Community encouraged to take part in Parade of Trees

Residents look over some of last year’s entries in the Parade of Trees held at the Village Square Mall. the Family Resource Center and the Sidney High School Key Club and Business Professionals of America to plan this year’s event.

The 11th annual Parade of Trees auction and fundraiser planning is underway with the Boys & Girls Club of Richland County partnering with

Jon Skinner helps auction off items at last year’s event.

To carry on the tradition, the auction will take place the day after Thanksgiving; Friday at 6 p.m. at the Village Square Mall. Once again donors are being sought to decorate and donate any Christmas item such as trees, wreaths, garlands, center pieces, table runners, table cloths and stockings or any other Christmas decoration one wishes to create. Items can continue to be set up through Wednesday. As has been the custom, awards will be given to donors for Children’s Choice, People’s Choice, Best in Show, Most Unique and Best Non-Tree Entry. Auction onlookers may vote for their favorite item during the week of Nov. 18-22. Winners will be announced on the 22 and receive an engraved plaque and

have their picture in both local newspapers. The community is encouraged to come out and support this annual fundraising event as it directly benefits our local youth and area families. A raffle will also take place with two large baskets of home-made baked goods being raffled off the evening of the auction. The annual fundraiser is conducted to support the Boys & Girls Club whose youth members continue to grow substantially each year; in addition proceeds will also be used to support the local parenting classes for the Family Resource Center, as well as the of the Key Club’s service projects and BPA’s national convention. TriFecta, Creative Solutions team up

Bill Vander Weele | Sidney Herald

TriFecta Home Center held its ribbon-cutting ceremony in September. In an effort to bring yet another asset to the TriFecta Home Center, the three sisters have the privilege to team up with Brenda Larson to add a Creative Solutions Showroom to their home center. Brenda Larson is the owner of Creative Solutions and has been providing the area with cabinetry, countertops and closet systems along with design services for the last eight years. Prior to opening TriFecta Home Center with her sisters in July, Teresa Benson had been working with Brenda at the cabinet shop for the last six years. The three sisters have had several customers asking if their establishment offered cabinetry and countertops. “Each one of us has had Creative Solutions design and provide the cabinetry and countertops for our homes,” Becky Benson said. “We knew that Brenda was the only person we would go through.” Lucky enough for the three sisters, Brenda was all in! Brenda, with her 30-plus years of experience, is in high demand in the area and is available by appointment at

Creative Solutions. The TriFecta Home Center will be a convenient location for people to stop and see the merchandise available. They will also offer appointments for any customer who is ready to tackle their next renovation, or new project. TriFecta Home Center and Creative Solutions will be working hand in hand to make sure the customer is well taken care of with the most knowledgeable team in the area. “It is such a convenience to have the Creative Solutions showroom to complement our other products such as tile, paint and décor,” TJ Rost said. “We can really provide our clients with everything they need for their project.” Stop in over the next few weeks and see for yourself the products available through Creative Solutions and TriFecta Home Center. Appointments area available with Brenda by calling 488-1461, stop in at TriFecta at 1051 S. Central Ave. or call and make an appointment with Teresa at 433-9898.

Make simple, homemade, crowd-pleasers (StatePoint) Whether you’re playing host or bringing a side dish to someone else’s holiday gathering, preparing a delicious crowd-pleaser that’s simple and affordable to make is a priority for many. “The days of spending hours in the kitchen making homemade dishes from scratch are long gone,” Jonathan Spear at Green Giant said. “These days, time-crunched family cooks can take solace in knowing that any dish that starts and ends in the kitchen can be considered homemade, including meals using conveniences such as frozen vegetables and sauces from a jar.” This holiday season, if you want to stand out by serving that memorable dish that didn’t take hours to prepare, consider the following tried-andtrue culinary tips: • Shed the time-consuming task of washing and chopping vegetables

by going frozen. Frozen veggies are picked at their peak, making them just as nutritious as their fresh counterparts. • Use free online resources to find quick, easy holiday appetizers, entrees and desserts. • Don’t rely on unhealthy ingredients to add wow-factor to holiday dishes.  Instead, add simple ingredients such as fresh herbs and spices to any recipe for layers of flavor and zest. Everyone will be asking for the recipe. For an interesting new twist on a classic holiday meal, try Green Giant’s recipe for Turkey and Veggie Alfredo Pot Pie: Prep Time: 20 Minutes Start to Finish: 40 Minutes Makes 5 servings Ingredients • 1 tablespoon butter • 1/2 cup chopped onion • 1/2 cup chopped red bell pepper • 1 jar (15 oz) Alfredo sauce • 2 cups cubed cooked turkey • 1 bag (12 oz) Green Giant Valley Fresh Steamers frozen broccoli, carrots, cauliflower & cheese sauce

• 3 tablespoons chopped fresh basil leaves • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • 1 can (12 oz) Pillsbury Golden Layers refrigerated buttermilk biscuits • 2 tablespoons shredded fresh Parmesan cheese Directions • Heat oven to 375 degrees F. Spray a 2-quart glass baking dish with cooking spray. Cook frozen vegetables as directed on bag for minimum time. • Meanwhile, in 10-inch nonstick skillet, melt 1 tablespoon butter over medium heat. Cook onion and bell pepper, stirring occasionally, about 5 minutes or until tender. Stir in Alfredo sauce, turkey, cooked vegetables with sauce, basil and black pepper. Cook until mixture is thoroughly heated and bubbly, stirring constantly. Spoon into baking dish. • Separate dough into 10 biscuits. Cut each biscuit in half crosswise. Arrange around edge of baking dish, overlapping slightly. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. • Bake 18 to 20 minutes or until biscuits are golden brown.

Campaign for Gifts from the Heart underway By Bill Vander Weele Sidney Herald

With the goal that everybody has a great Christmas, the Gifts from the Heart campaign is being held again this year in Richland County. Through the program, gifts, food and clothes are donated to help those in need during the holiday season. This year’s shopping for children’s gifts will take place from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 14 at the Masonic Temple, which is located on Main Street across from the courthouse. Jakkie Waller, chair of Gifts from Heart, said the goal is to provide a toy, clothes, hats and mittens, books and a family game for each child. The only rules to be eligible to receive the materials are that the child or children (0-18 years of age) live with the shopper and that they live in Richland County. The three local Edward Jones offices are drop-off points for toy donations. Waller added ABATE is a strong supporter for making toy donations so people could contact the group if they wish to help in that fashion. She said books for all ages are in great need this year. The Christmas Coalition, meanwhile, provides meals for families and elderly who are short of money. Last
