National Weather Service. What rain does arrive during each much anticipated monsoon from mid-June to mid-September can make travel a bit difficult even though the average rainfall is just 14 inches. Rain falling in the Huachuca, Mules and Chiricahua mountains runs down into the valleys and produces sheetflow, turning the landscape into the look of a massive shallow lake. A heavy downpour in the mountains fills the myriad washes with such vast amounts of stormwater that it can cause road closings. While closures can be an inconvenience, it is one that receives few complaints. The summer rains provide lifesaving water for wildlife and

much needed irrigation for yards, gardens, rainwater harvesting systems and the large agricultural industry in the county. The rain also cleans the air of dust and brings with it that unmistakable, musky scent that seems to be the sigh of the desert itself.
With no major sources of pollution, the county’s skies are generally clear and blue by day, though when the clouds begin to build, the shapes created are spectacular to behold. And, nature always paints the sunrises and sunsets with colors beyond description. Come sundown, the perfect dark of night sets the backdrop for the breathtaking view of the planets and stars to the delight of backyard stargazers and amateur astronomers. During the dry, windy days from March through the start of the monsoon, dust can kick up and create a yellow tint on the horizon. The annual BestPlaces Comfort Index for Cochise County is 8.1 (10 is the highest), which means it is one of the most pleasant places in Arizona. October, April and May are the most pleasurable months in Cochise County, while July and January are the least comfortable.

California exodus sparks real estate sales
I
t could be said there’s a premium on a one-way ticket to Willcox.
February last year and hasn’t abated. The rental market also is thriving, but that’s nothing new.
Willcox? That quiet city in the north central portion of Cochise County?
“The rental market in Willcox has always been a huge business,” Welch says. “I mean, if you have a rental, you’re making money. They’re few and far between.
It just might be true. The housing market is off the charts, according to one real estate agent, powered by an influx from the west. “Sales are way up, we are booming,” says Nancy Welch, associate broker and branch manger at DiPeso Realty. “We have hardly any inventory. Things are selling, where it used to be on the market three to six months, things are being listed in the morning and getting multiple offers in the afternoon.”
“We tried to pinpoint that ourselves why Willcox is such (a strong rental market) and there’s just really no rhyme nor reason to it. Some people say it’s because of the type of migrant workers that come in, go out in the different seasons.” All which is a plus if you are an agent in Willcox.
Welch cites one factor for the surge. “A lot of people are wanting out of California,” she says. “That’s our primary customers, 95 percent are from California. And they’re all coming and paying cash.” At least one survey supports the existence of an exodus. Phoenix-based moving company U-Haul reported that an increasing number of people moved out of California in 2020. In its analysis, the company calculated the net gain of its one-way trucks entering a state versus leaving that state. U-Haul ranked California last on its list of state
growth, showing the steepest migration out. The reason people from the Golden State are heading to the Grand Canyon state isn’t complicated, Welch says. “They want to get out of California,” she says. “Nothing in particular about Willcox other than it being rural. We’re seeing them buying everything from top-end homes to vacant 40 acres and building homesites. It’s from every aspect.” Welch says the buying spree began in January and
“When I first started in real estate 19 years ago there were three offices and there was maybe seven agents total,” Welch says. “Now there’s probably six, seven offices and there’s, I can’t even count the number of agents out there now. So that’s how much it’s increased in the last 20 years.” So excuse Welch if she projects a little swagger over the thriving state of affairs. “If you’re in the market, come see us,” she says. “We’ll try to help you find a good one!”

Source of Coffee S
ource of Coffee keeps pouring out a tale of success and community involvement.
The coffee parlor opened on Nov. 23 at 308 S. Haskell and the flow of customers has yet to show any sign of abatement. Co-owner Dana Suorsa says the clientele seems to be increasing each week, so much so that he has two new employees in training and will welcome a barista/manager within a month. That should only lead to bigger and better service.
Source of Coffee 308 S. Haskell, Willcox, AZ 85643 520-766-6677 Facebook: Source of Coffee
For Suorsa, along with coowner and brother Michael, the historic Saxon House was a passion project before it was ever a potential business. They had spent decades in real estate, but their circumstances and skill sets have revealed a new livelihood. It took years of renovating and “16 gallons of caulk” for the Suorsas to meld the Saxon House back together. They repurposed as many materials as possible, including wood from the old porch for the new mantle, a mirror found in the back (which now sits above the mantle) and half of the bar from the Palace Saloon, another historic Willcox landmark.

“Having the barista in about a month to help manage, with that help, we’re going to increase deliveries and start curbside and bring in more pastries,” Suorsa said. “It’s a little quicker than we thought. It’d be nice not to be running uphill, but we can’t complain. The support of the community has been there from Day One, so we just have to learn with the growing pains.”

The project required Dana Suorsa’s environmental design expertise, Michael Suorsa’s graphic design talents and the decorating vision of Debra Suorsa, Dana’s wife. Together, they created a warm environment that mixes high standards with what Dana Suorsa calls “shabby chic.”
They’re not just selling drinks and pastries, but a pocket of community, conversation and even competition with a chess club that Suorsa says is working out really nice. A local girl is planning a book club for 12- to 18-year-olds, and a trivia night is in the works. Then there’s yoga. That will have to wait until Debra Suorsa and the daughters, Katie and Caroline, move to Willcox from San Tan Valley. “Yoga has been a big part of her life,” Surosa says about Debra. “Yoga has just made her life go so much better. So the yoga, once she gets down here and gets established, she’ll start that.” Then there is the planned introduction of some outdoor ambiance. I was “Hopefully in six months — hoping we’d have it a lot sooner than that — hopefully in six months we’ll have the outdoor patio done, the grass green and the planters looking good, and having the place set up so it could be used more as a venue,” Surosa says. “The way things are going, we just keep getting pulled away to handle the fires. But that’s to be expected, I guess.” Don’t forget about the new hire. Talk about community support: the incoming barista, Meg Preston, has local ties. She’s the daughter of Chad and Monica Preston, owners of Willcox’s Birds and Barrels Vineyards. Surosa says she has a wealth of experience from Phoenix coffee shops, and even helped with the Source of Coffee design and staff training.

NORTHERN COCHISE COMMUNITY HOSPITAL For people in the northeast corner of the state, the Northern Cochise Community Hospital in Willcox provides a comprehensive healthcare system that services northern Cochise County as well as neighboring communities in southeast Arizona. NCCH includes the hospital, Sulphur Springs Medical Center and Sunsites Medical Clinic. NCCH was created to provide modern hospital services and facilities, as the facilities at the Municipal Hospital were outdated and it was becoming increasingly difficult to provide needed care for patients. NCCH opened on Feb. 16, 1968, and on the first day experienced a small rain shower that exposed roof leaks, resulting in buckets being placed in strategic locations, both in the operating room and the delivery room, to catch the drips. Tom Jackson, the hospital’s first administrator, recalled that first day was
There were 31 full-time, and seven part-time employees, with 8,676 hours of volunteer service that first year. The nutritional staff provided about 100 meals per day.
memorable. He operated as the hospital administrator, X-ray technician, lab technician, public relations person and office manager. It had 25 beds and was one of only 23 in the state of Arizona, not including hospitals owned by the mines, and served as a model for Arizona community hospitals. NCCH also carries the distinction of being the first hospital in the state to recognize both doctors of medicine and doctors of osteopathic medicine. In the first year, NCCH had 707 admissions, including 83 births and four sets of twins.
What started out as a hospital of 38 employees has grown to one with about 175 today. Hospital services have expanded to meet the growing needs of the community, including rural health clinics, specialty clinics, endoscopy, inpatient rehabilitation and many outpatient services. NCCH is rich in history and culture, contributing significantly to the progress and direction of medicine in Arizona. Services Include emergency care, inpatient services, outpatient services, radiology, rehabilitation, cardio-pulmonary care, nutritional care, nursing care and outpatient nursing services. For information, visit the website at: http:// www.ncch.com/ or call 520-384-3541.
