NATIVE PLANTS ARE BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT, EASIER ON THE HOMEOWNER

or centuries, a major part of gardening has involved importing exotic and interesting plants from other parts of the world. Flowers, shrubs and ornamental grasses that are native in faraway lands are grown, potted and shipped to just about anywhere — many miles from where nature intended them to grow. vive those conditions. The same goes for cold, wet climates. Choosing plants that grow naturally in your area makes more sense. Picking plants that require more or less rainfall than what you receive is

a sure recipe to create stress for your landscaping, which results in more disease, wilting and rotting. Ideally, native plants will never need to be watered because nature takes care of them. When they do need

extra water because of drought or other temporary weather conditions, it won't require nearly as much as plants that are imported from other areas.

Native plants grow wild without any special care in your area. If you're the type of person who doesn't have much time to spend tending their landscaping, or if you simply don't enjoy gardening, then native plants are a perfect solution. If you pick the right ones and plant them properly to begin with, they can provide years of trouble-free care.

Another advantage of native plants is that they will always match your area's natural beauty. Native plants can be found all around where you live. The trees, shrubs and flowers that grow wild in and around your city create an easy way for your home to complement its surroundings. They also give your home a sense of place. Your lawn and landscape will perfectly match where you live, which is a pleasing feeling.

This has been good for increasing the variety of plants available for your landscape, but it's also created a big problem: many of those imported plants simply aren't suited for where you live. Even plants that are hardy in your area's temperatures may not be ideal in your city because of soil conditions, rainfall, wind or other factors. That means they require more watering, more fertilizer, more care and more time to keep them thriving in an area where they don't belong naturally. There's a solution, though. Many landscapers are turning to native plants rather than imported varieties, and here's why.

Hiring a lawncare professional

M

CHOOSING THE RIGHT ONE FOR YOU

* Compare prices. Professional landscapers offer an array of services and, as a result, those services vary in cost. Ask neighbors and friends what they pay for routine maintenance and any other special services. Get recommendations for companies that do work you admire. * Interview prospective companies. Set up appointments or price quotes from three different lawncare services. Compare the offerings and the prices. Ask questions about whether pricing is "per week" or "per cut." Determine if

services such as edging, blowing away debris, trimming, and clean-up are included. * Find out about extras. Some services will offer packages for spring and fall clean-up, and homeowners should inquire about any special offers during the initial comparison stage. * Who does the work? A company may farm out work to other landscapers. Figure out who will be arriving each week and base decisions accordingly.

he most popular floor covering in American homes since the 1960s, by far, is carpeting. Carpeted floors feel great under bare feet and provide a cozy, elegant look that can be designed to match any room. Carpet does have its disadvantages, though. It can stain — think of toddlers spilling red Kool-Aid on beige carpet — shows dirt easily and can be hard to keep clean. It can also start to show wear prematurely in heavily trafficked walkways, and some people say it

can attract dust and pet hair that make allergies flare up. Those are some of the reasons many homeowners are choosing to switch out their carpeting for hard surfaces.

ranty before you buy it. You'll want to pick the best quality flooring you can afford.

LAMINATE FLOORS

One option that has long been popular is hardwood flooring. Made from real trees cut down into planks, hardwood flooring is available in all the variety that nature provides. Hardwood floors are typically more expensive than laminate floors, but they also look better, with a natural texture and graining that can be stained in thousands of different options. Many hardwoods are available pre-finished with durable coatings, so they can have the same longevity and wear resistance of laminate floors, along with the ease of installation.

An affordable, very durable option is laminate flooring. It's quickly grown as one of the most popular floor surfaces in today's homes because it's easy to install and comes close to matching the beauty of real wood. Laminate floors are not the same as wood floors, though. They are typically thinner and manufactured to look like wood or other natural materials, but they're actually just a printed pattern that looks natural. It doesn't have the same variability and stainability of true wood flooring. Look closely at the floor's war-

HARDWOOD FLOORS

TILE FLOORS Tile flooring has perhaps the widest range of choices on the market today. It's available from very cheap ceramic tiles to very expensive natural stones. The big advantage of tile flooring is that it can have natural beauty, much like hardwood floors, but is also water resistant. It's often used in kitchens and bathrooms for that reason, although more and more homeowners are getting comfortable putting tile and stone floors in their living areas, too. Tile is also great for designers because it's available in a wide variety of colors and textures. Whether manmade like ceramics or cut straight from a quarry, like marble or sandstone, tile can provide the durability and natural style that matches today's lifestyle.

The New Modern Kitchen IDEAS FOR GIVING YOUR KITCHEN A WARM LOOK K Modern styling continues to be a popular trend, although it's developing a twist lately. Instead of the cold, industrial, metal style that many people associate with the modern look, the new modern is warmer and more inviting. It uses elegant woods and natural materials in a clean, ornament-free design to combine the best in modern design and old-world craftsmanship.

Many people think of modern design as having a cold, industrial look, but that’s not always the case.

STREAMLINED DESIGN The streamlined look continues to be in for kitchens. Influenced heavily by the midcentury style, including straight lines and simple, Scandinavianinspired wood fixtures, today's streamlined kitchens use glass and clean lines for a thoroughly modern appearance. It's especially notable in the continued on page 7

The biggest trend in the new modern style is mixing different materials together — typically metal with natural materials, like stone and wood. Stainless steel appliances and fixtures remain the top sellers, but they're being paired with more old-world materials and colors. Natural stone tiles and backsplashes are especially popular, along with cork floors and rich wood cabinets. One new trend in cabinets is using more than one stain or color to create contrast. The old rule of always using matching cabinets has been

Finally, high-quality accessories — especially wooden accessories — are coming back into style. People want a sense of quality in their home at a time when cheap plastic kitchen tools are wearing out and being replaced far too often. Thick wooden bowls, handcarved dishes and other longlasting accessories are popular this year. As the economy recovers, people are wanting to invest in materials that withstand the test of time, and well-built wooden structures are doing the trick. They fit the new modern design while adding the warmth that makes your house feel like home.

Landscaping You Can Eat A NEW TREND: BRINGING YOUR GARDEN TO THE FRONT DOOR ardening and landscaping have historically been two very different disciplines. Gardening involves growing things for the dinner table, and landscaping is strictly ornamental.

You can combine the two, though, in a new home improvement trend called edible landscaping. With an edible landscape, your goal is to create a space that is just as welcoming and visually pleasing as a traditional landscape, only with the added benefit of vegetables, fruits and herbs that you can use to cook a meal.

LIMITED SPACE A big reason edible landscaping has become popular is that it takes up much less space than a traditional garden. If you have a little space between the shrubs by your front door, you could plant some herbs during the growing season. It Edible landscaping combines gardening with landscape design, creating a tasty and beautiful style.

doesn't take up much room, and there's no rule that says gardeners have to separate their landscaping from their edibles. Just be careful what you harvest, because many landscaping plants are not edible.

CONVENIENCE While a traditional vegetable garden is usually planted away from the house, edible landscaping can be planted right outside your door. That makes it easy to step outside and pick some rosemary or pull a piece of fruit from a tree, making it easier to put your garden to use. It's also popular to use containers as part of an edible landscape. There are many varieties of dwarf citrus trees, for example, that are perfect for container gardening. You can bring them indoors in the winter and let them be visible as part of

your landscaping in the spring and summer.

BEAUTY

9

Finally, edible landscaping can be just as beautiful as traditional, non-edible landscaping. You have plenty of choices for edible plants that are also suitable for the landscape — including varieties of persimmons, pecans, citrus trees and peach trees — that are as tasty as they are good looking. When you choose edible plants for your landscaping, you're freeing up more space in your vegetable garden for other plants. You're also putting your gardening skills on full display, letting visitors get an up-close look at the bounty you're growing rather than hiding it in a faraway backyard garden.

If you're considering inspiration from Colonial gardens of yore for your landscape, certain pointers can turn that dream garden into a reality. First, Colonial gardens are largely geometric and symmetrical. Elements should be arranged with thought to the central axis of the planting bed. Color is used sparsely in Colonial-style gardens; therefore, stick to small patches of color used in moderation against monochromatic hues of green foliage. Linear pathways are also a dominating feature of Colonial gardens. At the end of the path put a focal point, such as a large planter or birdbath. Brick, crushed gravel and seashells are pathway materials of choice when constructing the garden. Using more hardscape than plants and flowers enables homeowners who create Colonial-style gardens to perform minimal maintenance.

Make Gutter Cleaning Safer and Easier

obody enjoys gutter cleaning. Yet it's much more important than many homeowners think. Rain flowing over windows, doors, and siding can rot fascia as well as door and window framing. It can erode the soil around your home and damage its foundation, and also cause a wet basement, mold, and mildew. To help keep gutters operating properly and to protect your investment, try these tips: 1. Think Safety First. Always use a solid, quality ladder to reach your gutters. Safety glasses and gloves are a good idea, too. And watch out for power lines. 2. Use the Right Tools for the Job. In addition to needing something to contain gutter debris, you'll also need a tool to scoop it out. The Gutter Getter Scoop from Working Products, Inc. is a good option. It's the only flexible scoop

shaped to fit all gutters, plus it will keep your hands away from the debris. 3. Don't Over-reach. Overreaching can destabilize your ladder and cause you to fall. Instead, consider using a special tool to extend your reach. The Gutter Grabber is a cleaning tool on an extension pole that lets you clean up to 18 feet of gutter without moving your ladder. continued on page 11

4. Check the Downspouts, Too. If the spout is clogged, a coat

hanger or the handle of your Gutter Grabber can help get the debris out of the spout.

Then, use a garden hose to flush out any remaining debris. For stubborn clogs, it may be necessary to remove the downspout and back flush it with the hose. Covering your downspout with a strainer such as the Gutter Getter Big Top Downspout Strainer will help reduce future clogging, too. 5. Clean Gutters Anytime They Need It. Most homeowners

know they need to clean their gutters in the fall. But once you understand the importance of gutters, you'll know why its vital to clean them out 11 anytime they get full. To protect the value of your home, keep your gutters clean throughout the year. Gutter Getter products are available at ACE Hardware. Aerate: A lawn needs air, so do rake away the leaves, twigs and debris. Or, take it a step further at the roots with 'core aeration' for stronger, longer growth to underground rainwater.

Fertilize: Follow gardening advice and feed the lawn with nutrients four times yearly: two in spring, and two in fall. Patch Repair: Fix bare spots by 'overseeding', a process of planting grass seed directly into the soil of an existing lawn. First, rake, aerate, and cut the grass short; on patchy spots spread a moist layer of lawn soil; disseminate grass seed over the soil; water and keep moist for several weeks while the new grass grows. Weed control: Use an approved herbicide spray that is formulated to target the weeds without killing the grass. Information at: www.todaysclearchoice.com.

That's changing, though. As more people want to take advantage of the utility of a garage — not to mention making it more attractive — garage makeovers are becoming a popular option for people who want to beautify their home. Here's a look at three ways

Remodeling Remains Hot FAMILIES STAYING IN HOUSES, MAKING THEM BETTER fter the housing crisis of 2008, many Americans have decided to stay put in their existing homes rather than moving.

SUNDAY, APRIL 22, 2012 ARGUS/ WEDNESDAY, APRIL 25, 2012 INDEPENDENT ENTERPRISE

A

It's a decision that makes both financial and emotional sense. Instead of going to all the expense of moving to a new house every couple of years, more families are deciding to stay where they are and upgrade their existing space rather than moving somewhere new. That's why remodeling continues to be a popular option for many families. They can turn their existing house into a more useful place, adding value, style and functionality all at the same time. Here are three trends that remain popular in remodeling.

FAMILIES ADDING SUITES Today's families are living differently than they did a decade ago. There are more families today choosing to live with more than one generation under one roof, whether it's the adult children who have returned home after college or elderly parents moving in with their kids. That's why adding a suite — often called the "mother-in-law suite" — remains one of the most common additions to a house. These separate suites allow both privacy and livability within the home, letting families share one roof but remaining separated enough to stay sane. It's common to add a separate area with its own bedroom, bathroom and often a small, compact kitchen space to create an apartment-like zone that's separated from the rest of the home. This lets families combine their lives while still maintaining some level of independence and privacy.

OUTDOOR HAVENS Turning your yard into an extension of the home is one of the most popular ways to upgrade your home. When done properly, it feels like you've just added square footage to your home without having to knock out any walls. With upgraded patio areas, outdoor fire pits and barbecue grills, covered awnings and high-class seating, today's outdoor living spaces are as luxurious as they are relaxing. They can also make great entertainment areas. A big patio space with landscaping that sets it apart as a separate outdoor room is ideal for big family or social gatherings.

CUSTOM KITCHENS The kitchen is one room in the house where families tend to spend the most time together, and many people are choosing to upgrade their kitchen to make it more functional, spacious and stylish. A fully customized kitchen is a great way to make your home match your lifestyle. Granite and stone-look countertops are some of the hottest kitchen upgrades, as they have been for years, and integrating appliances with the cabinetry is gaining in popularity. This idea has been popular in Europe for years, but it's starting to catch on more in America as homeowners use custom panels to conceal and beautify their refrigerator and dishwasher, along with adding new features such as wine racks and hidden storage solutions.

THIS SEASON I WANT SOMETHING

Did you know? Compost can improve soil structure and texture and improve the soil's capacity to hold water. Eco-conscious green-thumbers love compost because it's all-natural, while cost-conscious homeowners like compost because they can improve their lawn and garden without spending a dime. Adding compost improves soil fertility and can stimulate healthy root development, enabling lawns and gardens to better withstand potentially harsh weather, such as summer heat waves or windy fall and winter afternoons. Compost is effective because it provides food for microorganisms that contribute to overall soil health. When these microorganisms are fed, they produce phosphorous, potassium and nitrogen. As a result, homeowners save money because they do not need to purchase potentially costly soil amendments to maintain healthy soil. When making compost, homeowners can use a host of ingredients they likely already have lying around the house. Dead houseplants, for instance, can be effective compost ingredients as long as the plants were not thorny or riddled with disease. Homeowners with pet rabbits, or gerbils, or hamsters can even add these animals' manure to their compost. When doing so, include the wood or paper bedding from the animal's crate. Another potentially valuable compost ingredient is vegetable scraps, such as carrot peelings, or even eggshells. When adding these items, be sure to bury them in the compost pile so they don't attract animals.

Believe you need an acre of property to start gardening? Think again. Individuals can grow their own patch of greenery in just about any space they have on hand. When it comes time to getting your hands dirty, it doesn't matter if there are rolling hills or a single container filled with soil on which to plant. Although many gardening professionals present plans for larger-scale gardens, it's possible to create smaller-scale options that require a great deal less maintenance and upkeep. To get started, homeowners or

apartment dwellers need to first look at the space they have. Perhaps this is a few flower pots or a small square of exposed dirt in an otherwise concrete jungle. Others may have an expansive backyard in which to toil in the soil. Either way, knowing what you have to work with can help home gardeners map out a more successful plan of action. Next, it's important to consider the climate and the soil conditions. Soil can be amended to a point, but plants that require a lot of water may not do well continued on page 21

in an area plagued by drought. Color is another thing to consider. Gardeners with smaller spaces may want to think about keeping gardens mainly monochromatic, which will look more cohesive. Cool-colored flowers and plants will help make a garden look larger. Warm-colored flowers will add impact and could create a cozier feel. Hanging baskets and raised containers can add height and free up more floor space for gardens. They're particularly helpful when space is at a premium. Keep in mind that baskets and containers tend to dry out easily, so using peat moss, vermiculite and other products that tend to hold onto water will help keep the soil moist. These containers

also may need to be watered more frequently. Containers also can be used to plant small trees or shrubs. Use them for vegetable plants as well. The advantage to containers is they can be moved elsewhere if a plant is not thriving in a particular area. People who have an extremely space with which to work may be limited to a few flower pots in the window, but they can easily grow herbs or annual flowers. Those who have a large space may want to consider breaking the landscape down into smaller quadrants; otherwise, the garden can seem unruly. Use hardscape materials, such as mulch, rocks, boulders, and slate to break up the greenery (and also cut down on items that need pruning and watering).

STEAM SHOWERS Imagine coming home from work after a stressful day. You step into the shower and are instantly immersed in a cloud of hot, peppermint-scented steam that melts your troubles away. A steam shower uses a device called a steam generator to boil water and gently emit it in a cloud of steam, all at safe temperatures. They typically include a way for you to add natural oils — such as eucalyptus or mint — to make it an aromatherapy experience, too. A steam shower requires professional installation, including custom electrical and plumbing work, but the end result can be worth the expense. It's also more cost effective than building a traditional sauna in your home, so you're adding a relaxing, luxurious experience right in your existing shower.

SOAKER TUBS Traditional bathtubs are around 14 inches deep, which is perfect for bathing children or for adults laying flat in the tub, but they're not ideal for sitting up with a book and unwinding. That's where soaker tubs come in.

Unlike the shallow traditional tubs, which are usually rectangular, soaker tubs are shorter, taller, oval-shaped tubs designed to better immerse the body while leaning back. They let you cover your entire body more like a swimming pool than a normal shallow bathtub. Soaker tubs are usually installed on their own, without a shower head, often in the center of a bathroom wall. And because of their oval shape and shorter overall dimensions designed for sitting, rather than laying, they usually use less water to fill up. It's a great way to make your bathing experience more relaxing.

COLORED LED LIGHTING Everyone knows that lighting can have a big impact on the mood of a room. From cool blues to warm oranges and reds, the "temperature" of the lighting in a room can add drama and create a theatrical feeling. New systems are being sold that will automatically change the color of lighting in your shower or bathroom to create light therapy, using different shades and brightnesses to help you unwind. Some can be installed in faucets, others in showerheads or in the overhead bathroom lights, but the overall goal is the same: making your bathroom a place to get away from it all. XNLV27367

From the decor to the functionality of the space, here are three popular ideas for making your bathroom a more relaxing place to spend time.

CT Derm: Preparing Your Skin For Summer one’s barrier is disrupted. In order for the skin barrier to function at its full capacity it is important not only for it to have enough fats and oils called lipids, but specific types of lipids in the proper ratios. These specific lipids are cholesterol, ceramide, and linoleic acid. Epionce is the only skin care line on the market to contain all three of these key barrier lipids in the proper ratios. Clinical studies found Epionce Barrier Creams to be superior to even the most potent prescription moisturizer. Evidence also found that after using Epionce twice daily for a few days, there was continual benefit for an additional 1-2 more days.

Fortunately, our skin has unique ways of protecting itself from the harsh environment. For example, it has the ability to become thicker and increase it’s secretion of protective oil called sebum. Just as importantly, thee are skin care routines we need to follow to keep our skin functioning to the best of its ability. In this article we will explore a few fundamental concepts about the skin’s protective mechanisms and how its barrier functions. These concepts and strategies are based on rigorous scientific research completed by Treasure Valley’s very own Dermatologist, Dr. Carl R. Thornfeldt, along with his clinical research team. This article has pertinent information everyone should be aware of and primarily focuses on prevention. The subsequent article will focus on treatment of summer skin diseases.

Other products such as Cetaphil, Aveeno, and CeraVe, contain just one or two of the three key barrier lipids and have ben tested to have about 1/4 the benefit of Epionce. Neutrogena Norwegian Formula and Eucerin have a similar level of barrier function benefit as the marketed brands mentioned previously, but use glycerin, mineral oil, and lanolin extracts. Pure Vaseline, pure glycerin and Aquaphor have been documented to be half as effective as Epionce and twice as effective as other brands. However, many people do not like the greasy gooey feeling. For resistant to treatment, extremely scaly and fissured skin, glycerin, Amlactin XL, LacHydrin 12, Carmol 20, or Ureacin 20 followed by pure Vaseline or Aquaphor will improve the appearance of th eskin. If your skin is moderately scaly, it is best to apply Carmol 20 or Ureacin 20 followed by glycerin. Recent research at Oregon Health Sciences Center indicated that barrier product are most effective when used six times daily, but there was also significant improvement to the skin barrier with three uses a day.

About 70% of American adults have an abnormal skin barrier. During the summer, as well as in the dead of winter, virtually every-

It is important to know that the skin barrier is about 20% water. For this reason, it is best to apply skin care products after dampening the

Oral supplements with green and white tea or golden fern (also called heliocare) and are as effective as many prescription products in decreasing sensitivity to the damaging ultraviolet rays. Beta carotene taken at doses that induce “orange colored palms is also somewhat protective. If you are planning to spend more than 20 minutes outdoors, always use sunscreen containing a 50 SPF or higher, and apply two layers 30 minutes apart. This is important because SPF is only a multiple of how long it takes for your skin to get red after being out in the sun. For example, if your skin reddens within 5 minutes of sun exposure, an SPF 50 means it will take 250 minutes (4+ hours) to get red. Although sunscreens are very effective in decreasing overall UV damage, no sunscreen gives 100% protection, and the light that penetrates the skin activates some degree of inflammation. Taking this into consideration, anti-inflammatory sunscreens are recommended. These would include Epionce Ultra Shield 50, Neutrogena 100 Full Spectrum, Aveeno 70, Aveeno 60 for babies, and Live Strong 50+. If you know you will be outdoors for a long day of sun exposure, expecially if you are going to be swimming or sweating, take 1-2 full strength aspirin prior to and immediately after exposure to

prevent sun burn.

23

People who are deficient in thiamine (or Vitamin B-1) are more susceptible to insect bites especially mosquitoes because their sweat does not secrete the vitamin which helps ward off the insects. With mosquito season well on its way, it would be helpful to start taking thiamine 100mg daily. Odorless garlic has also been proven to reduce the incidence of insect bites. Clothing is another vitally important way to protect your skin. There are several clothing lines carried online and in outdoor sporting stores that claim to protect against both UV rays and insect bites. Hats are also carried in these clothing lines and are very important in decreasing sun exposure to your face. Hats should have at least a 3 1/2 inch rim all the way around and have a tight enough weave that you cannot see through it. Baseball caps might as well be called “cancer caps because they give no protection to your ears, cheeks, and neck. Incorporating these fundamental principles of skin care NOW, will improve your quality of life over the next 6 months, and many more summers to come so you can enjoy the sunshine AND protect your skin!

Blue skies, warm breezes, and signing birds let us know that springtime is finally here. The rise in temperature compels us to participate in recreational activities and hobbies that have been neglected during the winter months. Whether it be gardening, hiking, swimming, or taking a leisurely walk, it is important to remember to take care of our skin before rushing into the relentless offenses of the summer environment. Our skin takes on a variety of insults during the summer months including sunlight, heat, wind, insect bites, contact with toxic plants, and friction from clothing, backpacks, and life preservers. A unique type of insult can even occur unintentionally while relaxing in the summer sun, drinking a gin and tonic when a stray splash of lime juice comes in contact with the skin. The can cause a reaction resulting in blisters or a brownish colored rash to appear called phytophoto dermatitis.
